Jatindranath Das, the guy on deathbed, fasted unto death. He was protesting against deplorable conditions and partial treatment of Indian political prisoners by British Officials. His fast lasted 63 days before his body gave up on his willpower. 63 goddamned days! Turning point of freedom struggle.

This song shows their "63 days fast unto death". Jatin Das died during the fast. Only after that Britishers heed to their demands. Bhagat Singh is an emotion in India. Everyone loves him but very few know about him.

Rick, about the composition, this song is composed in raag Desh (Desh = country). In Indian classical music, we have various raag or ragas, which evoke certain emotions. For example, raag Bhageshri is a late night raag that is sung while yearning for a lover.
Not to take away from the brilliance of AR Rahman, but credit also goes to the Indian music system, in which raag Desh is used for patriotic songs and also for songs on rain and romance.
EDIT: Our national song Vande Mataram is also composed in raag Desh.

Jana gana Mana is technically composed in Sorath but that is also a Des group raag that was more ancient than Des i.e. old form of Des.
The revolutionaries used music to keep themselves motivated. In Bhagat Singh's biography "Without fear" their singing patriotic songs is mentioned many times. Bhagat Singh's Autobiography compiled from his diary and other writings like his jail notebook is a must read. The bravery of that young man fighting the mighty British empire and not wavering once, even in the face of death will bring tears to your eyes.

Bhagat Singh, along with other inmates, demanded the status of 'political prisoners' and other basic amenities in jail. One of the revolutionaries, Jatin Das martyred on the 63rd day of the strike. Bhagat Singh was just 23 when he was executed, he was India most famous revolutionists freedom fighters, while in jail he fought for prison reform for political prisoners. till his last breath he loved his country over life, we as Indians are proud and inspired by him. i think his ideology and patriotism would inspire any person who loves their country. the fact that he achieved more in such a short life time the most people do their whole life puts me in awe of him.

@@janardhankamble5585 Exactly. I simply couldn't watch this movie. It doesn't have the same feel as Shaheed. One of the songs in shahed - pagdi smbhaal jatta pagdi sanbhaal re - was a favorite song of mine.

The amount of torture you have to inflict on people to generate this kind of will. To fast for over 2 months and die. And that too when you are everyday tied to ice slabs in cold winters and then mercilessly wiped, when thick dirty pipes are inserted through your noses and mouth to put food into you while being continuously beaten and what not and when certainly you know you will be hanged in the end. All this in their teens and early 20’s. The cause has to be so big.
Yes most of those were so young..
They had accepted death, their only solace was that they'd live in the soil of this incredible country. In the fragrance of the crops and the breaths of the future generations. Everyday I ponder whether I'm doing justice to that sacrifice and find myself coming way, way too short.

It is about time you see this movie. This song when merged with the storyline is when Bhagat Singh started a fast unto death movement in jail just for equal rights and treatment as British prison. The real heroes behind the fought for freedom were these boys and men. True that Gandhi walked a few 100 km to make salt but these men gave up their youth, their families, their future and their lives just to see a free country which sadly they couldn't see with their own eyes because of the so called "father of nation" . one of the key people behind their execution was Gandhi himself. Bhagat Singh and all his cell mates and his supporter or their supporter of his ideologies never kept anything over their dream of free India. There demands were simple and they weren't into politics unlike some people (Gandhi) who tried to find their own benefits even amongst all this.

Bose: The forgotten Hero' is A.R Rahman's most underrated album ever. He gave his best music for that film(kadam kadam, aazadi, zikr and other songs too) but film was a big flop and went unnoticed.
"The soundtrack featured 20 pieces composed by Rahman, including 12 instrumentals and orchestral themes, six songs with lyrics by Javed Akthar and a full orchestral version of Indian National Anthem. Most of the score was conducted by Matt Dunkley and performed by Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The song depicts the low morale the revolutionaries are going through and how some of them are almost succumbing mentally and or physically to hunger, torture and forceful feeding efforts of British. Bismil’s poem was more like a motivational hymn than a war cry, it both reminder and self assertion of the fact that, this path chosen is hard and almost certainly can result in bodily sacrifice. the hunger strike went on for 116 days, Jatin Das died on 63rd day...composition is based on raag Desh, the song captures melancholy, despair and self motivation

40 of young and tough will freedom fighters all ages between 17 to 25 were on 68 days of hunger strike, even water was not provided by britishers, one of them martyred. Great of the greatest freedom fighter Shri Bhagat Singh. Was given death penalty at the young age of 19. What a tough soul they had. British torchered them to eat, brutally bitten them, but they never allowed to even get single drop pass through their throat.

Indian freedom fighters from all corners of India especially Bengalis and Sikhs laid their lives in millions for Indias freedom struggle.... I had visited the Kalapani prison in Andaman Islands before the lockdown.... Its just such a moving experience.... Its just insane what these prisoners had went through in the notorious Kalapani prison.... Still they did not break and went on with their hunger strike until the jailers resorted to feeding them milk through their noses until they died....
