When enough of you keep asking me for the SAME THING I try to listen...so here we go; Steam Deck coverage! But of course this is a retro gaming channel so it's not like we are going to talk about modern PC Gaming on the Steam Deck...we are going to talk about retro emulation...more specifically Gameboy Advance emulation!

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Steam Deck; Valve's new Nintendo Switch competitor that could
On today's Steam Deck video I will go over how to get Game Boy Advance games running on your Steam Deck via EmuDeck 2 and RetroArch. MGBA is an amazing emulator and the Steam Deck is an amazing piece of hardware...but there are some extra steps here!
But if you follow the process you will get your Gameboy Advance emulation up and running on the Steam Deck in no time!
Again I recommend getting a Dock for your Steam Deck as the process is MUCH easier that way!
But the Steam Deck is proving to be an amazing retrogaming handheld video game emulation machine and I love it!

mGBA Dev had a great blog post recently about the project’s 10th anniversary; awesome emulator
Hard to believe it’s been ten years. Time just flies by lately it seems
I really appreciate these SteamDeck vids. Thanks again. I've tried several ways of running emulators and have decided that my current favorite method is RetroDeck. EmuDeck and Batocera, the art scraping is just a little lackluster right now. RetroDeck seems to get the artwork I'm looking for (region specific) the easiest compared to the others. Cheers!
Cover art scraping is always hit or miss. It’s been like that forever and it never seems to improve 🤷🏻♂️ glad you enjoy the vids! Plenty more coming
And the thumbnail has the best GBA game showing 😮
haha gotta have Castlevania. When I think GBA I think Metroidvania. I have all three GBA games on my shelf still from the day I purchased them new
@@VideoGameEsoterica I got rid of my carts (gutted)
I do have a fake AliExpress double pack though 😂😔😭
Luckily I was smart enough not to trade them in. Full set of GBA and DS stuff still
I am not perfect though. I did sell a CIB US Dracula X like 15 years ago for like $40 so…oops
Thanks got DBZ Legacy of Goku 2 running perfectly.
Glad it helped!
Great guide! Worked for me. Thank you.
Glad it helped :)
Your channel is awesome. Im not sure if you've done this but a video on setting the deck up with a crt TV would be a good video idea. I usually play with a an old toshiba TV and its awesome emulating stuff on there. Going to play symphony of the night and earthbound next never played either...
I’m working on it. It’s NOT easy. I’ve been testing but I haven’t gotten an image on VGA or CRT that I’d say is great. The quest continues!
Love these vids.
So glad you so :)
i love the steam deck so much. it's one of my favourite consoles of all time!!
It’s the handheld of ultimate possibilities. Like it’s possible one day I’ll play something modern on it 😂
@@VideoGameEsoterica haha yeah. Have you tried Into The Breach? or Horizon Zero Dawn? Those are real bangers honestly. But it also runs classics like Crazy Taxi.
I played Horizon on PlayStation
Hi, great video. Exactly what I was looking for. Looks so good on the OLED. Can you tell me what video shaders you are using?
Thanks
I believe this was just stock but it’s been awhile since I made the video so my memory is foggy
@@VideoGameEsotericaNo worry. Thansk again 🙂
The GBA is fantastic on the Steam Deck. I tend to emulate all the handhelds in handheld mode, it feels more authentic. That was one thing that annoyed me about handheld emulation with previous devices on a big tv, it never felt right. Now I have the best of both worlds, consoles on the tv and handhelds in handheld mode, I love it!!
Yes seeing a handheld system on a tv is like watching a giant blockbuster film on your phone…sure it’s the same content but the delivery method is all wrong
Which dock are you using? I didn’t see the link in the description. Thank you!
Must’ve forgotten link. JSAUX
I put my roms in the GBA folder and select mGBA in Steam Rom Manager in EmuDeck , the roms show up in Emulation Station but when try to start the game it's saying RetroArch emulator is messing . So which folder to put the GBA rom files for mGBA ?.
You have them in the right folder. Should work
Sorry if this is dumb, but how do you open the menu like you did at around 5:42?
All the hot key shortcuts are in emudeck. You can look them up there (as I’ve now forgotten lol)
For some reason, the parser for Mgba on my Emudeck is not working. I can't emulate more gba games if the parser's not working. The ones I have already loaded up are working just fine.
I enabled the mgba parser, but when I clicked preview, it doesn't show up. Does anyone know how to solve this?
Would you mind answering how to configure tilt mechanics for games like Warioware Twisted and Kirby Tilt n Tumble? Great video, thanks!
I’ll consider a part 2 video :)
Would also love this! 🤞
I’ll look into it
I'm sorry if you address this in the video but can you play multiplayer Game Boy on Steam Deck?
That’s not something I’ve tested yet personally
Finally got a steam deck for early bday and father's day emudeck is up for install just one more game of vampire survivors...
Welcome to the club! It’s such a fun device
I have mGBA on my PC and a game there already. In the folders, there are multiple files that seem important such as cheats, saves (sav), save states (ss), and the game itself. Am I able to drag and drop them into the steam deck mGBA folder and call it good?
Yep should be fine to copy them over
How do you get that menu core options open
The audio on mine is so bad! Any suggestions.
Bad how? Clipping? Muffled?
The GBA has so many great games. Metroid Zero Mission is a masterpiece!
It’s a stacked library for sure
So, is there any news to get VBA-M working too?
Haven’t tried personally yet
Do you happen to know if it’s possible to do local multiplayer with GBA games using this emulator?
I haven’t seen an option but I haven’t looked too hard
There is some multiplayer option but I cant get it to work properly. Right now it's like steam family sharing where it shows the same game/view on both Decks instead of each Deck having its own version of the game running which is what I intended.
I’d have to look into dual Deck gameplay. Not sure if it’s a possibility
@@VideoGameEsoterica Please do, I would really appreciate the tutorial because I'm missing something.
I’ll look into it
"you need to own the games" 🤣
….. 😉
I've been trying to set this up and most of the games run but there's a few that just don't work, Minish Cap for example, it runs on desktop mode, but not from gaming mode so is obviously the rom isn't the problem, any advise? thank you!
Try booting it from within RetroArch and not just the shortcut on deck. See if that works
I haven’t seen that issue so I’d have to look into it
how do you bring up the core options menu in the game
All the shortcuts for all the emulators are listed in the emudeck app on desktop mode under that emulators menu
how do you access the quick menu mid gameplay?
Check emudeck on desktop mode. All emulators have a settings menu that tell you all the hot keys for that emulator
GBA emulator runs in desktop mode, but won't launch games in game mode I’m so confused on how to fix this
Reset emulator config in emudeck desktop app and see if that fixes it
How to open retroarch options?
Double click both analog sticks
My games are not launching for some reason from Steam, they work fine from the emulator at Desktop Mode but not in Steam.
Any fix for this? Thanks!
Reset emulator configs in desktop mode in emudeck and try again
@VideoGameEsoterica I try that but it didn't work, however I manage to figure it out. I was using GBA Settings for RetroArc when I did the Parse thing, updated that to mGBA Standalone and it worked. It was a mistake on my part.
But thanks for the video and feedback.
Always happy to help. Or in this instance try lol
I need help... i tried to launch a GBA game in the gaming mode part of the deck, but it won't open
Does it launch on desktop mode?
@VideoGameEsoterica nevermind, I figured it out, I switched different emulators for the emudeck. Now what I need to know is the emulator's controls, like saving/loading states and configuring, etc.
Look at emudeck on desktop mode. It’ll show you all the hot keys per emulator if you go in and look at individual emulator settings
I don't see the EmuDeck Github page link in the description. Am I blind?
Or I missed the copy and paste : github.com/dragoonDorise/EmuDeck
Can you play Warioware with motion control?
I haven’t personally tested but you can enable gyro controls via emudeck so I don’t see why not
How do I open menu in midgame ??
All the menu shortcuts are listed in the emudeck app under the individual emulators
Disappointing that you didn't show any footage of the GBA games on the machine itself (like, on the screen). Seeing things like aspect ratio and how well the screen is filled matters too
Just not something I tend to do; I don’t really enjoy shooting screens. Never looks good IMO
How can I disable retro arch achievements?
Go back into emudeck setup on desktop mode
@@VideoGameEsoterica it continues to re enable it without a password even. I am just going to reset.
I’d have to look then. I don’t have it enabled on mine so I’ve never had to turn it off. Isn’t there an account? Perhaps log out
Really disappointed you didn't talk about controls. I launched my mgba through Retroarch just like you, and the radial menu for save state, load state, speed up, etc just doesn't work. Seems completely broken. Was truly hoping you'd have some insight there, but sadly, all I learned here today was integer scaling and color correction. Nice, but, in my opinion, you didn't touch on the MOST FRUSTRATING part of the entire emulator experience : configuring controls. Game controls and hotkeys. (save state, speedup, etc)
PS. don't change setting after launching a game in Retroarch, your changes won't stick. You have to launch Retroarch standalone, change settings, then exit for them to stick. Once you're happy, THEN launch a game. It's a nuisance, but this was the only way I could get it so I didn't have to configure every time.
Emudeck sets the controls up before you even launch the emulator. You should not have to set them up
@@VideoGameEsoterica It set up the very basic of default controls which do not feel good for many games, or it didn't set up any at all. It's not simply a "oh press a button and it will all work nicely" kind of deal. There is lots of work to be done to have controls proper. Dealing with the buggy version of Retroarch on the steam deck is incredibly annoying for a $500+ device. I've used Retroarch in Vita, Wii U, PC, and now steam deck. The steam deck version has been by far the worst to deal with, and the least spoken about.
Dunno what to say. Not the experience I or others have had 🤷🏻♂️
If you still want to give it a try, I had the exact same issue. Problem was that the game launched through the mgba core of Retroarch, using Emudeck you want it to launch through the standalone mgba core. This would make the touchpad radial menu work!
Good to know
A few asterixes 😂 and hopefully obelixes too
Haha nice
"If you open the menu" This would have been helpful to say how you access the menu as its not intuitive.
From the wagners techtalk tutorial:
Enter RetroArch Menu - Many of the emulators/cores utilize RetroArch. To enter the RetroArch menu press L3 + R3 (push in on both Joysticks).
What the fuck my Steam ROM Manager doesnt look anything like that
Have you updated recently?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Got the Deck two weeks ago
Maybe they updated it in the last few weeks and like looks diff? I’ll have to check
@@VideoGameEsoterica Could you try and see if you can get Tetris on NES to work in the Steam library? I can't?
I dunno when I’ll get a chance but I’ll try and remember :)
First
You win ten VGE points; redeem 100k for free arcade candy
Way too complicated, uses terms you have to learn before watching the video. Dislike
Why not just add the entire gb gbc and gba libraries? Is there a limit on it?
No limit. But on video that giant file list looks like a mess. It’s easier IMO to show you how to do something by showing you less files all at once
Makes you wonder why Valve don't just do this themselves and do a subscription system like Nintendo does with the Switch. But the leg up with Steam Deck’s subscription is that you get access to all games of all time rather than JUST Nintendo. So there they can charge a lot more than Nintendo. Guess they hate money. Soft modding for me it is
Licensing nightmare. That’s why
