My dad had an R8 v8 manual for more then 11 years. Sold 2 years ago with about 70.000km experience. Did 304km/h on the German autobahn and lots of >290km/h’s back in the day. Last couple of years getting to these speeds was getting harder and harder (at the Autobahn close to our border). Car is more stable at high speeds then my 991.2 C4S.
Reliable “supercar” without any big issues. Great driving experience and the looks are still as good as it was when the car was released. Only issue my dad had was paint falling of the paint at the sideskirts under the sideblades. Was solved under guarantee.
Maintenance and wear items were the only thinks. Offcourse this still makes it an expensive car, but cheap when comparing it to an Ferrari or Lambo of (back then) the same value (360 / Gallardo).

Manual, v8, 8k plus redline. So good.
Wow, zero rev hang + light flywheel does miracles with manual gearbox. You need to be quick with that stick to actually don't undershoot the engaging revs during upshifts. That's really precious behavior even by mid 2000's standards.
That gated manual with that V8 was a match made in heaven.. I prefer its sound over the V10

I LOVE a gated shifter. The sound... 🖤 some sound like a bolt action rifle. Then if you add a Supercharger... I have no fitting words to describe it

This is/was the last car to ever have a gated manual if I recall. truly an underrated car, 6 speed gated manual with 8500rpm screamer of a V8 :)

I just love how "mechanical" this car sounds. The shifter and motor sound are awesome. Not fast by today's standards but cars like this are all about feel.

I have driven both the V8 and the V10 of this car and while it’s hard to beat the awesome power of the V10, the V8 has its own charm about it. And especially in a manual, it would probably be my choice.

There really is nothing like driving a manual car. To drive one with a gated gear shift is more visceral and connects the driver with the car in the most basic and primal way.

This is how you take off the carbon on the pistons. Wish our roads could be like this and taxi drivers actually drive like proper people here in South Africa. Our limit here is 120kph but that hasn't stopped me from testing a car to the limits 😂 fastest I've driven was 310 speedo speed on a Honda Blackbird. Been almost arrested a few times in my turbo cars but at least here we bribe the traffic officer with a kfc family bucket 😂😂🇿🇦🇿🇦🇮🇹 Greetings from South Africa. Hopefully one day I can visit Germany and rent a 993 twin turbo Porsche and go test my ultimate favorite Porsche

It's crazy how much better the road awareness and discipline is in Germany. People are way too dumb here in NZ.

Is there anything more than just the gates to these gated shifts? Is that just there to make it easier to navigate? I mostly drive stick for over 30 years and never used a gated one. How it feels different than a normal stick with properly tight links but no gates?

Driving it like you stole it 😂😬! I was fortunate to drive one of these a few years ago, although not quite as hard as your colleague. However, I did get the rear end out around a few corners 👍. A very playful chassis, along with a great sound to that V8 👌!
Manual launches are so cool
If you can find a Maserati 3200 gt to do a test, I had it old and improved close to 500 HP and it was pretty good.

I definitely understand, speed where you can actually enjoy it while not being super fast to where the point it’s just “oh fun!” for a bit and then boom it’s kinda eh. This is enjoyable!

Great vid but car is to short on gear ratios lots of new cars rely on high revs to send them up to high speeds give me a wide ratio gearbox any day flat torque curve .new cars have lost the 80s and 90s feel when accelerating its all revs its that low down torque wide ratio that i miss thats why i own a e46 328¡ 5 speed not the fastest car but pleasing
