Great video, however there is one piece of information which is not really correct. You do not need to use a genuine battery. There is nothing special about the OEM battery - it does not have unicorn horn dust in it! The part number, manufacturer and serial number are text only fields. Changing the serial number will trigger the BEM to forget any learned values for the old battery and start learning the new battery. By the way, I love my VCDS :-)
When replaced with the same battery, is the coding not really needed then or is it always needed? Trying to figure out if I can just replace my car battery.

Silly question, but how do I know if I have the Standalone system that utilizes Battery Regulation, address 61 or the "Integrated into CAN" with the non-UDS? In both examples, the VCDS software says "Protocol: CAN" in the top left corner of the window.
Great video, thank you for the great support!!! Replaced the battery in our 2013 Q7 TDI. Battery swap was 20 minutes and 5 minutes to change the battery in the software.
Just did this with my 2013 A5 2.0t. Took a moment to realize that my VCDS connects via CAN method but once that was done it was a matter of inputting the value correctly. BTW, I used an Autocraft battery from Carquest, it is virtually identical as the Moll MLA battery that was OEM installed for much less money. Both are made by Johnson Controls, so reliability shouldn't be an issue.
A couple of important hints. If you buy a new battery (like I did) from Audi, and perhaps VW and others, the manufacturer may not be in the listed of accepted one for the middle code you enter. I bought a new one from the dealer today and it was a CCL battery, which isn't in the list. At that point, just use another code from the list. It doesn't matter. I also read that if going non-OEM, just take the old one and change one of the later digits in the third group, increasing it by 1. That's it. I went OEM since the original just died yesterday on a 2013 S4 with 120k miles, so if it lasted that long, I think going the same route for $50 more than a cheapie battery was a smart move.
Hello, I find the explanation at minute 1:17 to be confusing as to how to identify which version BEM you have. More specifically, how do I know if I should use "Battery Regulation, address 61" or CAN Gateway, address 19 ? Car in question is a 2012 Audi S4. Thanks!
RossTech-its not about being the correct battery or incorrect battery. Its about buying a aftermarket replacement part instead of buying a often overpriced dealership part. If I peel the stickers off a Varta and a East Penn battery you really think that even a Audi tech can tell the difference? Do you also think that every tank of fuel is inferior to the fuel the car shipped with :P? Or that a bulb that isn't OEM is inferior as well? This isn't a ECM or a BCM. Its a storage device that uses chemicals to make electricity. Something that is pretty universal from Ford, Nissan, GM, VW and every other brand. Its not rocket science. This just a way to milk money from someone. Its not about using "the wrong battery" (cue the dramatic music). Ever think that the reason someone can afford a $40,000 car is because they don't spend money needlessly?
Yes, it's just a battery, but the Battery Management module makes certain assumptions about the battery's characteristics based on the battery coding. Don't blame us for this; we didn't come up with this stuff, we just make a tool that lets you do yourself what would otherwise require a trip to the dealer.
Then don't re-code, simple as that. Why bitch at Ross Tech, or anyone else that's not the manufacturer for that matter? It's not even the dealers' fault, so write a letter to Matthias Müller and whine about it, or, like the rest of us, change your battery and just drive your car.
Jason Walker I was asking why so many others have not needed to do this. Why does it bother you that I pointed it out? If some one else reads that then may not need to pay dealer cost for a batter and recoding and it saves them the money why does that seem to piss you off so much, keyboard warrior? Seems you are the only one whining. Comment was there for months and decided to get hostile about it.
+madott Simple! To stop you doing it yourself and to get you to bring your vehicle back to the dealership! Repeat business makes more money for the company, and every business exists to make money!

of the 3 BEM Codes listed in this video for Battery Coding to your vehicle. 2 have a total of 10 characters consisting of letters and numbers okay. How do you add a Yuasa battery to an Audi's system by using VCDS? TPS (which is the trade section of Volkswagen Group here in the UK) only now supply Yuasa batteries - so they are effectively now the OEM battery for all VAG group cars in the UK. However, Yuasa isn't a manufacturer that is showing in the drop-down menu within VCDS when you try to update the battery information, and worse, Yuasa batteries don't have a BEM code on the side of the battery to fill in the other required parts of the information to do a proper job of re-coding the car with a new battery! What does one do in these circumstances?

Quick question. I have a VCDS, and i have changed 4 batteries on four different VW's.. 2 CC's Both 2012. One 2012 VW Tiguan SEL and one 2015 VW Gti. All batteries purchased from the dealership. However i did not do any coding and have not had any issue. If it aint broke i won't fix.. But seeing that i only came across this video after the batteries have been changed, i thought i'd ask the question as to why i didn't have any issue ? I know the dealer wanted to charge $80 for coding, but i thought probably just trying to rip me off and i'd try the swap without paying, and it worked out. The CC's are long sold, but i still have the Gti and Tig, should i bother updating ? or just leave as is.
My understanding of this system is that as long as the battery you replaced didn't force the ECM into "Power Saving Mode" AND the new battery is very close (within 1-2 Ah of the battery being replaced), then the ECU will "learn" the new battery. It doesn't actually learn the new battery as the battery has no data link to the ECU, but the programming within the ECU will "reset" the learned parameters so it doesn't trigger certain sensors or low voltage alarms. I'm in the process of resetting a car that went into Power Saving because of a bad battery. I replaced the battery without knowing about this MMI Power Management System and 5 minutes into the test drive the car gave me a "alternator not charging battery" warning before it went bat shit crazy. It's fine now, but I initially looked into relays and fuses as this issue caused a number of electrical failures. The engine ran, but no other system in the car functioned including lights, transmission, abs, and stability control. As far as the car was concerned, those systems weren't even present.
Most VWs short of the last couple years of Touareg don't have a battery regulation control module nor battery registration. For the cars you listed, none will have an issue with you just replacing the battery and not doing any coding.

The next day, when i've put the battery back, the engine started, but a bunch of errors appeared on the MFD. I've bought a new OEM Varta battery for my 08 A4 8k, and simply can't seem to code it. It has to be coded in the CAN gateway, after adding the part number, manufacturer code and serial it simply goes back to the previous code of the old battery. Anyone seen anything similar?
No, the coding is for the BEM (Battery Management System) to forget any learned values and to know that a new battery is installed. I wouldn't recommend installing the battery without letting the BEM know there's a new one.
So apparently you are screwed if you buy a non-OE battery because you won't be able to program the battery. I bought an Autocraft H8-AMG Platinum battery for my Q5 and advance auto customer support called the manufacturer and they don't provide these numbers. So in other words, hope that nothing goes wrong (as I am).
As long as you buy the same spec (type and Ah) you just use the existing coding part number and add 1 to the serial or some other value that keeps the length the same but changes the value.
It's not my battery that needs coding but my Battery Management sensor. It's in my VW Up 2017. Can anyone tell me how to with VCDS ? thanks Michel and Margo

False. "Energy management system" should give you a clue. These systems adjust how they charge your batter. Based on the values that have been stored. When you install a new battery. It can be over charged. Because the system is still trying to give what it still thinks is an old battery, a more aggressive charge. You also will not have proper values to indicate how your new batter health is. The only time you could get away with not coding. Is when you replace a good battery, before it has degraded.

Just replaced the battery in my 2006 Audi A8 with no problems. Just for info, I used a Diehard Gold size H9 battery from Advance Auto and it is made by Varta, same mfr the dealer used and it had a BEM sticker.
Can you provide a photo of said battery showing the BEM code sticker?

Silly question, but how do I know if I have the Standalone system that utilizes Battery Regulation, address 61 or the "Integrated into CAN" with the non-UDS? In both examples, the VCDS software says "Protocol: CAN" in the top left corner of the window.
If adress 61 is not detailed in a full scan , you use adress 19

Great video, thank you for the great support!!!
Replaced the battery in our 2013 Q7 TDI. Battery swap was 20 minutes and 5 minutes to change the battery in the software.
have to replace my battery in my 2013 TDI, what battery did you use?? What VCDS interface did you use??
Thanks
Just did this with my 2013 A5 2.0t. Took a moment to realize that my VCDS connects via CAN method but once that was done it was a matter of inputting the value correctly. BTW, I used an Autocraft battery from Carquest, it is virtually identical as the Moll MLA battery that was OEM installed for much less money. Both are made by Johnson Controls, so reliability shouldn't be an issue.
I appreciate that this is two years down the line but... How do you determine which of the three techniques is the right one to use please ?
Thanks!
I have the same question. I have an Audi A3 8PA. Did you find the answer?
+Uwe Ross then why have people reported on audizine.com that even the dealers often don't bother with doing this for used cars?
And yet, so many have never needed to recode. That is a simple fact.
Comment was there for months and decided to get hostile about it.
why is this thing needed? I mean.. why they force this kind of battery replacement?
+madott Simple! To stop you doing it yourself and to get you to bring your vehicle back to the dealership! Repeat business makes more money for the company, and every business exists to make money!
There are alot easier ways to make an extra dollar then to have your battery code properly. like changing wipers.
So the car knows when to shut off consumers, what voltage to demand from generator and not under/overcharge, when to disable start/stop, when to turn off parking heater etc..
@@snapdragogon69 unfortunately that falls on deaf ears here because the average consumers feeble little mind cant comprehend the reasoning behind it. I'd try explaining it like a cell phone battery and how battery management works as something to relate to, even then it goes right over their simple heads. So many whining people , so little intelligence.

Do I have to go through all this if I’m replacing the two batteries in my 2018 Volvo XC60 T6 with original Volvo batteries from the dealership?
So only non uds is necessary to change the Ah values? The first two, is that information embedded in the serial number?
My MK6 Jetta SE doesn't have the battery regulation option and for the record I never did it on my MK6 GTI
This explains a few things.... i wasn't aware this was even a thing. I just put a 2nd new diehard battery in my 2009 v8. The first time i replaced it, things got weird with the air suspension and the transmission. The second time (last week) nothing went crazy.
Stupid question:
Banner vendor code BA2 doesn't appear in the drop-down menu.
Is this because the battery is EFB and doesn't need coding (no BEM label present)?
Richard Mackenzie did you solve this? I'm in the same boat :/
My understanding is code manufacturer and serial number not important. Only only battery technology and Ah
What is you buy a battery and it doesn't have the BEM code sticker with serial number? Can u use your old battery BEM code to register new battery? For Audi A1 1.4
Quick question.
Hello,
I have had a dead battery 2 days ago, and i took it inside overnight to recharge it.
The next day, when i've put the battery back, the engine started, but a bunch of errors appeared on the MFD.
From what i saw from other sources, these errors appeared because the computer reads the battery as low.
My question is, will the errors dissappear as soon as i will get some KMs running or do i need to get a tester on it to delete them?
Will disappear

Audi a4 1.8 tfsi year 2009. Can install the original battery without this coding ?

The battery itself keeps the power all the time (I checked it) although MMI shows battery low sometimes. Thanks in advance.

On "other" cars you have to swap battery every ~5 years if you lucky.
With bcm and proper coding roughly every ~10 years.
So do your own math.
The battery coding is only required for the dealers to see if your battery is registered to the car and under "warranty" or replaced under warranty, NO OTHER REASON
It's needed for the stop/start feature to operate.
