    Just a small clarification on the front USB ports that I mention at around the 13:10 mark - there are indeed internal headers, but they're not for *extra* ports - they're connected to the existing ports just in case you wanted to re-route them somewhere else (ie for mounting the MMS in a different case). The MultiSystem supports 7 USB ports in total. The small switch that I neglect to mention at around 13:23 is the voltage selector for the accessory connector - it's switchable between 3.3V and 5V.

    the MiSTer is a retro gaming dream, I went all out and got a CRT as well, very happy. I was going to get an Amiga 1200 but as older hardware gets more expensive the MiSTer was a great solution as it does all the 70s 80s 90s 8 and 16bit games. The Neo Geo core is amazing, the whole thing is worth it just for Turf Masters lol. Great video, you deserve more subs for your content.

    I'm glad these exist, and I hope they sell enough to eventually justify molded cases. If you want it to look like a console, it would be ideal. I'm no fan of 3D printed anything because of the rough finish. I'll be sticking to my MiSTer Addons aluminum cases until a better aluminum case comes out. I love the looks of the aluminum cases and appreciate the much smaller footprint. I hope there will be many more case options for the MiSTer. I'm hoping someone will make a CNC anodized aluminum case for sale. I'd buy a couple for sure.

    That FPGA explanation was really nice, kudos for the "almost there" painting, perfect analogy. :) I really love the FPGA system, only thing I find less is the 3D printing quality (seen quite a few with layer issues, like can be seen in Linus' video). But very happy you can print it yourself.

    • @Xalior
      @Xalior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're not issues - that's how internal long spans looks - it's an intentional production decision, not a mistake.
      They're done as a tradeoff between "cosmetics you will never see" and wasting a **lot** of plastic and time printing supports that need removing afterwards.

      @@Xalior Totally get that, but on the video from Linus, I was seeing layers simply popping up, delaminating. I don't think that should be happening even in production.

    • @Xalior

    The board and case are very nice, and had they been available I would have gotten them in a heartbeat. As it is I built my own case. For me, having a case makes a HUGE difference and is very well worth it! I feel like the scanlines really bring out extra definition in the GBA core. If you load up Minish Cap for example, look at the sides of the item menu with and without scanlines. You will see definition that you never saw before with the scanlines on. Odd that a system that never used a CRT screen looks so much better on one, or at least with the scanline filter.

    Why did they not include two NAC ports? What if I want to play with friends. This is an entertainment system. Also the finish is so inconsistent on various sides and corners. $375 with shipping is a bit steep for this quality.

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding is that the original concept accounted for 2 SNAC ports but no cores actually support this setup due to lack of available I/O on the DE-10 itself so the second port was dropped in favour of a more useful expansion connector. Personally I'm very happy with the case but it is optional for those who don't want it.

  • @NdxtremePro
    @NdxtremePro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    FPGA isn't actaully emulation. It is literally hardware gates. It is more akin to Amd's x86 CPUs, which are intel compatible. These are clones.
    Emulators translate code into a different system, while FPGAs literally become that system.

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are technically correct of course - although I think it's important to note that not all cores are developed in this way. Some are indeed 1:1 copies of the original hardware, but there are still a few that were developed by reverse engineering other emulators as the original hardware isn't documented to that level.
      Either way, I appreciate that some in the MiSTer community feel very strongly about the word "emulation", but that doesn't change the dictionary definition. Recreating one system on another - even at a hardware level - is emulation. It's not the dirty word that you think it is. 🤷‍♂️

    • @NdxtremePro
      @NdxtremePro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ctrlaltrees I'm not in the Mister community, and I don't think emulation is a dirty word. I think not using the correct word is sloppy, and leads to misunderstandings between people, and this is especially true of technical subjects were the differences matter.
      For instance, because Mister is hardware, someone could try and make an Amiga clone that is compatible but better than the original.
      In fact, the "ao486" on Mister is exactly this.
      This can lead to actual products, such as the Vampire for the Amiga systems, that are actually working to forward the original platform.
      Naming it emulation actually limits people's understanding of it, and might influence someone that could have created something great from even knowing they can.
      Correct word usage is important to convey ideas and options.

  • @Real_The_Goof
    @Real_The_Goof 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    No.. it doesn't emulate..
    Emulation is software.
    The Mister does things by literally being reconfigured to duplicate hardware.
    it's hardware that pretends to be different hardware.
    Emulation is software based.
    An emulator is software that acts like hardware in order to run software that specific hardware was not made to run it.
    Like modern PCs.
    An FPGA is not emulation, it's literally hardware configured to be different hardware, rather than software running to run software.
    In fact, FPGAs are so capable of being so accurate because IT'S NOT EMULATION!
    In fact, analogue consoles have a slogan about how there's no emulation.
    Purely hardware that's told to pretend to be another piece of hardware.
    In fact, it's right there "software emulation of complete systems" SOFTWARE
    FPGA cores are not doing the work, they're telling the hardware HOW to do the work.

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "it's hardware that pretends to be different hardware."
      Yes, this is literally the dictionary definition of emulation. Sorry if that word somehow has negative connotations to you and you feel that that devalues the MiSTer in some way, but it is what it is. I do try my hardest to make the distinction between hardware and software emulation in the video. 🤷‍♂️
      "In fact, analogue consoles have a slogan about how there's no emulation."
      ...and they've gotten a lot of flak for this, including from FPGA devs themselves.

    • @leeboy2k1
      @leeboy2k1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ctrlaltrees Exactly, it's semantics, if it is not physically the same in it's material composition, then it is emulating what it isn't physically.

    Seriously? A 3D print farm to batch out enclosures? Have they done the math? Those cases look ratty and probably cost way more than a proper plastic mold run when you factor the cost pf the printers and plastic. Injection molding is just one molding technology. Those cases could also be thermoformed which is even more cost effective.

    • @RMCRetro
      @RMCRetro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We did the math 😁 Maybe one day injection moulding will be an option but this is an interesting journey we're on and figuring out as we go. • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn't agree that it looks "ratty" at all, I'm very happy with it. That's not to say that an even higher quality option wouldn't be appreciated, of course. I can't speak for Heber but they're a manufacturing company with over 30 years of experience, and I work in an adjacent industry, so I do trust that they're capable of "doing the math".

    • @Xalior
      @Xalior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having been involved in projects that have had multiple custom injection moulded parts made I can tell you something about the maths.
      Working on the principle that Rich built the Prusa Mk3s himself (very likely!) you could get 10 printers from Prusa direct for the less than cost for ONE of the 4 major parts of the case - hell, the steel alone would be almost as much as the printers! This doesn't count the extra cost for the power button, second top, different backplanes, or Rich's time to redesign the case to make it injection mould friendly...
