Hello this is Pierre Beaule. On my 50'GulfStar I used the free welling prop shaft with multiplier pulley to a generator. At 3 knots I was able to get 15 to 20 amps/12 volts ''Bon vent'' SV TEULU.
There you go again Becka, making me tear up watching your tears of joy. Great team guys. Electric work on boats is really something to watch. Ceilings come down, floors come up, holes are drilled and people get shocked. Good job Zach. You are real methodical and precise in your jobs. Stay safe.
I just binged watch all about your start to when you said bye to your parent's. And it brought tears to my eye's and jealousy, enjoy your time going around the world have fun both of you. Most of all support each other.
I think you might need to use stronger framing for your solar mount on the davits. I'm sure the davits can take the load but the thin straps you have and only a couple of connection points might be a problem. Those solar arrays are made for mounting on a roof where there wont be much lift underneath from wind as it would be blocked by the building. During a storm your boat will pitch and roll and there will be a chance the rear solar array could catch the wind. I think you have the right idea for the davits and it looks like the brackets on the davits are strong enough but I would suggest you need more under structure with several attachment to keep the solar array down.
..... Holy "Solar Panels" Batman ... that sure is exciting .... love the big map, vision board per say in the galley .... emotions are a good thing, too many have fear of showing them and keep them pent up inside, not good .... well done guys on the electrics ... the done list is getting pretty long, well done ..... . thx for the share .... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Great job in installing the panels. I do have one concern with the panel on the roof. You have fixed it to the hand rails and so made them inaccessible. if you are caught out in a blow and need to go forward you need as many hand holds as you can have and you have just covered up a big bit on each side. you should probably look to add an additional hand rail that clams to the existing one and extends past the ends of the panel.
I am an electrician in California that lives in a van. I pieced my system together and went completely off grid this year. I was so happy when I could run my microwave and tea kettle at the same time.

Great job, so satisfying. We recently re-powered our boat. Used to have 600Ah of AGM with about 400w of solar. Went for 2x200Ah of lithium with 740w of solar. Using 2 EPever controllers. Using flexible panels. We have saved 150kg with the change. Just did a week on the boat. Two fridges running, one is a 60L the other is a 90L fridge/freezer. I also changed lights to LED. Ran inverter during the day to charge laptop etc and to run hot water service. It the mornings we got to 84%(we ran fans in bed rooms overnight as well). We had full overcast weather for two days, sailed with full systems running and autopilot. That got us down to 74%. During days of sun we where at 100% by midday, that's while sailing. So far it's been a au$3500 job. We have a wind generator too, but have had to connect to windlass battery which is lead acid. Will connect windlass back to house bank via DC2DC so we get charging from wind as well.
Thanks! Oh cool, 150kg is a lot of weight to save! Sounds like you have found the perfect solution 😊 apparently we just don’t consume too much power so we also haven’t dropped below 75% but we do run a lot less than you! 🙈 we were looking at a wind gen but were put off by the noise (even on the silent ones)- does it ever bother you?
Well done on fitting the solar . I fitted a 400w to my narrow boat I'm running 4 X 120 batteries. Best thing I did. Keep up the good work maybe when I get my yacht il bump into you both
Wow! What a game changer and how cool does the boat look!! Big ((hugs)) Becca for being so happily emotional. You and Zach have moved up another level 😀👌👍
More batteries is better than more panels. I left the U.K. forty years ago and moved to the cloudiest part of the U.S.A. We still get more sunny days in a week than i ever saw in a month in England. Love your videos ,keep them coming guys.
Hi David, finance limits us a bit in terms of batteries- however, we have been living aboard offshore for a few weeks now in cloudy/rainy England and not once dropped below 75%- maybe we just don't use much electricity! Glad you enjoy the vids 😊
Like your picture on the wall says. "Anything is Possible" . The ability of both of you tackling a project with research, planning, execution (electrocution sometimes, LOL) you will prevail. best wishes to you both. Cheers.
Well done on the induction Hob, they're brilliant and to help save more Gas, get a Pressure cooker that works on hob plus gas, so you can get up to pressure faston the induction Hob, hob, then gas in low just to tick over on the Gas Hob until finished cooking, to save all those e tra battery amps. 👍🙂
I agree with john owens comment bellow ?? U could always get and after market hand rail extension that would bolt onto or around the solar panel ,, you need safety first and formost at sea !!
Absolutely epic job, well done both of you, the emotion felt when a job goes well and comes together far outweighed all those negative moments. Onward and upward.
Team work makes the dream work, such a great comment from your Dad about the solar being awesome, it really is fascinating that we can harness the suns energy in this way 👍👍
Absolutely fantastic guys. A bit of advise though. Please use stronger supports for you davit mounted solar panel. Angle or even u channel would be stronger than flat bar. It’s ok now but in strong gusts you don’t want it ripping off.
Well did I notice during the wiring that chap found another locker/cupboard to get scrambled into 😂, really lovely informative video , I have said it before now I say it again don’t change anything about the way you put your videos together because that’s what we all love the most ,so many Chanel’s spoil it for themselves you are both a dream team as you are , have a great week best regards Paul
It’s been fun watching some of these older videos as you set up the boat in Plymouth. A quick thought on the panel over the davits. It’s quite large and I assume the davits can still rotate. Might be an idea to add a SS pole transverse between the davits under the panel to prevent the frame of the solar oaken taking any load. Would hate to see it crack.
Awesome job on the solar! It’s a great feeling to be off grid. In general, learn to live with less though as a fridge, radios, computer, and maybe autopilot will put a big dent in the battery bank when the sun goes down. But learning is half the fun/challenge. Some have mentioned the panel on the davits needing more bracing like angle instead of flat bar. Definitely something to consider as any vertical edge is the strength and flat bar laying flat has none. Since the brackets on the flat bar are in from the outer frame, big winds from the underside or a slam downward may flex the flat bar and damage the panel. I prefer working with angle as it is almost as strong as square tubing but is much easier to bolt together. Since the panels are about 4’ (1.3 meters?) wide, get a section of angle at the store and see how much it flexes; it shouldn’t. You can lay it across the floor with one side on a shelf or some object to test it out. Or pull a longer piece out about 4’ from the rack and pull down on it. You can cut small sections a few inches long too to make L and T brackets at the ends of the length of angle to bolt to more of the frame or make Z brackets for height or??? Someone mentioned diodes for the panels if one gets shady but that’s not necessary. If they are wired in parallel they will both reach full voltage quickly with hardly any sun, then push current (amps) as they get more direct sun. You can experiment and watch the controller display as you cover one. Anyway, looks great and wish you both the best. Cheers!
Thanks! We actually have a really small energy consumption footprint! 3 weeks living fully off grid and we have never dipped our batteries below 75% 😊At the moment the panel hasn't moved or flexed and we have been in 35 knots of wind but at some point, if needed, we will take on board your advice and fit an angled section. Thanks for all your helpful suggestions! 😊
The solar guys should have insisted on you buying a few pieces of actual racking. I fear your flat aluminum pieces are bending so much already that it will contact the stern solar panel’s backing. Believe me you don’t want something conducive to rub through it. ⚡️ At least consider using some heavier aluminum angle or square stock so it’s not bending and flopping around on you.
Excellent job on the solar installation. Hi guys the new panels looks like a solar array you See on a roof.. incred for your wonderful home on the high seas…. Don’t forget to give them a wipe off North Africa etc ie lanzerotte etc, as it’s not to rainy down there and the wind is good and constant but not especially strong near the equator so you get sand off the Sahara coating them and you may not notice it but it does affect the panels. So like your car give em a wash.. lol once you get further afield and are an hour partic in the pacific you can anchor and have all the gear working like cooking and even movies on laptops etc and you be laughing… be warning though you may have guests wanting to watch your latest movie download.. have fun and another great vid

OMG I wish I had that much power. So cool. You are using thin gauge long metal sheet stock to hold the rear/aft panel. Wind flowing under may cause vibration and reduce the life of the panel. If you see this vibration, you may want to change it to square tubing for more rigidity. Love your analog agile task system using tape and torn pieces of paper. Also noticed the correct drill speed for drilling holes into metal. This maybe the first video I watched someone using the slow speed high torque setting. You had more happy tears than when you got the boat! Haha
Handy, Smart, Good sense of Humor and Wise< Knowing when you cant do it and asking for help.> Filmography is spot on. These are the reasons i folo Teulu and will continue to do so. Fair Winds 😎
Job well done with a good cry - all good and essential to success and sanity. Solar was the next natural step after the wiring update. Some words of wisdom though; don't be seduced by expensive lithium as AGM batteries run many fleets. Keep the connections tight, inspect often and keep a good charging balance. You'll be just fine. Let sponsorships carry those types of costs later on. Cheers!
Thanks so much. It really was the next nature step 😊We are super happy with our AGM's (even though we tried to get convinced otherwise on so many different occasions!)
Great job guys. Make sure you keep the panels clean as salt spray, seagull poop will really reduce the power they deliver. With the price of gas and electricity on the rise I think many can learn from your example. Once again, great job guys 👍
Great video, you keep it real! Electrics are hard. I cannot wait to see you both out on the Deep Blue Sea- you have a great boat and I enjoy you both and your stories and humor. Hugs. 😀
I would fix that panel on the davits with something stronger than flat bar especially if it's aluminium. Angle would be better and four lengths so you're bolting it both sides of the davit tubing. So good to get solar power , the more the better. I might be wrong but if you run both panels in line and one gets shaded form the sails the other will reduce it's output to the same amount unless you get an optimiser for each panel. Sorry if you've done that.
Both panels are split into two and wired to a smart charger which seems to reduce the effect of one panel being in the shade reducing all the others. As for the bar, we were a little worried about this too but it has held up great in rough weather so far (however, will look to replace this with stainless or angled if it starts to wobble at any point) thanks for the advice 😊
@@TeuluTribe I'd be more worried about the wind than swell , aluminium is soft and it tears. Great to see you having a go at everything on the boat, it's the best way to learn and to understand the boat...good luck
Really cool episode. Been watching your channel(s) for a few years and it’s amazing to see your development and progress. It’s not always clear in the episodes but I can tell you are both doing a tremendous amount of research on your journey into marine life. Really enjoying it.

Some unwanted and in appropriate spam in the comments... I have reported most of them but several seem to be bouncing back in alternate forms. Well done both of you, great progress with the solar. Less reliance on gas is always a bonus. Back in my cruising days, gas was always a pain... running out miles from anywhere, ending up with a replacement cylinder and finding the regulator didn't fit... a nightmare!

Haha
Thanks so much! We are going to look into fixing a cross beam for support at some point. So many happy tears 🤣
Well done ! And good on ya !
Thanks so much!
To cute!😊
You pair are amazing, love the genuine ,raw emotion and excitement that comes with every episode, please don’t ever change, not that I think you will!
Aw thanks Ian!! We wont!! 😊
What a great job you guys are doing, the skills you are learning will stand you in good stead when you are travelling the world.
Thanks so much Michael!
Got a couple of Sunny songs for you! John Denver "Sunshine on my shoulders" and Beatles "Good day sunshine" or "Here comes the sun" 🖖 ☀☀☀
Good suggestions! Thanks Cesar 😊
Handy, Smart, Good sense of Humor and Wise< Knowing when you cant do it and asking for help.> Filmography is spot on. These are the reasons i folo Teulu and will continue to do so. Fair Winds 😎
Aw Darrell- you are making us blush! Thanks so much for being here and supporting us 😊
it is great to see your sense of accomplishment and sheer joy. well done guys
Thanks so much James!
Dont say things like might not seem like a big thing... THIS IS MAJOR! Im so happy to see your goals coming to fruition.
Aw, it was pretty major for us! And a huge job ticked off the list 😊
Look at those solar panels! Epic! Sending all my best wishes & great memories to be made. Enjoy the process ✌
Thanks so much Rachel! 😊😊
Well done to you both. Tears of joy!
Thanks Simon! They really were!
Well done on another fine installation and well produced video.
Thanks so much 😊
Well Done!!!!! I'm subscribed to many sailing channels, Teulu Tribe is up there with the best.
Awww Mike!! That is so kind of you to say! Thank you 😊
Another great video. But best you check the regulations for gas installations for a yacht. Got to keep you two safe👍
Thanks. We recently (in another video) had the gas inspected by a marine gas engineer.
Great job guys. Make sure you keep the panels clean as salt spray, seagull poop will really reduce the power they deliver. With the price of gas and electricity on the rise I think many can learn from your example. Once again, great job guys 👍
Will do! Thanks so much for the advice Mike. Considering the current electricity prices- we are over the moon with our intallation 😊
Excellent job, so pleased for you both
Thanks David! 😊
Well done though guys, superb job.
Tell us in the videos what inverter etc you are fitting?
Thanks Jay- we fitted the Victron 1200W Inverter
Great video, you keep it real! Electrics are hard. I cannot wait to see you both out on the Deep Blue Sea- you have a great boat and I enjoy you both and your stories and humor. Hugs. 😀
Thanks Gary! They really can be. Glad you enjoy the vids. Hugs back!
You have done so well. Just keep a close eye on that Victron app and you will be good.
Thanks so much Mark! That app is epic- so glad we went with the shunt 😊
Bravo!
Thanks Georgi ☺️
Great job!
Thanks!
Tears of Joy 😊 so proud of you both 👍🏻💪🏻
They really were! Thanks Marcel!!
Good stuff!! Just a little concerned with you covering the grab rails on the coach roof.
Thanks! We have jacklines, safety rails and the panel is only 1M so we can hold either side 😊
You and your boat have been continuously improving your capabilities and knowledge. From buying the boat, leaving the dock for the first time until now, it’s really cool to watch and follow along. Really enjoying it.
Aw Conor, it means a lot for you to have stuck around for a long time! It sure has been a wild adventure and we are glad you can be part of it with us 😊
Some unwanted and in appropriate spam in the comments...
Thanks Peter- those comments are pretty annoying! We are very happy we no longer have to rely 100% on the gas!
Next up! Fresh water maker. And then all you need is fish‼
Yes! A watermaker is on the list! But with the ££££ price tag, that may have to wait a little while 😅
Epic
