    The "fanny pack" is a Scottish Sporran. It's a small pouch worn with a kilt, since kilts do not have pockets. They are a Highland tradition. I always liked V3, because his collar looked more like the Sunbow design I grew up with.

    • @Classic80sFanboy
      @Classic80sFanboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a non collector, I was going to write that the front pouch reminded me of a Sporran. It would make sense considering his Scots ancestry.

  • @dmathiass
    @dmathiass 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    It's a thistle and a sporan, very scottish symbology. The chest flower isn't very detailed, but the card artwork shows it better and the pre-production artwork shows it too.

    I love the Destro variant with the leopard print, Pimp daddy Destro should have come with a pimp cane a hat and able to give a Destro backhand!

    I was out of Joe by this point but my best friend's kid brother was still very much into it. We kept him in Joes because honestly- we still enjoyed it as well. I worked at "America's Leading Retailer" when these arrived and I remember there were only two of most every figure in a case (some exceptions) so I basically bought half the case that day. The figure is alright... Could have stayed a little truer to V1, which was always one of my favorite action figures. One cool thing- That disc shooter was FUN. Our's must have had a stout spring. It could sling em!

    I used to get Action Force when I was a kid. We had a Destro who was named Red Jackal that came with a Red Shadow version of the Hiss tank. The tan coloured chest area on Destro was red with a white skull and crossbones on Red Jackal. We also had the first version of Destro with his Cobra colours.
    GI Joe was sold as Action Force here in the UK.

    I actually really like the anachronistic elements of his outfit. The sporran, the cavalry boots, the ridiculous collar. It all feels like a distinct attempt to cling to his valued heritage... Though, while i think version 1 is generally the best (though i don't like the head) version 3 is a close runner up on my eyes.

    I love Destro V3. Prob because this was the figure I had as a kid. I had several GI Joes as a kid, even tho I never saw the cartoon and had a minimal number of comics. The head sculp was so spot on for V3, and I thought the desk launcher was cool. As I said, I never knew much about GI Joe Lore as a kid, but I knew this character has a to be a top dog just by looking at him, and I wasn’t wrong!

    My favorite Destro other than V.1 , has to be V2 , I liked the Iron Grenadiers look just not the gold head. I liked the cape too. Version 3 was just too strange looking with the alien head and the big collar and tiny legs. Version 1 will always be iconic. I always played with version 2 as a field commander. Great video as always. Maybe I'll find time to send something in for Convergence. I just work too much.

    All Hail Destro! I am huge fan of Destro for reasons that Comic Tropes mentioned in his section. I do think that this version 3.0 is solid and it doesn't deserve hate that it gets.

    It's amazing how two figures can have so much in common, and yet vary so much in terms of overall design quality. The 2-pack version looks better though - and that Fast Blast Viper is a good looking figure! Never seen it before

    The picture of the necklace looks like a thistle, the national flower of Scotland. The rose is the national flower of England and I don’t see a Scotsman ever wearing a rose. Maybe they wanted to give him some home pride without putting a kilt on him. (Although a parade dress destro wearing his family colors would be grand)

    The ending of this video where you threw something is total RaycerX energy. Also, this toy holds a special place in my heart. The HoF one and the 3 3/4 fig as well. Great review. My lil bro and I would eschew the "gimmick" accessories of the 90's and just play with the toys.

    Love this in-depth review. Everyone did a great job sharing their knowledge and perspectives on the character & figure. 🤘🏻😎🖤 What a fun story concerning the Pimp Daddy Destro. I have the common ’97 figure but will get myself another and make a custom. Vinny D’Aleva was one of those Hasbro-employees that got their own GI Joe-figures, his was ’91 Cesspool (one of my top 10 favorites...review soon?) Destro is a great character. Cobraaaaaa!!!🐍🐍🐍

    Disclaimer: There is some nostalgia bias involved, but -- Destro v3 is a good 90s figure and an acceptable 90s remake for kids who missed out on the first two versions (Like my brother and me. Side note: '91 & '92 were great years for me. I got my first Hawk, Snake-eyes, Stalker, Destro, Firefly, Storm Shadow, and Duke figures). I even got the 12" version (with the awesome removable mask!).
    Yes, the Dv3 chest and collar is too big, the head is too, small, and it has orange on it. It's a flawed figure, but does what it needs to, overall. His gun is great and the disk launcher is underrated. It packed a punch and was different from other SLMLs. I thought it was kind of a modern follow-up to Scrap Iron's launcher. I believe the disks are are identical to those that came with the Avalanche.
    I think the high boots/leggings are a great nod to v2. Overall, v3 clearly isn't as good as v1 or v2, but it's a usable placeholder.

    Yes Brother, I grew up playing highland games and having to wear my Murray kilt on holidays. The crotch pouch is a Scottish sporran, and the neck piece appears to be a thistle.

    Ive owned every Destro in the retro line (but not that silly Space Camel Destro), but I never owned them at the same time so I never got to stand any of them next to each other. That blew my mind. I always thought this Destro was very close to the original 1983 figure.... boy, was I wrong.

    Destro 1 was the 1st G.I.Joe figure I bought for myself instead of for my nephew. Until I saw him I'd conceded to the "wisdom" that I was too old for them. V2 just barley beat V1 as my fave, though I'd have transplanted V1's arms if they'd have fit. V3 looks good at first glance, but I have to agree with most criticisms of it. Aside from not being chrome the head was too small and too detailed for what was supposed to be a hard metal mask. The epaulettes/shoulder pads restricted arm movement. The bulky chest might've worked better with longer/bigger legs like the first two instead of being shorter. I did like the bigger gun as an addition to the first, and would've appreciated the thistle if it were clearer. I got a later version of it, put an equally too small Roadblock head on it and called him Alexander, Destro's son from IMAGE/Devil's Due comix. Thanks for the background info on Arthur Burghardt, an impressive figure in his own right.

    great review. I had the Chinese version of him growing up. also had the Chinese version CoCo which was the V1 reissued , I always liked this figure and that it was like a scaled down version of the 12" one. that mold was reused again for V12 but with a all new headsculpt but it looks terrible. I suppose if you really wanted the classic chrome look version you could mix and match v5 head with the darker muted colours of the V6 body . or just use v3 body

    His necklace is definitely a thistle, not a rose. The rose is the national flower of England, so not self respecting Scottish laird would use that as jewelry. I can make out the round body of the thistle with its distinctive flat top, and the stem beneath it. No other flower looks like that. If it was recoloured in green and purple, you would see it more clearly.

    Italian here: actually it's "Il braccio destro" not "brarrio".

    Is it possible that Rudat was inspired (perhaps even subconsciously) by the cover to the Judas Priest Album Stained Class? The resemblance is quite uncanny. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stained_Class

      My version of Destro is the same. Half of the carded figures in 1992 out of the 12 are stamped with 1991. The other half are stamped 1992.

    Did you know Arthur is a vegetarian and they still made him eat fried chicken on the set of Network?

    If you switch heads, you will have the perfect Destro.

      It's a purple thistle, not a red rose. A sign of his Scottish heritage.
