Who’s ready for a BMW 2 Series showdown?!
Mat’s in the last generation full-fat BMW M2, and he’s going head-to-head with the new M2 ‘lite’, the M240i!
So let’s see how these two BMW coupes compare. Starting with the M2, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can deliver 410hp & 550Nm of torque. Its power is delivered to the rear wheels only, and it weighs in at 1,575kg.
As for the M240i, well it also comes equipped with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six, although the power output is a bit less, at 374hp and 500Nm. It’s also a bit heavier, tipping the scales at 1,690kg, but it’s got one key advantage - it’s equipped with all-wheel drive!
They both roll-up with launch control, but will four-wheel drive prove the difference?! There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

It’ll be 4WD and auto. If you want to go fast, just buy a motorbike or single seater, every road car will seem slow then. What road cars are about is enjoyment, so I'd take a rear drive manual M2C over any new M2 with a slush box and 4WD any day.

The fact that a small (relatively speaking) 2 door coupe weighs nearly 1700kgs these days is pretty crazy, 4wd probably adds quite a few Kgs I guess

You do realize that the overall look of the new car is almost identical to the old one? When you look at them side by side, you can really see that there are just minor changes to the shape of the lights and some other things.

My dads 7 seater weight less than that (arround 1600kg)
1690kg is insanely heavy. My old 2006 Audi A6 C6 with the 4.2 V8 and quattro weighed only 90kg's more. Let that sink in 😂

I have a 2016 M2...great as it is...it's no match for the my S1 Exige,with a supercharged Honda vtec.(It's silly to compare them really)Lightness is quicker everywhere!
I am totally spoilt.For a quick blast,nothing much can beat my Lotus,for long runs the M2 is great!
When I drive my wife's Mazda 2 it brings me back down to earth!

Carwow should do hot laps for each car dragged on a basic track somewhere (a bit like the old top gear). Would be great to have the extra comparison on top of flat out drag results.
The M240i is seriously impressive for an M light, M2 is prettier though and M cars really should be RWD with the ability to put you through a hedge backwards 😁

I knew the M2 Comp is going to lose off the line, but I still love my M2 Comp. Still the perfect car for me.
Who cares for off the line. I barely use launch control or race from a dig.
If you owned one like me you won’t say it’s perfect. It’s sparsely equipped and bumpy as hell, on the streets the speed is only ok, nothing to write home about
I sold it 3 months in, didn’t lose any money tho. Which is the only good thing

I admit that it is a bit harsh on public road, but when you go hard on mountain twists or race track, especially when going a lot of sideways, every bit is worth it. Exactly what I need. The only possible thing that make me trade it would be the next M2, if it looks as good.

The new m440i? Remember the M4 has a lot more power than the M2 and I mean both the F82 and G82. So the difference on a roll is a lot more. The M240i is also faster than the M440i. If you are talking old gen 440i ots an even bigger difference.

Watching these modern cars makes me realise how beautiful pre gens are.. I currently own a 2017 M4 competition and I can say that there isn’t a single modern car (within budget) that I’ll have over my car!

I've always said it…. if you have an M240i (or as in my case an M440i coupe) you don't need an M2 or M4.
I think that new 240i looks really good, great side profile, mean and futuristic looking big thumbs up from me

The old M2 is so well-proportioned and instantly recognisable as a BMW compared to the latest gen M240i. Hope the new M2 can bring some much welcomed changes to this new design.

That m240i rear looks absolutely horrible. What is going on with BMW's design team they have been missing a lot lately. The last good looking car was the M5 CS. Mercedes and Audi definitely gonna use this to their advantage

Audi is in different universe in terms of design. In my opinion nothing comes close to Audi now. VW concern has nice design overal.
I honestly think the new 2 series M is way too powerful. However, great value for the car if you're interested in buying it, The fact it can beat a full fledged M2 in a 1/4 Mile by .3 seconds is crazy to think

We all know BMW has lost its signature design... but man. Looking at the previous m2 competition, it just looks like a masterpiece.. so mean, so elegant and so sexy.
The new 2 series looks fat and has no character at all. It doesn't even have any distinctive feature that will set it aside on the road.
Don't get me wrong, i actually like the new 2 series' design as compared to the newly revealed and ugly 7 series. Even the new 3 and 4 series are still to grow on me.
It's sad considering how BMW is considered to be the pinnacle of german engineering, yet, their design language has gone all the way down.
Just hope the future won't be as disastrous as it is right now.

I've got an M140i (5-door hatch). Couldn't be happier with it. I actually test drove the M2 and the M140i/M240i just feel a bit quicker for street use. And they're much more practical and cheaper. Since I've had other M cars like an E92 M3 and an F10 M5, I didn't feel the pinch of missing out on the M2. My M140i is now chipped and much faster than it was stock.
Actually I've also had an M135i before (the first generation, with the RWD and the N55). Also an awesome car. Love these "almost-M" hatches. You need a racetrack to really feel the advantage of a full M (but on a racetrack, the difference will be huge).
The M240i has less bhp.
The only reason I'd want an M2 over my M235i for street use is for the looks, and that's not enough to warrant the extra costs. Performance doesn't really matter as 99% of the time I'm stuck behind some tit in a Vauxhall Mokka driving everywhere at 40mph anyway

Depends what size car and how many doors you want doesn't it. It will definitely move people away from the more expensive models though.
M5 xdrive is the same drive train as the m8 xdrive. They're about 0.5 sec quicker than the m3. How is it pointless...🙄🙄

Daily driver M240 holds its own against a pure performance/track car M2. technically it's not apples to apples but i'll take the smoother ride. look forward to new M2 and how it performs later this year.

I'd take the m240i. Launches better, stops better, cheaper. It's also got the 4 wheel drive so will be better in slippy, rainy old England. Only time you'd benefit with the full fat M2 are at autobahn speeds.

12.2 seconds quarter mile in a small coupe is smoking. We have come so far. You know a Lamborghini Diablo SV runs those kind of times. Imagine that. A 30 year old worshipped supercar and now you can do those times with a baby BMW that isn't even a full M car. You can do it all day too, you can bet the Lamborghini will do it a few times and break. Absurdly quick. A Ferrari F40 does around 11.8 second, I bet an M240i with a bit of ECU tweaking would manage it.

What about a fastest diesel’s drag race.
The only way the M2 gets the better of the m240i is when your up to crazy speeds, add cold or wet weather to that the M2 is nullified, 400hp that can't be used. The 370hp in the m240i is far more usable in ALL weather conditions.

Personally I'd have multiple different cars. If budget wasn't an issue I'd defo want a Porsche gt4 and maybe a taycan cross tourismo. But I'd also be happy with a gr86 or hyundai i30n
One of the big appeals of this channel is seeing how cars would do on "the street" and not a prepped drag strip. Heating the tires, does detract from that a little bit, though of course it looks quite fun. 😁😁
In theory if the cars were driving on the street before say, coming to a traffic light, the tires would be slightly warmer than they start with before heating the tires.
Street or track, you should always do a small burnout to warm up tires. Doesn’t need to be donuts. Just up and down burnouts is enough.

I don't get the hate new M240i gets. Yes, it does look weird from the front, but I actually prefer the rear end of the new car. Old one looks...old, ugly and disproportionate. So that's a "tie" for me. However, the profile! The new one looks so slick, so elegant, so smooth. How can anyone compare it to the old one, which looks like someone took a car and cut the rear half of it, then just put there whatever junk he could find to close the hole he made. Basicly from the side it look like an old 3 series compact. Which looks horrible.
Overall, new M240i could look better, namely from the front, but is still way cooler than the old one.
It's mostly people who won't buy either one who have those strong Internet opinions. Besides, Thundernight Metallic is only available on the new one. ;)
