It’s how businesses make profit after investing massive amounts of cash into licenses, construction, inventory, payroll, etc. You saw me on another comment because sadly there are a lot of naive children who don’t understand how basic economics work.
Just remember, don’t pay these ridiculous prices for a 3DS, especially the older models!

Yeah the Japanese ones are still really cheap. I’ve seen one for like 60 dollars while the NA edition is over 350; though the region lock is kinda annoying to disable
yeah thankfully japanese versions tend to be more reasonably priced and not as affected by this ridiculous scalping

Lucky. I've still got mine but the screen flickers. I did get a new 3DSxl a couple years back to replace it and that one's going pretty strong.

Same with me, I have a Limited edition Zelda 3DS, it's got some scratches but I still love it, so glad I was smart enough to put it down to prevent any further wear and tear
I still need to get my old 2ds fixed since the screen cracked a couple years back.
The only problem with my 3ds xl is that the spring fell out of the cartridge slot and is under the card reader slot things and im not sure how to fix but other than that mine works perfectly and I'm moding it rn so I can play it again

I managed to get one for 209$ that had a top ips screen but with cartridge slot didn't work which doesn't really matter because homebrew exists.

Thought of buying one but a 3DS going as high as they are is pure insanity. They're not old enough to be rare or new enough to cost almost as much as a new system no matter how easily it is to mod.
except they sold terribly, break somewhat easily, hard to repair, and have amazing capabilities. they are fairly priced.

The highest I'll pay for a 3DS xl is 130-150, depending on the condition. It's crazy how people expect someone to pay 400-700 dollars for a 3ds, especially the ones who are franchise themed
I feel like most of the reason they cost so much rn is because most of the kids that grew up with these systems are nostalgic over them. Physical 3DS games are crazy expensive now too, especially games released later in the 3DS life cycle.

I managed to get a 2Ds XL in the box from a local pawn shop for £99 and I feel blessed for getting a deal like that!

You could have gotten a better deal if you started in 2021 or 2022 for £40 to £50 with games included.
I got one of those 2DS bundles that had Mario Kart 7 included for ~$100 way back in like 2015. It was a steal at the time and I was able to easily mod it years later, but i also wanted to upgrade to one of the New 3DS XLs (mostly for the bigger screen, but also to try the handful of N3DS-only games) and those things go for like $250-$300 now 😔
Yeah it's absurd. At this point it would be better to just get a psvita and mod it. You'll have better games to emulate too, like the ps1 and psp. No platforming and turn based rpgs tho, so depending on who you are, that can be a positive or a negative. For me it's definitely positive, I don't like all those shitty rpgs bloating a games library, making me think there's something fun when it's just a turn based rpg

This is why I’m glad I kept my old 3ds xl and recently modded it. It was super easy to do and yeah it technically isn’t as fast as the new 3ds but still works perfectly well it isn’t that much of a difference where I want to spend an extra $200 to get a slightly fast boot up time once it plays games I don’t notice any difference.
A month ago, I bought a black New 3DS XL in a used products app, 130€ (im from Spain) it incluided a case. I also bought a 1€ 3ds pencil because it was broken and a 64 gb sd card (you can use it on the 3ds with a program on PC that changes his format to fat32). With 140€ i bought one of the best consoles of all time, i hacked it (fbi and twilight menu), i can play 3ds, ds, gba, gb games.
And add to that the fact that you can also play now the whole catalog of the Virtual Boy... in 3D. Freaking awesome!

You can also mod the dsi too. Its the same application as the 3ds. Its twilight menu which is p useful
There’s really no benefit to it compared to the 3DS though. At least the DS lite has the GBA slot, but even then the 3DS still plays GBA games natively. Unless you only ever plan on playing DS games so you want the D-Pad in a more comfortable spot.

I got a ds for Christmaswhen I was 6 and from then on I’ve been in love with the ds and later 3ds systems. I’m 20 now and somehow managed to preserve my 3ds. Though my ds officially stopped working about a year ago. Man so many memories

These are just good reasons to get one, the real reason why the prices of the 3DS have increased are resellers thinking the 3ds is worth more than it is AND people on youtube are always telling their viewers in videos that they should get a 3DS so now the demand has increased and since it has, people used that opportunity to raise the prices to almost original retail price or more

depends on if its the base 3ds xl or new 3ds xl. $185 for a normal 3DS XL is a bit much imo (especially when u can softmod it and get OoT for free) but hey at the end of the day if u think its worth it and u’ll get alot of millage out of it go for it. I got a New 3DS XL in 2018 from a friend and used that thing religiously throughout almost all of high school if he didn’t give it to me I honestly would’ve just bought one it was such a valid thing to have and still is in 2023 and beyond

I got my New 2DS XL brand new in box at a Walmart RIGHT when they were dying out, and I’m glad I did. Super fun console, especially once you mod it!
I have mine from 10 years ago and still runs perfectly. Modded it last year and it's never getting out of fashion I swear.

honestly this was the price i paid in canadian for a (used) new 2ds xl. Dont regret it either since i initially bought it to replace my first gen 3ds that gives me a friggen headache after 30s of use, so i wanted the non 3d version. aside from when i want to play vita games, its my most used handheld now.

The biggest reason is because you cant really enjoy modded ds and 3ds games on other systems, the touch screen and dual screen is unique to this system.

Check around pawn shops, some still take them and they are cheaper than online. I got a mint red new 3DS XL the other day for a little over $100. I also have a new 2DS XL that I got for $85 last year. I've seen old 2DS systems (just as moddable) going for $40 at a couple.
Things like scalpers make me glad my country isn't so dumb with pricing, literally this month I got a Pink OG3DS for basically 50$, and that was split so I only spent 25$ myself (and that wasn't just the console, it was for all I needed to be fly)

So weird as, right before they stopped selling them and had only the 2ds and new 2ds XL still for sale, they where going for quite cheap new and shops seemed to struggle to sell them off. Literally a few months after they stopped selling them, the new 2ds XL, which was once new 130, was now 200+
