I think a big thing that helped differentiate television from film in the early days was the transition of radio shows into TV shows. I Love Lucy is the perfect example. I Love Lucy was originally the radio show My Favorite Husband. A bunch of episodes are free on TH-cam if anyone wants to give a listen.
So many Hollywood Stars were on one of the Lucy Shows, I forgot to mention Sammy Davis Jr. I believe they were friends too. He was a wonderful actor, singer, dancer all around star. Also on The Lucy Show - Lucy tries to teach Ethel Merman to sing - hilarious. Tennesee Ernie Ford appeared on I Love Lucy in two sequential episodes - it made his name and forever after he was a star!
I immediately thought of the All in the Family episode with Sammy Davis Jr. Archie Bunker confronting his attitudes when faced with a Davis is amazing.
The great Rita Moreno had a main role in the confronting drama Oz in her own right, not as a mere guest star; but she also managed to pull off the greatest guest star appearance ever, with her performance singing, against all odds, "Fever" on the Muppet Show
The two-part John Wayne I Love Lucy episodes are some of the best TV I've ever seen... I'm so glad my mom and I watched the series together. I now have my kids watching it, too.
So many Hollywood Stars appeared on one of the Lucy shows: John Wayne, Bill Holden, Tallulah Bankhead, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Dean Martin, George Burns, Jack Benny, Joan Crawford and so many others.
This was superb! As a child mother always pointed out TV stars who were Hollywood movies stars: the mother on the Munsters, the grandmother on Bewitched, the mother on The Big Valley, Phoebe on All My Children, etc, etc. Then we'd watch movies with them in their Hollywood prime. We kids couldn't believe they were the same people. For me the fact that Endora on Bewitched was the mother of Charles Foster Kane was mind blowing! It would be interesting to hear more about stars who did guest apperances vs those who became characters in the shows.
I was extremely impressed with how thorough, very well researched, and intelligently presented this documentary was. Congratulations to the creator and narrator of this video who did a first rate job!
I happened across this vid a few months ago, and as a sitcom fan, I decided to give it a view. Little did I know that I had found what would become my favorite channel on TH-cam. I am also a huge fans of classic cinema and a feminist, so of course, I love it that the channel focuses on those aspects of film. I have watched every video, some of them more than once because of the wealth of information. The videos are well-researched, the visuals excellent and stunning, and the approach lighthearted but at the same time serious. BKR is a very talented artist, and we are lucky to be able to learn from her for no charge.
Lucy on the developing 1950s television - like Chopin and the fast-evolving 1820-30s piano - made an ideal match of trailblazing technology with erupting talent, creative medium with creative spark.
Some of my favorites are Harpo Marx guest appearance on I Love Lucy. It was perfect. Even Harpo was impressed with how good Lucy was in pantomime. Shirley Booth's guest appearance on The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was a riot. She played a psychic that sussed out Captain Gregg. They had a lot of great guest stars on that show. Ruth Gordon's guest appearance on Taxi was superb. I like it best when the guest just plays a character in the show without bringing attention to themselves or a role they've played.
I haven't finished the video yet but I thought Susan Lucci and Joan Rivers were interesting cameos on Hot in Cleveland. In fact, that show had a bunch of great stars.
What a fantastically wonderful essay subject! And of course you knocked it out of the park! Didn't realize how early nor how entrenched old Hollywood was in television. Thank you for the nod to Lena Horne especially on Sanford and Son/A Different World. Fun fact: In addition to fostering collective memory, "Samford and Son" also unearthed those memory forgot. Matthew "Stymie" Beard (of the Little Rascals) played one of Fred's good friends and word on the street was Redd knew Stymie from way back and when he learned of the hard times he'd fallen on he asked him to be on the show. This channel is AMAZING! You're one of the most consistent, accurate, interesting and passionate creators on this platform!
One of the things I appreciate SO MUCH with your videos is the way ou reference your sources. It is not just an honest way to highlight great research, often by women, but also a wonderful way to let me find books if I want to explore more. You are definitely one of the top quality creators here.
You might not see this comment but I have to tell you that you are so important. Your commentary about film has been what I have wanted to put down for a long time but couldn't or didn't know how to . As a gay man who grew up in the weird 80s90s2000s of film, and even brought up with all the musicals and the classics like the B&W Little Women (I'm sorry, but the Katherine Hepburn one is the one for me), I sometimes find it difficult to look at film. I especially loved and appreciated the talk about how asians have been looked down upon in film. And even the recognition of the Asian male figure. You can't imagine how difficult it was as a young chinese male in the musical theatre crowd in the 90s being left out because there were no parts for us. Sigh... Just to say... I love your channel. It got me through a very hard time when my dad passed away a few years ago and it still keeps my mind busy today. I will contribute soon x
I love Sal Mineo's appearance on The Patty Duke show. Though it has all of the cheesy sweetness of a sitcom from that era it does include a scene which is quite candid about the difficulties of fame
Elizabeth Taylor had a clause in every contract that she be paid, along with her salary, a yard of diamonds designed by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany. Because, if you wanted Liz, ya had to pay for Liz.
This is phenomenal you touched on some of my favorite guest star appearances 🫠 Elizabeth Taylor and Richard burton on here’s lucy and the nanny , then touching on Lena on a different world . So we’ll done !!!
I'm so happy there's a TH-camr in Q3 2021 talking about how fun The Nanny is; it's fun when I watch an informative video, and I actually get most of the references
The career of Lucille Ball never ceases to amaze me. I loved that you touched on this and gave her such attention. I would be fascinated if BKR gave Lucy's triumphs a wider scope some day.
Great work as always. While not classic film stars, I do think about how the Nickelodeon sitcom Sam and Cat did a tribute to Laverne and Shirley, where Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams made an appearance. It's wild watch only to see Jannette McCurdy and Ariana Grande doing the Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated! bit from the theme song.
@@musicaltheatergeek79 lol right! “Ethel Mae you’re crying in the mashed potatoes”. Honestly the best part is the show when Lucy tries to sabotage her. It’s the funniest damn thing I’d seen as a kid and I lose it every time I watch it.
One guest star that has stuck with me is Gwen Verdon on Fame. She played Montgomery's mother in an episode. Her character clashed with the kids. They wanted to what was then modern dance and she kept pushing the more Vaudeville style. Plus we got to see her dance with Debbie Allen which was cool.
I just can't say it enough, but man oh man, thank you for being so incredibly intelligent and for doing so much research! It's such a pleasure to sit back and be entertained and be taken on a fact-filled educational journey of subtleties and not-so-subtleties and connected dots that have me nodding my head and going yup, yup, yup, oh, of course! Ah, yes...
I legitimately thought everyone had forgotten about The Nanny. I’ve been a fan since I was 12 (I’m 24 now), and almost no one I’ve talked to seems to remember it or even care about it. They’ve just thought Fran Drescher was annoying and had an annoying laugh, whereas I absolutely loved it and her, and I definitely would’ve dated her if I was her age😭
I got so excited at the mention of Patty Duke and the Patty Duke show, I started singing the theme song about a beat before it was clipped in- truly tragic that that cameo didn't happen while I was suffering through a babysitting gig with kids obsessed with Liv & Maddie. Sunday morning syndicated TV is still weird, at least around here!
Great overview. Murder she wrote is also a good opportunity to see movie and TV performers in a different setting. Though former stars play a character vs themselves the chance to experience them post prime and still contributing to the profession is heartwarming and I really enjoy it. You observations are spot on and thoughtful. Thank you for sharing them. Robert Best
What a great video! As a kid I loved seeing classic stars on “I Love Lucy” and still remember the insane anticipation I experienced waiting for the Dick and Liz episode of “Here’s Lucy” to air. That ring! The tans! Liz’ pantsuit! It did not disappoint. Thanks for highlighting this aspect of the entertainment industry.
Wait... that Beverly hillbillies Episode with Gloria Swanson is literally the same plot of the Lucy (I forget which specific show) episode with Joan Crawford 😂
Yeah! I watched so many episodes while researching this that are just straight up copies of each other. There's an episode of The Nanny where she breaks up with a guy who wants to become a clown, which is the exact plot of the Dick Van Dyke episode of The Golden Girls lol
@@bkrewind Writers can be really lazy. A show from the country I grew up in had an episode which was almost verbatim to another episode from another show, down to the title.
@@bkrewind I loved the Dick Van Dyke episode. The show did a great job of giving character actors the change to adapt to the different audience needs at the time. And a few years later, van Dyke went on to be in Diagnosis Murder.
the here's lucy episode with joan crawford was actually originally for gloria swanson ! :) gloria was supposed to guest star in the show but was replaced by joan. maybe that's why there are similarities? i'm not sure. i saw that the beverly hillbillies episode with gloria was premiered 2 years earlier than the here's lucy episode.
I will be curious to see this. It's been my experience that sitcom episodes with famous guest stars usually fall pretty flat. But, maybe my memory fails me. We'll see!

In India, we had a fine actress named Ratna Pathak Shah who did act in films and the theatre but found great success in television for 3 decades and then she got bigger roles in movies. I remember her saying that the worst thing that can happen to an actress is when she’s reduced to something irrelevant and is made to be ‘sweet’ and that television helped her ace comedy.
Check out the 80's nighttime soaps for a boatload of classic film actor appearances - particularly Falcon Crest (starred Jane Wyman and guest-starred Lana Turner, Kim Novak, Cliff Robertson, Celeste Holm, among others). Knots Landing featured Ava Gardner, Howard Duff, and Betsy Palmer. Dallas and Dynasty too!
This was fantastic. The short segment on the Golden Girl made me scream, “OMG she needs to a video essay on the Golden Girls!” And/or the history of the actresses leading up to this Legendary and Iconic sitcom!
Oh this video is fantastic. I love the guest appearances. The diamond theme continues with Liz Taylor as Helena Cassadine in General Hospital. Her diamond branding showed up everywhere for decades. One thing I love about the 80s and 90s nostalgia factor is that I could recognize many people on screen because of the movies my family. And the Tallulah bit has always been a favorite. Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, etc all saw the value in appearing because it's a good way to gain a new audience. Adapting to different stages. Women like Bea Arthur transitioned into Norman Leer type productions and doubled their audiences.
I can't imagine the amount of research, scripting and editing that goes into these videos. Your hard work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated, I really hope the TH-cam algorithm favors your content because you deserve all the ad revenue in the world.

I Love Lucy was originally the radio show My Favorite Husband. A bunch of episodes are free on TH-cam if anyone wants to give a listen.
Like Karina Longwood said, "Our Miss Brooks" was another radio show that made a successful transition to television.
Hollywood episodes of I love Lucy were iconic! That episode with William Holden and van Johnson were some of the best
Holy crap this was like made for me ive always been fascinated by this concept thank you SO much
The great Rita Moreno had a main role in the confronting drama Oz in her own right, not as a mere guest star; but she also managed to pull off the greatest guest star appearance ever, with her performance singing, against all odds, "Fever" on the Muppet Show
You forgot to mention that Eve Arden makes a quick cameo at the Brown Derby in the Hollywood at Last episode! It’s such a great moment in the episode
I didn't even start watching, but I REALLY hope to see Joan Crawford in this! 🤩
Joan Crawford appeared as herself on the Lucy show.
Wish granted.
The two-part John Wayne I Love Lucy episodes are some of the best TV I've ever seen... I'm so glad my mom and I watched the series together. I now have my kids watching it, too.
Lucy and Fred trying to lift that block of cement into his trailer was epic!
@@stepawayful Omg... So freaking hilarious!!
So many Hollywood Stars appeared on one of the Lucy shows: John Wayne, Bill Holden, Tallulah Bankhead, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Dean Martin, George Burns, Jack Benny, Joan Crawford and so many others.
That Hannah Montana transition unearthed memories I didn't even know I had.
Is this the first BKR video that has been sponsored? So happy for you, quality content deserves all the endorsements!
i never know what to say when i’m so early but i’ll just say that hannah montana transition was so hilarious to me 😭
I was extremely impressed with how thorough, very well researched, and intelligently presented this documentary was. Congratulations to the creator and narrator of this video who did a first rate job!
Fyi - Ann Morgan Guilbert pronounced her last name Gill-bear (she corrected me when I met her back in the 90s)
What I like about this channel? The research and the feeling of listening to a class in film history. This one was great too, thank you.
Waking up to this video is exactly what I needed today
‘The Nanny’ is such fun! Fran Drescher is fabulous and the one liners are just sharp and witty.
Hello my Begum
@@pranavkandpal9217 Hello to you too!
Cher's 1st appearance on Will and Grace is right up there with William Holden on I Love Lucy imo.
I haven't finished the video yet but I thought Susan Lucci and Joan Rivers were interesting cameos on Hot in Cleveland. In fact, that show had a bunch of great stars.
A cool follow up to this would be a profile on Jamie Lee Curtis who also went from film star to sitcom star back to movie star
Jamie Lee Curtis has said that she prefers being a movie star instead of a TV star.
Elizabeth Taylor was great on GH especially in her bloopers lol
I will contribute soon x
the quality in these videos keeps getting better
Debbie Reynolds on Will and Grace!!!
Everybody on Seasme Street!!!
Robin from Batman on Living Single!!!
Eartha Kitt on Living Single!!!
Eartha Kitt on Living Single was iconic
I came here to make this exact comment about Eartha Kitt + Living Single
Just when I start thinking that this channel couldn't get any better, you drop a video that opens with The Nanny. I'm hooked!
I love that you called him “guest-demon”
I love Sal Mineo's appearance on The Patty Duke show. Though it has all of the cheesy sweetness of a sitcom from that era it does include a scene which is quite candid about the difficulties of fame
Yay, you mentioned Patty Duke! One if my all time favorite actresses 💖💖 fantastic video as usual!
We share the same mind. Toni Colette, Madonna and now The Nanny! What a wonderful world we live in.
am I the only person who never skip sponsorhip segments in BKR videos? lol I love the way Isabel narrates the product!
Elizabeth Taylor had a clause in every contract that she be paid, along with her salary, a yard of diamonds designed by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany. Because, if you wanted Liz, ya had to pay for Liz.
She lived well but was also incredibly generous. She left $100M to AIDS charities.
@@collinsje5 she was one of the driving forces behind AMFAR for years 👍
This is phenomenal you touched on some of my favorite guest star appearances 🫠 Elizabeth Taylor and Richard burton on here’s lucy and the nanny , then touching on Lena on a different world .
My favorite guest star appearance will always be Tallulah Bankhead as Lucy’s new next door neighbor. Classic episode. Makes me laugh so damn hard.
I loved Fred and Ethel pretending to be the Ricardo's butler and maid, respectively.
I JUST finished rewatching The Nanny last night. Thank you for all the wonderful videos.
wishing I could have a new Be Kind Rewind video every week, I love your channel and binged all the videos way too fast❤️
What a great premise. I, too, love The Nanny!
I’m so glad there was a large focus on Lucille Ball and I Love Lucy because honestly…how do you talk about this topic WITHOUT that included?
Where are u from? I'm from Argentina and everybody who grow up watching "The nanny", love her :)

@@lostandfound3263 Same here. I remember watching it on Telefe in my childhood, back in the early 2000s

i would LOVE TO SEE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS. i love the history of television programming and I'm always interested in the culture changes in it
I got so excited at the mention of Patty Duke and the Patty Duke show, I started singing the theme song about a beat before it was clipped in- truly tragic that that cameo didn't happen while I was suffering through a babysitting gig with kids obsessed with Liv & Maddie. Sunday morning syndicated TV is still weird, at least around here!
I always talk about the time Bel Biv Devoe showed up at Uncle Phil's house in Bel Air to shoot a video. Kind of on topic.
I vote for the anthology series with film stars. Particularly Faerie Tale Theatre
Not a sitcom, but I still remember Frank Sinatra’s episode on Magnum PI.
This was soooo good! Definitely need to re-binge The Nanny and I Love Lucy after this
You mentioned A Different World! 🤯 This is why I follow you!!!! Inclusion and depth are always present in your work.
Wait... that Beverly hillbillies Episode with Gloria Swanson is literally the same plot of the Lucy (I forget which specific show) episode with Joan Crawford 😂
@@bkrewind That is absolutely hilarious!! Oh well, they are still entertaining regardless of which celebrity and which show I guess😂
I will be curious to see this.
It's been my experience that sitcom episodes with famous guest stars usually fall pretty flat.
But, maybe my memory fails me. We'll see!
You are not alone. I can't remember ever seeing a sitcom episode with a famous guest star that wasn't just awful.
I’ve just binged on a couple of your excellent offers.
Let me say that (besides the content) I value very much your varying and interesting fresh presentation, your pleasant voice and clear diction, and the unhurried, unsensationalised character of, as well as the unobtrusive background music in all your videos. Thank you!
More of youtube should be more like this.
You can find Bette Davis’s pilot on youtube. The writing is wretched, but it’s her at least.
Big Lucille Ball and Lena Horne Fan. Both brilliant women, who paved the way for many actresses today.
Falcon Crest had the best guest stars
