Gorden Tallis SENT OFF! Origin 2000 - Game 1.

  • With 10 minutes remaining in the match and Queensland 16-12 in front, New South Wales knock the ball on twice 16 metres out from their line, and Referee Bill Harrigan dumbfoundingly calls play on. The Blues then score that set to tie the scores at 16-16. Gorden Tallis challenges the referee, and legend has it Tallis called Harrigan "a cheat". This is true, however it has recently come to light that Tallis also told Harrigan that Steve Clark (another NRL referee) was "a better referee" than him, and that Clark should be officiating Origin 2. This allegedly got under Harrigan's skin more than the "cheat" comment, hence the sending off (Tallis' version of this story can be viewed in the foxsports link below). New South Wales went on to win the match 20-16, thanks to a late try to debutant fullback, David Peachey. New South Wales famously went on to win the 2000 series in a clean-sweep.
Interesting footnote: Gorden Tallis has since stated that the cameraman who he told to "f#ck off" was 'Joe the Cameraman' of the Shane Warne/Scott Muller "Can't bowl, can't throw" cricket broadcast controversy.

You don't see players abusing ref's much these days, especially with the addition of captain calls. Anytime a player gets upset about a call the ref just asks them if they want it reviewed, and 9/10 times they shut up because they know the call was correct.

Its easy to understand why Gordon was so angry with Harrigan for missing 2 blatant knock-ons that led to a pivotal Blues try. At that point Gordon and his team had fought tooth and nail to be leading 16-12 with 7 mins remaining on the clock. Gordon knew that the try would probably cost them a win and had to say something to Harrigan. He could have chosen better words but they were said in the heat of the moment. The fact is that Harrigan was WRONG and wasn't very professional in his actions. When pressed by Adrian Lamb and Gordan about the knock-ons, Harrigan was visibly upset about his mistakes and wouldn't comment. He let his emotions take over when Gordon said that Steven Clarke was a "better referee" and sent Gordon for 10 mins then changed that to a send off. Harrigan could have handled the situation a lot better by reporting the incident to the NRL officials after the game. The fact is, players at Origin level are playing for bigger stakes and it's not like they're playing down the park with their mates.
Many have suggested that Harrigan had an ego the size of Sydney Harbour and in many ways that was a far more dangerous thing. When Harrigan first came on the scene, he was raised up to represent the 'new age' of refereeing. He copped heaps of flack after Saints' loss in the 1999 grand final. The match saw countless bad ref calls go against the Dragons in the final 20 minutes. In 2000, he copped plenty of criticism after the State of Origin & he displayed egotistical contempt for his critics in his media responses. In 2002, history repeated itself when Harrigan blundered his way through the State of Origin and once again, he was the main headline coming into the decider. That same year, in a Parramatta game, Harrigan sin binned Buettner (56th min), Hindmarsh (58th min) and Dykes (64th min) effectively forcing Parramatta to play the game with ten men. He then sin binned Buettner again in the 75th minute for dissent bringing the final tally to four.
It was evident that it was by enforcing this rule, Harrigan became the main news item and the match itself became irrelevant. Harrigan had an annoying habit of pulling up plays and sending off players depending on his mood. This wouldn't be so bad in itself, but in Harrigan's case, he had a history of getting obsessive about certain activities to the point where he made it a personal quest. It was also well known that he had Gordon in his sights as well. But, in the end many people were sick to death of watching a referee shove the game aside and take centre stage. But as we all know, a good referee is the one who isn't noticed by the audience. Is there still some of us out there who subscribe to the view that referees should not be seen or heard throughout the match?

No, Harrigan was going to let Tallis off easy. Instead Tallis refused to go and coped it worse

Nope. He was the best. Only one with enough backbone to make the big calls.
Everyone makes mistakes, but sending a player off who abuses/calls him a cheat is 100% the right decision (and one most refs today wouldn’t make).
Even Tallis later said this was the right call.

@@StrongerAths No he was the worst. What you call backbone is actually ego, at the expense of the game, and what you call big calls are actually wrong calls. Maybe everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone makes as many mistakes and as big of mistakes as what Harrigan made.

So called best referee in the world misses 2 knock ons in a row and cannot be clear whether it’s 10 in the bin or a send off?

He initially gave Tallis 10 in the bin and then Tallis just kept going. It was initially a sin bin and then Tallis made it worse.
