    I just used this jig to swap the doors in my kitchen for a quick refresh - clamping and clearing the debris each time, it made pretty quick work of the job. I'm sure I'd upgrade if I was doing it every day! And yes that mounting plate jig came in handy too for a couple of extra hinges, plus as a general purpose small square.

  • @thetallcarpenter
    @thetallcarpenter ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great little video guys, and that jig certainly takes some of the measuring when drilling out for these hinges👊

    The two little holes on the edge of the main cutter are the guide holes for pre-drilling the hinge screws.

      Sadly, they are innacurate and shouldn't be used. Only fit a very few hinges aswell. Many users have reported on them being offset from center for some weird reason, mine are too. Instead i would recommend using a selfcentering drillbit and a square after you drilled the main hole. That's how im doing it atleast

    • @kennethhunt6270
      @kennethhunt6270 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@glowpipe I am glad to hear that others have complained that the small holes meant for drilling the screw holes are off center, I complained to Kreg about this as I had the same problem, all they said was this was universal for most hinges.

  • @ironian24
    @ironian24 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I normally put my cutter in a router and put a mark on each side of the guide to ensure each end of the door is machined in exactly the same place all the time, and a big plus with using the router and rail is extraction, speed and accuracy.
    I do use the black plastic thingy to drill 5mm holes for the screws.
    I should do a video on this as it's easier, cleaner amd more accurate than the blum or kreg jig for this task.
    Great video though and always good to see other products that may help.

    I do a fair amount of custom cabinets and use this guide. Pretty much always set up to a 3mm spacing as people almost always want panneling of some kind. I've also replaced the cutter with a better one.
    People saying why not just mark out and do it by hand. It's a lot more consistent using the jig, center lines make hinges easy. Guaranteed to drill in square. And if you're adding 5 hinges to a door that's holding a heavy mirror everything will line up.
    If you use the cheap mdf from wickes it doesn't drill well. MR mdf, specifically medite drills much nicer with a lot less dust.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Alex, that is really useful information. Do you have any dust extraction on it and, if so, how?

    • @alexox
      @alexox ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SkillBuilder nah, no custom dust extraction for the jig. Seems like more trouble than it's worth. I wear a respirator if I'm doing a lot of cutting but if it's 4 hinges I will just hold my bereath.
      I keep a hoover nearby to suck up the debris. The chuck Park of that jig unclips from the main body, which I do after every cut to clear the shavings out.

    @MrSmid888 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    15 years ago when I did kitchen fitting we had a drill on a jig with a handle to offer it down onto the door. You’d set the depth stop on a scrap piece of wood. Used to do curved doors on it free hand. You can’t beat things being hard. Things are too easy these days! Have a drilled through a door? Yes 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

  • @stakkerhmnd
    @stakkerhmnd ปีที่แล้ว +8

    First. Like the champ that I am!
    I don't get the attraction of blowing all the wood dust all over the shop and in to one's boat race and nasal passages?
    Also, that wood dust is going to contain all sorts of dangerous chemicals like glue, formaldehyde and whatever else is used in the process of engineered wood composites.
    You're going to have to vacuum it up at some point? Plus it really doesn't look very clever if a client is watching.
    Blowing that dust to specifically make it airborne will ensure it goes everywhere. Like MDF dust does.

  • @MelbourneAlan

    these are great for small jobs or on site if your unsure where a hindge will land. they are not good enough for everyday drilling. i love mine for those situations. i wouldnt be without it but a proper drill press or hindge drilling set up is way better for more than small jobs.
    this tool is a prime example of making it too cheep . i woyld gladly pay double the price if they fixed the little issues with it. the dust colection, a better way to spin the drill that is quick attach or driven like the blum.
