Cool video of a cool car! Sad that someone junked it! What a wasteful society! I have an '87 Reliant LE 4dr., 2.2, auto. Perfect body, no rust, just faded paint. Needs a new headliner and the visors look like the sails of a ghost ship. The rest of the interior is great, no rips or tears, radio still works, too. Wheel covers are from a '92 New Yorker on the 14" rims. A/C switched to R-134a. Rear defroster and intermittant wipers. 135,000 plus miles and driven daily. Original Colorado car from Perkins Chrysler/Plymouth and still wears the metal dealership emblem on the trunk. Love your videos and all your Mopars!

My very first car... black 1981 Plymouth Reliant K series.... with manual transmission and AM radio. Basically this model to the T except the manual transmission. Brought back tons of memories.

I had one of these in the early 90s. I locked my keys in the car a couple of times. With those rear vent windows I was able to unscrew the cap from the outside to get the vent window open then reach my scrawny 18 year old arm inside to pop that lock. Was a decent car.

The dealership sold it straight to the junkyard new... lol We had the station wagon version as a kid, dark green and I remember the annoying buzzer.

Less rust than most 20 year old cars today.
Back then, a base model didn't even include a passenger mirror. I used to have an 81 Aries that was mostly base, though it did have an AM radio and 2.6 engine. No power steering and not even rear defog. No A/C. It always started and ran just fine but did have a lot of little things break. Of all the cars I have owned in almost 30 years, I miss that old K car the most.

I remember seeing a dark green '81 in Littleton many years ago 18+ years ago. That one had tan interior and was driven by an Asian family. Hey, if you ever happen across a 1983 black Dodge 400 coupe here in Denver please let me know. Mom traded it in 25 years ago at Saturn of Denver 10/1991. I am sure it has long since been crushed but if this car still exists who knows? I always wished I could have kept that 400 but I was only 13 at the time and didn't have a say in the matter.

Believe it or not, my antique insurance company didn't believe me when I told them that Hemi K cars would someday be rare when I first insured it as an antique... now they insure it for more than it cost new... ; )
I hate to see any of them go, but the fewer there are the better for me... so there's always that.

1:30 yes, it would difficult to crack a hard metal dashboard LoL. Production of the 1981 K-Cars began October 1980. My father ordered a 2dr SE 2.6 Hemi for Spring '81 delivery. For a 4 cylinder, that car could move out.. high revving Mitsubishi. My father had a lead foot, LoL.

The Chrysler 2.2 4cylinder engine was a domestic build . The 2.6 4 cylinder was outsourced I guess Chrysler didn't have time to build a home grown larger optioned engine when the K cars debuted .

the no roll down rear door windows were from 1981 to mid year 1982 when they added the window crank on the back doors

rmx77 Yes, you’re right. I now own an early 1982 Aries without rear roll down windows. It was manufactured in October of 1981.

nice find. my late father in around 1998 or 1999 was sold a sorta mint 1982 later model reliant with the column shift. it had a little over 39,000 miles and had been sitting but still ran. the only issues it had when my dad got it was the pcv valve failed and the alternator failed otherwise it ran fine. my dad hated the thing hated the engine in it and he got rid of the thing. to bad the only change done to it was an aftermarket radio with broken cassette deck :( it was a cheap aftermarket sadly. this one was a seafoam greenish color or whatever they called it at the time

Shame these cars never got any really respect. Chrysler needs a modern "K car" to bring them back to front fold again.

It’s also a shame for that 1998 Ford Taurus and 1996 Ford Windstar in the background.

They never will. All the auto makers are going into bigger, high dollar vehicles that people have to take massive loans out for and then get repoed 3 years into their 5 year loan.

It probably still ran people literally junk these key cars in perfectly running condition it’s hard to kill them and even when they’re dead they most likely just need a PCM

Hated that 2.6 motor. That’s the engine that gave them such a bad reputation..
No air no radio yep that was as basic as you could get and $5,990 model. Though it had the 2.6 which I guess would have been considered and upgrade over the 2.2 in performance, but not reliability. To many vacuum lines on that motor that were made of rubber..

+ChaseAnnalise Yep, Chances are that this car has been sitting for a long time. Based on the old blue emissions sticker this car probably hasn't been driven since 1993 or 1994.
