Wow! Subject matter, scripting, on-camera presence, video quality, and post-production are all AMAZING to say the least! Brava! I’m a Seiko diver watch collector (vintage and new) and the only reason I haven’t pulled the trigger on the SBDC101 because I’m still hoping to (one day) buy the SLA017 instead; not that it’s “better” but I prefer its dimensions.

Elizabeth... I just discovered ur channel and I absolutely gonna keep watching your vids more. I just want to point out though that the spb143 only cost 950 and some at 915 with free shipping in Japan. I am so glad that this video cam up on my feed.
It was refreshing to see a woman do a watch review - I haven't seen that on here at all - maybe because of the algorithm idk
What really impressed me with your review is that you clearly care about the things that most of us are looking for in a watch and you got straight to it with no fluff and presented it clearly and honestly
It definitely seems like a good value for the money, especially considering the movement, the protective coating, the hacking feature, and the solid clasp.
I think anyone would be hard pressed to get more watch for the money than this
You definitely earned a sub from me

Thank you so much for pronouncing "tegemented" correctly! Btw...also agree, Seiko needs to get their act together on quality. I've downsized my Seikos and focused on 8L series movements, which perform at a higher standard even though they aren't regulated unless they appear in a Grand Seiko.

Initially I considered buying one of these but waited so long that Seiko released the SPB317.
The 143 is more refined than the 317, but I like the lack of polished surfaces on the 317. The dia-shield, the brushing, the case shape, and the 4 o’ clock crown make the 317 a bit less refined, but a bit more tough-looking than the 143.
I agree with your point about these watches being restrained, having so many lovely, subtle details. Too many Seiko divers have “in your face” designs especially given their size.

This is definitely their best diver line under $2K. I have tried on their old MM200, their new one, the MM300 (a bit bulky/top heavy for me, but nice!), the "Willard X," and own a King Turtle. The SPB143 really surprised me with how much I liked it. I completely got the excitement for this watch once it was on the wrist. It wears great even on my bigger 7-1/4" (18.4cm) wrist, and the slight tint of the Diashield coating gives it a nice look. I really would like to add one to my collection, but I need to figure out how it fits in, and if I ditch my King Turtle to put it there (for collection reasons, not $$). The gray is SO versatile, but the SPB297 is probably my favorite since the limited SPB149 and I love blue. I am lacking a blue diver of any sort in my collection, but a blue Doxa or even stepping up to a blue Pelagos is not out of the question. Decisions, decisions...

Seiko movements tend to be low amplitude / low stress (balance amplitude, not beats per hour) compared to Swiss movements which is one reason why Seikos are generally less accurate.
I love Seiko, but an Omega coaxial is 5x better engineered.

I have a spb143. It’s definitely one of those “this is just right” watches. Could easily be my only casual watch. I wear it on a NATO, but did kind of like the look on the bracelet too.
FYI, if you haven’t checked one out, look at the Rado Capt Cook Mk2. It’s a small dressy diver with a great beads of rice bracelet. Very unisex given the size, and a unique little thing with excellent finishing and build quality (honestly, it’s on par with my Omegas).

Seiko is a fascinating company and a great source if one were looking for a "one watch" solution. But I'd choose one of their SNE-series solar quartz pieces for that task. I know, the horrors of a one-watch quartz collection :)

  • @scanspeak00
    @scanspeak00 ปีที่แล้ว

I must say it really looks great on you.
I just ordered this one, prices have dropped a little and I just couldn't resist :)
A little inaccuracy doesn't bother me at all as long as it's reliable which it is.
The colour is what sealed it for me as it will go with anything I'm wearing. It's toughness also gives me peace of mind. Apparently the Tudors scratch super easily. Perhaps you could do a comparison with your BB58?
Seems we have similar taste, I also own the Casio Oceanus S200.

Everytime I find a girls watch channel I feel skeptical because the ones I found don't have much knowledge of movements and just focus on brand prestige but I loved your content and I'm glad to see a girl that knows what she is talking about on the watch community.
This was a bit of a hit from seiko. At 1200$ I would want to see a glossy ceramic bezel and a tighter accuracy.

I agree. It's a very good Seiko Diver. But to me, you don't recognize it as a Seiko diver at the first glance (or did I miss something?). It's really an atypical design for a diver in this brand.
About the accuracy. At least, the watch is accurate when you get it... It was my case (I got it on August 2020, among the first to get it in France). I was very surprised by the accuracy. I own several Seiko divers, from the SKX to the LX, and even the MarineMaster (SBDX017) was a little bit "weird" at the unboxing (by the way, it is very accurate when you bring it on the wrist! +/- 2 sec//day. But not on the table, during the night... It's... a galloping horse! +15 in 7/8 hours!).
About the bracelet... Yes, it fits well on the wrist. It is nice looking. But. BUT! It's the HELL to set it. Did you set it yourself? I'm a very cool man. But I lost control of myself when I try to fix the links. Why not a screw rather this... 3 parts mess?!
I was a little bit disappointed by the saphir glass. Not as shiny and transparent as I expected it first. The hardlex glass, slightly doomed on the "old" SBDC 031 ("Sumo" with the former 6r15 caliber) around 650us$/€ was better looking (but it's... A big boy!). Transparent and shiny. The top is the former hardlex glass of the MM300 sbdx001/017. Beautiful.Of course, the LX is "standout". This watch doesn't race in the same category!
Finally, two years after, this watch became my ordinary day watch among all my watches, from different brands. Discreet but present nevertheless. Not a black hole on my wrist, attracting attention and... Strokes! To my mind, it fits very well on a woman's wrist as on a man's one up to 19/19,5cm (7,4/7,6 inches, my wrist). The case middle is very well designed as a "skin diver". It's not a blockhaus from the Atlantic Wall like ... A Tudor Black Bay for exemple! This is why I love this watch. For its design.
    This watch... Deserves its price!
My only regret, not a "all mat black" dial in option. I don't like colors, and grey... It's a color! 😁
(Pardon my English. I'm French, you know... 😇😅😋)

as an sbdc051 owner, it doesn't make sense how the price went from $700 to $1200 with very little difference between these models

    • @elizabeth_grant
      @elizabeth_grant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a fair point. My only problem with the 051 is the size. I don't think an updated/improved movement is worth a 500 dollar premium but Seiko had been raising their prices disproportionately the last few years.

Paid $450 for my 053 about 4 years ago, can't complain at that price point. It was +25sec/d out of the box, paid $45 to regulate it down to +10, +12 sec/day. IMHO, the 051, 053 series are the best seiko divers ever made for $1k for the 6r movement. Nice review, thanks. 👍

For me, the SBDC147 covers it all. This *143 is a damn good looking watch. I own a lot of Swiss movements as well and agree that Seiko’s quality department is a little lazy. Almost ALL of my Seiko’s got modified in some fashion (mostly upgraded dials and bezel materials). But, the *147 stays stock.

I don't know why but I'm seriously reluctant to spend serious money on a diver. I have Blue Casio Duro ($40 from Walmart) on a pretty cheap bracelet ($10 on Ali Express), and it doesn't look great, but it looks very-very good. When I see a watch that costs 20x or more, that I honestly only like marginally more than what I see on my wrist, it is a no-brainer for me. The only diver that has tempted me recently is the Oris 65, particularly the black dial with a bronze bezel. Also who else was wondering if that is Liz @4:46?

My love affair with Seiko ended a few years ago. With constant QC issues, price creep and an ambivalent attitude towards its fanbase drove me to other offerings, Orient being one. My toxic relationship with Seiko also forced me into the arms of some very fine micro brands that offer far more bang for the buck, but does not have the heritage of the Seiko brand. I still have Seiko in my contacts, just not on speed dial and I will never buy one sight unseen due to constant misalignment issues. Great video and I'm almost ashamed to say it, but also a very nice looking watch.

Are Ball watches on your radar at all? I love the history of the brand, and find them to be super overlooked, which suits me just fine(less hype/lower cost). The fireman, and trainmaster are fantastic watches, and at a sub $1,000 the finishing looks great, and don't even get me started on that RR second hand, anyway keep up the good work.

I have the SBDC053 and the size of it works OK for me, it's a beautiful watch and a bargain compared to my SPB147 or 239. And it would probably list for more if it was being released now, but the 143, 147, etc. despite they're higher price just have the magic; the proportions are spot on and work on all, but the largest wrists. SBDC053 would look better on a 22mm wide strap IMHO.

I get a greater shock with a $12,000 Rolex Submariner than a $1000 Seiko SPB143. The Chinese can make both watches for $200 or less and still deliver darn accurate timekeeping.

Excellent review. I think this is Seiko's best value watch... Definitely more refined then the Sumo, and much more wearable for most people. I don't like the accuracy of the movement. Settling in at minus 12 seconds would really start to bother me given the price. I have absolutely no issues with ETA and Selita 200 movements in my collection.

I own an SPB147 and while it's a nice desk diver it has two problems, the first being that when compared to the original 1965 62MAS it reveals too many differences that accumulate to tip it right into uncanny valley, therefore a search for a modern 62MAS might be better done elsewhere. The second problem is that while it could have been an extraordinary deal at 600-700$ or a good deal at 800-900$ it's priced at 1.0-1.2K$ which is not a great value at all when comparing it head to head with other watches in this price range.

I’m saving up for a Pepsi Turtle and King Samurai. Seiko has had quality control issues in the past few years. Modern Seikos are not as solid as they were in the 90s and early 2000s.

I was really eyeing this watch as I've never owned a submariner and was previously eyeing the BB58 though I can't find the reference I like at retail. Would you recommend getting this and playing around with different straps or just save for BB58? The Tudor is definitely not a must have grail watch, I just really like the case shape and this Seiko looks pretty close.

Because of the difficulties I have had with Seiko movements in general, and this movement while less so, as well, I cannot recommend this over saving up for the back bay 58 if you're able. I would only recommend this to someone who finds the BB58 financially unattainable.
This is a good watch and it looks great, but the BB58 is a great watch that looks even better to me.

I have the 147 and 149 and also have the BB58 in blue and bronze. The BB58 is at least one level up. Turn the bezel on both and you know :-) However, the Seikos are incredible fun and changing the straps is easy and very rewarding. It really depends on your patience. The Seiko can bridge you over to the BB58 or, for some, replace that desire entirely. Just for reference the BB58 movements are now guaranteed to be within +4/-2 spd - adjusted after casing of the watch according to their press material.

Impeccable looking (and sized) watch until, for the sake of ISO compliance, they crammed a lume pip to the right of the date window and, unlike all the other pips, right smack in the middle of the minutes track...ugh. (They should have instead lumed the white background of the date wheel...that would have satisfied ISO while still maintaining a semblance of symmetry.) I wish I'd've bought one before they added the lopsided lume pip...the original design was so handsome that I could have accepted the fact that Seikos don't actually keep time very well.

+ 2 to - 12 suggests to me a knock or drop. It doesn't take much. My Willard (6R35) was running + 5 on average till it fell off the coffee table onto a carpeted floor and then immediately started running at - 10.

Lmaooo damn man I wish I never read this comment. I just got my Willard a couple days ago and its running within seconds of my cell phone.

You have to be a big fan of Seiko to overlook their accuracy issue. Their movements are robust and don't die, but don't expect much in term of accuracy. Even their higher end watches have accuracy problem. This is something Seiko has known for quite some time but just refuse to do anything about it. Just know that with Seiko's 4R and 6R movements, expect them to lose time significantly after the movement has broken in settles. I guess Seiko wants us to buy their Spring Drive if we are asking for accurate movements 😂

this is true. My turtle seikos (2), have far better accuracy than this model 143. I dont wear my 143 becuase itll easily gain a minute 2-4 days into wearing it. sometimes less than that. Such a shame.

I tossed up between this and the SPB213, and ended up falling for the "limited edition". The 143 looks so good in your video though! I wonder if this early version without the 3 o'clock lume pip will become more valuable than the later version.
