School here in the Netherlands really messed up my accent. They teach us British English and then you're let loose into the world where most of us are mostly exposed to American English. So now my accent alternates between British and American (with of course my own Dutch accent on top lol). Thanks for your video!
I have to say that in the NL everyone speaks excellent English however the accent may be slightly different from the UK (of course it's in the middle between Germany and the UK as it is the Dutch language). I have been in the Netherlands 3 times and worked with Dutch people long time.
M-- I feel your pain. Historically, languages have been dominated by economic power; however, I cannot explain why Mandarin (or any other Chinese dialect) is not pervasive outside of China. The UK used to be a dominate economic power and most of the world is experiencing the effects of that. I have also concluded that stress and reductions are the two main reasons why Britain and American English sound different. I am also convinced Americans are hell bent or detetmined to completely shed their ties with British that they will use anything to accomplishment that objective. I was born in the Caribbean and educated in the US, which has led to my conclusion.

You're a good teacher Antonio. I'm a native English speaker taken speaking it for granted. Never heard anyone break things down the way you have. I enjoy it.
As a Native English Speaking Canadian, I think Antonio is amazing! Sometimes, as in Antonio's case, those who have learned a language to proficiency are able to teach others what they learned and how they learned what they learned to get to their levels. As a Native speaker I never even considered those things as deeply, as it is just my native language and I am used to it... even if in the word cu"t"e .. the T is never really said... I guess native speakers just know the word ends with the T and is written with a T so our brain just imagines the "T" as automatically being there..... and when someone uses a different accent or pronunciation we just hear it as being off or different but don't really know why.
@@YanaSarkar so at this point the T sound is pronounced, but stopped this happen when the T sound Is close two vowels especially when the last vowels Is lazy like a schwa or ih sound in "sit" , for a native speaker will be natural doing this .

Antonio is terrific and so talented. As a native speaker, I picked up the same thing though with your pronunciation of the word characteristic. I heard this mispronunciation on two videos. That being said, I was surprised that you aren't a native speaker of American English.

You do a good job of showing the difference between US and UK pronunciations and using linguistic terms to explain what's going on. 👏 One interesting point is that in California most people make no distinction between the o sound in law that you mentioned and a as in pot. Most Californians will pronounce thought, caught, law, etc. with the same a vowel in "pot" or "lots."
This is so beautifully explained! I am from California but I have a degree in opera singing, so I’ve had to take a lot of diction classes. It’s interesting to look back and see how studying diction has changed my own accent. For example, I’ve had friends tease me for “over pronouncing” sounds that most people with my dialect would glide over (mostly T’s) and my vowels are more succinct without strong diphthongs. Diction is cool! You’re doing great work :)
Hey I’m from the uk and I have a pretty strong British accent and there’s been I few times when I’ve needed to sound more American(mainly in voice acting) and this helps a lot, Would 100% recommend this video to people who want to sound more American
I agree with your last message. ESL learners are not obligated to imitate American accent just to become a great English speaker. It's not all about that. Just like my English teacher said before, your grammar, fluency, and articulation is far more important than the accent alone. As long as you're understood by the person you're conversing with, you're good to go. 💗
Accents are beautiful and they get a bad rap because people don’t realize the accents don’t matter at all. It is the PRONUNCIATION which matters! Someone could say that an accent can interfere with good pronunciation but really LISTENING is what is lacking more. Make listening number one if you want good pronunciation.
It is always a struggle for me to teach letter R to Koreans. I hope you could post more lessons about teaching R or R blends for Koreans or Japanese. TIA!

I'm American and a native English speaker and I recently discovered your channel. I really love your videos because they help me understand parts of the English language that I forgot or just never learned. I'm learning Korean from a Croatian tutor who is also fluent in English. She often refers to parts of the English language when teaching me Korean and I'm too embarrassed to admit that I don't know what she's talking about half the times because I don't know the parts of English speech. So, here I am watching your videos to learn. 🥴
I have been living in California for 17 years now. Most of the time I still get "what?" or "huh?" when I talking to a native American. It makes me feel frustrated of my self sometimes. I tried watching more English movies and not Asian movies/dramas. Still, it did not work. So, this video gave me answers why. Thanks you so much, Antonio!!! This is very helpful. My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. As an American myself, this was very interesting and informative. Thanks for all the details!! For myself I do usually pronouns my t’s after n’s (like in internet). Sometimes I also pronounce those silent t’s (like in cute). I guess it just depends how fast or informal I’m talking.

I have a New York accent & I personally like hearing English in foreign accents. I know others make fun of our American accent when we learn a different language... but maybe bc we have so many different nationalities in our country, a lot of us like the sounds of their accents more than our own. A lot of Americans feel that way, so don’t be ashamed of your accent & don’t beat yourself up over trying to change it! We love it over here!

A lot of us honestly didn’t even want him to better his English lol We loved him exactly how he was. So yea, don’t be ashamed! Your accent is simply telling the story of who you are/where you’re from, not how good your English is. It’s what makes you unique & what makes us jealous when you’re stealing up all the men lol

Thank you for highlighting not being obligated to have a native-like accent. One of the reasons I lost my motivation to learn German and French was because both of my teachers regulary made comments about my Hungarian accent. Keep up the great work!👏
I'm still astonished about your English proficiency, considering you haven't (as far as I know) moved to an English speaking country in your early ages. I have two theories about that: the first one is your toponymic family name (Parlati), [who is eager and pleasant to talk], and the second, your good ear for music. After been an adult person who has been learning English as a second language, I can say that your case is pretty unique.
I think he mentioned in one of his videos that he learned English when he was 11 and he used to watch American TV shows and movies and imitate the sounds of the accent. I know someone who did the same thing when he was 12 but he did it with British accent and now he speaks English like a British person. But as an adult, it’s almost impossible to be able to speak like a native, and there is no need to do that. By the way, I think he is an amazing teacher

First class of ESL in USA 10 years ago: I'll never forget our teacher saying that English is our second or third language. We should feel so proud of the process that we are doing to learn the language. I really appreciate your closing words. I work under a call center and I experience a lot of customers who bashes or mock me when they notice that I'm not a native speaker. And that's one of the main reasons why I started watching videos like this to at least improve my accent. I'm Dutch, and help dutch accent Is so on the end of ur mouth its really choppy and you speak consonants really loud. Its in my opinion one of the most ugly english accents to have while trying to speak english. So here I'm trying to improve. So thank you for the video!

No one caught that he mispronounced "characteristics"? 😂 It's funny because this is an accent video. Also, I am from the US. Your "if you know what I mean" after your odd way of saying American came across as very condescending. Also funny that you cover the stop t later but you ignore it earlier in the video. It's not seen as lazy unless you're a foreigner who doesn't use the stop t.
I am an teacher in Philippines and I teach English, your videos really helped me in my lessons to my students,especially in their English pronunciation skills. You speak fluently and clearly.
You're a really great teacher brother. I can learn more easily with you than I do with others whose teaching videos I've beening watching for some months, only because of your amazing capability to make complicated things so nice and lucid and easy to grab. I am from Calcutta in India and I studied in school and college in my vernacular language i.e Bengali. So whatever English I have learned I mostly did on my own efforts. And because there hadn't been any teacher to correct me there remained many lacunas in my learnings . Some are grammatical and other are spoken/colloqualism and phonetics related. The former type of error seemed easier to correct with the help of books but the latter are the things where I seem to be stuck for ever. And because of this I can't understand English movies or songs or complicated discussion on TVs etc. which I so so desire to understand. And this is where you and other teachers are coming to my help a great deal. So thank you so very much ang God bless you.

Yeah we need Ideology like yours in India very hard, there are too much stereotypes about languages in India, for instance if you speak english here you are considered more educated than the people speaking in native Indian languages, schools punishes students who don't use english well, and too more things are their.

I really love your videos because they help me understand parts of the English language that I forgot or just never learned. I'm learning Korean from a Croatian tutor who is also fluent in English. She often refers to parts of the English language when teaching me Korean and I'm too embarrassed to admit that I don't know what she's talking about half the times because I don't know the parts of English speech. I have been living in California for 17 years now. Most of the time I still get "what?" or "huh?" when I talking to a native American. It makes me feel frustrated of my self sometimes. I tried watching more English movies and not Asian movies/dramas. Still, it did not work. So, this video gave me answers why. Thanks you so much, Antonio!!! This is very helpful. I will put into practice all that I have learned from here and will keep you posted.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. needed to leave this comment, im brazilian and i've been fluent in english for almost five years now, my accent was easy to understand (i talk to native and another english speakers constantly) but this year i started getting annoyed by some accent "mistakes" that i didn't wanna do but still did it anyways, well i've been watching your videos everyday for a month now, shadowing everything you say for at least ten minutes and taking some notes, and today one of my friends asked me why do i sound like a native speaker lately, (need to confess i jumped outta bed and did a little happy dance), i know everybody have an accent and i loved mine, however i'm always impressed when i hear someone that learned english confusing people with their "native accent", and that's my goal now since i already speak the language hahhahah anyways your channel has been such a big help i needed to stop by to tell you how grateful i am, especially when you're such a great teacher and anyone can tell you love teaching, thank you so sooo much❤️

As an American myself, this was very interesting and informative. Thanks for all the details!! For myself I do usually pronouns my t’s after n’s (like in internet). Sometimes I also pronounce those silent t’s (like in cute). I guess it just depends how fast or informal I’m talking.
Pronounce, not pronouns, but that's fine. Spelling is certainly easier for us Italians.

I have a New York accent & I personally like hearing English in foreign accents. I know others make fun of our American accent when we learn a different language... but maybe bc we have so many different nationalities in our country, a lot of us like the sounds of their accents more than our own. A lot of Americans feel that way, so don’t be ashamed of your accent & don’t beat yourself up over trying to change it! We love it over here!

So no worries! If you need some inspiration, look up videos of a Japanese baseball player named Munenori Kawasaki speaking. He came over here to play, but couldn’t speak nearly any English. But what ended up making him the fan favorite was how confident he was still. We found it so endearing - everyone wanted to hear him, he was the star of the show. A lot of us honestly didn’t even want him to better his English lol We loved him exactly how he was. So yea, don’t be ashamed! Your accent is simply telling the story of who you are/where you’re from, not how good your English is. It’s what makes you unique & what makes us jealous when you’re stealing up all the men lol

Thank you for highlighting not being obligated to have a native-like accent. One of the reasons I lost my motivation to learn German and French was because both of my teachers regulary made comments about my Hungarian accent.

I'm still astonished about your English proficiency, considering you haven't (as far as I know) moved to an English speaking country in your early ages. I have two theories about that: the first one is your toponymic family name (Parlati), [who is eager and pleasant to talk], and the second, your good ear for music. After been an adult person who has been learning English as a second language, I can say that your case is pretty unique.
I think he mentioned in one of his videos that he learned English when he was 11 and he used to watch American TV shows and movies and imitate the sounds of the accent.
I know someone who did the same thing when he was 12 but he did it with British accent and now he speaks English like a British person.
But as an adult, it’s almost impossible to be able to speak like a native, and there is no need to do that.

First class of ESL in USA 10 years ago: I'll never forget our teacher saying that English is our second or third language. We should feel so proud of the process that we are doing to learn the language. Our effort, making mistakes and keeping learning, it doesn't matter our edge, educational level that we got in our lives before. We are incorporating a new culture to our lives with a new language. I really appreciate your closing words. I work under a call center and I experience a lot of customers who bashes or mock me when they notice that I'm not a native speaker. And that's one of the main reasons why I started watching videos like this to at least improve my accent. I'm Dutch, and help dutch accent Is so on the end of ur mouth its really choppy and you speak consonants really loud. Its in my opinion one of the most ugly english accents to have while trying to speak english.

No one caught that he mispronounced "characteristics"? 😂 It's funny because this is an accent video. Also, I am from the US. Your "if you know what I mean" after your odd way of saying American came across as very condescending.
Also funny that you cover the stop t later but you ignore it earlier in the video. It's not seen as lazy unless you're a foreigner who doesn't use the stop t.

I am an teacher in Philippines and I teach English, your videos really helped me in my lessons to my students,especially in their English pronunciation skills. You speak fluently and clearly.
You're a really great teacher brother. I can learn more easily with you than I do with others whose teaching videos I've beening watching for some months, only because of your amazing capability to make complicated things so nice and lucid and easy to grab. I am from Calcutta in India and I studied in school and college in my vernacular language i.e Bengali. So whatever English I have learned I mostly did on my own efforts. And because there hadn't been any teacher to correct me there remained many lacunas in my learnings . Some are grammatical and other are spoken/colloqualism and phonetics related. The former type of error seemed easier to correct with the help of books but the latter are the things where I seem to be stuck for ever. And because of this I can't understand English movies or songs or complicated discussion on TVs etc. which I so so desire to understand. And this is where you and other teachers are coming to my help a great deal.

Yeah we need Ideology like yours in India very hard, there are too much stereotypes about languages in India, for instance if you speak english here you are considered more educated than the people speaking in native Indian languages, schools punishes students who don't use english well, and too more things are their.
