This was a great video! Thank you! It’s hard enough with DeWalt’s confusing model numbering systems to know which product is the latest release. I suspect they purposely don’t follow a pattern of, say, increasing numbers for new releases just so the older ones continue to sell because that’s what’s still on the shelf at the big box stores. Your video made a purchase decision much more clear for me. Thank you!
I think all of these power tool companies have the same problem- too many models= consumer confusion. Consumer confusion leads to people often times not buying anything because we can't come to a conclusion. Thanks for clearing things up a bit for Dewalt.
Most of their drills are good. Just not all of them make the wisest purchase at current time because of new models that outperform. Glad it was helpful.

I run the DCD805 and a DCD999. I’ve found they cover everything I need on jobs and usually keep the 805 at the house. Might pick up a second 805 on a BOGO deal at Lowe’s.

I have two DCD996’s two 991’s and one 791, all metal ratchet chucks and all XR’s. It’s a lot of drills I know but some are mine and some are supplied by my employer for my maintenance truck when they didn’t know that I already had enough drills ugh. Yep the 996 has been around for a long time now.
I must offer a different view here. AS a man who just finished upgrading all of his Back and yellow tools over the past year, all of that good "buying research" that men do is fresh with me. The DCD 999 is not the top dog. DeWalt may be trying to sell it as such, but that is because they are trying very hard to sell those Brontosaurus batteries they came out with, and those are the ones you need to feed the 999. Trust me when I tell you this, because I am 6 months in the future from a time when I watched 100 head to head competitions and read as many articles before making a choice, and have been running the 998 that beats the pants off of the 999 for half a year now. The 999 is paper tiger. The 998 is the champion of this lineup.
Companies who have such a large confusing product line do this on purpose. They want to confuse the consumer to buy the lesser product, for them to be disappointed when they find out, then spend more money to upgrade to slightly better. For me, I bought the 791 (the Type 3) right before the 800 series came out.

Fantastic reviews. I have been on the Dewalt platform for years but have been going around in circles trying to figure out which model compact hammer drill to buy. Your approach to comparing the different models available is far more logical and clear to follow than anyone else's, including Dewalt! It makes me wonder if they don't know the diferences between all of their models either which is why they have created such a hotch potch. Anyway, you quickly answered my question (the 805). Thank you. Keep up the great work. By the way, I think the reason that you have so many Dewalt drills is because you are a tool junky and they are damn good tools!

Glad it was helpful! I have done impacts for dewalt and drills and impacts with other companies as well. I have plans to do more of these videos in the future, but to give some better context its nice to have owned or at least tried some of the other tools they offer and at this point, i am just not there with saws. Working on it but not there yet.
Before jumping into power tool stuffs... I had this Ryobi 8V drill/driver which didn't even have detachable battery. I got it in 2015 and been assembling IKEA stuff with it. When it comes to 'real' thing happening in my backyard, 8V tool was just horrible. I could not even screw a 1" screw into my shack which is made of dimensional lumber... And then I got DCD800... Holy cow... I was shocked with the power and almost afraid to use it. Never thought to drill into anything outdoor material before, but this DCD800 was making holes to anywhere like butter! Watching this video, I now realized that how much of jump I've made with the DCD800! Now I'm not even thinking buying any furniture but building them!! Why spend hundreds of dollars while I can literally make them! Although furniture I made usually end up a crude compared to real ones, at least they are way better (durable) than IKEA stuff. I'm visiting hardware stores, ReStore, and free wood which I was never thought I would look for before. Yeah, buying DCD800 literally changed part of my life. And I'm really glad! I'm still a silly weekend warrior DIYer, but surely this feels like a new chapter of my journey.
Nice well put together video. What frustrates me the most about DeWalt is their tool kits or assortments. Some will offer an XR impact with a drill that has a cheap plastic chuck and a brushed or brushless circ saw. Another may have an XR drill with an 885 brushed impact. Etc., etc. It gets very annoying trying to find that kit with all the top end tools
Yeah I got burned by a Ridgid kit one time where the free tools that came with the kit were new brushless tools but everything else was brushed. Kits like that always just seem like a way to sell off old stock.
Great video man. I used to hate all the different drills Dewalt has and thought it was dumb. But, the more I see them I think it’s very smart. They give you multiple choices in each category all the way up. I think that’s a good marketing platform as you can give each different customer at each different level multiple choices compared to most others brands only having one base model and one high end model. And it also gives people like you and me the opportunity to have 100 different drills 😂 great info man

I think it has more to do with their wide presence on every major hardware store. The fact they have store exclusive lineups like Power Detect & Xtreme (Lowe's) as well as Atomic and Flexvolt (Home Depot) adds a whole layer of tools to cover the same purpose.
I get the reason they do it but I think its at the detriment of a clear and concise lineup. Give me three solid options instead of having to put in some study time to know which ones are worth it.
I would just ask for some power output rating with battery size listed on drill so you could tell which is good for heavy duty and which for light stuff
This video was very helpful in helping me to learn about the different XR series 1/2 Drills, 1/4 Impact drivers which are what I have purchased not long ago.
And in 2015 it might have made sense to buy it.. but for the price now, might has well go with the smaller, more compact and cheaper (currently) version. Glad it's lasted for you though!
Wow.... Your video really hit the mark. I had the DCD708 ordered.... and returned it before it even arrived and order the DCD800... loll... It arrives tomorrow. The 708 bare was 117$ (canadian$) and the 800 cost me 208$. I "lost" 13$ in return shipping .... so... 208$+13$ = 211$ so almost 100$ for the "switch". Oh welll... you only live once. I've had my previous Dewalt 12v drill+impact combo (dcd710 / dcf815)) for 20+years (both still work great), and my 20v combo dcd785 (hammer drill) / dcf885 for 13 years (both still work great too !). I've had bad experiences with other types of Dewalt tools, such as circular saws, but their drills are flawless and fit my hand perfectly (personal preference). But my old DCD785 (hammer drill) is sooo long and cumbersome that I was always using my smaller 12volt dcd710 which was often out of breath and I'd be swapping batteries from tool to charger all day long. So the DCD800 is perfect to become my #1 go to drill. I did not need the slighly longer/heavier DCD805 (hammer) since I rarely drill holes in concrete and still have my old DCD785 for that and a cheap 100$ chinese rotary hammer for heavier "concrete" tasks. It was perfect.Thanks again for the advice. If I didn't already have a hammer drill, the 805 would have been the perfect choice. But taking both the 805 and 800 in hand at a homedepot, I'm glad I picked the slighly lighter/shorter 800. Thanks again !
I first started with 776, brushed, plastic chuck, 1.5ah battery. Found it not good maybe say it was ok for DIY. Then went and got 995 before the 996 came out think only difference was the light? Got it with 5ah batteries been a great heavy duty drill. Recently needed a second drill for work got 795, I didn't research much just got what kit was on sale only thing i looked for was it had metal chuck, i wasn't expecting much i imagined it would perform somewhere between the 776 and 995, but actually really surprised seems as good as the 995 but smaller more ergonomic weighing less. 995 and imagine same as 996 998 and 999 are big chunky combi drills but will get out performed by SDS drill when it comes to masonry. My thinking is the mid sized drills are nicer for carrying and using for 90% of the jobs, if your doing any strenuous masonry work better having an SDS anyway
Some of the confusion may be due to retailer exclusivity. In the US, atomic and flexvolt are home depot exclusives so there is some redundancy and needless fragmentation. Dcd794 atomic sort of makes dcd793 redundant (794 clutch problems notwithstanding) but it can only only be sold at home depot, so other stores get the 793. Similarly dcf999 flexvolt is very similar to dcd998 power detect but allows home depot to have the "special", probably technically most powerful, drill in the lineup and use the exclusive FV batteries Otherwise theyre not helping by crowding the model numbers so much. The hammer versions typically increment model numbers by 5 over the standard drill driver but its kind of hard to know where older gen end and newer gen products begin - 790, 791 (795, 796 hammers) are older mid range drills, 793, 794 (798, 799 hammers) are newer entry level. Oh you want the hammer version of the older 777? Naturally, thatll be the 778 because why the hell not.
Even they have seen the light. In the last few weeks they announced a cleaning up of their product lines and having one product line for everything. Honestly a big improvement. So far it seems there will still be some exclusivity in terms of Home Depot getting the combo kit version of a new tool and Lowe's getting the tool only for example but having the same tools at both stores is a big improvement.
Wow that's a huge lineup. Yet the newest 20V Max Brushless DCD793 & 798 from Lowe's are missing. I don't think any other brand has that huge of a drill selection, maybe Makita but I'm not sure

Super helpful! A video about the different batteries and different tool compatibility would be interesting also. I am trying to buy a few tools at a time and the different models and batteries will make your head spin! I just got a kit with a DCD999 and a circular saw, + 2 bare tools. I picked up the trim router and grinder. As soon as I did, a deal pops up for the DCD796 with 7 tools! It was virtually the same price so I went down the rabbit hole of the different model numbers and…yikes man!
I'll try to come up with a way to make a video about all the batteries that they offer interesting... I know it will be helpful, but I have to find a way to do it without it being super dry. Yeah, especially when you start looking at those larger combo kits, it can be overwhelming. I feel like there are always a few tools that make a lot of sense and then some others that seem to be prior generations or lesser models. That happened to me with a ridgid kit a few years back.
But even tho I have a 3rd Gen Milwaukee and Flex’s baddest drill I still love all my Dewalts for there power and longevity, especially my 998 Hammer Drill. I grew working with my dad and all I ever saw was a bunch of black and yellow tools so maybe I’ve got a little bias. Great video man
Thanks. I don’t love the size and weight of the big DEWALT drills necessarily and I do think they are in need for an upgrade. But with all that said I do think they run well and I love the versatility of the 3 speed gearbox.
Thanks for very helpful video! I have a DCD995, which has worked fine. My BIG issue is that the design does not allow the chuck to be removed in the “conventional” way. The tool must be disassembled and the chuck removed using gargantuan forces etc. I cannot find any so called service center who will address this issue. Beware of this when considering your purchase!
Awesome video! This video helped me a ton! My friend had the 999 and it's sweet but I'm going to go with the 805 after watching this! They are the same. The 20v on the US is just marketing. It will depend on your needs but my favorite drill and one that is powerful but still compact is the DCD800 or DCD805 if you need the hammer function.

For the vast majority of people that drill will be all you ever need. It's just at the really heavy duty stuff that you feel like you need a little bit more. I think you will be happy though. Glad the video was helpful.
I would imagine you would want a slower, less powerful drill so it’s not going too fast. Under that assumption (and I could be wrong) I like the new atomic for its size (dcd794) but for something more robust I love the DCD800. That’s still compact but heavier and can still get a bunch of stuff done that you would traditionally use a drill for.
Greatly helpful. In the UK both 996 and 999 models are marketed with "XRP" badges. Can't say I've seen or heard of 998, must be a model for the US market. What's the lightest XR 18v for drilling and screw driver jobs? I ask about 18v so utilising my existing batteries and chargers and not buying/carrying another set, thank you
Great video! I’ve been looking for a cordless drill/driver. Mostly going to use the driver and some occasional easier drilling. Seen a few Ryobis and also Dewalts. My local store had the DCD706D2-QW on sale, cheaper than the Ryobi RDD18C. Thought I should get the DeWalt but not sure anymore because of the old 12V battery and the 3/8” chuck on the 706 model
The only concern I have with the dewalt 12v is are they going to continue to support and release new tools on the platform. It's been a while without a release but the tools they have are good, just not the best 12v out there (Milwaukee M12 reigns supreme). But there is a lot to like about the dewalt.

I’ve never gone out and gotten the 805 only because I have so many other hammer drills and don’t do that as often. But it is the proverbial pound for pound champion IMO. And yeah I nearly bit on the power detect this week but I keep holding on to the belief that they are going to come out with a new top drill at some point. Hope you have a great one too man.
The 805 is a lot bigger than the 800 which is what attracted me to the 800 if you get the 805 brother you might as well just get the 998 😂 about 100.00 cheaper than the 999 and you get a 8.0

Even the most powerful hammer drill lack the ability to well hammer drill I'd just buy a rotary hammer drill for concrete and get the 800 for a small compact drill pair that with the 1.7 power stack and man it feels amazing!! Great video..... I love my DCD800. Bought it shortly after it came out. Wanted the battery n charger kit but at the time Acme was sold out.... So just bought the drill n a 5ah battery separate...... N used the charger that came with my atomic 😂
My most recent drill was in a drill driver kit kinda disappointed the batteries were 2 amp with no fuel gauge the fuel gauge is the best feature. my drill is 777 have you tested that model at all? they really need to put output power ratings on the drills, so you know which to use for a big hole.
Dewalt enter Indonesian market with limited various series, so I use the DCD 7781 (made in China, 3 years guarantee) and DCD 805 (made in Mexico, no guarantee)... I wish the other series will enter the market soon... Thanks a lot for the introduction and tests 👌🏼😁
The DCD778 is the older generation of this drill and the 798 is the newer generation. I haven't used either of these drills but based on what I can find, the 777 would be similar to the 778. Overall it's a decent drill but not super powerful. The 798 is a little bit more powerful, comparable to the DCD794 but it's overall an inch shorter than the 778.
Extremely helpful video; no one else tackles these confusing marketing driven issues so well. Too hard to find the model drill and battery combination. Forget Dewalt and their marketing. Makita and Milwaukee are a better choice
I think Bosch is as crazy as Dewalt with the variety of drills they have and their grinders too. I can understand why they are doing this, it's all about choices. Great video. Subbed
Thanks. I think Bosch the further complications in other territories with the green Bosch tools that are lower end. Their drill lineup does have a lot of options.
I think a video with only one drill in each category would be nice. Think of it as the only few drills DeWalt should sell! It would be useful to me to know a litte about their batteries and chargers too. I think it's very odd how little information the sellers, and even DeWalt give about such thing. But that gives an excellent reason for videos about it, I guess. Also, good tools are fun!

I don’t think I have the 6.0 XR battery and while you are probably correct based on other videos I’ve seen, just struggle to drop the money on it at this point when I already have the 999. Thanks for watching man!
I appreciate the reviews, but I felt like you left a big review point on the table... clutch sensitivity. I saw another video compare the clutch sensitivity of the DeWalt against other manufacturers and the DeWalt feel short. But got me wondering which Dewalt was in that competition. Which then got me wondering if all dealt clutches perform as poorly as the dealt clutch in that video. Just really which you added a segment for that. Would have made the comparison that much more informative. Thanks for what you did provide though.
I have done clutch sensitivity in two other videos, both of which came after this review. One was the installation driver video where the dewalt 12v 5 in 1 did very well in both clutch sensitivity and consistency. In a more recent video, I did it with compact drills (last weeks video) and in that neither dewalt was outright terrible but also not one of the better ones. That would have just covered the two atomic drills in the testing (794 and 799) but I will be sure to include it in the larger reviews that I do in the future.
It's less that there's a vast confusing lineup but rather they probably just pump out newer models with the expectation that users may move on eventually and a tool with a job to do isn't going to last forever. They are actually consumables :) No matter how much tender-care-and-maintenance someone can put into their favorite tools: the gearings will shatter eventually and moving parts will succumb to fatigue and need replacement parts that might not exist in the future.
I have no issue with them putting out new models but then they routinely carry on with older models for many years, making it harder for a newer shopper to know which is their best option.
Great video, I had a considerable amount of time wrapped up in research and conversation on the job trying to decipher the variation between dewalt drill models. Having this info condensed into one video is a valuable resource for people getting into the trades, or just being new to the platform. Excellent content Taylor as usual 👏
There isn't really an issue dewalt make a few cheap models for people who use a drill occasionally think DIY. Then you have a selection of light to moderate drills for trade users, some of whom use the drill rather than an impact to drive screws so don't want or need a heavy drill. Last, you have the top end powerful drills these are what you want if like me you do a lot of repetitive steel drilling and use long auger bits and the like. I use an impact rather than the drill for screws but want maximum power from a drill, not necessarily the lightest weight. I use a dcd999.
I think that the issue that comes from their lineup is just lack of clear segmentation in those product groupings. Whether it's the different products at different stores or continuing to sell outgoing models for a long time, it creates confusion to new buyers. They do seem to be taking steps to clarifying things a bit recently, but they still have a ways to go.
I think you would be hard pressed to find a drill that would do it right and consistent using the clutch each time. That’s why they have drywall specific screw guns that stop when it gets to the surface of the drywall. That would be my vote but you can do it with drills and impact you just have to use the trigger to control things more.
All of these tools except for the 12v offerings will run on any 20v max lithium ion battery. As for which they will run best on, if run time isn’t a concern I really like the small Powerstack for quick jobs where I can still get decent power but don’t need extreme run time. If run time is what you are after I wouldn’t go less than a 5ah battery.
Sadly on DEWALT they have plastic outer chucks on their lower end lines. That’s one thing I have always appreciated about Milwaukee. Even there entry level brushed drill has an all metal chuck.
@ 13:23. Wholeheartedly agree, and this is coming from an owner of the DCD 998 PD drill. It’s big, but it’s a beast. No doubt the FV ( 999 ) drill is powerful, and may do a bit better than the Power Detect, but as I have stated on other videos on TH-camy, why would you want to ‘cart around’ and handle a drill, with a heavier battery. I own FlexVolt tools as well, and have weighed the difference on a digital scale, and if memory serves, the FV battery is about a pound heavier, Thant the XR 8.0 battery! Measure it to make sure, but my money is on the PD. One day I went out to my outside workbench, and was shocked to discover I had left my DCD 796 out in the elements, ( idiot alert! ) and we had received quite a storm during its excursion! I removed the battery, and let it sit for a day, and then it got some of my special LOW TEMP basting in the oven, which led to a slight melting of one of the anti mar pads on the side. Drill works like a champ. Just thought I’d share. Great Reviews and always like to read some of the great comments by fellow viewers! 👍✌
The 6ah Flexvolt that is sold with the 999 weighs 2 lbs 5.4 oz. The 8ah XR battery weighs 2 lbs 1.5 oz. So yes it is heavier. I think if you don’t have need for 60v tools then get XR but if you do have those the go with Flexvolt.

I stand by my reasoning of the weight difference, as I think One would need to run the 9.0 FV batteries, to totally dominate the PD drills?! Yeah I don’t own a 9 ah battery right now. There gets a point where I want to have them all for testing there just aren’t enough funds to go around. I am a proponent of using the smallest tool/battery combo that makes sense for the job. I do a lot of testing with the most powerful battery but at the end of the day , a lot of tasks don’t need that.
Very well made video. I am planning to get my first drill machine and eyeing on compact XR 800 series. Do you think the 800 series can be used on concrete or metal?
For concrete or masonry you would want to get the 805 and I think for a lot of people it would be sufficient. But if you plan on doing larger holes it might be worth it going up a step
Yes the 791 is the compact XR drill a generation prior to the 800. Still a quality drill but if shopping in the market for something new and they are equally priced I would suggest the 800. But the 791 is still one of their more quality drills.
Do you have a preference between the 800 and 805? I don't really have any idea about masonry work, but I felt like the hammer option on the 805 (and 99x) is really slow? Is that pretty normal operating speed for that kind of work? Or would it be better to just get the smaller (and maybe cheaper) non-hammer variant, and save hammer duty for a proper SDS drill? I'm thinking I'd love to get the 5-in-1 installation driver kit, but not sure if I even need a full power drill just for general home use. Most of my needs are the impact tools for automotive work, but I still wouldn't mind having a good drill on hand. Just not sure where my sweet spot is.
The 800 is very compact and when you pair it with a power stack battery it’s really just about the perfect combo. I have a more powerful drill so I don’t view the 805 as a necessity for that reason I would go with the 800. If all you are doing is smaller wall anchors the 805 will be sufficient but if you are wanting to do larger stuff the dedicated SDS will be the better option.
@TinkerWithTools Yeah, probably just simple wall anchors at most. So I figure it might be nice to have, even if it's not nearly as effective as an SDS. Looks like the 805 is a tiny bit cheaper, or otherwise the same price as the 800, so maybe I'll go for that. Thank you for your insight!
I just got the 777… new to drills. My question is is it a good starter drill for like small things like building/putting cabinets and furniture together?
For the things you are talking about, it will do just fine. It may not win any speed competitions against bigger, strong and more expensive drills but it will certainly do just fine.

I wanted a powerful drill for all materials but now I have a tennis elbow and I suffer from the weight. What would you recommend for case that I need a lighter drill for relatively simple drillings like pilot holes etc.? (For heavier tasks which are less common I'll use the 996). Is DCD794 good for such case? Other model? (no hammer mode needed). Thanks!
Normally I would push people to the DCD800 because I feel that it blends the size that a lot of people like but the power that can go some what toe to toe with the 996, but it's heavier than the 794. If you already have the 996 and it will continue to work for you then the 794 is a decent drill do downsize with and it will keep the weight down. The 12v drill is also small and even lighter but it's on a different platform.

@@XDIY if you do end up getting new batteries. I would look at the small power stack. It brings some power and pep to the tools but really keeps the weight down. And now they have been out long enough to have some good pricing.
Great Video, got a sub from me. Only issue i have was not testing the 996 with at least the 8ah battery. In my experience most XR tools get a noticeable performance boost moving from packs with the 18650 cell to ones with the 21700s.
DCD800 (compact XR) if you want just a drill driver or the DCD805 if you want the hammer drill. It’s the best drill unless you just need top tier power.

Thanks very much for doing this video. It's crazy how I can't find a simple matrix on all models and the ones I did find were difficult to view. Do you think the Compact XR would have sufficient power if I ever want to drill into concrete typically found in garages?
DEWALT recommends a max capacity of 1/4” for the DCD805 in concrete. I find that for occasional use you can typically do a little more, but anytime you take exceed those recommendations it is possible to put too much strain in the drill. If you plan on doing a lot the more robust XR drills might be advisable

I believe the 791 is a drill driver only. The 796 should be a hammer drill. Both should do stuff minimal stuff that’s not too big of diameter on the bit just fine.
I am guessing there are things that we don’t consider as the end user like having different skus for different locations to prevent or reduce price matching. But you are right, from our perspective it’s likely not necessary.
In this video I mention the DCD794 which is the atomic version sold at Home Depot. Internally and power wise they are the same drill. So anything you see for the DCD794 would ring true for the 793, it’s just over a 1/2” longer I believe.
Depends on the application. If I only had one drill and thought I would drill in masonry at some point I would have a hammer drill. Where I have more than one I tend to buy the hammer drill version of full size drills and drill driver for compact. A drill driver is typically but not always shorter than the hammer drill version. Smaller hammer drills can drill in masonry but you will be limited on the size of hole you can drill reliably.
Are you talking about the brand flex or the flexvolt batteries? If it’s about DEWALT flexvolt batteries then yes they will work but it will probably feel like an anchor on the bottom of the tool.
3 speed gearbox is what makes the magic happen in the premier dewalt drills. Always has been. Speed 2 is for wood drilling. 3 is for hammer drilling and sometimes metal drilling. Speed 3 doesn't typically Speed up wood boring it just bogs the drill and consumes battery and make heat. I'm disappointed that you didn't show what difference is made between all the battery and drill combos that you have on display.
I do have other videos that focus on the way different tools perform on the batteries... the focus of this video was more on the drills specifically and where they fit in the heirachy of dewalt's lineup.

It’s hard enough with DeWalt’s confusing model numbering systems to know which product is the latest release. I suspect they purposely don’t follow a pattern of, say, increasing numbers for new releases just so the older ones continue to sell because that’s what’s still on the shelf at the big box stores.

I think all of these power tool companies have the same problem- too many models= consumer confusion. Consumer confusion leads to people often times not buying anything because we can't come to a conclusion. Thanks for clearing things up a bit for Dewalt.

I run the DCD805 and a DCD999. I’ve found they cover everything I need on jobs and usually keep the 805 at the house. Might pick up a second 805 on a BOGO deal at Lowe’s.

I have two DCD996’s two 991’s and one 791, all metal ratchet chucks and all XR’s. It’s a lot of drills I know but some are mine and some are supplied by my employer for my maintenance truck when they didn’t know that I already had enough drills ugh. Yep the 996 has been around for a long time now.
I must offer a different view here. AS a man who just finished upgrading all of his Back and yellow tools over the past year, all of that good "buying research" that men do is fresh with me.
The DCD 999 is not the top dog. DeWalt may be trying to sell it as such, but that is because they are trying very hard to sell those Brontosaurus batteries they came out with, and those are the ones you need to feed the 999. Trust me when I tell you this, because I am 6 months in the future from a time when I watched 100 head to head competitions and read as many articles before making a choice, and have been running the 998 that beats the pants off of the 999 for half a year now.
The 999 is paper tiger. The 998 is the champion of this lineup.
Companies who have such a large confusing product line do this on purpose. They want to confuse the consumer to buy the lesser product, for them to be disappointed when they find out, then spend more money to upgrade to slightly better. For me, I bought the 791 (the Type 3) right before the 800 series came out.
This is why DeWalt is getting whooped by Milwaukees very clear and easy to understand product

Fantastic reviews. I have been on the Dewalt platform for years but have been going around in circles trying to figure out which model compact hammer drill to buy. Your approach to comparing the different models available is far more logical and clear to follow than anyone else's, including Dewalt! It makes me wonder if they don't know the diferences between all of their models either which is why they have created such a hotch potch. Anyway, you quickly answered my question (the 805). I have plans to do more of these videos in the future, but to give some better context its nice to have owned or at least tried some of the other tools they offer and at this point, i am just not there with saws. Working on it but not there yet.
Before jumping into power tool stuffs... I had this Ryobi 8V drill/driver which didn't even have detachable battery. I got it in 2015 and been assembling IKEA stuff with it. When it comes to 'real' thing happening in my backyard, 8V tool was just horrible. I could not even screw a 1" screw into my shack which is made of dimensional lumber... And then I got DCD800...
Holy cow... I was shocked with the power and almost afraid to use it. Never thought to drill into anything outdoor material before, but this DCD800 was making holes to anywhere like butter! Watching this video, I now realized that how much of jump I've made with the DCD800! Now I'm not even thinking buying any furniture but building them!! Why spend hundreds of dollars while I can literally make them! Although furniture I made usually end up a crude compared to real ones, at least they are way better (durable) than IKEA stuff. I'm visiting hardware stores, ReStore, and free wood which I was never thought I would look for before.
Yeah, buying DCD800 literally changed part of my life. And I'm really glad! I'm still a silly weekend warrior DIYer, but surely this feels like a new chapter of my journey.

Nice well put together video. What frustrates me the most about DeWalt is their tool kits or assortments. Some will offer an XR impact with a drill that has a cheap plastic chuck and a brushed or brushless circ saw. Another may have an XR drill with an 885 brushed impact. Etc., etc. It gets very annoying trying to find that kit with all the top end tools
Yeah I got burned by a Ridgid kit one time where the free tools that came with the kit were new brushless tools but everything else was brushed. Kits like that always just seem like a way to sell off old stock.
Great video man. I used to hate all the different drills Dewalt has and thought it was dumb. But, the more I see them I think it’s very smart. They give you multiple choices in each category all the way up. I think that’s a good marketing platform as you can give each different customer at each different level multiple choices compared to most others brands only having one base model and one high end model. And it also gives people like you and me the opportunity to have 100 different drills 😂 great info man

I think it has more to do with their wide presence on every major hardware store.
The fact they have store exclusive lineups like Power Detect & Xtreme (Lowe's) as well as Atomic and Flexvolt (Home Depot) adds a whole layer of tools to cover the same purpose.
I get the reason they do it but I think its at the detriment of a clear and concise lineup. Give me three solid options instead of having to put in some study time to know which ones are worth it.
I would just ask for some power output rating with battery size listed on drill so you could tell which is good for heavy duty and which for light stuff

For what it was in 2015 when I got the 1st Gen brushed 12max was awesome, I've beat the heck out of it for 8+ years and it's still ticking.
And in 2015 it might have made sense to buy it.. but for the price now, might has well go with the smaller, more compact and cheaper (currently) version. Glad it's lasted for you though!

I had the DCD708 ordered.... and returned it before it even arrived and order the DCD800... loll... It arrives tomorrow. The 708 bare was 117$ (canadian$) and the 800 cost me 208$. I "lost" 13$ in return shipping .... so... 208$+13$ = 211$ so almost 100$ for the "switch".

I've had my previous Dewalt 12v drill+impact combo (dcd710 / dcf815)) for 20+years (both still work great), and my 20v combo dcd785 (hammer drill) / dcf885 for 13 years (both still work great too !).
I've had bad experiences with other types of Dewalt tools, such as circular saws, but their drills are flawless and fit my hand perfectly (personal preference).
But my old DCD785 (hammer drill) is sooo long and cumbersome that I was always using my smaller 12volt dcd710 which was often out of breath and I'd be swapping batteries from tool to charger all day long.
So the DCD800 is perfect to become my #1 go to drill. I did not need the slighly longer/heavier DCD805 (hammer) since I rarely drill holes in concrete and still have my old DCD785 for that and a cheap 100$ chinese rotary hammer for heavier "concrete" tasks.

If I didn't already have a hammer drill, the 805 would have been the perfect choice. But taking both the 805 and 800 in hand at a homedepot, I'm glad I picked the slighly lighter/shorter 800. Thanks again !
I first started with 776, brushed, plastic chuck, 1.5ah battery. Found it not good maybe say it was ok for DIY.
Then went and got 995 before the 996 came out think only difference was the light? Got it with 5ah batteries been a great heavy duty drill.
Recently needed a second drill for work got 795, I didn't research much just got what kit was on sale only thing i looked for was it had metal chuck, i wasn't expecting much i imagined it would perform somewhere between the 776 and 995, but actually really surprised seems as good as the 995 but smaller more ergonomic weighing less.
995 and imagine same as 996 998 and 999 are big chunky combi drills but will get out performed by SDS drill when it comes to masonry. My thinking is the mid sized drills are nicer for carrying and using for 90% of the jobs, if your doing any strenuous masonry work better having an SDS anyway
Some of the confusion may be due to retailer exclusivity. In the US, atomic and flexvolt are home depot exclusives so there is some redundancy and needless fragmentation. Dcd794 atomic sort of makes dcd793 redundant (794 clutch problems notwithstanding) but it can only only be sold at home depot, so other stores get the 793. Similarly dcf999 flexvolt is very similar to dcd998 power detect but allows home depot to have the "special", probably technically most powerful, drill in the lineup and use the exclusive FV batteries
Otherwise theyre not helping by crowding the model numbers so much. The hammer versions typically increment model numbers by 5 over the standard drill driver but its kind of hard to know where older gen end and newer gen products begin - 790, 791 (795, 796 hammers) are older mid range drills, 793, 794 (798, 799 hammers) are newer entry level. Oh you want the hammer version of the older 777? Naturally, thatll be the 778 because why the hell not.
Even they have seen the light. In the last few weeks they announced a cleaning up of their product lines and having one product line for everything. Honestly a big improvement. So far it seems there will still be some exclusivity in terms of Home Depot getting the combo kit version of a new tool and Lowe's getting the tool only for example but having the same tools at both stores is a big improvement.

Super helpful! A video about the different batteries and different tool compatibility would be interesting also. I am trying to buy a few tools at a time and the different models and batteries will make your head spin! I just got a kit with a DCD999 and a circular saw, + 2 bare tools. I picked up the trim router and grinder. As soon as I did, a deal pops up for the DCD796 with 7 tools! It was virtually the same price so I went down the rabbit hole of the different model numbers and…yikes man!
I'll try to come up with a way to make a video about all the batteries that they offer interesting... I know it will be helpful, but I have to find a way to do it without it being super dry. Yeah, especially when you start looking at those larger combo kits, it can be overwhelming. I feel like there are always a few tools that make a lot of sense and then some others that seem to be prior generations or lesser models. That happened to me with a ridgid kit a few years back.
As a mechanic who works in tight spaces the 805 has been amazing for me. Cuts through metal like butter with good drill bits and cutting fluid.
I love the compactness of that drill. The 800 even more so if you don’t need to the hammer function.

But even tho I have a 3rd Gen Milwaukee and Flex’s baddest drill I still love all my Dewalts for there power and longevity, especially my 998 Hammer Drill. I grew working with my dad and all I ever saw was a bunch of black and yellow tools so maybe I’ve got a little bias. Great video man
Thanks. I don’t love the size and weight of the big DEWALT drills necessarily and I do think they are in need for an upgrade. But with all that said I do think they run well and I love the versatility of the 3 speed gearbox.
Thanks for very helpful video! I have a DCD995, which has worked fine. My BIG issue is that the design does not allow the chuck to be removed in the “conventional” way. The tool must be disassembled and the chuck removed using gargantuan forces etc. I cannot find any so called service center who will address this issue. Beware of this when considering your purchase!

They are the same. The 20v on the US is just marketing. It will depend on your needs but my favorite drill and one that is powerful but still compact is the DCD800 or DCD805 if you need the hammer function.

I would imagine you would want a slower, less powerful drill so it’s not going too fast. Under that assumption (and I could be wrong) I like the new atomic for its size (dcd794) but for something more robust I love the DCD800. That’s still compact but heavier and can still get a bunch of stuff done that you would traditionally use a drill for.

Great video! I’ve been looking for a cordless drill/driver. Mostly going to use the driver and some occasional easier drilling. Seen a few Ryobis and also Dewalts. My local store had the DCD706D2-QW on sale, cheaper than the Ryobi RDD18C. Thought I should get the DeWalt but not sure anymore because of the old 12V battery and the 3/8” chuck on the 706 model
The only concern I have with the dewalt 12v is are they going to continue to support and release new tools on the platform. It's been a while without a release but the tools they have are good, just not the best 12v out there (Milwaukee M12 reigns supreme). But there is a lot to like about the dewalt.

I’ve never gone out and gotten the 805 only because I have so many other hammer drills and don’t do that as often. But it is the proverbial pound for pound champion IMO. And yeah I nearly bit on the power detect this week but I keep holding on to the belief that they are going to come out with a new top drill at some point.

The 805 is a lot bigger than the 800 which is what attracted me to the 800 if you get the 805 brother you might as well just get the 998 😂 about 100.00 cheaper than the 999 and you get a 8.0

Even the most powerful hammer drill lack the ability to well hammer drill I'd just buy a rotary hammer drill for concrete and get the 800 for a small compact drill pair that with the 1.7 power stack and man it feels amazing!! My most recent drill was in a drill driver kit kinda disappointed the batteries were 2 amp with no fuel gauge the fuel gauge is the best feature. my drill is 777 have you tested that model at all? they really need to put output power ratings on the drills, so you know which to use for a big hole.
The 777 was the first review I ever did... if you end up watching it, just remember that... it's pretty bad. not a bad drill for light to medium work.

I believe the 793 is an update of the 777 for Lowe’s but it’s very similar to the 794 from what I can tell.
Dewalt enter Indonesian market with limited various series, so I use the DCD 7781 (made in China, 3 years guarantee) and DCD 805 (made in Mexico, no guarantee)... I wish the other series will enter the market soon... Thanks a lot for the introduction and tests 👌🏼😁

What about the DCD778 vs 798B hammer drills? They appear identical except for the light position.
The DCD778 is the older generation of this drill and the 798 is the newer generation. I haven't used either of these drills but based on what I can find, the 777 would be similar to the 778. Overall it's a decent drill but not super powerful. The 798 is a little bit more powerful, comparable to the DCD794 but it's overall an inch shorter than the 778.
Extremely helpful video; no one else tackles these confusing marketing driven issues so well. Too hard to find the model drill and battery combination. Forget Dewalt and their marketing. Makita and Milwaukee are a better choice

I have tried that one in store but never owned it. It always seemed like a nice drill though.
I appreciate the reviews, but I felt like you left a big review point on the table... clutch sensitivity. I saw another video compare the clutch sensitivity of the DeWalt against other manufacturers and the DeWalt feel short. But got me wondering which Dewalt was in that competition. Which then got me wondering if all dealt clutches perform as poorly as the dealt clutch in that video. Just really which you added a segment for that. Would have made the comparison that much more informative. Thanks for what you did provide though.
I have done clutch sensitivity in two other videos, both of which came after this review. One was the installation driver video where the dewalt 12v 5 in 1 did very well in both clutch sensitivity and consistency. In a more recent video, I did it with compact drills (last weeks video) and in that neither dewalt was outright terrible but also not one of the better ones. That would have just covered the two atomic drills in the testing (794 and 799) but I will be sure to include it in the larger reviews that I do in the future.
It's less that there's a vast confusing lineup but rather they probably just pump out newer models with the expectation that users may move on eventually and a tool with a job to do isn't going to last forever. They are actually consumables :)
No matter how much tender-care-and-maintenance someone can put into their favorite tools: the gearings will shatter eventually and moving parts will succumb to fatigue and need replacement parts that might not exist in the future.
I have no issue with them putting out new models but then they routinely carry on with older models for many years, making it harder for a newer shopper to know which is their best option.

There isn't really an issue dewalt make a few cheap models for people who use a drill occasionally think DIY. Then you have a selection of light to moderate drills for trade users, some of whom use the drill rather than an impact to drive screws so don't want or need a heavy drill. Last, you have the top end powerful drills these are what you want if like me you do a lot of repetitive steel drilling and use long auger bits and the like.
I use an impact rather than the drill for screws but want maximum power from a drill, not necessarily the lightest weight. I use a dcd999.
I think that the issue that comes from their lineup is just lack of clear segmentation in those product groupings. Whether it's the different products at different stores or continuing to sell outgoing models for a long time, it creates confusion to new buyers. They do seem to be taking steps to clarifying things a bit recently, but they still have a ways to go.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a drill that would do it right and consistent using the clutch each time. That’s why they have drywall specific screw guns that stop when it gets to the surface of the drywall. That would be my vote but you can do it with drills and impact you just have to use the trigger to control things more.
The 999 runs best on the 9ah flexvolt in my personal opinion.

All of these tools except for the 12v offerings will run on any 20v max lithium ion battery. As for which they will run best on, if run time isn’t a concern I really like the small Powerstack for quick jobs where I can still get decent power but don’t need extreme run time. If run time is what you are after I wouldn’t go less than a 5ah battery.

Deeply regret getting the hammer drill with the plastic chuck. For some reason I thought all 20v hammer drills were metal chucks.
Sadly on DEWALT they have plastic outer chucks on their lower end lines. That’s one thing I have always appreciated about Milwaukee. Even there entry level brushed drill has an all metal chuck.

@ 13:23. Wholeheartedly agree, and this is coming from an owner of the DCD 998 PD drill. It’s big, but it’s a beast. No doubt the FV ( 999 ) drill is powerful, and may do a bit better than the Power Detect, but as I have stated on other videos on TH-camy, why would you want to ‘cart around’ and handle a drill, with a heavier battery. I own FlexVolt tools as well, and have weighed the difference on a digital scale, and if memory serves, the FV battery is about a pound heavier, Thant the XR 8.0 battery! Measure it to make sure, but my money is on the PD.
One day I went out to my outside workbench, and was shocked to discover I had left my DCD 796 out in the elements, ( idiot alert! ) and we had received quite a storm during its excursion! I removed the battery, and let it sit for a day, and then it got some of my special LOW TEMP basting in the oven, which led to a slight melting of one of the anti mar pads on the side. Drill works like a champ. Just thought I’d share. Great Reviews and always like to read some of the great comments by fellow viewers! 👍✌
The 6ah Flexvolt that is sold with the 999 weighs 2 lbs 5.4 oz. The 8ah XR battery weighs 2 lbs 1.5 oz. So yes it is heavier. I think if you don’t have need for 60v tools then get XR but if you do have those the go with Flexvolt.

Your comparison tests are really good, and I couldn’t help but note the slight differences in the outcome of the FV vs PD drills? I stand by my reasoning of the weight difference, as I think One would need to run the 9.0 FV batteries, to totally dominate the PD drills?! Yeah I don’t own a 9 ah battery right now. There gets a point where I want to have them all for testing there just aren’t enough funds to go around.
I am a proponent of using the smallest tool/battery combo that makes sense for the job. I do a lot of testing with the most powerful battery but at the end of the day , a lot of tasks don’t need that.
Very well made video. I am planning to get my first drill machine and eyeing on compact XR 800 series. Do you think the 800 series can be used on concrete or metal?
For concrete or masonry you would want to get the 805 and I think for a lot of people it would be sufficient. But if you plan on doing larger holes it might be worth it going up a step
I have the XR-20-Volt DCD791D2 drill. I didn't see it in your video. Maybe I missed it. I assume its similar to the 800 series?
Yes the 791 is the compact XR drill a generation prior to the 800. Still a quality drill but if shopping in the market for something new and they are equally priced I would suggest the 800. But the 791 is still one of their more quality drills.
Do you have a preference between the 800 and 805? I don't really have any idea about masonry work, but I felt like the hammer option on the 805 (and 99x) is really slow? Is that pretty normal operating speed for that kind of work? Or would it be better to just get the smaller (and maybe cheaper) non-hammer variant, and save hammer duty for a proper SDS drill?
I'm thinking I'd love to get the 5-in-1 installation driver kit, but not sure if I even need a full power drill just for general home use. Most of my needs are the impact tools for automotive work, but I still wouldn't mind having a good drill on hand. Just not sure where my sweet spot is.
The 800 is very compact and when you pair it with a power stack battery it’s really just about the perfect combo. I have a more powerful drill so I don’t view the 805 as a necessity for that reason I would go with the 800. If all you are doing is smaller wall anchors the 805 will be sufficient but if you are wanting to do larger stuff the dedicated SDS will be the better option.
@TinkerWithTools Yeah, probably just simple wall anchors at most. So I figure it might be nice to have, even if it's not nearly as effective as an SDS.
Looks like the 805 is a tiny bit cheaper, or otherwise the same price as the 800, so maybe I'll go for that.

For the things you are talking about, it will do just fine. It may not win any speed competitions against bigger, strong and more expensive drills but it will certainly do just fine.

Both are awesome but the 996 is heavy. I wanted a powerful drill for all materials but now I have a tennis elbow and I suffer from the weight.
What would you recommend for case that I need a lighter drill for relatively simple drillings like pilot holes etc.? (For heavier tasks which are less common I'll use the 996).
Is DCD794 good for such case? Other model? (no hammer mode needed). Thanks!
Normally I would push people to the DCD800 because I feel that it blends the size that a lot of people like but the power that can go some what toe to toe with the 996, but it's heavier than the 794. If you already have the 996 and it will continue to work for you then the 794 is a decent drill do downsize with and it will keep the weight down. The 12v drill is also small and even lighter but it's on a different platform.

@@XDIY if you do end up getting new batteries. I would look at the small power stack. It brings some power and pep to the tools but really keeps the weight down. And now they have been out long enough to have some good pricing.

Great Video, got a sub from me. Only issue i have was not testing the 996 with at least the 8ah battery. In my experience most XR tools get a noticeable performance boost moving from packs with the 18650 cell to ones with the 21700s.

DCD800 (compact XR) if you want just a drill driver or the DCD805 if you want the hammer drill. It’s the best drill unless you just need top tier power.

I have dcd 791 and the bit is stuck in the chuck... how do I fix it or should I just buy a new drill...
Let me do some research and get back to you. I have gotten bits unstuck from impact drivers but I haven’t had a drill chuck jam like that before.

I have a 790 and 796. 795 is a hammer version of 790 , 796 is the upgrade for 795 so basically they're the same.

Do you think the Compact XR would have sufficient power if I ever want to drill into concrete typically found in garages?
Are you talking about a concrete floor or more like concrete block walls?
DEWALT recommends a max capacity of 1/4” for the DCD805 in concrete. I find that for occasional use you can typically do a little more, but anytime you take exceed those recommendations it is possible to put too much strain in the drill. If you plan on doing a lot the more robust XR drills might be advisable

I believe the 791 is a drill driver only. The 796 should be a hammer drill. Both should do stuff minimal stuff that’s not too big of diameter on the bit just fine.
I still question if a line up like this is really needed , when the differences between some are minimum at best
I am guessing there are things that we don’t consider as the end user like having different skus for different locations to prevent or reduce price matching. But you are right, from our perspective it’s likely not necessary.

How does the dcd793 fit into Dewalts lineup? Is it just a Lowes 794?
Yes in terms of performance but it is a bigger drill in terms of length. Atomic is still shorter.
I am looking at a deal for a drill at Lowes that has a DCD793 but I can't find any reviews of it. Does anyone know anything about this drill?
In this video I mention the DCD794 which is the atomic version sold at Home Depot. Internally and power wise they are the same drill. So anything you see for the DCD794 would ring true for the 793, it’s just over a 1/2” longer I believe.

What’s better hammer or non hammer?
Depends on the application. If I only had one drill and thought I would drill in masonry at some point I would have a hammer drill. Where I have more than one I tend to buy the hammer drill version of full size drills and drill driver for compact. A drill driver is typically but not always shorter than the hammer drill version. Smaller hammer drills can drill in masonry but you will be limited on the size of hole you can drill reliably.

Are you talking about the brand flex or the flexvolt batteries? If it’s about DEWALT flexvolt batteries then yes they will work but it will probably feel like an anchor on the bottom of the tool.

3 speed gearbox is what makes the magic happen in the premier dewalt drills. Always has been. Speed 2 is for wood drilling. 3 is for hammer drilling and sometimes metal drilling. Speed 3 doesn't typically Speed up wood boring it just bogs the drill and consumes battery and make heat. I'm disappointed that you didn't show what difference is made between all the battery and drill combos that you have on display.
I do have other videos that focus on the way different tools perform on the batteries... the focus of this video was more on the drills specifically and where they fit in the heirachy of dewalt's lineup.
