      This Solo is brilliant........simply perfect........
It has all a perfect solo needs.....variations of the theme added with his own perfect fitting creation.
No one can play a solo with so few notes but expressing so much emotion.......
Emppu is at least to me a guitar god.

I love that they don't just make crazy guitar solos just to show off their technical skill. They play what is best for the music for its own sake. The guitar solo in this song might be the simplest one in the whole concert, but it is exactly what my ears wanted to hear in that moment!

Being born in 1960 I love Beatles through Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Mike Oldfield and such. And I knew Deep Purple, Kiss and Boston in seventies Discovering Nightwish in the last few years was great, I do not love all metal, but they are melodically, balanced and gorgeous in studio and live performance. Just love it.

You definitley understand the unique quality and style of this metal band. Music filled with beautiful and emotional stories and melodies.
One of my all time favorites. based on a hypothetical scenario imagined by Tuomas.
This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas inner child speaking.
When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..."
Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side.
In archaeological excavations done in Karelia, a child was found and its body was laying upon a wing of a swan. In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. When a swan dropped its head below the surface, people of old times believed that it was communicating to the spirit world.
Killing swans was a terrible crime because it was as bad as murdering a human. Punishments for killing swans were severe, the usual penalty was death.
Swan song often symbolizes an artist´s last performance but for a long time all across the world all the way to the 17th century it was believed that swans only sang when they died.
A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.

Here are the spoken words from Dead Boy's Poem.
    "If you read this line
Remember not the hand that wrote it
    Remember only the verse
Songmaker's cry, the one without tears
For I've given this its strength
And it has become my only strength
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew The sweet piano writing down my life"
"Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me I'm sorry
Time will tell, this bitter farewell
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
And you I wish I didn't feel for you anymore"
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul

Not only is it the only song where Emppu does not smile, but he wiggles his fingers trying to hurry up the song as he waits for the next note. This song reaches into your chedst and massages your heart. Each virtuoso in this band not only plays with passion, but they play each song like their life depends on it. Not a single ego in the entire band, they share the spotlight and nobody every tries to steal the song. They play EXACTLY what is needed to make it a masterpiece, and that goes for each and every song. Best band in the world with the greatest composer of my lifetime!

Great reaction. Loved your energy and enthusiasm. One of my top 5 Nightwish songs. One of the more personal songs for Tuomas and the fans. An old song written by Tuomas when he was young. Inspired by the question what would you say if you knew you were going to die tomorrow. Tuomas has said this song was a way of thanking all those who deserve his thanks and a piss off to all those who deserve it as well. Tuomas often uses the dead boy as a symbol of the loss of childhood innocence and imagination that we experience as we grow into adulthood. When you hear dead boy or poet in his lyrics he is usually referring to himself. He also has a strong connection to the ocean and sees it as a place of peace and tranquility. A refuge from the modern world. So in this song Tuomas is saying that he no longer lives for himself or his friends but only for the music. He puts all his feelings into the music and his music is what gives his life meaning. He tries to make his life better but can never get back to the innocence of his youth. He wants to be loved but can't connect with people. He asks that they remember his music, not him, after he is gone. Thus a lonely soul, an ocean soul. Note that on the video wall behind the band the boy is holding up his arms to several swans. In Finnish mythology swans are the creatures that guide your soul to the afterlife.
Floor has a fan at the base of her mic stand to keep her cool and get that blowing hair effect. Her stage outfits are custom designed for her. This outfit and those from the Human Nature tour were designed for her by Royal Black Couture and Corsetry in Vienna and are inspired by a steampunk aesthetic. For your next Nightwish video I recommend one of my other top 5, Shoemaker. The lyric video is my favorite for it's epic visuals, especially during the operatic ending, but the live performances from Hellfest an Deichbrand in 2022 are amazing as well. Song is a tribute to planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker, the only person whose remains are on another celestial body (placed on the moon in crater named for him by NASA) and an ode to human exploration.

About Floor Trained in Classical music and theatre and also a school of rock which Floor also trained in a few instruments like guitar and keyboard. Floor joined the band After forever at age 16 as a backup vocalist but then became lead vocalist shortly after. Floor's heart was broken after a relationship failed with one of the guitarist who left her for her vocal couch the band broke up and Floor along with her friend keyboard player Joost and formed Revamp. During this time Floor also had a side project called Northward but didn't finish the album until after she was with Nightwish. Floor became unwell from overworking Burnout and taken a break during that time at her sisters wedding Floor received a call from Tuomas pleading for her to help finish their American tour as there lead vocalist Anette who was pregnant became very unwell and was rushed to hospital. Sadly for Anette because she kept becoming unwell and was not recovering any time soon the band made the decision to let her go After convincing Floor to join there band. Floor Dissembled her band Revamp as she couldn't commit to two bands at once and Nightwish was massive. Floor has made cover songs during covid and has performed on the Beste Zangers show ( Best Singers ) also Sing Meinen song. Floor has performed with many other groups Evergrey, Epica and Ayreon plus couple of song with Avantasia. Floor has her own solo album which is more popish called Paragon. Floor also has sung Christmas carol songs and can sing in multiple languages like Dutch, Finnish, German, Italian, Spanish, English to name a few. and lives on a small farm with her Husband the drummer for Sabaton his name is Hannes. They have a daughter named Freja and is expecting another child. Floor has cats, dogs and Horses and also a vege garden and is an Empath a very down to earth kind hearted soul.

Well Jules, you’re *really* getting the idea here about Nightwish. It’s the musicality of the pieces! Very nice reaction, thank you! Just Nightwish doing Nightwish things! And as you have surely noticed, although they are all outstanding, none of them standout. And this is one of my favourites. "Dead Boy's Poem" is brilliantly beautiful and really touches the heart. It is the only song I've seen where Emppu does not smile as he plays. You can also see his emotion as he waves his fingers at the strings during the solo, almost wanting the poignant pause to hurry up. A couple of suggestions:
"The Poet & The Pendulum" requires a bit of background ... it is considered one of the "holy trinity" and is the most devastatingly emotional songs. I'd wait until you have a stronger feel for the band and their songs.
In my opinion, the masterpiece and greatest composition of my lifetime is "The Greatest Show on Earth" and is the musical interpretation of the Richard Dawkins book on Evolution. It tells the entire story of this planet, and the life upon it, in approximately twenty minutes. It is so brilliantly composed, that I believe one should get college credits in evolutionary science for listening to it. You might want to research the lyrics to understand the significance of the poetic and allegorical phrasing. Enjoy the journey!

So many reactors say they feel that positive energy among Nightwish members. And it's not just blind luck to have right people for the band: For Tuomas, this is an essential condition for the existence of this band.
Many people were upset when Tuomas fired their first bassist Sami in 2001, and then the band fired their first singer Tarja in 2005, and then their second singer Anette in 2012. Perhaps they could coexist together for even longer time, with many conditions and maintaining a purely professional relationship, but Tuomas simply doesn't see the point in this, as he wrote in his open letter to Tarja. It is critically important for him that all the members of Nightwish be like family, and not just as colleagues. And thanks to this, the band, after 27 years, still retains the atmosphere and energy that many other bands have long lost.

    Great reaction! Some background stuff.
Swan on the screen: In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. Tuonelan Joutsen (Swan of Tuonela) carries the dead to afterlife.
Tuomas composed this when he was 22 years old. This from their book, timeline year 2000:
    ------------------------
Besides the choir, the album featured some other guest artists, Ike Vil of Babylon Whores contributed some deranged self-inspection for 'The Kinslayer', and 'Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish 12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew (the English-Finnish director and writer) Neil Hardwick well, and my mom remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away. It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy, he seemed like such a citizen of the world and was actually familiar with our band, too. Sam said he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call. He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there."
The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas. "When he arrived at the studio, I had to ask him to wait for ten minutes or so, and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read", Tuomas says. "I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing, and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times."
"When I started talking about his reward, he wouldn't hear anything about it. He just said "It's okay, it was fun". I insisted on giving him at least a couple of hundred marks, and then he left. A very puzzling young man, but a real pro and a very nice person. He later did the beginning of 'Bless the Child', too, and once again, everything worked like a charm. 'Dead Boy's Poem' continues to be a sort of a signature song for Nightwish, and after 'Wishmaster' came out, the song was voted on our web site as the best Nightwish song ever. There's certainly something about it that defines us, and - for me at least - the poem is the absolute high point of the song. So Sam Hardwick made a big contribution to our music."
For Tuomas, 'Dead Boys Poem' is a deeply personal song. "The idea for that song came to me when I was thinking that if I die tomorrow, what kind of a message do I want to leave behind", Tuomas explains. "That song is all about apologizing, about saying thank you to those who deserve it - and likewise telling those who deserve it to fu*k off. It's kind of a testament. I had to make a song like that, just in case I happened to die tomorrow. A Finnish man rarely thanks anyone, or says he's sorry, but for me at least, it was possible through music."
"I still live at my mom and dad's, who are the best people in the world, but I've never been able to tell them what I think about them", Tuomas confesses. "Maybe if they listen to the song and read the lyrics, they'll understand that it's partly about them, too. It's also about my best friends and Nightwish, the band that has come to be a significant - if not the most significant - part of myself in the course of years. My band mates are really important to me, but it's hard for me as a Finnish man to show my feelings. I'd rather write a song like 'Dead Boy's Poem' and ask them to listen to the words, because I just can't say it out loud. It's such a personal song, and I think it has the best lyrics I've ever been able to write. Musically, it's really good, too, definetely the best song on 'Wishmaster' - maybe the best Nightwish song ever."
It had not gone unnoticed by Tarja (1st lead singer) that Tuomas expressed his feelings through music. "The melodic power of music - and the fact that music can be beautiful even at its heaviest - has always meant an awful lot to Tuomas", Tarja says. "He's able to show all his feelings in his music. I think Tuomas is very brave, because not many people can do the same. He may not look like a macho man, but when it comes to music, It's all or nothing for him."

Floro loves and hates the song at the same time because she has to sing so high. The song is from 2000 and therefore a Tarja song. While Floor sings her typical "musical song", Tarja sings it as an "opera song":
Nightwish - 11 Dead Boy's Poem (From Wishes to Eternity DVD)
Tarja sang the song mainly in 2000 and 2004. Anette only a few times in 2009. Floor has it often in 2018 on the Decades Tour and only there.
The ballads on the last tour were two acoustic versions, only one of which is not available as a FanCam:
Nightwish - How's The Heart Acoustic (Planet Rock acoustic session)
Floor Jansen - Our Decades In The Sun (Live)

10:33 "She is such a storyteller", the very best Jules. I'll get back to that after another quote that resonated with me about their music being so musical and then: "I have to be honest.. I don't always enjoy listening to metal bands". I do, but the more melodic stuff really stands out these days. If you go to a fairly big festival like Summer Breeze, you will find the "musical" & storytelling bands but the usual fare has become pretty formulaic "fok u & goto h3ll you modderfokkin' modderfokker" stuff.
I got to see Epica (you did one a-typical song by them, ft. Floor. I'd suggest you check out "EPICA feat. APOCALYPTICA - Rivers (Live At The AFAS LIVE)"). They really stood out among the other acts on display. Didn't get to see BlackBriar there, unfortunately. Same with them: way more melodic than your average metal band and like NW, Epica & some other melodic metal acts, really superb storytellers. (1/2)...

      @BrendonChase_2015 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Speaking of storytelling & cool recommendations.. I think you might be ready for the superbestest of superb storytellers in the scene (in my view at least..). Arjen Anthony Lucassen, a mastermind composer/musician you'll never see on tour, cuz he doesn't. You have to come to him, in the Netherlands when his band/project lures ppl from 60+ different countries to his shows (performed in one weekend, like the 5 concerts they did just the other day).
The "band" is named after the main character who stars in a "space metal opera" spanning many albums. A grand tale of an existential intergalactic quest for meaningful, human survival. He's a blind minstrel living in 6th C. Albion, who receives vision (messages actually) from the future. Would you like to know his name? His name.. is AYREON!
You'll see what I did here when you watch the introduction to the 2017 Ayreon Universe Live concert. And while Ayreon's live performances are the preferred way to experience it all, the goto introduction is a stunning music video to a true masterpiece of melodic metal, featuring 11 singers (with some familiar faces!). So no more fanboi talk, here goes: "Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down - The Source (2017)". I'll provide the l!nk in a follow-up comment. Enjoy & Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

Tuomas' self-written eulogy - before The Poet and The Pendulum. It's why Emppu looked so serious during his solo. It's about how Nightwish recreated him when he created Nightwish. Floor has a Floor-fan (among millions!).... on the floor in front of her!!!... and she could barely stand, sick, about 30 minutes before going on stage!

Check out How's the Heart, acoustic version if you would like to hear something more intimate and pure vocals...... Its a duet with Floor and Troy in acoustic guitar and backing harmony vocals..... thats it, just the two of them in a studio setting and it is ridiculous...... Probably one of the hardest melodies a vocalist could attempt to sing, and as usual Floor makes it seem effortless...... sitting down no less, lol ..... Also I can't recall if you've reacted yet to Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley....... Epic, stunning, ridiculously amazing, and Greatest Show on Earth...... I prefer the Tampere version for its grandiocity!

What you are describing as that epic cinematic soundtrack feel, with strong storytelling elements, is arguably what symphonic metal is all about. I can't think of any other genre where you can get a track about the devil and a mermaid having an argument about the ocean and have it not only make sense, but have a coherent story structure to it ("Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" - also live in Buenos Aires).
In terms of sheer musicality, notwithstanding the great solo here, and Marko and Troy just looking like they are having a great jam session - Tuomas has a passion for music that is so complete that their current album Human. :II: Nature has a second CD which is all orchestra.

Top 4 Nightwish dong for me in this performance.
The only song I know in which Emppu doesn't smile.
Tuomas' most personal song at the time and he has commented on the making of the album version:
"Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy boy reciting reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish so I had to find a
12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's Sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew [the English-Finnish director and writer] Neil Hardwick well, and my mum remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away.
It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy he seemed like such a citizen of the worldand was actually familiar with our band too. Sam sa is d he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call.
He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there. The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas.
"When he arrived at the studio, had to ask him to wait for ten minutes or so and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read".
Tuomas says, " I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times."
Corsetry, by the way, custom made one-off, promised never to be made for anyone else, was designed and made by Royal Black Couture in Austria.

This song is more about Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboards man, and the writer and composer of their music! I can identify with the words to the song...I have been an artist since I was a young boy, and I know that I was very frustrated, and felt alone most of the time.
Even now, at 66 years old, I still feel isolated at times...which can be very frustrating.... since I just want others to enjoy my art as much as I love making it.
    Great reaction....
You need to listen to "Song of Myself" Below I have posted to words to the whole Song\Poem! It's brilliant!
    Song of Myself
    Nightwish
The nightingale is still locked in the cage
The deep breath I took still poisons my lungs
An old oak sheltering me from the blue
Sun bathing on its dead frozen leaves
A catnap in the ghost town of my heart
She dreams of storytime and the river ghosts
Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the Ride
    Raving harlequins, gigantic toys
A song of me a song in need
    Of a courageous symphony
A verse of me a verse in need
Of a pure-heart singing me to peace
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
All that great heart lying still
    In silent suffering
Smiling like a clown until the show has come to an end
    What is left for encore
Is the same old Dead Boy's song
    Sung in silence
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
A midnight flight into Covington Woods
A princess and a panther by my side
These are Territories I live for
I'd still give my everything to love you more
A song of me a song in need
    Of a courageous symphony
A verse of me a verse in need
Of a pure-heart singing me to peace
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
All that great heart lying still
    In silent suffering
Smiling like a clown until the show has come to an end
    What is left for encore
Is the same old Dead Boy's song
    Sung in silence
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
    A silent symphony
A hollow opus one, two, three
Sometimes the sky is piano black
    Piano black over cleansing waters
    Resting pipes, verse of bore
    Rusting keys without a door
Sometimes the within is piano black
    Piano black over cleansing waters
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
I see a slow, simple youngster by a busy street
With a begging bowl in his shaking hand
Trying to smile but hurting infinitely
    Nobody notices
    I do, but walk by
An old man gets naked and kisses a model-doll in his attic
    It's half-light and he's in tears
When he finally comes his eyes are cascading
I see a beaten dog in a pungent alley
    He tries to bite me
All pride has left his wild drooling eyes
I wish I had my leg to spare
    A mother visits her son,
Smiles to him through the bars
    She's never loved him more
An obese girl enters an elevator with me
    All dressed up fancy
A green butterfly on her neck
    Terribly sweet perfume deafens me
    She's going to dinner alone
That makes her even more beautiful
    I see a model's face on a brick wall
A statue of porcelain perfection beside a violent city kill
    A city that worships flesh
The first thing I ever heard
Was a wandering man telling his story
It was you, the grass under my bare feet
The campfire in the dead of the night
The heavenly black of sky and sea
    It was us
    Roaming the rainy roads
    Combing the gilded beaches
Waking up to a new gallery of wonders every morn
Bathing in places no-one's seen before
    Shipwrecked on some matt-painted island
Clad in nothing but the surf
    Beauty's finest robe
    Beyond all mortality we are
Swinging in the breath of nature
In early air of the dawn of life
A sight to silence the heavens
I want to travel where life travels
    Following its permanent lead
Where the air tastes like snow music
Where grass smells like fresh-born Eden
I would pass no man, no stranger, no tragedy or rapture
I would bathe in a world of sensation
    Love, Goodness, and Simplicity
(While violated and imprisoned by technology)
The thought of my family's graves was the only moment
I used to experience true love
    That love remains infinite
As I'll never be the man my father is
How can you "just be yourself"
When you don't know who you are?
Stop saying "I know how you feel"
How could anyone know how another feels?
Who am I to judge a priest, beggar, whore, politician, wrongdoer?
I am, you are, all of them already
Dear child, stop working, go play
    Forget every rule
There's no fear in a dream
"Is there a village inside this snowflake?"
    A child asked me
"What's the color of our lullaby?"
I've never been so close to truth as then
    I touched its silver lining
Death is the winner in any war
Nothing noble in dying for your religion
    For your country
    For ideology, for faith
    For another man, yes
    Paper is dead without words
    Ink idle without a poem
All the world dead without stories
    Without love and disarming beauty
    Careless realism costs souls
    Ever seen the Lord smile?
All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man?
Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks?
Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is
All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground
I see all those empty cradles and wonder
    If man will ever change
I, too, wish to be a decent manboy
    But all I am
    Is smoke and mirrors
Still given everything, may I be deserving
    And there forever remains
That change from G to E minor

There is so much genius in this work that it is difficult to know where to begin. Everything, from the stage set to the lyrics to the music itself has a purpose. Floor's heart-rendingly beautiful performance is beyond comparison - only she could deliver the emotional truth of this work. There is so much more here to understand.
Note the swans in the background - these are the swans of Tuonela, said in Finnish mythology to be the conveyors of souls to the afterlife. Note how the boy has his arms raised in the hope and the longing of embracing that journey, yet - there he remains. It's worth a listen to Sibelius' The Swan of Tuonela to see where part of Tuomas ' inspiration came from. Here's Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker: th-cam.com/video/HjyLWoJvtME/w-d-xo.html. Exquisite.
Emppu's ravishingly beautiful guitar solo is David Gilmour class in the way it conveys the sadness, the anguish of a soul who has been left behind in a lonely and forsaken world. It's a cry of anguish, reinforced by the funereal march of the music behind and complementing the solo. You'll hear that same sort of expression in David Gilmour's last solo of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. I always felt that towards the end, it became the funeral march of a lost and tormented soul. All of the anguish and regret of something glimpsed and lost is distilled and channeled into one extended searing cry. So it is with Emppu's solo, yet it is so deftly and effortlessly woven into this masterpiece of Tuomas' that you don't quite realize what it's doing to you. Note that there is none of Emppu's usual smirking or goofing around in this one. He is dead serious (excuse the pun) and it shows in his expression. So much so that he has to turn away from the audience when he is done.
And then there's Floor. This is the most emotional performance I have yet seen from her. She feels all of the passion, sorrow, despair, longing and even anger in every note of this epic piece. She becomes the song and then she sings right into your soul and utterly wrecks it. It hits so hard. If this doesn't have tears streaming down your face, then you have no understanding and no soul.
