"Shattered" is UK slang for being extremely tired. The song is basically about the wild, crazy life of New York City in the 70s. Just being there made them feel tired all over.
Yeah New York was definitely in tatters in the 70's!! The city was in debt up to it's ears crime ran rampit and there was garbage piling up all over the streets cause the city didn't have the money to pay the police departments and the sanitation crews. It was a wicked mess for sure!!
Wow...thanks Mark! First time hearing that regarding the slang...and I was in Middle School when "Some Girls" was released. Better later then never for the knowledge😁
Yes indeed. I have always loved Led Zeppelin and the Stones. My singing voice is more like Robert Plant than anyone else, and I took my drumming style directly from John Bonham. Only when I veered into playing live with a band that had a more Stones feel did I realize that their style of simple is a bitch to emulate well. Bonham and Watts were certainly kings of groove and feel!
People like to rag on the Stones, but, they were not afraid to be weird at times and that is what makes them great. This is actually a different type of release for them and the first single was MISS YOU, which is great too.
@@NuCkInFuTs1 It was good if you were a Rolling Stone and all the others whose legacies were established and had the ability to go anywhere else at anytime. But NYC was wide open on the wild side, AIDS was unknown and SEX and SEX and SEX and SEX.
Rolling Stones with a little disco, punk rock tune into their music as the late '70s were just entering into the '80s. Great song! These kids dig the music! jaja Fun and silly.
When I was a kid my buddies and I were rocking to this song and one of my crazy buds started dancing drunk and fell into my parents glass coffee table and completely SHATTERED it!
The Rolling Stones dropped their Some Girls album in 1978 and it quickly zoomed to number one in the charts worldwide. "Shattered", "Beast of Burden", "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" -- yes they covered The Temptations classic -- and "Miss You" -- another ode to New York City. When you check out "Miss You" -- I say when because that's one you must check out -- be sure to listen to the full length album version -- with the saxophone solo -- instead of the truncated shorter version. The album version is four minutes forty eight seconds long, so you'll know you've got the right version if it clocks in at that duration.
From their highly successful "Some Girls" record (1978). They even have a country tune on that record called "Far Away Eyes" that is a hoot. I love the Rolling Stones. If you like hard gritty blues check out their "Black and Blue" record, in particular "Hey Negrita". Great reaction, TY.
The video of Hey Negrita is tops! They may have been tanked up on substances when they made that video performance. Mick Jagger and Billy Preston are quite the combo.
The Stones play in a number of styles. I love their country side. Sweet Virginia, Far Away Eyes, Dead Flowers. And for guitar songs, try Can” t You Hear me Knocking or Time Waits for No One, (Mick Taylor - peak stones era) no offense to Brian or Ronnie.
It’s very hard to track down, but the Faces did a live version of “I’d Rather Go Blind” that appears in the Five Guys Walk into a Bar… box set where Ronnie plays a solo that knocked me off my feet. Look for it if you can!
I've never seen Brad so animated! Love the Stones and this song always reminds me of my college days dancing in the discos in Italy in early 1979! It's just fun!
A rocking recording of crazy live and times in NYC 🗽 funky, dark, gritty, urban, unfiltered, the rolling, bluesy, disco tinged . I love it. Great album listen.
Now this is late Stones from 1978. I always felt that this was Mick Jagger's take on punk music. I know y'all have reacted to most of the Stones' classic songs from the 60s and early 70s. But their best late songs need a listen: "Miss You" and "Start Me Up" are the two you've got to check out.
I'M FROM THE 70's! lol. I was a Freshman in high school when this album came out. I still have it, and was just playing it for my Grandkids! My love and knowledge of classic rock is my gift to them. You guys are my favorite reactors!
It's an ode to the glorious grimy, crime-ridden late 70s New York. Nothing “goofy” about it. Some Girls embodies the disco sleaze and gritty punk of NYC’s music scene, from Studio 54 to CBGB. You would love the album, which was viewed as a “comeback” record for the Stones.
It was crime ridden because the city was in debt up to their ears and they couldn't afford to pay the police departments and there was garbage littered all over the streets because they also couldn't afford to pay the sanitation crews!! Lol
"Shattered" is a great track by the Stones, but it's compressed, frenetic sound is clearly reflective of their cocaine use during that period. Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman set the groove for the rest of the guys.
This album came out when I was 12 years old and, overnight, I went from bubblegum-pop to listening to real rock and roll. It really did change my life. I actually have a Stones tongue tattooed on my arm. Stray Cat Blues is probably their best song, ever IMHO. Keep up the great work. You guys know how to pick 'em.
The secret to the Stones longevity is their ability to adapt...to change with the times and somehow still remain valid. Their musical catalog is immense...filled with dozens of number one hits. 🙂
Start Me up, Miss You, Respectable, Don't Stop, This will be the last time, Street fighting man, Jumping jack flash, 19th Nervous breakdown, Under my thumb, Not fade away, Fool to cry, She's a rainbow, Get off of my cloud, Ruby Tuesday, Paint it black, Undercover of the night, Emotional rescue, Honky Tonk Women, It's all over now, Let's spend the night together.... Just some really good rolling stones tracks
"Schmatte" is a Yiddish word for "rags". In modern times, it refers to the New York garment district. The importance of the place was put front and center in reality shows like Project Runway, RuPaul's Drag Race, and America's Top Model.
As someone who grew up in the NYC at this time in the late 70's they're singing about, this is soooo accurate. NYC was dirty abandoned, decadent and insane at the time. They got it all right. The parents left the city. So fun.
Man, when the Stones were "on" they could make anything likeable. This is not even really a song, but it's infectious. That guitar sound is what puts it over the top -- it was so original at the time.
