If you take into account the estimated time that Vegapunk gave for Kuma's and Bonney's modifications and surgeries and time to recovery, plus when Bonney set sail, it would be 5 or 6 months at best. It was probably September in the One Piece world when Vegapunk gave the estimation, then 6 months passed for Bonney's surgery, so it would be March. Another year for her until she could be under the sun. 6 months passed and now it's September 1st which is Bonney's birthday. Another 6 months pass and now it's March which is when Vegapunk said she can go out. She sets sail 2 months before Luffy did when he turned 17 on May 5. 4 years ago, when it was probably September, Vegapunk said that Kuma's modifications would take at least 2 years. If you take all that into account, the Pre-Timeskip probably took 5 to 6 months.

The way I always understood Rayleigh's title was that he was the "Dark Horse" of the Roger pirates. That because of his bounty Roger was the one everyone thought was the one to watch out for, but that Rayleigh was Roger's equal, two different sides of the same coin. The only difference was Roger had a dream, and Rayleigh supported his dream. However, as I'm writing this. What if Rayleigh got the title as he was the one that filled the vacuum Roger left after his execution? This is a bit out there, but maybe?
Isn't it said in the story that Rayleigh just went into hiding/retirement? I thought the Roger Pirates slipped away into the shadows, while Roger was the only one that let himself get caught.

Speaking of the Cross Guild, the marines actually went after Mihawk, so do they think that Mihawk is weaker than an 80 years old Rayleigh? Honestly, Mihawk might not even have joined the Cross Guild if the marines didn't go after him. He was just kind of relaxing on his island.

Mihawk on the other hand is a threat to their governance as a whole that everybody and their mother knows about, and was televised just 2 years ago as someone fighting for the world government. If they let him off the hook and don't try and chase him down, it comes off as an endorsement of an active pirate who made his name hunting Marines. Mihawk has also probably grown stronger since he got the title of warlord,
Really love Rayleigh. During his prime pirate days I got him in the top 5 of that era. Essentially why I never liked the Oden narrative of fans believing they were on the same level. Oda to me clearly has displayed Rayleigh as more of a pivotal figure both pirate wise and strength wise .

I think it’s definitely just that Roger was the the pirate king and Rayleigh being the man behind him, his right hand maybe didn’t get as much of the attention compared to Roger and so he was in the shadows relatively but he was still a monster to go up against

On armament haki: I am reminded of the game Overlord. In the game you can sacrifice your minions to upgrade your weapons & armor (there are 4 colors: brown, red, green & blue), with each color boosting a different stat. If you ONLY sacrifice brown ones to your armor, you become near-indestructible (as the brown minions upgrade your armor's Defense stat); likewise, they also create the strongest weapons, as they boost a weapon's raw Damage stat. (Back to video: I'm certain that, while the haki is part of it, Rayleigh's title of Dark King comes from him being the 2nd in command to Roger while also being a terrifying badass himself.
I always figured he just picked the swords up and or stole them as he was going somewhere. Not like there is a shortage of swords in the world and who could stop him. He would is also like many high level characters where he enjoys toying with his opponents, like blocking Marco with a finger. He is basically running a randomizer challenge.

I think Katakuri mentioned "Color of Arms" it felt like it implied there were levels to armament haki. And his were a blue tint as luffy's was plain black
Personally I always liked to believe he is named "the dark King" because as the second in comand he stands in Rogers shadow, BUT he very well could be the head of any high class organisation because of his insane strenght. As well as the fact that Roger seems a lot like Luffy, making decisions out of the blue while Rayleigh is more calculated pulling the strings in Rogers shadow, making him the Dark King.

Great video. In my opinion I think the reason why Rayleigh got his title the dark king is because Gol D. Roger is the king of light maybe and since Rayleigh is the right hand man for Gol. D. Roger he has a opposite title. My opinion of the various connections between Zoro and Reyleigh I think Zoro is the younger version of Rayleigh just passing generations.

19:20 I prefer to go the same way as the Ancient Weapons for this. We have Unraus, Poseidon and Pluton. We assume Uranus is -what was used to wipe Lulusia- [What's a Lulusia? that place never existed] a flying weapon, because Uranus was a Sky God. Then you have Poseidon, a mermaid princess under the water, as Poseidon is the god of the Sea. Finally Pluton. The weapon is a ship, so sea again, but it travels at surface level, and it's the one that can interact with land. It's a seafaring vessel because if it was circumscript to land it couldn't leave the island where it was created, but it represents the underworld, Pluto (not to mix with the other Roman God Pluto, god of riches and abundance), Hades. If we want to assign them elements, Uranus would be air, Poseidon would be water, and Pluton would be earth. Now let's think of the Strawhats. Let's take Luffy away from the equation for a minute, who are the heavy hitters in the crew. Zoro, Sanji and Jinbe. Zoro, son of Terra, that means Earth. Sanji, son of Sora, that means Sky. Jinbe, known as "First Son of the Sea". Zoro is Pluton, or Hades, Sanji is Uranus, Jinbe is Poseidon, while Luffy is the Sun
I liken hardening as like the base stat of armament. You use it first, then you can add the other types of armament to add different effects, but hardening is like the base stat. You can be strong enough to punch apart amountain with just hardening, but its just easier if you can use ryuo to break through the natural resilience of the mountain and destroy it from the inside. You wouldn't need to have as high a level of basic hardening.
Maybe Rayleigh hits and cuts stuff so hard that the light just up and gets blown away, creating darkness? Maybe the light stops touching him? Or his Haki is so strong that everything he uses changes into a high grade Black Blade very soon after he gets to using it?
I had a thought relating to the idea of “Dark King” and “Ruler of Hell” being related to the shadow of their captain. This could be similar to how Zoro acted on Whiskey Peak and Luffy acted on Sky Island. Luffy is constantly out in the light fighting the big bosses and literal Gods, but Zoro fights in the dark and deals with the sneakier and ‘weaker’ opponents. I assume Roger would have been very similar to Luffy in this manner, but we don’t know for sure. I don’t know how credible this could be, but it feels like a common trend with the Straw Hats to have Luffy fight the big battle that gets the news stories while Zoro cuts down enemies and gets regarded as a sort of rumor because of the mystery.

So another thing about Katakuri is his Zan Giri Mochi attack which when he uses it...his haki changes shape. So the idea that there are different types of hardening, seems likely. And remember that attack was compared to Luffy's Gear 4 haki in looks and for Luffy in particular, his haki during gear 4 definitely isn't on the same scale as base Luffy.

Meio means Ruler of the Underworld in Japanese. Although it is not originated from Japanese culture, it is the translation of Ruler of the Underworld from other culture, Hade and Pluto alike. When a mortal (in a story) is given this name, it normally means he could bring total destruction=death (but not really, he is just very strong). The dwarf planet Pluto is called "Mei-o-sei" in Japanese. So, the ancient weapon Pluton can be called Meio as well. Most of the time in English, Meio is translated into Dark King. I think it is probably trying to avoid using Hade or Pluto on purpose. Because reader could mix it up with Greek/Roman mythology. If Meio is translated into Dark King, then supposedly the Underworld that he rules should be translated into "Dark Realm". Anyway, for Rayleigh, I think it probably came from the destructive force he represented, he is Roger's "Pluton". Rayleigh maybe stronger than Roger, who knows?
Any serious Sailor Moon fan can tell you about the names/epithets of Ten'ou, Kai'ou, and Mei'ou being connected to Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto respectively. It just wasn't until a few months ago when I learned that "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh was actually Mei'ou in Japanese. Since I learned that tidbit of information, I have come across a number of theories discussing how the Sea Kings (which are, naturally, connected to the Ancient Weapon Poseidon) are written with the kanji for Kai'ou and the Tenryubito are written with the kanji for Ten'ou (proposing some connection between the Tenryubito and the Ancient Weapon Uranus). However, I have never seen anyone in theorycraft draw on the connection between Rayleigh's epithet and Pluton. So, where I'm going with this is, what if the reason Rayleigh is known as Mei'ou is because he has some connection to the Ancient Weapon Pluton? Could that be something that may come to light in the Final War, with Mei'ou Silvers Rayleigh showing up at the controls of his namesake weapon?

What if Luffy just rejects being Pirate King because being just Luffy gives him more freedom than being Pirate King would? Just being Pirate King put a huge target on Ace, finding the Pirate Kings treasure is one of the most important things the WG doesnt want to happen. I personally always assumed the title Dark King referred to Rayleigh being the "unofficial King of Pirates" after Roger. After Roger was executed I assume Rayleigh basically inherited his status to a certain degree. He also was at Raftel, he also knows what the One Piece is and I'm certain he wasn't significantly weaker than Roger. As Roger stood at the top in the end, so did Rayleigh to everyone in the know. He wasn't as known as Roger and he never claimed the title. That is why he is the Dark King. The effective but hidden King of Pirates until another Roger comes along to claim it, as feared and respected like Roger by everyone who's important. I could also be wrong about that but that was always my assumption.
I've always thought the "Dark King" name was kinda like the Shadow Hokage (Sasuke) in Naruto. Basically meaning their other half, Roger for OP and Naruto, are the main leaders in their respective verse but they were there to step up if needed for anything

I’ve thought about this a lot and his strength is clearly indisputable. I think the Dark King title might like @tekking101 mentioned about him being second in command. However, since the death of Roger, Rayleigh by default would be the could be viewed as the Dark King by the world government bc he knows everything about literally everything. Therefore, I think the world government dubbed him the Dark King bc since the disbandment of the Roger pirates he’s the closest person Roger in strength, the one piece and void century knowledge. With that said I believe the title of King of the Pirates passed down to Rayleigh by default hence the Dark King bc he’s an untouchable and essentially a made man

bronze doesn't necessarily contain tin, arsenic was also used historically (not anymore for obvious reasons).

@@r4nd0mguy99 I don't think mohawk necessarily registers to the world government as weak, I think Rayleigh's position as someone the world government isn't going after isn't purely because of his strength, it's also because it's not worth hunting him down in a populated area constantly filled with world nobles that would have to be fussed over because he's not actually doing anything, just drinking himself to death, acting as a shipwright, and selling himself into slavery every now and then.
Mihawk on the other hand is a threat to their governance as a whole that everybody and their mother knows about, and was televised just 2 years ago as someone fighting for the world government. If they let him off the hook and don't try and chase him down, it comes off as an endorsement of an active pirate who made his name hunting Marines. Mihawk has also probably grown stronger since he got the title of warlord,
Really love Rayleigh. During his prime pirate days I got him in the top 5 of that era. Essentially why I never liked the Oden narrative of fans believing they were on the same level. Oda to me clearly has displayed Rayleigh as more of a pivotal figure both pirate wise and strength wise .

I think it’s definitely just that Roger was the the pirate king and Rayleigh being the man behind him, his right hand maybe didn’t get as much of the attention compared to Roger and so he was in the shadows relatively but he was still a monster to go up against
I think it'd be cool if his title was in reference to his usage and skill with Haki. Kind of like how Black Baldes and Black Arm Zephyr got their names as well.

On armament haki: I am reminded of the game Overlord.
In the game you can sacrifice your minions to upgrade your weapons & armor (there are 4 colors: brown, red, green & blue), with each color boosting a different stat.
If you ONLY sacrifice brown ones to your armor, you become near-indestructible (as the brown minions upgrade your armor's Defense stat); likewise, they also create the strongest weapons, as they boost a weapon's raw Damage stat.
(Back to video: I'm certain that, while the haki is part of it, Rayleigh's title of Dark King comes from him being the 2nd in command to Roger while also being a terrifying badass himself.

I always figured he just picked the swords up and or stole them as he was going somewhere. Not like there is a shortage of swords in the world and who could stop him. He would is also like many high level characters where he enjoys toying with his opponents, like blocking Marco with a finger. He is basically running a randomizer challenge.

Agreed. I had hoped he would join the cast, we haven't had a new member in quite a while. But maybe he'll come back someday, after all we know how OP Barry himself is, as seen with his display of power during the Admiral and Officers video on the Navy, and it's very possible that OP power is genetic, which means even being dead and buried will not stop Barry's Ddad from rising again.
I always took his title as a reference that he is the strongest pirate in the world until the New Pirate King arrived and brought the Dawn. Until the New Dawn arrives, he’s the King, the vice captain of the Roger pirates, who previously claimed the One Piece 🤷♀️🏴☠️🌅
I dont know if it was intentional but something I've always enjoyed about his epithet being dark king is how oxidized silver has this dark almost black chrome look to it when jewelry is left untreated long enough paralleling how when we meet him he's this unkempt drunkard in prison not keeping himself polished like he was on Roger's crew

Personally I always liked to believe he is named "the dark King" because as the second in comand he stands in Rogers shadow, BUT he very well could be the head of any high class organisation because of his insane strenght. As well as the fact that Roger seems a lot like Luffy, making decisions out of the blue while Rayleigh is more calculated pulling the strings in Rogers shadow, making him the Dark King.

Great video. In my opinion I think the reason why Rayleigh got his title the dark king is because Gol D. Roger is the king of light maybe and since Rayleigh is the right hand man for Gol. D. Roger he has a opposite title. My opinion of the various connections between Zoro and Reyleigh I think Zoro is the younger version of Rayleigh just passing generations.

19:20 I prefer to go the same way as the Ancient Weapons for this. We have Unraus, Poseidon and Pluton. We assume Uranus is -what was used to wipe Lulusia- [What's a Lulusia? that place never existed] a flying weapon, because Uranus was a Sky God. Then you have Poseidon, a mermaid princess under the water, as Poseidon is the god of the Sea. Finally Pluton. The weapon is a ship, so sea again, but it travels at surface level, and it's the one that can interact with land. It's a seafaring vessel because if it was circumscript to land it couldn't leave the island where it was created, but it represents the underworld, Pluto (not to mix with the other Roman God Pluto, god of riches and abundance), Hades. If we want to assign them elements, Uranus would be air, Poseidon would be water, and Pluton would be earth. Now let's think of the Strawhats. Let's take Luffy away from the equation for a minute, who are the heavy hitters in the crew. Zoro, Sanji and Jinbe. Zoro, son of Terra, that means Earth. Sanji, son of Sora, that means Sky. Jinbe, known as "First Son of the Sea". Zoro is Pluton, or Hades, Sanji is Uranus, Jinbe is Poseidon, while Luffy is the Sun
I liken hardening as like the base stat of armament. You use it first, then you can add the other types of armament to add different effects, but hardening is like the base stat. You can be strong enough to punch apart amountain with just hardening, but its just easier if you can use ryuo to break through the natural resilience of the mountain and destroy it from the inside. You wouldn't need to have as high a level of basic hardening.

I had a thought relating to the idea of “Dark King” and “Ruler of Hell” being related to the shadow of their captain. This could be similar to how Zoro acted on Whiskey Peak and Luffy acted on Sky Island. Luffy is constantly out in the light fighting the big bosses and literal Gods, but Zoro fights in the dark and deals with the sneakier and ‘weaker’ opponents. I assume Roger would have been very similar to Luffy in this manner, but we don’t know for sure. I don’t know how credible this could be, but it feels like a common trend with the Straw Hats to have Luffy fight the big battle that gets the news stories while Zoro cuts down enemies and gets regarded as a sort of rumor because of the mystery.

So another thing about Katakuri is his Zan Giri Mochi attack which when he uses it...his haki changes shape. So the idea that there are different types of hardening, seems likely. And remember that attack was compared to Luffy's Gear 4 haki in looks and for Luffy in particular, his haki during gear 4 definitely isn't on the same scale as base Luffy.

Can you do a video on how Sanji’s brothers actually do have emotions? If you go back to rewatch/reread Whole Cake Island, you can see that his siblings do have emotions but they just ignore them and don’t act on said emotions (most of the time)
They do have positive emotions, like joy, love, etc., they just lack negative emotions, like fear.

Meio means Ruler of the Underworld in Japanese. Although it is not originated from Japanese culture, it is the translation of Ruler of the Underworld from other culture, Hade and Pluto alike.
When a mortal (in a story) is given this name, it normally means he could bring total destruction=death (but not really, he is just very strong).
The dwarf planet Pluto is called "Mei-o-sei" in Japanese. So, the ancient weapon Pluton can be called Meio as well.
Most of the time in English, Meio is translated into Dark King. I think it is probably trying to avoid using Hade or Pluto on purpose. Because reader could mix it up with Greek/Roman mythology.
If Meio is translated into Dark King, then supposedly the Underworld that he rules should be translated into "Dark Realm".
Anyway, for Rayleigh, I think it probably came from the destructive force he represented, he is Roger's "Pluton".

Any serious Sailor Moon fan can tell you about the names/epithets of Ten'ou, Kai'ou, and Mei'ou being connected to Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto respectively. It just wasn't until a few months ago when I learned that "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh was actually Mei'ou in Japanese. Since I learned that tidbit of information, I have come across a number of theories discussing how the Sea Kings (which are, naturally, connected to the Ancient Weapon Poseidon) are written with the kanji for Kai'ou and the Tenryubito are written with the kanji for Ten'ou (proposing some connection between the Tenryubito and the Ancient Weapon Uranus). However, I have never seen anyone in theorycraft draw on the connection between Rayleigh's epithet and Pluton. So, where I'm going with this is, what if the reason Rayleigh is known as Mei'ou is because he has some connection to the Ancient Weapon Pluton? Could that be something that may come to light in the Final War, with Mei'ou Silvers Rayleigh showing up at the controls of his namesake weapon?
I always assumed it was because he was the shadow king of the pirates, like Roger was the king no doubts but he was too free to do any of the kinging so Rayleigh was the one doing the book keeping, making the rules, filing the taxes, making sure everyone ate their vegetables, wrote the speaches and did apl the press interviews

Just being Pirate King put a huge target on Ace, finding the Pirate Kings treasure is one of the most important things the WG doesnt want to happen. Luffy could do it like Mihawk and Crocodile did, just without it being calculated, and let Buggy have the spotlight so he can enjoy life in the shadows
I personally always assumed the title Dark King referred to Rayleigh being the "unofficial King of Pirates" after Roger.
After Roger was executed I assume Rayleigh basically inherited his status to a certain degree. He also was at Raftel, he also knows what the One Piece is and I'm certain he wasn't significantly weaker than Roger.
As Roger stood at the top in the end, so did Rayleigh to everyone in the know. He wasn't as known as Roger and he never claimed the title. That is why he is the Dark King. The effective but hidden King of Pirates until another Roger comes along to claim it, as feared and respected like Roger by everyone who's important.
I could also be wrong about that but that was always my assumption.

I’ve thought about this a lot and his strength is clearly indisputable. I think the Dark King title might like @tekking101 mentioned about him being second in command. However, since the death of Roger, Rayleigh by default would be the could be viewed as the Dark King by the world government bc he knows everything about literally everything. Therefore, I think the world government dubbed him the Dark King bc since the disbandment of the Roger pirates he’s the closest person Roger in strength, the one piece and void century knowledge. With that said I believe the title of King of the Pirates passed down to Rayleigh by default hence the Dark King bc he’s an untouchable and essentially a made man
