Short answer: 805, all the way! This 800 generation, 800 and 805, is where DeWalt woke up and became a beast. They literally outperform the red competition and almost takes over higher grade big drills such as DCD996 when working with small screws and holes < #10 ish or sort. Sure, those higher grade, high-end drills literally pounce off 800 and 805 when it comes to lag screws or anything big and requires high torque. But it looks like David vs. Goliath with small stuffs. So, yeah, don't bother with 777/778, just head out for 800/805!!
Got the 805 and this thing is an animal. Been making holes on 1/8" steel and on wood with titanium bits like butter. I also ran about 40 3" screws to work on a swing set and man it responded well to everything. 2 days of constant work in the bag and it has checked all the boxes. Will probably get under my truck tonight and try out the light in the dark to see how that 20 minute light works.
I got the 778 for £140 here in the UK in 2024….with case,2 x 5ah batteries, charger …. So theoretically you’re getting the drilll, charger and case for free….oh and has the new metal chuck as on the 805…..
I mean I got the 778 and it’s a great upgrade from a supermarket drill. I suppose you get what you pay for but I would say if your buying your first dewalt drill or you are tired of cheap brands then the 778 is good enough. Price wise it was £140 with two batteries, a case and a charger. Think the 805 is much pricier but you get what you pay for….mostly..😅
Dewalt has too many drills and I don't understand why. Before I got into tools, I would just grab whatever was on sale at the local pawn shop, on clearance in a big box store, cheapest from Walmart if I was in a pinch or if it looked "cool and capable." Milwaukee was "too expensive," Dewalt had too many drills, any other brand I had no clue about. Now I realize with all these deals and other great brands like Metabo HPT and their killer deals its no longer wise to go for the cheapest drill. Buy the best deal you can get and go for the top of the line whenever possible. 🔴 I'm in almost every line bc I want to be able to take advantage of clearances and some make better tools than others.
I think that's because of avoiding competition of between big box stores kind of sort. For example, DCD794 (sold at Home Depot) is actually equivalent to DCD708 (sold at Lowe's) but they have a tad bit different design code yet same price range. Same thing happens with high-end DCD999 (HD) vs. DCD998 (Lowe's) and they both are pretty much equivalent in real situation and successor of 996. Also, older models doesn't get wiped out from the market when a successor releases and sometimes sale event do not cover the older models. Clearly, this 778 is an older model of 805. 777 is old model of 800, etc. Yet they are still in the market and discontinued just recently. So, I think we just need to know what is the most recent line-up and aim for those models for going into a sale event.
I really like the light and that would be really useful. I’ve just looked at the price difference and I can get two sets of the 778 with two batteries for less than the 805 with two batteries. 😳
Difference both hammers drills it’s 805 more strength that 778. It’s depend what is your job and what you need. I got drill 805 and 2 powerstack batteries for $200 and it’s not bad price for me 👍🏻
