I'm surprised you guys never point out how much of a hilarious sociopath Dr. Frankenstein is in this movie. Like how he "logicially" believes that the monster is all murdery, because of Paul. So it's all Paul's fault, not Victor. Dr. Frankenstein casually blames Paul twice in this movie to his face.
I understand about the person who lost his son. I lost my son, Matthew, 12 years ago. Eventually I discovered Matt and Craig, and watching them makes me laugh. Matthew loved films and I think he would have fit right in. So watching the guys gives me some comfort, I've been a faithful viewer for about 8 years now.

Another Hammer movie I’d be so curious for you guys to watch (or talk about if you’ve seen it) is Captain Cronos. He’s a pulpy vampire hunter that predates his more famous contemporaries like Blade, Buffy, or Vampire Hunter D. Have you seen it?
Captain Kronos makes me sad. So many people I know like it a lot but it always misses with me - I don’t hate it, but it seems just as lackluster and kind of half-assed as so much of Hammer’s ‘70s output before the wheels came off. I’ve tried a couple times, ‘cuz there’s always Caroline Munro to gaze at, and I’m just missing what everyone else seems to like about it. I can’t even get excited about the great Bill Hobbs’ fights as I feel like his work was captured better in every other film he worked on. I want to say it was Brian Clemens’ first time behind the camera on a movie and he would have gotten better with his next one, but this turned out to be it. 😔 I dunno, maybe someday this one will hit me right.

These two things were never seen in horror (at least not to this degree) and made Hammer horrors massive successes. I've watched a lot of them and feel the same way - what's the big deal? They are very talky and have very little action. But much like Halloween (1978), all the slasher films that followed and copied the style/beats had to keep upping the ante as far as violence and gore is concerned, so now the original is very tame is comparison and has very little thrill for the now jaded horror audience (although I think Halloween still has much to offer entertainment-wise). I think that's what happened to Hammer - we've just seen it so many times afterwards that it just doesn't have the same effect it once did. BTW the Hammer Frankenstein series was always about and focus on the doctor and his evilness- NOT the monster like the Universal films

There was a short period in Disney history where they made some wierd scary movies, most people have seen Something Wicked This Way Comes, which you did an episode on. But did you see Watcher in the Woods? Such a wierd movie. Very scary when I was a kid.

Have you seen The Duel (1971)? It was at the beginning of his career, but it may be Spielberg's Psycho. An amazing, very tension thriller made on a microscopic budget.

Hey! Cool - you read my Magic comment. To follow up on WHY I think Wilder would be a better choice: while I like Hopkins, I always feel like I KNOW he's crazy from the get-go and telegraphs it from the start (like Jack Nicolson in The Shinning - there's no build up or reveal, its just there and you know its there). I like how Hopkins played the role but just felt like I would have like some doubt - some build up to the craziness that would slowly present itself. From the very first moment he appears I'm like "I never want to be in the same room alone with this guy" and I just feel like Wilder would have made the character more likable and disarming so when the murderous madness does present itself, its too late to react. That is all. Thanks again and love the show!

There seems to be a kind of breed that certain British actors fall into: the tall, slender, charming, with natural stage presence. There's Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett, Richard E. Grant, possibly Hugh Laurie and Jeremy Irons. They all have that and somehow have that feather wild hair during chaotic type scenes. lol She's a super freak, super freak, FrankenfreakY woow!
Question: is the cut from Frankenstein's reacting to hearing the monster kill the maid to Frankenstein's asking for the marmalade in the film or was that your edit, Matt? I just wondered whether the cut inspired the similar shift of scene in "Young Frankenstein" to the breakfast table. "Kipper?"
The other "genius" trope that is annoyingly overused these days is writing on glass windows (usually math calculations). Did that begin with A Beautiful Mind, or did I just not notice it before then?
I know you two normally talk about films on this show, but I’m wondering if you’ve seen Netflix’s show Squid Game? It’s a Korean thriller about a deathmatch game show for people deep in debt. It’s a bit heavy-handed in its anticapitalism (well deserved), but it broke my heart, even though I knew what kind of show it was. I thought it gave the viewer just enough humanity to make the characters believable, and to stop it from being totally grimdark.
Interestingly, you guys did not talk about Christopher Lee’s performance in this movie. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t much to talk about, but what I don’t get is why they chose to cast him. Probably just because it’s the “post-Dracula” Monster-Guy but still. It’s Christopher freaking Lee. Weird casting in my opinion.
Watched this a couple of years ago, was disappointed with how flat it left me. It has so many things I like but those flat-shot parlor scenes just draaag. Horror of Dracula made those scenes work the way this one couldn’t.
