What a gas, watching a young cat like you digging this band that I grew up on! Stones were creative as hell and badass for sure. Great reaction, I was smiling and laughing along with you. You killed it!
I'll never forget the time when my older sister came home really late, and really high, and proceeded to shake me awake to listen to some great new song that just came out. She put this album on the turntable and cranked it. Our parents came running out of their bedroom as if the house was on fire. Yes, she got yelled at, and I just went back to bed thinking to myself, what a great song. Go ahead bite the big apple don't mind the maggots' , definitely a cool verse!
I realized it too! He was rapping! First time it ever hit me! Again, your reaction is excellent and I'm freakin thrilled that you enjoyed it so much! Peace!
Just my opinion; Best song on the album. Has a wicked Keith Richards groove that they were never able to replicate in concert. Listen closely to how he moves it around- a unicorn, caught on tape.
It's Ronnie playing the groove. Keith's primary (and signature) contribution to the song is the wicked solo in the middle of the song. Read the liner notes for confirmation.
@@Mr62Lincoln Sorry that’s Keith. Not sure what liner notes you read- respectfully.., either they are wrong (this does happen) or you misinterpreted them. The only ‘possible reference’ I see is that “Ron Wood ‘laid down’ the basic riff” which is entirely possible considering its basic simplicity (E-B-A-B). “Laid Down” is a loose term that can be interpreted many ways, for example sitting down in the studio and playing an E-B-A-B riff- the rest of the guys say “hey what was that? Sounds good, let’s try that...” I WAS NOT THERE, so I don’t know how it materialized. One thing I do know for certain...: That’s Keith Richards playing the rhythm guitar on the studio recording of Shattered. That’s based on endless interviews done by Keith himself talking about the song and specifically the phaser effect pedal that he used to record it. Plus 40+ years of listening to and researching The Stones, plus knowing there’s no way on this earth that Ron Wood could or has EVER played a rhythm track with anything near that sort of a natural ‘groove’, ‘feel’, ‘touch’.., whatever. Ron Wood is a ‘copier’.., he has no ‘style’ of his own. His playing is at best abrasive and rushed sounding. Even his slide playing has a ‘brittle’ sound. There is no subtlety, swing, groove, inventiveness or ‘feel’ in his bag of tricks. Zero sense of dynamics or emotion, as if he had hammers for fingers. The main riff in “Shattered” is dripping, overflowing with ‘dynamics’. That alone tells me without doubt that it’s Keith Richards. My ears tell me it’s Keith. AND yes that’s Keith doing the solo as well- my ears tell me that. Not sure what you read..., but ya can’t believe everything you read- mistakes can be made. Sometimes ya gotta believe you’re ears. Respectfully sir..., that’s Keith. That’s a hill I’m willing to die on. Peace.
A "Schmatta" is a Yiddish word for rags, in NYC there has always been a large Jewish pop and mid 20th century most came from Easter Europe, Russia, etc. Yiddish is part of NY lingo ever since.
Love that you got such a kick out of these lyrics, Biz! 😆😆😆 In college, my girlfriend (wife-to-be) lived in a coed dorm and the guys in the room above her would SKATEBOARD IN THEIR ROOM while playing this full blast!
Keith Richards in response to a reporter's question: What are you trying to say with this song? Keith: Nothing man, that's just our answer to punk ! That was really a funny interview and Keith sat bored in the chair with a cigarette and a drink. @BizMatic -> thanks for introducing the whole album, well done! Greets @all from hamburg (germany)
This is a very fun song. I feel like it looks forward to the kind of music that would come to dominate the early 80s. This album is quite eclectic, and this song adds to that flavor. Fun reactions all around, Biz!
They knew stuff that ppl that lived here didn't know. For example 🎼I was across 53rd st & they spit in my face. 53rd was a hustlers paradise for young men
Hey Biz, listen I gotta say I really appreciate this channel and how much you really love all music. I‘ve totally revisited songs and bands that I haven’t listened to in a long time. Love it! Thank you!
Shadoobie! I wanna say that "Shattered" inspired early hip-hop, but I don't know if that's true. The timing lines up. I'm sure this album got a lot of play in NYC back when. I pointed out how New York was a theme of this album in an earlier post. It's so clear on this one. "Go ahead, bite the Big Apple, don't mind the maggots, uh-huh (Shadoobie)!" NYC was quite a different city back then, especially so soon after the Son of Sam and all that. Times Square was especially seedy. Today it's "Disneyfied", back then it was more like taking a walk on the wild side...
Even though I was a Stones fan starting in the late 60’s (my first albums of theirs were mono- not even on stereo 😂)- this is one of my favorite albums.
This one captures NYC specifically during the 1970s and into the early 80s. "People dressed in plastic bags" was emblematic of the rise of homelessness at that time. It was something akin to a new kinda weirdness that added to the decadence.
Maybe the nastiest groove the Stones ever did. Totally perfect snapshot of late 70s decaying NYC. Amazing how the Stones were able to produce such brilliant funk at the same time that punk was exploding just across the street.
This always brings a smile to my face. I remember my brothers wife laughing at me as a little kid running around bobbing my head going “Shadooby, Shadooby. “ They thought I was baked at 9 years old. They played this at the park one 4th of July and me and my wife danced on the picnic table singing it. Loved your reaction. It’s a weird song but it’s groovy as hell
The New York traffic cops would were these clear plastic coveralls on rainy days. I think that's what he's talking about. "People dressed in plastic bags. Directing traffic."
Yes indeed & thank you 4 that, it baffles me that ppl speak about certain things about NY back then & I can tell they never left their neighborhood lots of ppl were afraid to go to a lot of places cause it was dangerous but you hit it on the nail👏👏👏& this is why I am not going to say anything anymore bc Mick Jagger wrote about it I lived it & I am still here with the grace of God,still surviving on the streets look at me,thank you again
Some of the most popular songs from this album are not songs I ever cared for. But this one... as someone else commented this song captured the feeling and energy of NY at that time. It was a great, great time to be a young man in NYC.
One of my favorites by the Stones. Supposedly it was directed at Lou Reed (especially the line about the prime rate going up), the embodiment of NYC sleaze. NYC was once a great city, like you say INTENSE. Now it's a cesspit. Don't move there man, before a week is out you'll be singing love songs about Georgia
I LOVE THIS SONG!!. Thank you. Sounds kinda crazy, but as a child, this song made me want to visit and experience New York. Never spent any real time discovering NY. I was only there briefly in 1988. Just for a different world perspective from living in Canada my entire life. Described like a whole different culture, growing up.
You got the hand claps Immediately!!😂 I play and sing this by myself on acoustic guitar and people freak out cause it still rocks!! This album had Miss you and Beast of Burden. Great all around!! Pile it high....on a platter!!😉
When you asked for people's favourites from the album I couldn't believe I forgot this one! Best track on the album. Except for possibly "Far Away Eyes".
People dressed in plastic bags directing traffic is referring to the fact that New York was the first city to make their traffic offers where orange vest so it was unusual for Mick Jagger to see I remember I was there 3:44
This song is genius! They guitar sound is something I don't think they've ever used before, it has a Wa-Wa sound effect that makes it unique. It gets your attention right off the bat. And yes that is Ronnie on bass. Sometimes they just couldn't wait around for Billy to get to the recording studio. They used the wa-wa effect again on the song "Driving Too Fast" from the album A Bigger Bang in the early 2000's, you can hear it, it's so freakin' cool. The Greatest Rock N' Roll band of all time. This was the first Stones album I ever bought. I heard Miss You and I Loved it, but when I heard Shattered, that was it, I went and bought the album 3 times. One to play (all original album coves before the lawsuit) one still in the cellophane, black vinyl, and one I opened bc it was a colored vinyl and I wanted to see what color it was, Orange, bad mistake, I was 15. I also have the long version of Miss You colored vinyl Pink never opened, still in the cellophane. I've been hooked ever since. Saw them in '81 Tattoo You Tour at Rich Stadium Buffalo and took my 3 kids to RJS in Tampa 40 years later in 2021.
I love NY too. But back in the late 70's (when this song came out) New York was quite awful. It's changed a lot for the better! thanks for the reaction! Love the Stones
Love that YOU GET THE STONES!!! If you wanna hear Jagger rap, listen to "Hang On to Your Hat" from Steel Wheels...GREAT!!!...p.s. don't worry about Keith's vocals, they kinda grow on you, just keep in mind, at his best, he didn't sing, he wailed like a hillbilly on coke.

People wearing plastic bags, directing traffic are crazy bums wearing garbage bags and in the middle of the street directing the cars. Schmatta is Yiddish for "rags", referring here to the garment industry, based in New York City around "7th Avenue" : "I cant give it away on 7th Avenue". From around 18th Street to 40th Street around 7th Av. is called the "Garment District". ok this band is called HERE COME THE MUMMYS. YOU WILL GO NUTS so I can't wait to see you listen to that plus they do look like MUMMYS check them out live. You will say WTF
i think that smatta is some kinda baked bread or some shit that he can't even give it away on 7th ave, lol, i remember in late 70's when some girls came out and have always loved this song.
Yeah, this one is raw and really captures the state of NYC in the late 1970s. "Some Girls" is a terrific album.
Or as some people believe ,when it was cool!
The whole album does
NYC in 2024 ??
When you said "this describes New York perfectly," you hadn't even gotten to the part about "Rats on the West Side, bedbugs uptown!"' LOL
As a native NYer, I freaking love this song. It's SO evocative of the late 70s-1981ish times.
What a gas, watching a young cat like you digging this band that I grew up on! Stones were creative as hell and badass for sure. Great reaction, I was smiling and laughing along with you. You killed it!
🎸💯 "Shattered" is a real banger‼🔥
🤯 The Rolling Stones are STILL badass‼☮ ❤ 🎶

This song captures the flavor of the Studio 54 era in New York.. really carries the vibe of that time, everybody looking for that 15 minutes of fame.
What a way to go out! I agree. One of the best songs on the album. Thanks for a great reaction!
Mick was part of the New York elite. It is a great song!
Great song about the glorious mess New York was in the 70s. And he even slips in Yiddish “ Shmatta, Shmatta, Shmatta… “ 🎶❤️😈🎶
Yep!
Shadoobie! Finally. Love the whole album, but been waiting for this one. One of the best grooves ever.
Thanks for your all reactions.
I realized it too! He was rapping! First time it ever hit me! Again, your reaction is excellent and I'm freakin thrilled that you enjoyed it so much! Peace!
Of course Patti Smith was doing rap like vocals a bit before this and oh so well!

Jagger is THE Guy when it comes to performance and accentuating the lead vocals he has been amazing for almost 60years.😊

Just my opinion; Best song on the album. Has a wicked Keith Richards groove that they were never able to replicate in concert. Listen closely to how he moves it around- a unicorn, caught on tape.
Word. Thus is a quintessential Keith Richards groove. This remains my favorite on the album.

Schmatta is actually a Yiddish word for rags, as in tatters, mentioned elsewhere in the song… And 7th ave is the garment district
Love it!
