I listened to a very detailed account of Kharn and despite his later horrors, I actually feel sorry for him. He kept remarking that all the other Terran Astartes were beyond happy when their Primarchs showed up, but his legion, instead of a proud conquering giant, were given a broken, tortured animal. For the rest of his time before finally falling to the Blood God, all he ever wanted was for Angron to be proud of him and for himself to be proud of Angron. Then he fell, and is just as broken. I mean, kill him if you meet him, he's the worst, but still...
I too find Kharn a sympathetic character, pretty much everyone in the world eaters. The emperor perhaps made his most significant mistake, ironically one of his most inhumane acts, with how he treated his "son" Angron. He could have easily set things straight, spent time to facilitate removal of the nails and saved the other slaves if only to showcase to his son an act of uncondtional love and humanity but instead he took his beaten dog Angron, set him loose from the chain and suffered the consequences for it later. Both his treatment of Angron and Magnus are likely the largest mistakes he made. Magnus only fucked things up because the Emporer concealed the reality of the warp, forcing Magnus to learn on the fly without guidance and eventually collapsing the webway project. Angron was honorable, leading his slaves and willing to die with them and his father taught him that life is worthless, and his role was to kill without concern.
