Salt Water Flooded Trans Am Is Finished! We Restored a Flood 1973 Firebird from Hurricane Ian

  • Most of you remember the flooded Trans Am we bought from Hurricane Ian. She is back and 99 percent finished! We went through the whole car, replacing mostly just the wiring and a few smaller items. We were told the car is totaled, never should be fixed, and will rust away. We love proving people wrong and this video shows how well this car has turned out.

    Buy the book written by Cliff Ruggles on how to reman the Q-Jet for your specific engine. Even a factory motor can benefit from the proper setup and tuning for the motor. Cliff is a great guy and will help/answer questions you have. If you don't want to learn yourself then you can have him build your carb for your motor.

    I am really impressed by the final result of this bird. I remember all the water in that engine and I thought it would need a rebuild for sure. Great job on reviving this ol gal. Wonder how many hours went into getting it to where is it now.

    You did a very good job. I've owned a 70 and 74 Firebird. Both handled extremely well. I heard once that when a Firebird went down the assembly line people were added just for the suspension. Those also look badass with Hooker sidepipes. GM screwed up big time when they dropped the Pontiac line. Hey I hope you have a fantastic racing season, won't be long till it starts. Take care be safe.

    It's the wiring that rots out. You will need to replace every wire eventually.

    If you are going to use the car primarily for burnouts have you considered putting a proportioning valve on the brake system? Turn the bias 100% to the front when you want to do burnouts (cheap line lock) and then turn it back when you are driving it normally. 😉

    To add to Phillips' comment about the shifting. When I put my back drive rods in my 73 Z-28 it also was a little tight in the column when shifting into gear. The lower column bushing was shot and needed replaced.

      @@HorsepowerDepot The first-year nobody even ran in the twelves.. now they have 1150 cutoff.. there for a few years they had a certification certificate you could get by doing NHRA stock eliminator type care down .

    • @jerrywhaley6397
      @jerrywhaley6397 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well maybe it's time to go back up there and tell them . In your Arnold Schwarzenegger voice "I'll be back" lmao 🏁

    • @HorsepowerDepot
      @HorsepowerDepot  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could never get by their 11.50 cut off after they decided to go with that. We’ve gone through every tech, tore engines down in the pits at Stanton to prove its stock. Something no one else has done. They put the 11.50 rule in due to “safety” and not wanting cars to go that fast, but won’t let anyone run with a roll bar that is an actual safety item. We won’t be back.

    • @jerrywhaley6397
      @jerrywhaley6397 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you decided you will not be taking the trans am at all? That car could run in the 13 s range that would be cool.. just by looking at it it's definitely a 14-second car

    Back in the fall of 1973 we took a high school field trip to Norwood , OHIO to tour the Camaro/Firebird assembly plant.
    I remember it well. The plant closed about 1989. Norwood had a very good assembly quality rating by GM.
    The production was moved to Van Nuys , Commiefornia.
    Van Nuys had the absolute worst quality of all GM plants. For years. GM strikes again.
    A buddy worked for a dealership after all production was moved to Van Nuys.
    The stories of the garbage cars coming from Van Nuys is quite astounding.
    One memorable car was a Camaro on one side and a Firebird on the other.
