New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey recently spoke to Terry Gross on NPR about breaking the Harvey Weinstein story. There are some great/important tidbits in their interview about Gwyneth Paltrow that would make a great follow up to this video. Here's a link: www.npr.org/2019/09/10/759384251/she-said-reveals-the-people-and-practices-that-protected-weinstein

What do you think about Michael Caine's win for The Cider House Rules? He was up against Tom Cruise in Magnolia,Haley Joel Osment in Sixth Sense,Jude Law in The Talented Mr.Ripley and Michael Duncan Clark in Green Mile.
The Cider House Rules was a product of Weinstein company and Caine thanked him in his acceptance speech.
Caine's win for The Cider House Rules is considered one of the most undeserving wins in history of Oscars. Likely another paid Oscar by Weinstein.
Many believed the Oscar should have gone to Tom Cruise for Magnolia. It's noteworthy that Nicole Kidman once said Cruise had protected her from Hollywood rapists, thus she was never harassed. This must be why Cruise didn't win that year.

@Unism How dare you say the incidents with Louis C.K. were consensual, they absolutely were not! Two female comedians met him after the show-don't forget that he was more famous/more powerful then them; he pulls his pants down and starts masturbating! These women, who did not have the power that he did-absolutely feared career retribution! The bullshit with louis c.k. is that he came across in his comedy as a voice of conscience and he had NONE. Everyone has the right to work without someone masturbating in front of them! How would you like it if some dude masturbated in front of you while you're talking shop? Give me an f'ing break.

Best illustration of Hollywood/US ents Ind. Hypocrisy was an old episode of the normally excellent Law & Order SVU which, surprise! surprise! had a guest appearance by Whoopie Goldberg. A show which AS IT'S FORMAT: REGULARLY HAS PLOTLINES ABOUT THE VULNERABLE (USUALLY YOUNG, USUALLY GIRLS) being preyed upon pretty much ALWAYS SEXUALLY (USUALLY BY MUCH OLDER MEN). This is the SAME WHOOPIE GOLDBERG who WAS one of ROMAN POLANSKI'S BIGGEST ADVOCATES / DEFENDERS (upon being asked about that small matter that keeps him in exile she said (exact words): 'but it wasn't RAPE rape though was it?', as if emboldening the term rather than saying it just the once somehow created 2 divisions or hierarchy of such crime. Jennifer Lawrence benefited from Harveys campaign machine and then forgot to thank him when she won her Oscar. She seemed genuinely concern that she hadn't, she tried to correct that blunder for the rest of the night in her interviews. Elsa Gaxiola lets be honest though Harvey and Harvey alone got her that win. She is a good enough actress to continue to work but to be given the Oscar for a role that was very average. I’m not saying Bradly Coopers role wasn’t challenging but she was just playing a woman who knew what she did and didn’t want and it wasn’t anything special.

Saving Private Ryan is a overrated movie. Only the first 15 minute is memorable. The story was a cliché fetch quest like Lord of the Ring or Star Wars which make no sense why it would have been done, and never would have been done, where as the movie move on it widdle it cast down like action movie before it like Predator. The cliché stay where even the "villain" that is released come back for some reason to kill a character. The character beside Matt Daimen and Tom Hank are not rememberful, to the point I don't even know who dies when. Thin Red Line was better and it didn't deserve to win, Shakespear was a better story in every way compare to the three. Now against the remaining two I don't know, never seen those two.

It is very cliche girls can do anything even though only men were allowed to be actors of the era. Very unrealistic by the way that the queen would go to a common house to see a play they came to her. You don't seem to understand fetch quest either. Go here get this. What item was being fetched in Lord of the Rings or Star Wars? If you want to say a stupid journey fine but they were not fetching an item in either movie.
"Only the first 15 minute is memorable" from your opinion I remember many scenes. Notable for me was when the Germans used a 20mm to shred men off a tank they were swarming. You see people shot often in movies rarely see men taken apart into little bits like that very realistic.

Shakespeare in Love was good...in fact, it was really good. However, how it beat Saving Private Ryan has always been beyond me and, I think, many others. Has always seemed a bit wonky. Tom Hanks and crew just hit that one out of the park altogether and it was one of the very best WWII dramas of all time. The D-Day scenes were so realistic that WWII vets often stated that they got it just right.

to be fair, Meryl was never targeted by Weinstein because he didn't pursue strong women, and she didn't know about all the shit he was pulling. She's not a typical Hollywood type. She lives away from all the limelight, doesn't do the parties and hang with the industry types. She might have heard rumors, but rumors aren't facts. I worked in Hollywood for a number of years. We all heard rumors but they were usually not ascribed to one person but the industry as a whole. Believe me, Weinstein is just the tip of the iceberg. That kind of sexual abuse is rampant in Hollywood. I never experienced it cuz I was not young or pretty enough to be a target, but I heard stories. And before you ask, no, I couldn't have said or done anything. I was a nobody with no power and the stories and rumors I heard we unsubstantiated and, like I said, never named names.

It’s a great movie, one of my favorites actually, but Hollywood has clearly a different view of social inequalities; it’s more optimistic and elitist. It sells the belief that everyone can be rich if they work hard enough, it even goes as far as humanizing criminals (Wolf of Wall Street).

It’s so like Hollywood, bad characters are portrayed as human and complex (American Sniper humanizing someone who beat his wife and enjoyed killing, Joker humanizing a white guy who shot people because he was ‘mentally ill’).

This whole Harvey saga is similar to when dictators fall. During their reign everyone wanted and benefited from their power but after they've been overthrown, then the beneficiaries turn on him.
Harvey was a bad man but calling the beneficiaries of his ruthlessness 'victims' is a stretch. Actors aren't exactly on breadlines, they could have said 'No', but they didn't. They knew the game and were happy to play along until the dictator fell and now they want to sanitize themselves as 'democrats'.

Exactly! I think there were plenty of real victims with Harvey. But I don't think for a minute that Ashley Judd was one of them. I think even Gwyneth must have put up with a certain amount of molestation herself. There's no way he changed his stripes for one group of people vs another. Ashley knew what it would take to get herself in a main role, and she made that deal with the devil literally. Now, Now?! She wants to come forward and say- oh ugly man bad- but she was 100% complicite, and is really just angry at herself with her outcry. Which is years too late in my opinion to be such a noble hero for the metoo movement. The true heroic time is when you could come out and speak your truth when it HAPPENED. And she can't say she was too fragile, because her whole persona is based on how strong and confident she is. Just my thoughts

People are often forced to do unseemly things to get / maintain a job or promotion. Even a privileged young actress of old Hollywood stock was not immune to the casting couch phenomenon, and she was ABSOLUTELY a victim. She was probably leered at and commented on from a very young age, as celebrities were seen as commoditiies to be objectified, instead of human beings worthy of respect, It's easy to say "they knew the game", but sexual harrassment and abuse of women was ignored and brushed off for YEARS before women decided it was enough. People used to think it was OK to beat and imprison black people and homosexuals, should they have continued to deny their very nature and played along with the dictators? Or should they have stood up for their human rights? Just because abuse was normalized, doesn't mean it was right.

I remember seeing all of these movies at the time and I remember my reactions to them. I saw Saving Private Ryan on opening night and was blown away by the first 20 minutes. The story that followed was ok but didn't live up to the opening, and the final 30 seconds were so underwhelming that it actually ruined the whole movie for me. My personal pick of the movies nominated would have been Elizabeth (although Thin Red Line is quite brilliant). At the time I loved Shakespeare in Love, and was quite happy to see it beat out the odds on favorite that night. Now, looking back, my feelings for Private Ryan haven't changed. Shakespeare looks dated but is still a fine film to watch if you want to give the brain a rest. Elizabeth, however, still holds up as a classic to me. I've watched it many times over and I still love it.
