That composite perspective was brilliant! Being able to see both the ground troop's and pilot's perspectives at the same time was really neat. You got pretty lucky having people recording and catching those moments at those exact times. The map showing the locations of people when showing their views made it really easy to visualize what was going on at what point. It kind of makes me wonder what watching a whole mission like that would be like... Not that I would wish that kind of work on you, Dslyecxi, but you have to admit it would be really cool! Anyway, awesome work! Definitely one of my favorite ShakTac videos!
It would be very cool to be able to selectively pull views from any POV during a mission and edit those into a larger narrative. Unfortunately that's just not really possible most of the time. :(
I didn't expect to have an actual emotional reaction to this video but damn. The immediate reaction of you and your comrades on the ground really speaks volumes to the level of authenticity ArmA and ShackTac offers. Great video
Dslyecxi From start to about 3:22, it genuinely sounded like you were choking back tears or something. You really gave that narration some emotion and feeling. I know not alot of people notice and appreciate things like that, but dammit that was a great performance. Great Editing, great ending, and a great "sacrifice". Good shit commander, carry on!
Oh, no - that wasn't my mindset when recording the v/o, so if it comes across that way, it wasn't intentional. This was a neat situation, and it's fun to highlight it, but the only emotions in the voiceover are positive ones, with some seriousness thrown in at parts.
Dslyecxi I have been watching your videos for about a year now, and have never felt a need to comment on one of your videos. I just simply enjoyed them and kept going without any social interaction with you. But this video I must say is amazing even though it takes place in about 1 minute or real time but narrated into about 5 minutes. Which I love. Seeing what goes though your head in such a short amount of time is very cool seeing how other arma pilots go through different situations. Please Please keep up the narration it is my favorite part about your videos. And thank you for all of your effort into making this and every video you have done.
Well, seeing as how black and white the damage system in ArmA is, yes and no. In real life, an RPG at the side of the helo would probably instantly lose ATRQ as well as engine. The hit in the front of the cockpit would have probably killed the pilots and brought it all down as there are no longer controls to stabilize it. Helicopters are actually a lot more fragile than you'd think, when it comes to explosives.
Soccerrockker6 I also didn't quite mention how impact damage for real helicopters actually work. A crash at the speed this video shows would have resulted in an explosion for sure. However, many explosions you see in ArmA typically shouldn't happen. A lot of crashes in ArmA would in real life, be salvageable for at least a few of those on board. Especially when landing on the rotors, in ArmA that's an instant explosion, but in real life, it's just a lot of shrapnel and dust.
Soccerrockker6 I doubt this kind of landing would have resulted in an explosion IRL. Ever seen this vid? national geographic amazing moments : mount hood helicopter crash
***** Perhaps I stand corrected. However, I'm not sure that helicopter was going quite as fast as you were (80 kph - 50 mph). Also, perhaps it could have been different due to the mountain having powder snow rather than rough dirt?
Soccerrockker6 Speed of an impact as it relates to damage is very much relative to angle and speed at which the surface is being impacted. Striking a hillside while parallel to it at 60mph would bleed a lot of energy through friction, and who knows what would happen after that, but I'd suspect you would not see an aircraft spontaneously explode as in this situation. It wouldn't necessarily have been survivable for anyone inside, but I suspect you would have had a much more interesting slide down the hillside, damage from bouncing off of rocks or trees, etc, and perhaps at the end of that the crew could have stumbled out alive.
I've got a new favourite short video of yours now. I really like how you stepped us through this, Dslyecxi. This kind of commentary is _definitely_ something I want to see more of, and I'm sure others agree. The other POVs were also great, just what I was hoping for as I was listening to the commentary. The way you showed us where they were on the map was a touch that definitely oriented us to the action.
It's amazing how Arma can immerse yourself so much (when played the right way, of course) that makes your mind think so fast as would happen in a real life scenario. As a real life pilot (airplane, civilian) I saw situations that made my mind work ten times faster, giving me the possibility to think of all the possible outcomes and choosing the right one in a split second. And training plays a major role here. I never been in a dramatic crash IRL, but i know exactly what went through dslyecxi's mind. BTW, good fking job!
Very close to real life than most people realize. I have seen some immediate decision calls of similar circumstances in Aghanistan before my military retirement. The term that is sometimes alternatively used remains "acceptable losses" to prevent friendly casualties.
Uploads such as this tend to be my absolute favorite of yours. This one in particular shows just how much split second decisions can...well...break or destroy a situation.
I loved the commentary, you know many soldiers, pilots, and even drivers go unrecognized for what they do when everything goes downhill, I've been in numerous situations where people know that others would be in more trouble than they are if they didn't stop doing what they could til the end.
really liked the way this video was put together. The narration of the mindset, the multiple camera angles and the use of the map to establish the locations of those angles. Really well done, would like debriefing videos of this nature.
I have to say, it was really cool to look at a situation like this from all these perspectives. When I first saw Daishi's perspective it gave me goosebumps :p Very good video Dslyecxi!
I love how the commentary is very articulate and calm and in the actual event its all, Shit, Fuck lets not try and kill everyone. After the first part I was almost expecting a soliloquy as you went down. Its a great juxtaposition.
This is why I love the arma community. None of that, "Oh well, I'll just respawn so forget you guys. See you in 5 seconds..." Nice editing at the end of the video too. It was cool to see the situation from multiple perspectives. I wish you could do that more in your videos. Great job!
I really liked getting the different perspectives and the reactions on the ground. Those guys seemed crushed and at the same time reacted correctly and gave you a wide berth on the way down. Or at least tried. Also so much happening in the space of 15 seconds.
Great video. I was playing some Arma 3 with a friend of mine a while ago, and I was flying an Orca while he (Zeus) was trying to take me out. Let me preface this by saying that I am by no means a good pilot. I'm not terrible, but to say I'm good would be overestimating; I chalk this up to luck. I got hit by with some sort of rocket, and I was in a similar situation: Nothing left but the hull, about 70 meters off the ground. I wasn't traveling very fast, so I fell almost straight down; with the blades still spinning, I tried to generate lift by spinning the chopper in a direction opposite the blades. Somehow, this worked, and I hit the ground 70m below without exploding, and with minor injuries. I got out, patched myself up, and sauntered away. The chopper immediately blew up as soon as I was out of range. I didn't record it, but I swear it's true. All I can say is that I wish I was cooler, but I looked back at the explosion rather than just keep walking away like a bad ass. Definitely dumb luck. Cheers!
I love this dyslecxi, being an ArmA unit pilot myself its awesome to see these sorts of videos of shit that is spot on with how it is when your sitting there in your cockpit.
Fast thinking. For the commentaries series, it would be great to see a video of how Shacktac mission makers work before and during the mission. Would help many ppl do the same. Keep it up. I'm glad to see the first of the commentaries with Patreon.
Make sure you fine connoisseurs show your love for the commentaries through likes. These are some of my favourite kinds of content so I lifted my heavy finger to the thumbs up button - do the same lads!
I've been a sub for quite some time now, and I've never gotten bored or tired of watching any of your videos. Great video and have a good Memorial Day.
What a beautiful video!! It's almost sad to see any pilot go down like that, even in a game, but what reaction! I absolutely love this for the step-by-step breakdown of what was going through your (or any great pilot's) head and the simultaneous perspectives at the end of the video. Since it happened so quickly so much may have been missed without this breakdown when it comes to the importance of the actions of a pilot...well aside from your final words :) Add to favorites for sure!
Great video dyslexci, seeing the helicopter from multiple viewpoints actually made it quite intense, and a bit emotional. Was a bit like blackhawk down, which is a compliment. Would definitely like to see more commentary videos. Fly safe o7
Not to go all fanboy on certain aspects, but I really think this is the coolest part of ARMA. In many other games, this sort of awesome, cinematic stuff is by and large scripted. In a game of ARMA like this, all these "cinematic" moments are genuine, spontaneous things. Sorry to see that you exploded, Dslyexci, but that was pretty awesome.
Have to say love the editing. As dramatic as it was from your prospective it always seems to be worse for the people on the ground, seeing there only hope of a quick rescue come crashing down in quite literaly a flaming wreck.
editing vids together is just amazing like that.. of course its harder to to and takes more time but its really worth it imho! great footage and great piloting RIP (:
This is the sort of content I really enjoy most (I'm a fan of all of it, of course). I appreciate learning about what went into decisions made - not just what happened, but why. 8D "Crashing on the platoon in that Blackhawk extract would have prevented that amazing finale from happening. I think that's really neat. :)" I agree - it's fascinating to learn about a decision shaping the following events.
This is an epic vid. Dyslexi (like in many of his videos) was borderline mellow dramatic but that's perfectly fine, seeing as this is a simulator after all.
Hi! I have been watching your content for a some time now, and I just have to say: Excellent content! I hope you continue making videos like this for a long time into the future. Looks like ( through the videos ) you, and the community, have really mastered the "art of serious fun". I personally enjoy(ed) the narrated videos very much, hope you make more of them some time. Keep it up!
I like having the multiple views. It would be cool to see this type of thing in regular videos, but that would also take a lot more time to edit. More commentaries would be nice too especially with the different variants of helicopters and even tanks.
Well, that was awesome. I like videos like this, it offers a glimpse of the mindset of a helo pilot, even if it is in a game, and i find it very interesting.
That was a very professional way to go. Of course, while I prefer to be on the ground, I've done some crazy stuff in Arma 2... like using UH1Y's as suicide artillery spotters. Find the biggest chunk of trouble and report back before my chopper becomes a flaming ball of wreckage over the battlefield. MLRS avenges me as I land amidst the enemy troopers who killed me.
This is also a point for armoured vehicles. Too often I see support vehicles following closely behind infantry, and knowing the way armas AI works, that vehicle is an explosive magnet. All I can think is "when that thing pops, which is will at some point we will lose an entire squad with it."

I appreciate the granularity of this commentary. A small moment, but fraught with decisions, reactions, and impacts both literal and figurative. The only improvement would have been if you'd been able to carry far enough to come down on one of those tanks, screaming "From Hell's heart I stab at thee!"
I love the editing in this video! Really hope we get to see multiple prospective videos more. I understand they take a lot longer to put together but it fits well for videos such as this that serve multiple roles (entertainment, educational). I just wish the damage modules for vehicles in arma where more realistic and didn't result in insta-splosion when heavily damaged. Woulda been awesome to see you ride that bitch to the bottom of the hill and jump out in classic one-in-a-million style!

***** Legit
He's just incredibly soft spoken in his V/O work.
I think he's just a really calm guy. I don't think he was going method or anything.
Oh trust me. I've seen this calm guy go nuts plenty of times. But yeah, he is indeed soft spoken...
5:11 Some very good reactions from the guy on the radio on the ground. He did exactly the right thing at the time.
This video was beyond quality. Great job on all the editing and things.
But... where is my "Hi, this is Dslyecxi!"?
To whom should I say hi now?
That whimper at the end of a rifleman who realized his extract just exploded...
Dslyecxi I have been watching your videos for about a year now, and have never felt a need to comment on one of your videos. Really well done, would like debriefing videos of this nature.
One of the coolest videos I've seen from you. I very much enjoyed the commentary and multiple perspectives.
That was actually really interesting... I loved the dual perspective. Would really like to see more stuff like that!
I have to say, it was really cool to look at a situation like this from all these perspectives. When I first saw Daishi's perspective it gave me goosebumps :p

Awesome vid!
I would love to see more like the last part. Not necessarily commented, and cut together from different perspectives
I can see you put a lot of time and love into this, it really shows and makes this video a cut above the rest of your (already very good) videos.
This is why I love the arma community. None of that, "Oh well, I'll just respawn so forget you guys. See you in 5 seconds..."
Nice editing at the end of the video too. It was cool to see the situation from multiple perspectives. I wish you could do that more in your videos. Great job!

Holy shit. Amazing quality video, very, very well done! I am so glad I'm supporting you on patreon!

wow. I really enjoy your commentaries and your editing here was really nice. Pretty cool to see all the different perspectives.
That was a wonderful decision made and shows that even in defeat can come the most inspired moments in Arma.
I love this dyslecxi, being an ArmA unit pilot myself its awesome to see these sorts of videos of shit that is spot on with how it is when your sitting there in your cockpit.

Lovely work. Commentary of the event mixed with editing in the different POVs. Thanks Again for the work.

I've been a sub for quite some time now, and I've never gotten bored or tired of watching any of your videos. Great video and have a good Memorial Day.
Really enjoyed the editing in this video, fantastic job dslyecxi.
Without a doubt my favourite of your videos yet, this was awesome.
that was actually pretty awesome the way u did drive it away from friendlies and held it until the 2nd hit
Really amazing, you weren't joking when talking about quality content. The editing was impressive !

you are the best pilot I know pal. Keep up the good work! I love it
Wonderfully edited, great perspective. Really makes me wish I had a squad to roll with
Loved the montage effect with the other points of view! This is a great video and I enjoyed watching it thoroughly!
That "Noo.." at the end! That did it for me. Reminds me of that one CHKilroy video with the Broken Arrow ending.
The guy when you crashed:"Oh that's not good!" That was pretty funny
Spectacular insight. The helo missions are always my favorite.
That was some fantastic editing! Thanks for the video!
"We have a Black Hawk Down, I Repeat, A Black Hawk Down"
Amazing, awesome to see the squad in mentions point of view as well!
It's like a debriefing from beyond the grave! Mémoires of Dyslexci's ghost.
Epic to see those different perspectives play out at the same time
Not to go all fanboy on certain aspects, but I really think this is the coolest part of ARMA. In many other games, this sort of awesome, cinematic stuff is by and large scripted. In a game of ARMA like this, all these "cinematic" moments are genuine, spontaneous things.
Sorry to see that you exploded, Dslyexci, but that was pretty awesome.
Dslyecxi, i spent a good hour looking for this vid to watch again, bloody love it.
Have to say love the editing. As dramatic as it was from your prospective it always seems to be worse for the people on the ground, seeing there only hope of a quick rescue come crashing down in quite literaly a flaming wreck.
I loved the use of multiple perspectives! More of that please, would be cool to see it in one of the longer video :)
editing vids together is just amazing like that.. of course its harder to to and takes more time but its really worth it imho! great footage and great piloting RIP (:
Conscientious pilots are hard to come by. And when you find them, you know they're keepers.
This is the sort of content I really enjoy most (I'm a fan of all of it, of course). I appreciate learning about what went into decisions made - not just what happened, but why. 8D
"Crashing on the platoon in that Blackhawk extract would have prevented that amazing finale from happening. I think that's really neat. :)"

Yet another amazing video from Dslyecxi, keep up the great work! :)
Very informative, and some great life saving maneuvers Dslyecxi.
From one pilot to another, good job on the landing and awesome video!
The thing you were talking about is feeling of brotherhood. There was an interesting veteran talk on TED.com
Sebastian Junger: Why veterans miss war
Very well put together, Dslyecxi! Looking forward to the next Art of Flight installment. :D
This is an epic vid. Dyslexi (like in many of his videos) was borderline mellow dramatic but that's perfectly fine, seeing as this is a simulator after all.
Excellent video Dsylecxi.
Awesome, inspiring and teaching a lot - I'm looking forward for more of this type of content :D
Keep it up!
Loved the different viewpoints at the end.
I like having the multiple views. It would be cool to see this type of thing in regular videos, but that would also take a lot more time to edit. More commentaries would be nice too especially with the different variants of helicopters and even tanks.
I love seeing moments like this from different perspectives! More please! Especially CAS.
More of these. These are good.
Especially liked the one with the PKM and the 2 floor sheet metal house.
Brilliant Dslyecxi always making sure everyone is safe before you are! 👍
Very nice vid demonstrating a very extraordinary arma situation!
You should do more of these analysis type videos.
perfect demonstration Dsly, love it and great job :D
I would of had a short moment of silence for you dslyecxi you did your job to the fullest.
This was well put together. Good video.
That was some real Lone Survivor shit right there. Great piloting as always Dslyecxi.
Well, that was awesome. I like videos like this, it offers a glimpse of the mindset of a helo pilot, even if it is in a game, and i find it very interesting.
So does ShackTac issue the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously?
Wow, getting to see different views of the action was great. Would love to see more similar editng in future :D
Nifty! More like this and the mind of a MG gunner. I'd also love to see a bit on command and control. Thanks D
This is also a point for armoured vehicles. Too often I see support vehicles following closely behind infantry, and knowing the way armas AI works, that vehicle is an explosive magnet. All I can think is "when that thing pops, which is will at some point we will lose an entire squad with it."
i like the commantery videos. I would like more of them :)
Great footage. So little time to act, you could hear the fear of those on the ground.
Great vis, would love to see more of the kind...educational :)
Awesome edit, all the other angles were sweet
Dslyecxi, dying in a helicopter?
But I thought that was impossible :P
I just had to Dslyecxi ;) But as allways, a very good video. I love your short commentary videos and I allways hope for more of them. They are usually very educational and interesting to watch. I'd love more of them!
A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. - Joseph Campbell
love the editing on this
I appreciate the granularity of this commentary. A small moment, but fraught with decisions, reactions, and impacts both literal and figurative. The only improvement would have been if you'd been able to carry far enough to come down on one of those tanks, screaming "From Hell's heart I stab at thee!"
Awesome job. It's situations like these that you wish Arma had a more realistic crash model and that AI RPGs weren't so damn accurate. :P
My arma inspiration, I have learned from you. Since the start of art of flight to this ;)
Cool editing dslyecxi.
I love these commentary videos
Amazing work on this video (besides everything else).
