    AJ Michalka does an incredible job voicing Catra throughout the entire show, but she is genuinely *masterful* this episode. She manages to portray Catra's smugness when she returns to the Fright Zone, her sadness when confronting Shadow Weaver, and then her fury and madness in the rest of the episode, and she does it all perfectly.

    • @tomnorton4277

      I hate Catra but damn it, AJ Michalka is an amazing voice actress. Aside from Keston John (Hordak, Horde Prime, Wrong Hordak) and maybe Lorraine Toussant (Shadow Weaver) she's the best performer in this series, although I actually like Christine Woods (Entrapta) more because she grew into a fantastic voice actress instead of being one right from the start. Back on point, I almost wish AJ wasn't such a good actress because she actually made a toxic, violent, sadistic, manipulative sociopath sound sympathetic, to a point where I only realised how terrible Catra really is and how shitty her "redemption" was when I thought about the entire show with the context of hindsight.

    If Catra being abused for her entire life and learning that she almost died because Shadow Weaver manipulated her to go back to Adora wasn't enough for her to pull the switch, her seeing the people who are supposed to be "the good guys" holding hands and attacking her with the person that abused her her entire life was the tipping point. It's obviously not even close to the right decision, but seeing everything Catra went through, we can see why she does ultimately pull the switch.

      What makes it all a bit worse is that SW being with the 'good guys' also ruins any kind of sense Catra might have made of Adora's morality in a way that makes some truly awful implications seem kinda valid.
      The theory is that Adora left the Horde ( and Catra ) because she couldn't abide by the moral violations of the Horde. While this is our understanding it's not an unassailable theory from Catra's perspective because Adora didn't plan an escape after years of watching Catra's treatment, presumably a moral violation and in Promise they do manage to be on the same page when it comes to 'SW is terrible and Catra shouldn't have to deal with that' . So you get a somewhat altered theory that Adora left the Horde because she couldn't abide by the moral violations of the Horde and she saw a safe way out ( the sword ).
      Then SW joins the Brightmoon crowd with apparently no repercussions, certainly SW appears to be less a prisoner then Catra was during 'Ties that Bind' . To Catra SW is an ultimate source of moral violations, there may be others but she's 2nd to nobody in that, understandably. This pretty well bulldozes any understanding of Adora's reasons for leaving ( as this pattern of letting SW off lightly is extended even after the sword ) and instead leaves Catra with two devastating possibilities. A) Left Horde&Catra because she felt like it and none of it really meant much to her + lying. B) Moral violations are only such when they happen to OTHER people, when Catra's being mistreated it doesn't count, according to the side Adora joined and by extension according to Adora.
      I think this plays a pretty major role in how little hesitation Catra has towards doing the exact opposite of whatever Adora says.
      Not a good time for Catra.

When Glimmer defies her mom and makes a deal with Shadow Weaver everything says that it's a BAD choice: the lighting symbolism shows Glimmer step into the dark, Bow shakes his head, the music gets somber... Incoming overused praise of AJ and how she voices Catra so frickin well. But it’s so true! That “Adora is right…” and then the slide into that laugh… frick me. I love it.
    Just in case, Catra caught one of Bow’s arrows in her whip (not on purpose but still), and then slung it back at him and that’s how he got caught in goo. She used his own arrow against him.
    SW’s VA does have some of my favorite comedic deliveries in this show. Going from manipulating to “fine I guess you can come” in a split second was fantastic.
    “You made me this way, and you get to be the good guy?” That line always guts me. And the kicker is, SW hasn’t changed, she’s still not a good person even if she’s technically doing the “right” thing at the moment. As you said.

    Catra pulling the lever is probably the most-analyzed points in the series and one of its key pivot points, but I have a feeling the exact sequence of events is also often misremembered. The buildup is pretty complex, and it's not necessarily easy to keep track of which character has which information.
    This has led to a lot of people remembering it as "Catra was willing to destroy the world just so Adora isn't right", which isn't accurate. The thing is, the audience has all the information about the portal from Light Hope (which itself is misleading), from Mara, and from Entrapta's initial analysis in this episode.
    But Catra wasn't there for any of that. The only thing she knows about opening the portal is
    1) Adora telling her that it would bring the rest of the Horde, which would be good for her, or so she assumes.
    2) Entrapta telling her, in very brief and fairly ambiguous words, in the eleventh hour, and after Catra was already severely affected by the encounter with Shadow Weaver, that opening it would be bad somehow.
    Catra wasn't present for any of the world-ending warnings, and nobody told her about them. The only person who was present for Entrapta's analysis and in a position to stop Catra was...Scorpia, who doesn't say anything.
    So no, she actually wasn't intending to sacrifice everything, which is pretty clear when you look at her expression - not that of someone ready to end it all, but of someone who thought they had finally won.
    It's a really interesting situation and one that's often misunderstood, because the audience has so much more information than the characters.

      This episode is actually lousy with 'Catra bad because she should have known about something she didn't see' .
      The exchange between Adora and Entrapta suggests that Catra deliberately lied where her 'they abandoned you' theory is entirely reasonable with the information available to her.
      Beyond some of the technical who-heard-what stuff there's also the broader issue of Catra increasingly not being in her best mind since Adora revealed where SW was. I think her real crossing the Rubicon moment was actually zapping Entrapta and I think her own reaction to it speaks to that and even here it's fresh off an encounter with people invading the fright zone and giving her some volts. Once she did that 'for the mission' I don't think she has much leeway to back down later.

      @tomnorton4277 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would argue that Keston John is the best performer because of his ability to clearly distinguish Hordak from Horde Prime and Wrong Hordak. For example, listen to Hordak's reunion with Horde Prime. That is literally just Keston John talking to himself but you could swear that he's in the middle of a two sided conversation.
      But yes, Loraine Toussant is bloody amazing too. She always keeps you guessing about what Shadow Weaver is truly planning because even when she's saying something that could be beneficial to the good guys, you always get the sense that there's an ulterior motive behind it.
      The voice acting is one of the best things about this show. I think Christine Woods was the weakest member of the cast in Season 1 but by the time we reached Season 5, she had grown so much as a voice actress that she was able to carry the whole season on her shoulders whilst also firmly cementing Entrapta as the best character in the entire show. Even with Catra's dogshit "redemption" arc and Adora and Glimmer's character assassinations, AJ Michalka, Aimee Carrero and Karen Fukuhara still did their best to work with the shitty scripts, so I can't blame them for how badly their characters were written in Season 5.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again: Catra shocking Entrapta after she wants to tell Hordak about the implications of the portal is no accident: she does look shocked immediately after she tased her (as if she's surprised that she was capable of doing that to Entrapta) but she also does not want to lose again to Adora (which is a sentiment that guides all of her decisions in this episode), which indicates that this is partly just her acting on some built-up resentment against Entrapta and it is a way to get back at the latter for stealing the spotlight from her that she feels she has worked for all this time because she has wanted to be in Hordak's good graces for a long time and it's only once she realised that was no longer possible that she started dunking on him too. Entrapta had a meaningful relationship with Hordak without even trying and Catra kinda seems to resent her for that. When she hence tells Hordak that Entrapta betrayed them it's not just so he won't get mad at her for sending her to Beast island and to ensure that the portal is opened, it's also a way for her to hurt him the only way she can, namely emotionally, by destroying the one positive relationship he has.
    I will say that the show does an excellent job in terms of making the characters relatable enough that the audience knows why Catra's reaction here is what it is whilst making sure the audience knows that Catra's sad life is partly of her own making because she's essentially turning on everyone around her (the clear example would be Scorpia) and making choices that might feel good to her in this moment where she just wants to wreck everything but they ultimately just make things worse for everyone in the long-run, including herself because the implication is that the planet could cease to exist. Shadow Weaver being an abusive parent and tricking and abandoning her yet again is terrible but it is also not something that can excuse Catra's decisions here because she's essentially getting so angry at everything that she no longer cares if the world goes to hell and she makes that big decision at the end because she knows it is exactly what Adora does not want to see happen and hence she decides to act out of spite.
    This is all very intriguing to me and just goes to show what exceptional characters the showrunners were able to turn some of these characters into.

    • @nenakarra2579
      @nenakarra2579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @Isis Jenkins Nope.
      With no Shadow Weaver almost killing Catra, Catra would have been in her quarters like in the beginning of the episode. It'd all be in Hordak and Entrapta's hands, as it was originally planned. They'd have to decide what to do. Maybe Entrapta would have convinced Hordak and Catra to wait until they can find a different way.
      Then later Angella would have likely launched her carefully thought out plan and save Adora with no teenagers going gang-ho in the military base, causing chaos.

      @@nenakarra2579 That's true. Without Glimmer and gang rushing in, Adora still would have convinced Entrapta to look into the risks of opening the portal. Catra would still not be in a great place, but she wouldn't be on the warpath like she was after being triggered by Shadow Weaver. Without Catra stopping Entrapta from speaking to Hordak about the risks of opening a portal, I think Entrapta would have convinced Hordak to hold off until they are sure that the portal won't destroy the world (as we see earlier in the episode, Hordak isn't exactly opposed to him and Entrapta taking their time to get it "perfect").

I originally took that as nothing but a plain childhood trauma metaphor. Now that I know Stevenson is trans, I can't help going back through the series the same way I went back through the Matrix trilogy, wondering if I missed signs of a trans allegory in Catra or even in Adora, whose transformations to become the hero she imagines everyone values her for being sure could have trans elements to them.

      Glimmer lost a parent to the Horde at a very young age, and her relationship to authority is a complicated one. Characters exist to fulfil a narrative purpose, and it's very silly to go on hating a character for having flaws and making a bad decision at the behest of a serial manipulator. I for one will never understand the need to point fingers at fictional flawed teenagers and yell "Bad person! Bad person! Bad person!"

    • @smiddlehurst1
      @smiddlehurst1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CharlotteSWeb-oh7ou Uh... that last part may be a *tiny* bit of an over-reaction? Let me be absolutely clear about this: every single character in this entire show is very, very well realised. There are always motivations behind what they do and their actions are usually consistent. It's why I am a huge champion for it despite being a long way outside of its target demographic. However Glimmer is, *in my opinion*... not living up to her potential. Shall we put it that way? This is going to be way too long, sorry, but I think it's worth delving into.
      Yes, she looses her father to the Horde. This absolutely sucks and would cause quite a few mental health issues. But she is clearly loved by her mother, has every opportunity to learn how to be a good leader and, indeed, princess (I won't say Queen as she thinks that'll never happen owing to the whole immortal mom thing) and *doesn't take them*. It's that which makes her grate, at least for me, the frustration that she could be so much more but chose this path. In fact by the time we get here she's actively gotten worse as a commander compared to S1 where she at least tried to convince others her plan was worth doing. She has critical information, sure, and she's worried about her friend... but her mom / queen / CO is absolutely right. There's no plan at all and she makes terrible choices throughout this episode which, though unintentional, play a significant factor in Catra pulling that switch. She doesn't even *try* to engage with anyone else and just charges ahead despite two seasons (2 + 3 are clearly one season split so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt here) showing her that this is usually a terrible idea.
      Worse than that, she begins to show worrying signs of getting seduced by power (much like her father in fact). Watch that Shadow Weaver scene again. Glimmer is rightfully cautious as this is a terrible idea but what convinces her to try it? Not a promise to rescue Adora but the lure of finding out how much more powerful she can be. It's in service of saving her friend, yes... but that's a very dangerous road to travel and she really ought to know better at this point.
      But here's the thing.... I say all that to illustrate why I really hate that character in this moment but also it's absolutely *right* for the show. In many ways Glimmer is the mirror of Catra. One brought up in a life of abuse and torment with even love being considered a finite resource. One brought up in luxury with all of the advantages she could wish though with a wound between her and her mother that neither deal with particularly well. In the harsh light of day both tend to make bad decisions that could end disastrously. Both are attracted to power though for slightly different reasons. Catra sees power as key to her own safety and survival, Glimmer more to protect the kingdom at least as she sees that role (hi Thor, didn't see you there). And here, really for the first time, we see those roads come together at a critical moment and the results are.... to be revealed in the next episode! (Spoilers and all that ;-) )
      Glimmer's journey is often overlooked because, well, she's one of the heroes, right? We're conditioned to assume that reckless decisions are just bravery when it comes from those wearing white hats. Or, umm, those who sparkle in this case. But in truth you really can delve into Glimmer almost as much as you can Catra or Adora and, as with most well realised characters, their decisions often aren't the right ones. Sometimes in small ways, sometimes in large but - and again this is IMO - dismissing them does a disservice to the tremendous work put in to realise such complex characters in the first place and cheapens their journey considerably.

    As a kids show we know the good ones ultimately win, so I did had a pleasure moment of Catra getting a win amongst SW fucking her up for so long. Even SW saying there was no way bc she was too weak, Catra still got this win😭💀 i celebrated knowing ultimately the good ones win

    THE WHOLE SHOW SO FAR APPLIES TO TWO SENTENCES : ,,PEOPLE ALWAYS TRY TO DESTROY WHAT THEY CAN`T CONTROL!" - The She-ra`s, Horde prime soldiers, Catra from Shadoweaver...
    and ,,YOU SHOULDN`T BE ASHAMED THAT YOU AREN`T PERFECT, IMPERFECTIONS MAKE PROGRESS POSSIBLE!" and the fact that there is no such thing as ,,perfections" gives opportunity for eternal progress.
