This is a fantastic find, and THANK YOU so much for sharing it. This was Cream at the peak of their enormous powers. It just doesn't get any better than this, and this---like Wheels of Fire---sends shivers down my spine. To this very day, more than a half-century later. They didn't play. They flat roared.
This is a cracking audience recording for the time and an amazing performance. Well done to the original tapers and for all the detective work in unearthing and sharing .
Anyone who says Jack Bruce is not rock music's greatest bassist just needs to listen "N.S.U" here. There is also a furious version of "I'm So Glad" on their MSG shows in November 1968, where all of them just shine.
Is there any way you could post these awesome tapes somewhere in flac quality? these amazing tapes deserve to be heard and preserved in the best quality for future generations
I want to thank all the Beautiful Creamers who responded to my comments below. I stand corrected. This recording is a one off--it is absolutely unique. Especial thanks to @kevin6548 for his most civil response which prompted me to listen again with a more open mind. Cheers.
great book. what a time. i was just today reading about this recording. and who recorded it. its so unbelievable that several storytellers in your book sat on stage10 feet from clapton. And thats how it was throughout their usa tour, sitting feet from cream as they played clubs.
Collect em all !!Didnt Cream play 12 days in a 2 week period in San Fran. in Feb./Mar 68? Listening to a "NEW" "Spoonful" right now....OMG this one should have been on "Wheels" !!!!!!! Don't know what to say except for you are one cool Pisano & keep em comin' !!!! Ciao....
Wow. This is amazing. "Sunshine" is in great form here…right between the more regimented studio/early live versions and the thrashing proto-Heavy Metal versions at RAH for example.
I saw Cream the Spring of 1968. Actually, I had not seen any rock band so I didn't have a frame of reference. Bruce and Clapton had two Marshall stacks and Ginger Baker literally had his drums nailed to the stage. Bands back then didn't have much of front end for sound so the mics were pretty much for the. vocals and probably for the drums. Tales of Brave Ulysses was memorable as Clapton was using a wah wah and through the Marshalls it was out of this world. I guess you had to be there.
Is this the bootleg where Eric says this one's dedicated to Jack's wife Janet, before doing 'Sweet Wine '.I still have it,it cost me a fiver in 68/9.They do 'Stepping Out' as well.
@@edoardogenzoliniauthor7802 ok thanks,I bought it in the UK at a gig(not Cream). It does sound like a small club. With the technology nowadays it could be cleaned up I guess. Thanks again.
Thanks Edoardo. I can see that the tapes were a Shamrock 051 and Scotch 203. Out of curiosity, what speed were the March 3 & March 10 recorded at? That is assuming that they were mastered on these tapes as opposed to these tapes being safety copies.
Incredible. I wonder if they had some extra Owsley that night. Erics phrasing is IMO so different from the recordings in England. Thanks 🙏 ❤. What- a band.
Jerry Garcia and Micky Hart went to see this show. M.H.: [On the way out] That's the best band in the world! ...Is that the best band in world? J.G.: ...Tonight, that was the best band in the world.
What is the point of this sort of shitty recording ? I think it dishonors the band and the producers, engineers, etc. who collaborated to make high quality recordings. This is not a rhetorical question. I really want to know what the point is ?
Shut your trap. This audience recording isn't half bad and it's a real joy to listen to if you put on those headphones and just groove. It doesn't do any dishonor. If anything, it magnifies further just how great a jam band Cream was!
Because it shows MASTERS at work and some of us appreciate it no matter what the quality. If you shut out all the things that were recorded to perfection, you lose all that brought them to that point. And often, that is better than what was played in the studio.
There are a lot of recordings of Charlie Parker in circulation that sound far worse, but with certain artists, their big fans want to hear ***anything*** they haven't heard before. If the recording quality bothers you, no one is forcing you to listen to it. I'm listening to Cream improvise on NSU right now, and it's a revelation!
it's like any rare finds ie. early zz top bootlegs - you're listening for the musicianship/tone from the gear; and have to set aside the recording itself. if this thing was pro recorded [like if most of cream's shows] it would kill. also, this is a pre-FB [4/68] tape so it's the Fool LP/SG.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? HOW GREAT CAN THIS WEEK GET???? THANK YOU THANK YOU
🤘🏻🙌🏻
Here Mate 🔊
Here's a SPOONFUL

A monster version of Spoonful !! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🔥

Ditto to all you have said!!!! And you have a great way with words!!!
Holy shit after hearing the fillmore bootlegs thru a potato for years / decades this brings me pure joy
Makes me like the early version of politician more its a much more evil vibe. Some ppl find random lead fills to be kind of annoying out of place
Wow! Great sounding and an unheard March 68 Spoonful on top of it!
Edoardo, you’ve shared another treasure. Thank you 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻.

I love Jack Bruce, but James Jameson was the governor….Jack would agree…🏴🏴🏴

. I've heard many boots over the years but this is great! Thank you.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Magic. Thank you so much.
Been a long time. My brother bought all the Cream albums - we wore holes in them. Very psychedelic we were in those days ☮
Cream RAW - Clapton at his best. Thanks Eduardo!
Super find! made my year!
A million thanks
Further proof of just how great the 60s were. What an incredible listen!

It was actually 8 shows over 2 weeks, with two sets per night. I was there on 2/29/68.
cheers paesano!
@@JohnDarsey51 I was living in North Beach on 2/29/68 the day you saw CREAM,lucky man!!I I was only 9 at the time , darn!
Did you mean like "Disraeli Wheels'' or "Gears"?
Abe Union pride can't get enough of cream 55 year's what can be said great to hear it long live Clapton Bruce Baker
Wow! I saw them in LA on this tour

Holy Shit! Fantastic find The more Cream the better 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Jack Bruce’s bass and vocals unique.
Jack Bruces was outstanding! However, I saw them live and for me Clapton and Baker were a cliche bore.
Wonderful uk 🇬🇧 ❤️ '23
Amazing Performance! Doumoarigatou From Japan❤
Clapton absolutely rages through Spoonful 🎸 💀

Do you have a link to it?
I concur, have you uploaded it anywhere?
Didn’t Jack and Janet separate because of Ginger?

That's correct. They had come from their famous salute concert to the Haight on their flatbed truck. It was Sunday March 3.
received the book yesterday. It's a shame that Atlantic housed all their masters so carelessly. Thankfully we have these recordings.
I fully expect to see dramatically upgraded audio of this and other shows coming out soon now that AI technology is available.
Drums are murky . Everything else sounds great !
16:00 - 16:30 the increase in intensity and tempo on the nsu jam
17:29 - 17:48 jack vocals
They were so into it that night. Listen also to Jack's vocals in "Ulysses."
Clapton was never the same after heroin. Sad.
If he hadn't stopped using heroin, he would be dead now.
Something happened to the fingers and brain and he had to change his style of music to basic everyday type music.
Compared to Wheels Of Fire live, this sounds awful. Do you think the band would have actually ever released this? I doubt it.
What is the point of this sort of shitty recording ? I think it dishonors the band and the producers, engineers, etc. who collaborated to make high quality recordings. This is not a rhetorical question. I really want to know what the point is ?
Only us fans are appreciative to listen 🫵
