I doubt Eccleston would want to, but with Big Finish doing a "First Doctor Unbound" series next year, there is a chance we could see them explore this path. I would love it if they did, and get Eccleston and Piper back working together for a series of possibilities...

Having the Master die in 9s hands would be PHENOMENAL. Perhaps after an arc where he comes to terms over the time war, The Master’s death pushes him over the edge and he abandons their companion to do a few solo episodes. In that time he can learn that companionship is in fact what he needs. And he returns to his old friends one by one, checking in to see how they’re doing. Upon meeting Donna again, she is excited and tells him about the adipose, leading into the meat of the next season

Credit where it's due for really deviating from the initial story over just 'S2 but with Eccleston'.
But that said, I can't help there's a big misread of 9 and his character. After his 'everybody lives' moment he's very clearly a changed, more optimistic man as seen in Boom Town. He's almost 9.5. And similarly Jackie likes the doctor not because he's 10 and friendlier but because he sent Rose back - as she says in Parting of the Ways. This script really seems to make him too much of an edgy psycho corrupting those around him and ignores how much healing he did in S1 + how he typically inspired those around him to be better.

Hot take: Out of the two RTD Doctors, I think 9 is better than 10. As good as Tennant was, Eccleston seriously deserves more screen time out of any other Doctor along with McGann since I feel he left too early! It was understandable as to why, but still. You really click with him once Series 1 concludes, and as such he cozily puts himself up there as my 2nd favorite incarnation right behind the 11th.

I imagine School Reunion with Nine opposite. He meets his old friend from better times long before the war and learn that life's continues no matter what. Maybe there are civilizations that had been touched by a Time War. But there are much more people who just lived. So his whole life is not limited by this catastrophic event. There were good times too and he can have more of it in the future if he wants to.

For context I attempted suicide 3 times, please keep your "better times are coming" or "sorry man" to yourself, it's the context not for sympathy farming. I got to run into a friend from my trucking days, and he mentioned that I'm a vastly different person. This was about a year after my 3rd attempt, which was strangely helpful to my mental health as it was my revelation that I'm not actually ok. It did make me a darker person and more open to the topic of death. As I was mentioning this to him he started questioning if he ever actually knew me. • @sanddagger36

I'm sure Christopher and Catherine Tate would have a wonderful dynamic.
They could even have her appear in the "runaway bride" while Martha is still a companion. Then she is the one who gets stuck in the Tardis and whisked away to the geneses planet in "the doctor's daughter"
At that part Martha may choose to stay there with the Hath to help them rebuild.
Maybe when Jennie dies, the doctor will not just let it go because Rose just died. So he works hard to make her regenerate and she becomes a new companion after that.
Then split all the light-hearten episodes like "Unicorn and Wasp" from ones like "midnight." Donna would only be present for the first half of what would be series 3, before going home and leaving 9 and Jennie to have all the serious adventures like "silence in the library."
However, once River Song dies, Jennie will become obsessed with finding out who she was and when the doctor refuses because of spoilers, she takes the square gun and the vortex manipulator and runs off on her own adventures in time.
This leaves the doctor alone again for an episode "Midnight" until Kate Stewart calls him back to Earth for the "The Sontaran Stratagem"
With no one else on earth he cares about, he calls Sarah Jane and Donna Noble to make sure they are safe when the sky gets poisoned.
Neither one plays all that big of a role in the solution, but right afterward Donna collapses with apparent memories of "Turn Left" just appearing in her mind.
They rush into the Tardis and the Earth disappears beneath them.
In "the stolen Earth" the emotional reunion at the end is with Martha and not Rose. She has been recruited by the Shadow Proclamation because she is officially the last human in the galaxy because Earth disappearing in 2008 means that no human colonies ever went out into the stars.
Again the doctor gets shot but he shrugs it off. Then he resolves the reality bomb in a similar way because Donna uses her second brain from "Turn Left" to learn the Dalek controls and kill them all. They fly the Earth home and The doctor erases Donna's memories of "Turn Left" and then goes outside to talk to Wilf to give him instructions on what not to do around Donna. There Wilf sees him collapse and regenerate due to the effects of the Dalek shot he was still suffering from. This leaves the specials to be either David Tenant's or Matt Smith's, whoever you prefer.

And they didn't even get to meet at the read-through - Catherine couldn't make it to that for whatever reason - so they met on set when they filmed the rooftop scene, then quickly became very good friends irl. They've both talked about that in interviews. However, I completely agree Ten would have to be there for a season four with Donna! Taking a few issues with this.
    1. It is said that Jack would've stayed on had Eccleston stayed. It's clear they were setting up more with him with the whole time agent mysterious past thing.
    2. Smith and Jones doesn't work as a companion's first adventure. You need to wow the companion, see her experience the adventure for the first time. A trip to a 21st century hospital in a slightly different Earth than she's used to is not that. Sure there's some excitement to come later than the moon, but the Doctor is supposed to impress you on your first adventure. End of the World, William Shakespeare, Ancient Rome, Starship UK, 1500s Venice, Akhaten, A colony on another planet, all impressive places and Martha just gets, slightly different Earth.
    3. The idea of Martha softening the Doctor and not being moulded by him like Rose would be great... except that is exactly what Rose was doing in Series 1, you just changed her character to suit the narrative.
    4. The idea of two finales in a row being solved my magic Bad Wolf omnipotency feels extremely cheap, even if it does come at the cost of Rose's life. It works for a one time thing, Parting of the Ways only gets away with it because of a regeneration. Without that, Rose really should just die. Obviously RTD is unlikely to do that, but come on.

This was a very interesting deviation from the original plotline, but I really liked it. The choices you made, I found to be very in-character for the Ninth Doctor and the decisions in the episodes expressed his story arc in a deeply engaging way. I'd love to see this continue and if possible see Nine meet Donna, she'd constantly be slapping him around as he'd probably pout about it.

  • @HuntingViolets
    @HuntingViolets 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

I actually think the Tenth Doctor is darker than the Ninth Doctor. They both like to goof around and have adventures; is Ten really any happier? And Rose and Ten making a mockery of the situation in "Tooth and Claw" is much darker than taking it seriously. That is what led Queen Victoria setting up Torchwood originally. Rose is a dark character in Series 2 because the Tenth Doctor enables that, while the Ninth Doctor and Rose acted as brakes against each other's worst tendencies ("Father's Day," "Dalek"). (Rose's later use of the dimension cannon can be seen as dark and Ten's burning up a sun to say goodbye--although there can also be more benign explanations.) I'm surprised you don't find Eccleston's Doctor to be "wisecracking and charismatic" because I absolutely do.
I think a relationship between Nine and Reinette makes more sense than with Ten, actually, because we are constantly shown Ten and Rose being infatuated with each other, while Nine falling for someone else doesn't seem as if the Doctor is being taken over by an AU version for a single episode. Although I certainly think there is a flirtatious aspect and some romantic subtext in the first season, Nine could easily have gotten involved with Jabe, for instance, without Rose minding that much, and Rose was interested in at least three other men, including being willing to spend the night in a hotel with Mickey. The idea of Mickey and Reinette is certainly interesting, though, and I probably would have preferred something like that for the Tenth Doctor (for reasons I have already expressed).
I think you could still do "Christmas Invasion" because Nine could need to recover from taking the energy from Rose in (a retitled) "Parting of the Ways." Maybe things could have gone better for Harriet Jones. The Tenth Doctor disposes of Britain's Golden Age without much thought. Why couldn't we still have a swordfight? I'm certainly down with getting a Metacrisis Nine. :)

The 'Bad Wolf Entity' makes nonsense of The Time War. Why idn't the Time Lords just do what Rose did and destroy the Daleks that way, without their own mutual destruction ? It might have cost one Time Lord one regeneration, but surely that would be a worth-while sacrifice ?

this was such a fascinating dive into an alternate scenario! in regards to your comment about it feeling 'fanfiction-y', at this point writing anything for dr who would feel like writing fanfiction, imo. it's in a unique position amongst television, only joined by things like star trek or other very long-running television programmes, as there's more similarities between a fanfiction and the actual stories due to the constant evolution and continuation by fresh writers of the programmes. I could be wrong, of course, and if I manage to find out I'll probably update with that knowledge lol

This video inspires me! It is a thing of beauty.
There are so many times fan content trashes every smallest detail and second guesses every choice the writers made. They just trash the original creative work. In their imaginations, their version would be worshiped and held beyond criticism.
This happens so much that you start to see the whoniverse as a toxic cesspool of Galactic dimensions. You think, "I'll just buy the DVD's, enjoy the hell out of them and completely ignore and block anthing else".
But there are some pretty cool fans. Dr. Who means so much to so many different kinds of people that seeing it through their eyes is always insightful.
Anyway, you start with their creative work, accept it for what it is and go on to make your own creative and valuable content. And I think have a good intuition for how their perdonalities might develop. Well done!!!

As much as I loved Eccleston's portrayal of the Doctor.... I'm not sure I could have seen him pull off the meeting with Sarah Jane Smith with the same kind of giddy excitement that Tennant had. And that worked so well, I'm kind of glad things worked out as they did. Liz Sladen only had just so many years as that point.

Always found it interesting that rose absorbs the time vortex and then the doctor saves her and rose is completely fine afterwards (yes I know it would have killed her eventually if the doctor hadn't done something) but when the doctor absorbs it and then releases into the tardis even though he only had it for a few seconds it still causes enough damage to force him to regenerate

What are the worst things that happened in the show’s history?
1 Phillip Hinchcliffe, the brilliant young producer of the show whose creativity created a golden age of stories unceremoniously replaced by the inferior Graham Williams
2 John Nathan Turner being handed the reigns of the show and gradually turning it into a silly pantomime over the years.
3 The Paul McGann movie failing to pull in the viewers leaving fans without potentially an all time great Doctor for the 90s
    4 Christopher Eccleston quitting.

  • @Enjay001
    @Enjay001 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

A reasonable set of "what if" conclusions and theories.
All I know is that I was gutted that Christopher Eccleston only did one series. Eccleston is a brilliant actor and has been one of my favourites for a very long time (since he started to come to prominence in the early 90s I guess). I thought his interpretation of the Doctor was fantastic (ahem). For me, there was no settling in period; he was the Doctor instantly. I was absolutely glued to the screen whenever he was on, totally commanding it and the role.
I believed the PTSD, war-damaged Doctor completely and the redemption path that he was on. The moments of rage (e.g. meeting the Dalek in the episode of that name) or the sprks of hope that things mught just work out sometimes (e.g. when he was willing the nanogenes to figure things out and allow "eveyone [to] live, just this once" in The Doctor Dances - honestly, The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances is probably still my favourite new era story).
And that's not to dump on anyone who has followed him. The quality of actors who have taken the role since the show's resurrection is stellar. I just wanted more Christopher Eccleston than we got.

Quite an insightful alternative to the series 2 we ended up getting.
With that in mind, however, I don't think I agree with Martha's ark in comparison to what we see in series 3. Despite her unfair treatment, it sets a purpose to not only the Doctor's flawed mindset on Rose, but it also challenges them both with their diametrically opposed perspectives.
As for Mickey, I do feel that he needed someone to get over Rose - and with a strong soul like Madam Pe Dompidor, (I no doubt butchered the correct spelling xD) it certainly gives the story a plot device to move things forward.

I don't think the ending to new earth would be darker just because it's 9 instead of 10. Incarnations of the doctor are alowlled to go through change and growth, in series one 9 definitely softens up by the end because of the connections he had with Rose and 10 even said Rose made him better. 12 became less angry and cold like 9, 10 got less happy I felt, and even 11 became less irratable, I think 9 showing Casandra compassion would show character growth for 9.
9s arc in series one to me is him finally letting himself heal his trauma from the time war and thus we get 10

On a trivial note, I wonder what changes might have been made, if any, to the Ninth Doctor's costume if he stayed after Series One, as we have seen with other incarnations that the outfits have changed or updated during and after their first season to keep things fresh. In the Ninth Doctor's case, I think he would keep the same leather jacket, or possibly get a new one to show his journey of recovering from the Time War trauma, and he would use some of the jumpers from Series One again along with a few new jumpers in different colours, patterns and features like buttons, or styles like a turtle neck instead of a v-neck like the jumper Eccleston wore in his prototype costume.
I also wonder if the Ninth Doctor would keep his hair short or let it grow a bit longer, much like the Third, Sixth and Twelfth Doctors.

I feel like in the school episode with Sarah Jane, Nine wouldn't have replaced K-9 after the heroic sacrifice.
He was a little colder, a little darker, and I feel that his way of seeing some loss as simply collateral would mean he wouldn't gift a new model.
This could leave room for him to have cameoed after season 2 here, when he is healing, to bring that model to her.
I would love to see season 3 done, as I'm quite curious how you think the Titanic episode would have gone, given it once again has a romance subplot.
