  • Hi, Welcome to Dee Light
Is #mathematics a boring subject? No, certainly not, if it was so then, maths would have not been subject ruling the universe.
It is evidently known that every physical and universal law, cease to exist in a mathematical formulation. Hence mathematics becomes the language of universe.
If science is the kingdom, ruling the modern men then mathematics is queen of that kingdom and mathematicians are the princes there in.
Thus, who are the man empowering mathematics? In short Men behind mathematics.
It has a glorious #history of more than twenty five hundred years with exciting tales of truth and hyper truth, murder and mystery, war and worship, eureka and tragedy, puzzles and paradoxes, disputes and divinity, problems and pride above all its a story of beauty and belief that engaged the minds of thousands for centuries.
In this video I am going to tell you about some #books which are very good at portraying the essence of thoughts and lives of the geniuses, which will illuminate and entertain you with tales of, brotherhood of Pythagoras, super humanness of Gauss, dispute of calculus, the lost paradise of Cantor, saving people in wars and winning of Britain in world war second with help of Turing Machine etc.
There is also a beautiful movie on Turing machine namely Imitation Game, on life of Alan Turing
The first and foremost text in the philosophy of mathematics is
“Men of Mathematics” by Prof. E. T. Bell
It is a journey of unusual life and philosophy of almost all mathematicians since 500 B.C. to 20th century era. This is an extraordinary book about tracing the majestic development of mathematical thought.
    This is my first recommendation.
Second one with unique title is “A Strange Wilderness" by Prof. Amir D. Aczel
Title of book is completely justified with tales in book. Like Archemedes famously ran naked through the streets shouting, Eureka! Eureka! And many more such tales.
Aczel’s passion for mathematics and interest in the people who make it, shine through every page of this book. This book also have some photographs having special mark in history of mathematics will certainly leave you entertained and enlightened.
This books also mentions some great indian mathematician like Aryabhatta, brahmagupta and Ramanujan.
Third in the series is, “God Created the Integers”
Interestingly title of this books is a famous saying by Kronickor, that “God created the integer and rest is work of man.” Because it is beyond the human capability to design such a sequence of integer with their entwined properties.
This book is edited with commentary by Stephen Hawking. It is the collection of Hawkings personal choice of greatest mathematician and mathematical breakthrough in the history with some original work and proof.
So, to fully understand this book, you need some mathematical background, although a general reader may skip the mathematical work and detailing in the book.
Without much detailing, Other two in the list are
“What is Mathematics” And “Mathematics and Its History”
So, these five books will complete your quest in searching the biographies of greatest mathematician and some of humanity’s greatest achievement.
It is my personal belief that reading these books will certainly provoke interest in mathematics.
    Thank you for watching

I rejected learning math as a child because none of my teachers ever explained WHY I should learn math beyond the basic, "Because you do." Nor did they take the time to actually explain HOW it worked. They just said, "Do this like that," with zero discussion of why. So after I retired from a tech career in electronics I found a book called 'The Mathematical Experience' and read it. Then I finally understood WHY there is mathematics, and how it grew into the structure it has today. Then, with that foundation I set out to teach myself mathematics. That foundational understanding was essential for me to learn math, and I simply hadn't gotten taught it. So now I spend my declining years learning to understand and use what I should have learned 50 or 60 years ago. I so wish there had been an Internet back when I was a child in the 1950's and 1960's to make up for all my poor teachers. I'm rather amazed that I never ran across a good math teacher in all those years, but they do appear to be few and far between.

The best book which gives how mathematics evolved from ancient to the first few decades of twentieth century is : Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Mordern Times by Morris Kline. It is a treatise and and is a must read for every undergraduate student.
