What is truly terrifying about Catra in this episode is that she *genuinely* doesn't care what happens to her. The only options she sees are either to get the tech she was sent to retrieve, or die trying.
It’s so heartbreaking to see Catra finally find some happiness, only for her to regress back after finding out about Shadow Weaver joining the princesses. This just shows how much this show goes in depth when it comes to her trauma. All the emotional abuse, her abandonment issues, the constant favoritism of other people (Adora, Entrapta …), everything she experienced led to this moment where she finally snapped. Most people would think that the victim would be happy that their abuser is now on the enemy's side, but in reality it’s way more complex than that. For a show that looks so pretty and kid-friendly, it sure has some mature writing.
That’s what I love about this show. It’s beautiful to look at and very soft but also realistic and transparent about some of its darker themes without over dramatizing them.
It even gives her a little bit of a parallel with Hordak. They're both in positions where, yeah, it's not the life they thought they'd have, but they are still happy and have even found someone to be happy with. But they just can't...let go. They're both too obsessed with proving that they're not failures.
My favorite part is how Catra's reaction to parties is SO PURE. After spending the day as this ruthless persona she takes Scorpia's hand and skips away giggling like a schoolgirl. And goes "THEY SAID IT'S CALLED A PARTY. I like it!" Imagine spending all the first 17 years of your life without knowing what a party is!
It's also the most bittersweet part. This person who's barely into adulthood knows how to ruthlessly take down one of the most fearsome gang leaders, yet had never known the simple joy of celebrating/a party🥲 but yes she's so pure in that moment😂🥺
Notice: Adora only NOW finds out that Shadow Weaver had left Catra behind to be killed by Hordak. She's geniuenly surprised that Catra didn't know that Shadow Weaver is in Bright Moon. Shadow Weaver LIED to Adora that Catra had exiled her...
@@iceheart974 Shadow Weaver was twisting the truth rather than outright lying. Catra went behind her back with the Black Garnett, which can technically be counted as a betrayal, and Hordak wanted her to be sent to Beast Island. For all intents and purposes, Shadow Weaver WAS exiled. Her escape was a desperate, last minute scramble to avoid Beast Island and she nearly killed herself in the process. Shadow Weaver deliberately twisted what actually happened and refused to give Adora the full context. She's a master manipulator so she knows that blatant lies can be easily disproven but lies that contain elements of truth cannot.
That last question got me thinking. The symbol on the back of Catra's jacket is an oroborus, the snake swallowing its own tail. This is an ancient symbol that usually means infinity or eternity, but originally it was about cycles of life and of transformation, and I think that's what it's doing here: Catra transforms, but ultimately returns to where she started, briefly showing who she could be in an environment that fit her before returning to the angry, power-hungry Horde soldier at the end, closing the circle.
It kind of gets overshadowed in this episode by how good all the Catra stuff is, and AJ’s voice acting is top tier once again, but Adora’s little breakdown when they first find the hologram is such a good moment. Aimee does such a good job here. I feel so bad for this girl. She just wants answers and you can feel the desperation and frustration. The sense that no matter what she does it’s seemingly not enough. Even though I ship Catra and Adora, the Scorpia and Catra moment toward the end is beyond precious. This whole episode was great for them. Until the end, I mean. That last scene after Catra finds out about SW always fills me with dread. Just everything going dark around her as she gets noticeably more upset. Ugh. Buckle up, my friends. It mostly doesn’t stop from this point on.
Catra's my least favourite character but despite that, I fully acknowledge that AJ Michalka is a phenomenal voice actress. To this day, I still think Corridors is heartbreaking, even though I wish Catra had died in Season 5. My empathy was at war with the fact that Catra's a terrible person which results in a "I hate you but damn it, I feel sorry for you" feeling. Honestly, if Catra had died in either Corridors (do a blaze of glory last stand like with Shadow Weaver) or Save the Cat (have a more subdued ending where everyone acknowledges that Catra brought it all on herself but feels bad anyway), I'd be calling her one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time. She'd be right up there with Azula, who got the miserable ending that she deserved but damn if I didn't feel bad for her when it happened. Apart from Keston John, who can have entire conversations with himself and make me completely believe that Hordak and Horde Prime are different people despite having similar voices, I think AJ Michalka's the most naturally talented member of the entire cast. Lorraine Toussaint and Geena Davis have more experience but that's not the same as having more talent. Christine Woods is my personal favourite cast member but she doesn't have as much raw talent as the others. It makes me admire her all the more because she was willing to put in the work to get better and by the time Season 5 came out, she'd grown so much as a voice actress that she could carry any scene that had Entrapta in it on her shoulders.
@@tomnorton4277 Catra Is my favorite character from this show, but I completely understand where your dislike comes from. For a while I hated her lol. That's also what I want to see happen with Azula. They're such complex characters that have so much potential for more where they're the main. Anyway, I'm getting off track 😅 I agree! "Some people have a bad day, I've had a bad life; f I want something, it's taken from me; if I win a fight, I lose the war. Threats only work on someone who has something to lose. But me, I've already lost it all!"
One interesting thing that wasn't touched on in the post-episode discussion was exactly why Catra was upset to learn that Shadow Weaver is in Bright Moon. It's not necessarily because Shadow Weaver is helping her enemies. It's because Shadow Weaver always treated Catra like she was dead weight while giving preferential treatment to Adora, and she did it again by using Catra's need for affection to escape only to immediately go to Adora.
Even though I don’t ship it, I love how soft Scorpia and Catra are with each other in this episode. Makes my heart melt every time. EsPECially the SLOW BLINK.
I cannot stress how EXCITED I am for Montana’s reaction to this one, mainly cuz the simping is going to be SO entertaining. And because it’s nice to see her laughing since I can relate to the changes she was going through. However, I fear for both of you in advance for how this episode ends. The moment she snaps, her brisk walk, and under-her-breath growls give me chills every time. 😨
Mara's line "maybe it's been a week; maybe it's been thousands of years" (16:16) just hits so hard for me, it really just emphasizes how alone she was, how scared she was for the future, even more than Catra's scenes (which is *huge* to top)
I don't think it was that SW became Catra's active enemy again. It was that once again, Catra had been abandoned. "Shadow Weaver left me..for YOU? All of this happened, because of YOU." SW chose to leave the Horde and join the enemy because Adora was there and this whole time SW only wanted Adora. Despite the fact that Adora had betrayed the Horde and had been actively working against them this whole time. And despite the fact that Catra did EVERYTHING that SW expected from Adora, but it wasn't enough to keep her there cuz at the end of the day it was just Catra who was accomplishing it & SW could care less about Catra. So SW abandoning the Horde & Catra for Adora directly led to Catra's fall from Hordaks Grace, to her receiving a literal (at least they believed it) death sentence (Beast Island/Crimson Waste). All because 'Catra isn't good enough, not like Adora'.
I love how hard the emotion shifts and you can feel all the lightness of the episode *drop* all in one moment when Catra hears that Shadow Weaver is working with Adora
Also while Catras arc is amazing and the lore drops are v cool, do try and keep note of the shifts in Adora's mental state over this season! Her breakdown moment this ep and in the following are important for understanding what she's going through! Her shifts are much more subtle/slower than Catras, and because she's good at seeming functioning people don't always notice, but boi she changes a lot over the series. It often isn't truly appreciated till rewatch, but I hope your able to pick up at least a bit!
@@nightnaughty oh definitely, but imo I think the whole series is. Season 4 to me feels like a build up of pressure that can't be ignored anymore, though is particularly devastating because well..... spoilers Spoilers here: It's the repeat of her cycles, but now with the hurt coming from the people she had came to see as safe. The people who were helping her heal, which make it hit far far harder. Especially when, like catra, after this finally she retreats so hard into old patterns. In this way she's so much like Catra, stuck in a cycle, and the season 4 loop truly hits hard on that front.
THIS EPISODE>> the most feared people are afraid of catra, such a queen, and THE OUTFIT with leather jacket!!! OH MY GOD im a simp for crimson waste catra 🙏 also she deserved that moment and to have a little of happiness fon once, tho it didn't last long :(
I have another layer to add to the Shadow Weaver stuff : A big conflict between Adora and Catra is also that Adora was Shadow Weaver's little favorite while the blame always fell on Catra ! SW kept communicating that she was seeing Catra as a nuisance, and only accepted her around her perfect little Adora because it made Adora happy ! Thus, loosing SW and learning that SW left her for Adora is so hard for her : despite everythhing she's done, all the rank she gained, all her successes she still wasn't good enough for her parental figure who abandonned her once again for Adora ...
It is really overdone to compare villain character arcs to Zuko’s character arc, but there are several very specific moments that Zuko and Catra share that I find really interesting, and this is one of them. Being shown the possibility of a different life where they could be genuinely happy with the person that has supported them the whole time (the tea shop with Iroh, the crimson waste with Scorpia), but with the caveat that staying in such a way would never prompt them to change or confront any of the problems or issues that they had before (which would be a very dissatisfying way to end a character arc), and their old desires and insecurities cause them to give up that possibility and hurt the ones that supported them.

08:33 Oh, quicksands are real all right! And you can even make one yourself. You add a certain amount of water to sand or other dust so that the particles start floating around in it. Then it becomes a non-Newtonian fluid: it appears hard and solid when you move fast, but becomes goopy and liquid when you move slower, and you start drowning in it. There are videos on TH-cam demonstrating that, and instructional videos about how to escape from quicksands. So yeah, if anything is a trope in movies, is that you can drown in quicksands if you don't get any external help, because in most cases, you can escape on your own by moving in a certain way.
the way catra has a full blown panic attack when she found about shadow weaver being in brightmoon... uneven breathing, unaware of the surroundings, tears, poor thing
Feels like you've barely finished it and I'm already rewatching your reactions, they're just so entertaining. Plus, more Catra is never gonna be a bad thing.
This episode is a delight. This and the previous episode give me vibes from ATLA (The Library and The Desert) and LOK (The Stakeout and Long Live the Queen). Poor Catra though, they always find a new way to make her suffer.
Catra almost found a purpose/happiness and its so heartbreaking how it all went away when she realized the one person she wanted to connect with (Shadoweaver) abandoned her for the person who did abandon her :(((
The Catra and Scorpia bonding moments were really cute, Catra was even openly nice to Scorpia and she even laughed and pulled Scorpia along like she did with Adora; which makes her regression (and what happens after) all the more heartbreaking
I sank ankle deep in quicksand in the mountains in northern CA when I was a kid (12 I think). I was nearby a tree with low hanging branches, and with another kid, so I was fine, but I can see it being dangerous to someone who wasn't paying attention.
Y'all really good at reading charachters. More on point than you imagine at some of the things you said. Catra's tunnel vision after founding out about Shadow Weaver is one of my favorites, because of how greatly It portrays what's going on inside her. So painful, but great. And now it's aaaall downhill
the scene where catra and scorpia go out, after the celebration, Noelle (shera's creator) says that scorpia kisses catra, she didn't put that in the drawing but says it's Cannon
09:11 pfft 13:42 I forgot how much I love "Can't be that hard" "I think I'll be taking it" omg omg I forgot how much I absolutely love CW! Catra 13:13 oh the exchanged glance 17:25 heh and not taking the darts out I forgot how much I was dreading the the Shadoweaver reveal and the drop from happy party, thinking about staying and ruling with Scorpia, and just--tone drop, mental spiraling and dimming of senses 25:50 mmm
This episode is when Catra loses it. She's broken and hellbend on getting revenge crushing those who hurt her. I'm interested to see what Montana is going to see in Catra from her professional point of view
The thing is, no matter how happy Catra felt in the crimson waste, she would never choose to leave everything behind to live there because that would mean never seeing Adora again.
Iv been waiting for this for a hot minute. I mean, I'm glad ur better hun, your health always comes first. But iv been so excited specifically because of all of the katra moments and simping I knew was coming. U guys never disappoint!
The way Catra talks and acts in this episode is how I would bluff my school bullies after I snapped at some point after several years of non-stop bullshit. I wouldn't hurt anyone (not more than they hurt me), just made sure to scare trouble away the moment I spotted it.
Catra demands approval from Shadoweaver, Hordak, and Adora, especially Shadoweaver. They form a warped family. She wants Hordak to say she’s useful, Adora to lose to her, and Shadoweaver to say she makes her proud. She wants validation of her life. She desperately wants love and is seeking it in the places she won’t get it. Adora’s probably the closest right now but Adora trying to “save her” just triggers the rivalry and makes her feel condescended to. What I think she needs the most right now is validation from Shadoweaver or to just break it off, but she won’t and she can’t. The only thing holding Catra together right now is Scorpio’s friendship, but she doesn’t see it, and she’s going to break it.
You're starting to find out why Mara turned on the other First Ones. The story gets more intense from here. Buckle up. The main theme starts to coalesce now: destiny/expectations versus self realization. Mara had to choose between the two, and so will Adora. I think the main theme is a meta-metaphor for coming out. That last part makes more sense when you see Adora's ultimate reward for the choice she makes.
Catra's centred episodes are the best ones (1x11, 2x2, 3x3, 5x5), because we can see all of her, the reason way she make hers decisicions, actions, and how the others cofcofAdoraandShadowWeavercofcof have an impact on her because, well, SW it's after all, her mother figure and Adora is the most closest person to her.
Throughout this episode, I hoped that Catra & Scorpia could be happy. But at the end; my pity for Scorpia and hatred for Shadow Weaver skyrocketed. As for my emotions on Catra, they only grew more conflicted and more confused (and they wouldn't come to a resolution for quite a while).
I think it’s also because catra thinks once again shadoweaver chooses adora over catra not bright moon in general but shadoweaver even changes sides because of adora

Her breakdown moment this ep and in the following are important for understanding what she's going through! Her shifts are much more subtle/slower than Catras, and because she's good at seeming functioning people don't always notice, but boi she changes a lot over the series. It often isn't truly appreciated till rewatch, but I hope your able to pick up at least a bit!
season 4 is definetly rough on her to say the least without spoilers
@@nightnaughty oh definitely, but imo I think the whole series is. Season 4 to me feels like a build up of pressure that can't be ignored anymore, though is particularly devastating because well..... spoilers
Spoilers here:
It's the repeat of her cycles, but now with the hurt coming from the people she had came to see as safe. The people who were helping her heal, which make it hit far far harder. Especially when, like catra, after this finally she retreats so hard into old patterns. In this way she's so much like Catra, stuck in a cycle, and the season 4 loop truly hits hard on that front.
4:48 she literally shut up the entire bar and gave that perfect monologue…she’s obviously the strongest in the room
Seeing these two bi disasters losing their minds is always the highlight of my day 😂
hope you guys had fun and enjoy this episode because whats to come.. byebye power of friendship, hello trauma and depression
Scorpia:do you even know how to use a whip?
Catra:can be hard if this guy figured it out
EMOTIONAL DAMAGE
THIS EPISODE>>
the most feared people are afraid of catra, such a queen, and THE OUTFIT with leather jacket!!! OH MY GOD
im a simp for crimson waste catra 🙏
also she deserved that moment and to have a little of happiness fon once, tho it didn't last long :(
I'm currently watching S4 and she's starting to get on my last nerve 😭 i used to love her tho hhfddhh
@@pinkbarbie6966 Catra does have her own road to walk. It's long and harsh and sometimes hard to watch. But it does go somewhere in the end.
@@pinkbarbie6966 s4 is her rock bottom. don’t give up on her.
@@pinkbarbie6966 I don't know how many eps you are in but Catra is not the one you'll be screaming at 😭
@@BremenSA yes i can def see that 😭
Here we see Catra at her most awesome and also her scariest.
14:53 Catra went "ima put some dirt in your eye"
I was in SHAMBLES over the simp counter. This reaction was a real treat. Made my day. Definitely going to rewatch. X’D
Adora had the same experience finding out what parties are!
Ding ding !!
Nothing scarier than an angry cat
this season is a rollercoaster holy crap
i love ur guys’ content honestly! it makes my day so much better and i think you guys have some of the best discussion out of any reaction youtubers! been watching y’all’s shera reactions from the start! cant wait to continue this show w you guys
I absolutely love Mara and wish we got more of her
I'm surprised and kind of disappointed that they didn't discuss Mara more.
@@salyx spoilers
Yh I absolutely love the episodes she is in and is adds so much to the story and gives us context, if only they had normal lengths to s2,3 then we could get less fillers and more to the story
This entire arc is absolutely incredible and I'm so excited to see you continuing it!
I think what’s interesting is the design on Catra’a new jacket is interesting because it’s an ouroboros what is the symbol of life cycles/patterns and how history repeats itself.
I love how you both can simp over a animated cat together love yall
Feels like you've barely finished it and I'm already rewatching your reactions, they're just so entertaining. Plus, more Catra is never gonna be a bad thing.
Today the true antagonist was ✨abandonment issues!✨
11:26 Kenny genius counter 😃
I wonder if Kenny knows his anime memes well enough to put the Catra Simp Counter at "OVER 9000 !!!"
And that snap you heard was Catra's happiness breaking like a twig beneath a bulldozer.
This episode is a delight. This and the previous episode give me vibes from ATLA (The Library and The Desert) and LOK (The Stakeout and Long Live the Queen). Poor Catra though, they always find a new way to make her suffer.
It only gets better from here, I hope you can keep ‘em coming! 💜
This episode in a nutshell is depression for the first couple of minutes, Catra being a badass, and then depression again for the last few minutes
Someone who has nothing to loose is a very dangerous person
"Shadow weaver told me"
The sentence that killed angella
the way this is like the first and only time catras nice to scorpia
i cry
Catras outfit looks cleann🔥🔥
I sank ankle deep in quicksand in the mountains in northern CA when I was a kid (12 I think). I was nearby a tree with low hanging branches, and with another kid, so I was fine, but I can see it being dangerous to someone who wasn't paying attention.
4:23 I’m looking respectfully
Y'all really good at reading charachters. More on point than you imagine at some of the things you said.
Catra's tunnel vision after founding out about Shadow Weaver is one of my favorites, because of how greatly It portrays what's going on inside her. So painful, but great.
And now it's aaaall downhill
the scene where catra and scorpia go out, after the celebration, Noelle (shera's creator) says that scorpia kisses catra, she didn't put that in the drawing but says it's Cannon
up
up
SO excited for this ep! One of my all time faves of this show
09:11 pfft
13:42 I forgot how much I love
"Can't be that hard" "I think I'll be taking it" omg omg I forgot how much I absolutely love
CW! Catra
13:13 oh the exchanged glance
17:25 heh and not taking the darts out
I forgot how much I was dreading the the Shadoweaver reveal and the drop from happy party, thinking about staying and ruling with Scorpia, and just--tone drop, mental spiraling and dimming of senses
25:50 mmm
This episode is when Catra loses it. She's broken and hellbend on getting revenge crushing those who hurt her. I'm interested to see what Montana is going to see in Catra from her professional point of view
I think her rock bottom is 4x6 when a certain someone goes too
@@tiffanydlo.x Yes but this marks the start of her downwards spiral
Kenny! Love the video but also your sweater!! I'm jealous 😭
These reactions make me so happy :D can’t wait for all of them.
i can already see the catra simp counter going ↗↗
This finale is my favorite u guys r gonna love it i cant wait for ur reactions
antepenultimate is the word you were looking for, the one before the one before the last :)
The way Catra talks and acts in this episode is how I would bluff my school bullies after I snapped at some point after several years of non-stop bullshit. I wouldn't hurt anyone (not more than they hurt me), just made sure to scare trouble away the moment I spotted it.
2 Shera episodes a week would be amazing
One of the best episodes in s3
“Scorpia! A toast to Scorpia!”
*Screaming*
30 episodes left, 30 episodes of emotional rollercoasters
No because I relate to catra so much that this hurt to another level
You're starting to find out why Mara turned on the other First Ones. The story gets more intense from here. Buckle up.
The main theme starts to coalesce now: destiny/expectations versus self realization. Mara had to choose between the two, and so will Adora. I think the main theme is a meta-metaphor for coming out. That last part makes more sense when you see Adora's ultimate reward for the choice she makes.
At this point Adora should know not mention Shadow Weaver's name 😂😂😂 the instant triggering 😂😂😭
Catra: I am at the end of my rope and I am bringing all of you with me.
Ok but Catra's hissing face is so cute and not at all threatening
Kenny, love your shirt! Reminded me of Bolin as always.
I think it’s also because catra thinks once again shadoweaver chooses adora over catra not bright moon in general but shadoweaver even changes sides because of adora
Catra: Appreciates Scorpia
Montana: oh my god stop stop stop
Catra: We are going back
Montana: NO I TAKE IT BACK 😢😢😢
LETTS GO! I am so excited for you guys
