    He's probably the most well informed hobbyist I've ever heard talk of their collection. Another thing, he has impeccable taste. My heaven's, what a collection! Stunning!

    • @kfmathew
      @kfmathew 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of the above, and he keeps saying Vooltain for Voutilainen, or did I hear him wrong? In any case, I would much rather be able to own all those stunners and get one of their names wrong, like him, than be able to get one name right and not be able to afford ANY watch, like me! 😅

      All of the above, and he keeps saying Vooltain for Voutilainen... or did I hear him wrong? That being said, however, I'd much rather be able to buy all those stunners he has and get one name wrong, like him, than be able to say it right and be unable to afford even one watch, like me! 😅

    I think it a flaw in this otherwise interesting video that so much "screen time" was given to the "talking heads", and comparatively little to the extraordinary watches, themselves.

    What an amazing collection of haute horologie! Truly unique collection from a well-spoken and passionate gentleman that is an embodiment of what a collector should be! I cannot be the only one that was keeping a running total of how much this collection cost but gave up after it reached well into the 6 figure range! Impressive and hats off to you sir!

    The preview image for this video aged SOOOO WELL. It's 4 years later and Voutilainen is easily the top guilloche man in the world. Journe is basically a household name amongst every grade of enthusiast. And Lange is often spoken of as direct competition to the holy trinity and in particular Patek.

    Every time I watch one of these I get very frustrated because either you never see the watch as well or they hold them up for about 20 seconds and you’re lucky if you’re gonna actually see the dial and or the movement. What I can’t figure out is why, you don’t take images film images of the Watches front and back either before or after the conversation and then edit them in so that they’re a quarter of the screen or something like that while they’re talking about each watch come on guys get it together

    Of these watches, the F.P. Journe T30 is my favorite. Among the many qualities these horological masterpieces share, one of these qualities is, "abundance," Whether it be an abundant amount of complications or details, every watch here is a world infinite wonder. What none of these watches express, however, is "emptiness."
    Art history is full of paintings with abundance, be it Hieronymus Bosch's, The Garden of Earthly Delights, Michelangelo's, Sistine Chapel, or Peter Paul Reubens', The Decent from the Cross. In art history, paintings that express emptiness are relegated to second fiddle. Take, for example, Chardin's, Basket of Plums or Juan Sanchez Cotan's, Still Life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber.
    It wasn't until the 20th century that emptiness became a force to be reckoned with. Take, for example, Mark Rothko's, Black on Dark Sienna on Purple. Emptiness as a black hole, where no light can escape. Abundance in art will always take center stage but thanks to Rothko's forbearers the art world is full of emptiness.
    This brings me back to watches. Most every masterpiece of horology is a Hieronymous Bosch. There are few watches that are inspired by the likes of Chardin or Rothko, but they exist. Of course, we have to go to Japan to find them.
    First, there is the Credor Eichi II, with its dial entirely painted in enamel. It's a breath of God as quiet as a whisper. Then there's Kikuchi Nakagawa's, Murakumo watch. Inspired by Patek Philippe's 1941 black dial Reference No.1503, Nakagawa refines the Murakumo into a kind of purity so severe that even the black polished caseback makes seasoned watch collectors twitch with nervous anxiety. No wonder. Like staring into a black hole, there's nothing there.

      Many Americans, even very well-educated ones, have difficulty pronouncing "foreign sounding" words/ names ( i.e. not usually encountered in English-speaking countries). But yes, I agree, if only as a matter of common courtesy. If they've built up a genuine client/ creator relationship based on mutual respect, appreciation and shared passion for the art of watchmaking, you'd think he'd have learned to pronounce the watchmaker's name correctly.

    These things would be much more helpful if you took pictures of all the watches and flash them on the screen as the person is discussing them, you know down in the corner on one side, etc. etc. it’s frustrating to me because I’m trying to learn more about WATCHES as much as I can actually and they’re sitting here talking about something we can’t even see it.
