They were the primary force that pointed the direction of Rock for the next several decades. After this point, their recordings were years ahead of their time, the musicianship was unmatched, and will last and be revered for generations (get it?) Also, they had a wonderful SENSE OF HUMOR! Why is that so hard?
The Who with Cannonball Adderly! That's an amazing combination. There was that brief period in the mid sixties to early seventies when the walls between types of music (rock, blues, R&B, jazz, folk, Latin, etc.) were broken down. By the mid-seventies the walls had been put back up again.

He was sitting on a blanket with a beautiful English girl who I believe he did marry. I must read your book !! Oh, one more concert: The famous Singer Bowl concert 0f 1968 when Jim Morrison started a riot with the police. Fortunately we were not too near the bedlam. How could I forget that concert !?
I just interviewed Phil Jones, of Crabby Appleton (famous for the hit "Go Back") He said he might have been at this show. He said he saw the Nice with the original guitarist and the who, so it must have been this show. So thank you for sharing. Do you have any recordings of the nice from this show? I have also interviewed Dale Powers of the Ohio Express (famous for hits Yummy Yummy Yummy, Chewy Chewy, Beg Borrow and Steal) He played a show with the who in Canada at a pop festival on July 16, 1968. He even had dinner with the who! He even told me how each member acted. He said that Moon asked the Ohio Express drummer if he wanted some peanuts, he said yes and Moon dumped the entire bag on his head! Dale told me that after the who, the audience started to destroy the stage! Let me know if you're interested in the full story.

I love Daltrey's gritty voice, pure rock and roll. I never liked the high-pitched screamers...Pete had a high voice but it was pleasant, and John sounded great before he damaged his chords....
I'm really curious about Pete's rig in this photo. In Feb 1968 he would have been using the Sound City amps in the US for the first time, but there is no name plate on the amps (although the face plate matches up otherwise), which I have seen on all the Sound City heads. Also, is Pete using an ES-335 here? He was still a few months away from getting the SG Special at Manny's. At any rate, you can hear him on the cusp of his truly great tone.

Is there any possibility of uploading "Don't Look Away" from this show as well? Its pretty amazing that this show had three songs that no live recordings have been known to exist for until now. One of my personal "Holy grails" is to find a live recording of "Rael". I believe its known to have been performed at least twice.
wow! those vocals are suprisingly clear. what a strange mix of tunes they played in this era. it would be so cool if someone with technology knowledge would be able to somehow isolate those instruments and remix some of these 68-era songs into better quality. surely someone could figure out how to take these raw materials and make them slightly more listenable. look at what they can do with old bootleg film footage.

I'm convinced Keith was an alien dropped off in Wembley in 1946 and told to transform percussion as we know it. He was beamed up in '78. Job done.

My favorite Who era is 1966-1968. They were crazier, desperate, and had to work with more limited material. So they jammed and did more covers.

The Who s setlist show from 1975 until today, is basically 75% the same songs. So this Is a true surprise.

It's sad and pathetic that 1968 was the peak year of The Who live in terms of setlist variety.
You can make a case for 1971, too. Of course, the variety came in the form of new songs (some quickly dropped).

Pete claimed they played Rael twice only in Glasgow and Manchester UK.

Peter Jackson used something to that effect on the Beatles: Get Back series to clear up some audio issues. So it's possible.
