I really love how in depth you are with these heros of our youth. I'm just getting back into Gi Joe, after reserecting my collection from my parents garage. I'm hitting ventage toy stores and working out deals to buy what I dont have. I'm a new dedicated fan to your site. Thx

Another great review! Not the greatest figure certainly (though my childhood Destro figure is thoroughly destroyed from play-wear), but as a character, he's one of the best from the Joeverse. And as you pointed out, I think it's the gloriously delicious infighting and backstabbing between top Cobra/Enemy agents like Destro that is as much, if not more, responsible for Cobra's repeated defeats and shortfalls, than anything the Joes ever do against Cobra.
This is my favorite version of Destro. I like the villains who work with Cobra but don't serve the Cobra cause. Destro and Major Bludd are just two examples because they lacked the Cobra insignia on there uniform. Same would be said for Zartan and the Dreadnoks. I would also consider Firefly and Scrap Iron however they have the cobra sigil on there sleeve.

Congrats on hitting 1k. I regards to Destro, he should not have a Cobra logo on his file card as he eventually had in 1985 as he is not a member of Cobra, just their weapons supplier. If you look at the villains pre-1985, if they were not members of Cobra like Zartan and Major Bludd they had "GI Joe" on their file cards. I always took it that they are just part of the GI Joe Universe; that's why it has the GI Joe logo. In this case it doesn't make sense as Destro works with Cobra but is not an official member. When it comes to his rival on GI Joe, in the comic, Cobra Commander states that if his equivalent is General Flagg than Destro's equivalent would be Hawk so you were right there. He's a better soldier than Cobra Commander but doesn't have his resources.

Maybe he was such a great character in the comics that I looked past the strange attire. Whatever, he has his own style and he looks very distinct in the early GI JOE line up. I never knew he had 3 years on the shelves. Great review. I am glad you did the second time thing to explain more effectively what is so interesting about Destro.

+HoodedCobraCommander788 maybe it's all about Larry Hama putting such a sense of honor into his version of Destro in the comic series. When he prevents Billy from assassinating Cobra Commander I saw valor in Destro and hoped Hama would continue breathe life into stale fictional bad guys in comics.

I never thought Destro had a bare chest, as a kid because of the cartoon and the off color of the chest I thought it was a yellow shirt. It wasn't until much later that I saw that it was supposed to be an exposed chest, thank goodness that never caught on and they changed the color.

I have a carded Destro from the Plastirama line. His VERY short bio said his primary military specialty is "engineer" & his secondary specialty is "artillery." His code name is ... Unlawful. His name "Destro" still appears on the card, though. Somewhere, it all just gets lost in translation. Heck, Storm Shadow is ,literally translated from Spanish, Cobra of Ice.

Well...I was today's years old when I found out version 1 Destro had a bare chest and wasn't wearing a yellowish-orange undershirt beneath his leather jacket.
Not once did I ever think that was supposed to be his bare chest.

It did appear in the cartoon that half of cobra's defeats were caused by international dischord and sabotage.
In a WW2 context as it relates to Cobra and Destro, I see way more similarities between Prussian officers or even Rommel than I see the relationship between Mussolini.
The Prussians stood up against Hitler, the Prussian officers wore a similar uniform, and they brought an old school sense of honor the Nazi regime lacked.
The same could be said for Rommel.

Always found this character extremely importat in the GIJoe series, and comics. As a child I really wanted him leading my cobra warband, never had him thou..

+Rik Ice Maybe they wanted "Destro" to mean he was Cobra Commander's right hand man, but I don't think Cobra Commander would have thought of him that way, at least in the comic book. The Baroness was more his right hand. Destro was more of a necessary evil, an untrusted ally. But characters sometimes develop in directions other than what they were originally intended.
I noticed the file card states "he dons his silver battle mask and enters battle himself..." which implies that he usually does not wear the mask, but only when going into battle.
You did great service to Destro. I find it funny, not haha but interesting, how you frequently discuss Larry Hama's influence into GI Joe, ARAH. I started buying, who am I kidding-it is more like begging for, the toys from their peg appeal in 1982, and it was not until issues 21, 22, and 23, a grocery store 3-pack, did I even know there was a comic book. Those three comics changed my entire way of playing with, and viewing, GI Joe.
Where Star Wars had movies, three years apart, Larry Hama put out an excellent comic, barring some of the more forced insertions. As you reminded us in this video, two key players, Dr Venom and Scar Face, three if you include Kwinn, never saw an action figure in the Hasbro original line.
People's ignorance of, or reluctance to buy, the comic, I believe, contributed to GI Joe's eventual failure and demise. The hardcore fans do not consider Sunbow or DIC to be canon, but the Marvel run of comics. A marked sign of fatigue was the inclusion of tow hooks and gas ports where the options to get something at retail was top shelf expensive, or non-existent. Keep up the good work.

I've got the 25th anniversary Destro and he comes with 2 pistols which both can be put in his leg holster an uzi a laser pistol that looks like Cobra Commander's vintage pistol and a briefcase but no backpack
This Destro, and the 1988 gold faceplate Iron Grenadiers version, are the only two versions I like.
I'll never understand how guys like you, formbx257, Toy Polloi, RetroBlasting...etc have only few hundred or a few thousand subscribers when you put out quality content that you can tell you guys put a lot of effort in to. Yet, reaction videos, hauls, rant channels have millions of subscriber for mindless, boring, and uninformative content that they slap together in minutes. It just boggles my mind!! Destro wears an armored shirt under the jacket. Notice how his helmet is bolted to it? It can’t be a bare chest. Also, the giant ruby he wears looks similar to the one worn by Vlad the Impaler.

As a young'n, I didnt looked at this figure as barechested for some reason.

Destro was a striking figure at the time- nothing else like it. Funny thing- my mom was one of those "weird" christians that was really strict about toys. For instance, I wasn't allowed a Skeletor toy when I was a kid because it looked "evil". She wouldn't let me have a Destro I got for my birthday because she said he looked like a Satan worshiper.
