@@ramywiles EXACTLY. Yes, Catra made bad-hell, AWFUL choices-with major consequences, but the root of it all wasn’t pure evil. It was pain, a desire to prove herself, fear of getting hurt, survival, abusive upbringing, to make Adora feel the pain she feels, and suffering from others’ mistakes or choices. None of Catra’s motives are from the ‘I’m so bad and evil muahahahaha’.
She just wants to feel important, respected, loved, and in control. And she’s had to fight for all of that, just going about it the wrong ways. True, many of her actions mirror how Shadow Weaver treated her (manipulation) but as Montana has stated many times before, it’s the cycle of abuse.
People who look at Catra’s actions from the surface and are like ‘She’s bad! I hate her! She’s irredeemable!’ Just don’t understand her character and story at all. And that’s a shame, because she is such an interesting and complex character who comes with compelling arcs.

Catra finally standing up to Hordak (even though it was kind of pointless in the end) was so great because she didn't say a single lie. While Hordak was doing experiments in his lab Catra was leading the entire Horde and all of their advances were made thanks to Catra. If it weren't for her, the Horde would have been defeated by the Rebellion as soon as Adora had defected.

I have to give it to Aimee for her voice acting this episode. “Don’t I get a say in this? Don’t I get a choice?” Like, ow. Like Aimee has been good up until this point, and had some real fun deliveries (2x07) (1x06), but this is the first episode I was like… oh. I felt that.
And yeah, Montana is right. We saw it with Catra a couple episodes ago. SW still knows how to get under these girls’ skins. Using Adora’s kindness and Catra’s validation seeking, it’s child’s play for someone like SW.
Small detail that didn’t get too much attention, but I love that Angela has basically adopted Adora at this point and is super protective. When she told SW that she’d put Adora through enough and therefore would not let SW see her… I got all warm inside.
And yes, Catra calling out Hordak was a moment and I love it. She’s got nothing left to lose why bother begging, you know? Truly, a queen. A self destructive queen. But a queen nonetheless.

"Don’t I get a choice?" - oh, yes that hit me hard. She is amazing voice actress. Her comedic timing uplifted many lines. But if we going with the heavy stuff, than her quiet "No, it will work..." also deserves some praise.

while we're listing favorite Aimee Carrero lines, can I also add (spoilers):
"I didn't make you pull the switch. I didn't make you do _anything_ ! I didn't break the world, but I am going to fix it. And you? You made your choice. NOW LIVE WITH IT!"
also, the really quiet "She-Ra's gone" in the S4 finale :(
and "you miscalculated," which has of course become a meme thanks to the ATLA reference, but like the line delivery was also badass in itself hahah

I love how, in general, animators on this show noticed slight changes in intonations alot of times with conflicted emotions and reflect it in character expressions. So many lines stuck with me. Adora would be an interesting character even if she wasn't a main one thanks to Aimee unique delivery.
p.s. I wasn't familiar with the cast of this show, didn't know how any of them looked irl. And so the first interview I watched broke my brain. I didn't expect that voice to came out of the actress that could easily play life action version of Catra. They look like they swapped bodies or something)

It's less cool knowing that the only reason she said that was because she had nothing left to lose; Catra would've never dared to speak to Hordak like that if she wasn't literally about to be killed by him. Her lips were trembling as she mustered up the courage to come out and say it.
A lot of people seem to underestimate the capabilities of Hordak, partially because we only see what he's been doing in the modern day, which is but a tiny fraction of his conquering life on just Etheria, let alone the rest of the universe before that. People don't seem to grasp that it was Hordak who crushed the first Princess Alliance (including Queen Angella and King Micah), which was arguably stronger than the current Princess Alliance (minus She-Ra of course), and from then until Season 2, the only thing that had been preventing his complete conquest of Etheria was the vast Whispering Woods blocking his forces from marching on Bright Moon. And that's not even taking into account the fact that Hordak has (SPOILERS) literally conquered and enslaved entire *_galaxies_* back when he was second-in-command of the Galactic Horde Empire.
In comparison to Hordak's, Catra's accomplishments are rather minuscule. And it's not like Catra has ever been able to truly defeat that "group of teenagers" either. Imagine it from Hordak's perspective: going from the second-in-command of the most powerful space-faring empire in the history of the universe, to being stranded on a primitive planet with only the remains of his crashed warship to work with, and despite all that still managing to single-handedly use nothing but those scraps and his own ingenuity to build a globe-spanning empire, manipulating the natives into serving him and training them to become an army that would help him successfully conquer most of the planet, AND THEN, some ungrateful cat-girl whom you personally pulled up from nothing, shielded her from the unfair treatment of her commanding officer, showed favour towards her over said officer on MULTIPLE occasions, rewarded her with the position of most power besides his own, decides to then talk back to you while you were punishing her for failures that were ENTIRELY her fault. Anyone would be mad in his position.
No, Hordak does not _"need"_ Catra in order to beat the heroes, he never did. Nor does he need Entrapta in the long run - Catra said as much herself in Season 4. The reason he couldn't get his portal machine to work in the beginning wasn't because of any fault in the scientific theory on his part, it was simply that in all his work on the rest of the device, he overlooked the fact that the cables from his wrecked ship had become uninsulated and therefore couldn't hold the charge. Eventually, he would've found the fault and continued as normal. While Hordak may have been doing experiments for most of the series rather than commanding the Horde directly in battle, those experiments are ultimately the bigger picture in this war rather than the actual fighting. And Hordak has literally been commanding the Horde in battle for _decades_ before Catra was even born, and as a result, the vast majority of the Horde's advances were made by him. Can you blame him for leaving the military operations to servants such as Shadow Weaver and Catra to focus on his "true plans" (as Shadow Weaver said) after years of being probably the single greatest warlord in the history of the universe besides Horde Prime himself?
So essentially, there were indeed quite a few lies in Catra's "little speech", as Hordak put it.

I watched s3 and still stand by that statement so djfjfj. She was reaching her true breaking point. But still, she did it all out of her rage of abandonment towards her love that she constantly was rejected by others. All that said, she wasn’t a good person, but she wasn’t being a villain either. She did out of her trauma rather than truly wanting to *just* see others suffer. A villain that got a redemption arc was Hordak. He genuinely never cared until later. Catra's resentment for Entrapta grows, if you look closely. Entrapta "saved her" from Beast Island, BUT only to send her to ANOTHER death trap. In Catra's mind, Entrapta is only using her to get what she wants (tech) while basking into Hordak's favoritism, a favoritism Catra FOUGHT HARD to gain. Remember what she told Adora? "You never protected me! Not in a way that would get you into Shadow Weaver's bad side!" And that Adora used her. This is history repeating itself, Entrapta "protects her" without getting into Hordak's bad side while Catra is again the whipped child. The abuser simply has changed from Shadow Weaver to Hordak and Adora has changed to Entrapta.
Without Entrapta intending any of it of course.

absolutely!! thank you for saying this because this parallel is such an important part of seasons 2 and 3, giving an explanation for the Hordeside events in the rest of this season and the whole of NEXT season (with Entrapta in s4 instead being the Adora to Hordak's *Catra* while the real Catra is infuriated by how much he reminds her of herself), yet it gets largely ignored in discussions of Catra's processing of her abuse and her really unhealthy relationships to Entrapta and Hordak.
And yet, like how Catra eventually got tired of Shadow Weaver and was able to usurp her..... Hordak has just shown that he is able to genuinely be influenced by Entrapta. Even though she had an outburst that embarrassed him greatly, he didn't give Catra the super hard punishment in front of all his troops, like he should have done if he wanted to keep control. He instead caved to Entrapta's idea, putting some control over HIM in her hands.
And Catra really, really wants that control.
      [season 4 comments]
Just like Shadow Weaver was responsible for creating the monster of her own downfall, Hordak is responsible for creating his.
But Catra cannot sustain that power theft. She cannot keep the power Entrapta had, because they are based on completely opposite foundations - friendship vs fear - and Catra loses what power she already had over what she does to Entrapta, and the person she becomes in season 4.
Entrapta's been there for like 1 year but has basically destroyed the Horde from the inside and hasn't realised it yet. It's a timebomb, and nobody can defuse it. She did so purely through making connections to others. It's incredible.

Catra has literally changed my life too much for me to be unbiased in talking about her, but I'm genuinely really grateful to hear you guys talk about her outwardly cruel response to Scorpia as her method of conveying the pain and protectiveness she's really feeling. For a show that is as emotionally deep as She-Ra is, I think some fans can be way too quick to ignore the emotions at play behind the actions they want to critique. Like, this is ultimately Catra telling Scorpia that she's looking out for her and doesn't want her to get hurt, and at this point, we have ample setup for why she does that in a way that sounds like her lashing out. And no, it's not healthy that this is the route she takes! But like... can we trust that that is indeed the point and not a writing oversight?

    • @bellac6311

i think snapping at someone who is literally following you to their death gets a pass. like, girl, shes trying to save you! you are actively putting yourself in danger and she doesnt want that for you!

    • @tipsy634
      @tipsy634 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

What's really sad about this is, after that scene, Scorpia starts to see Catra's lashing out as her way of showing love.... because it WAS, that one time, but now, every later instance, she just thinks Catra's being a tsundere, when that's no longer the case.
it's not until she's forced to confront that catra has hurt people for her own gain, is willing to destroy and end the lives of those she calls her friends, that scorpia realises enough is enough.

    *Original Series Lore Spoilers*
I doubt anything I say here will spoil this series as they've already changed a lot.
So I have no idea what this show is doing with the lore and where it is going, but Adora being from another world is true to the character's origins. The 'First Ones' was never a thing before to the best of my knowledge, but Adora was stolen by Hordak from the planet Eternia and was prince Adam's (He-Man) twin sister. Fun fact, this also makes her half Earthling as Queen Marlena was originally an astronaut from Earth. I'd be happy to hit you with some more OG fun facts if you guys are interested!

Wow, Kenny's predictions were really on point. From Shadow Weaver saying "I have valuable/vital information about the Horde" to Adora being a First One.
Poor Adora though. She had a rough time in this episode. First she has to face her abuser and doesn't seem quite ready for it, then she finds out that she's a First One who was stolen from her home, and then finally Light Hope tells her that it was her destiny to find the sword, which probably makes it seem like the choices she made were meaningless and predestined.

Had she tried to leave with Catra, there's no indication the horde has anything that could have stopped them. Unless Scorpia was staying behind?
That said, it's a nice juxtaposition for Catra to manipulate Scorpia into keeping her in prison for Scorpia's safety, just after Shadow-weaver manipulated Catra to escape leaving Catra to take the fall.
