I love watching your simple tutorials as I sit and knit. Can I suggest when casting off the garter St edge cast off on the wrong side it looks so much nicer on the right side. I've been knitting for 67 years and have picked up a few tricks along the way. Keep them coming ❤
I like casting off with right side facing because I actually prefer the little ridge you get from the cast off more than a raw row of garter stitches from casting off on the wrong side. We all have our own preferences and that’s what makes crafting so wonderful
I do mine log cabin style … do one edge at a time, turn and do the next edge, all around. Less needles that way and in a dark color you don’t miss the mitred corners. In a lighter color like this it might not look as beautiful though. Nice video … thanks!
Yep that’s another option, but my eyes just don’t love log cabin on a border! It’s all personal preference though, so many different ways to do things 🙂
Absolutely perfect and beautiful. I’m planning to use one of your other garter stitch tutorials to make a blanket and this may just add some interest to the final blanket. Thank you so much for all that you do. ❤
Thank you for this video. I am just finishing a hue shift afghan after many years in time out, and knitpicks did not explain the border part at all. Thank You, Thank You!
I learned a new skill today !!! I had to use a crochet needle for the initial connection row, but I did it and the right amount of stiches too !!!!! :)
@@SnufflebeanYarn I finished !!! It's not perfect, and I made a lot of mistakes, but the boarder is on and sewed together. I'm quite happy with the outcome. Thank you !!! Your tutorial was so easy to follow and uncomplicated. I will be doing this again ... ☺
Thank you for this fantastic tutorial! I have a moss stitch blanket, but I might do a small test square and see about picking up those stitches and adding a garter stitch border like this. Otherwise I'll use this for a future project.
Well, did you add the garter stitch? I am watching this video because I am making a moss stitch patch work blanket and I want to know if this will look good on it
Intend to put this on my garter st squares blanket. The one each square is knitted onto the previous and new sewing up. Have been looking for ages for a border. Its king bed size so going to be a lot of stitches.
Gracias por su tutorial, es muy sencillo seguir su explicación visual y con los subtitulos es mas clara la explicación, definitivamente me servirá para hacer mis tapetes
Love your work and this video. Is it possible to make this work, if I want the side edges wider than the top and bottom edges? If so, what would I need to change? Thank you so much!! 😊
Thank you so very much! I can relate to your intro since I really only crochet, but a tiny person asked for a fav blankie replacement. It will be stockinette stitch so any tips on adding your lovely border?
It’ll work in the same way as I knitted it but as you’re working in stockinette it should be easier to pick up stitches - maybe slip the last stitch purlwise with the yarn in front to give you a nice play to pick up a stitch as you’ll only be picking one up per two rows?
This is perfect. I'm knitting "A Stitch in Time" blanket and I wasn't loving the way she does the boarder. I also may try and put the stitches on hold instead of binding off and then do a 3 needle bind off to join all my squares together. The ridge it will create might add a little extra interest. Do you think what I want to try will work?
@SnufflebeanYarn oh okay! So instead of it being a one to one and pick up every stich along the border, I'd instead pick up maybe every other stich or so depending how thick it is?
@SnufflebeanYarn awesome thabk you so much💜 your tutorial was so easy to keep track of. I'm just starting to get back into knitting after a few years and I'm looking for good tutorials for my first project. I think I found some for sure😁
I want to add this great border to my "Sliding is Fun" diagonal garter stitch blanket. I am not sure what stitches to pick up. Can you offer any guidance on this? Thank you!
With garter stitch I pick up in between garter ridges on the long edges and every stitch on the short edges - for stockinette edges you may need to do every other stitch. I use the same size needles for the edge that I’ve used for the main body.
I’m trying to add this border - can’t seem to get how to do knit front back - but my problem is - the one side of the knitting is at a diagonal but the other side has come out fairly straight - where have I gone wrong?
Hi - How do you do a very large blanket? Eg 7 squares by 9 squares (each square measuring approx 6 inches)? Do you do this blanket edge by blanket edge, doing one square at a time on on each edge, then sew the seams of the border for each square together (only mitring at the blanket corner)? There would be no needles long enough to do the whole blanket edge in one go! Unless I'm missing something obvious?
You can buy cable connectors to make very long cable needs if you want to - it would be a mammouth task but possible! I’m a baby blanket addict myself so I haven’t ever knitted anything that large but I think if I did I would go down the cable connector route to get a seamless finish
If the blanket is knitted in bulky then yes it works in the same way, if the blanket is knitted in thinner yarn then you may need to pick up less stitches to accommodate the thicker yarn.
Question - could you use a provisional cast on and/or not cast off the main blanket rather than picking up stitches on the finished piece, for the top and bottom?
@@SnufflebeanYarn I understand. I just wanted to double check. I assume the same thing could be true with picking up/knitting through the stitches of the short edge rows as you're knitting the long edges too, if you're careful enough... I hate sewing with a passion so if I could create the same result without it, that'd be amazing. Thank you so much for sharing the technique. I love the mitred edge and it's definitely nicer than just crocheting a border or the blocky joins. 🥰
Potentially, except the direction would be different with the long edges. I’m not a sewing fan but the 4 small edges in this border only take 5 mins to sew so it’s a comprimise I was willing to accept 🥰
@@SnufflebeanYarn Absolutely. It's something I'll try out on a sample and see how it looks because that's the important part. Otherwise, as you say, I'll just have to suck it up for the gorgeous end result. 😂
@@SnufflebeanYarn I just realised that I think my explanation was a bit confusing here. Just to clarify: I didn't mean to pick up just a few stitches along the mitred edge of the previously completed cast-on/cast-off border, and then do lots of rows of garter... rather, I meant to do exactly what you did, but with the extra step of picking up an extra stitch through the edge of the mitre at the start and end of each of the long rows. I don't know if that's just making it more confusing. 😂But either way, I'll give it a try. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. 🤗
Thank you, very clear. I agree, garter is much underrated and makes beautiful blankets.

@@SnufflebeanYarn Seems to me a stockinette border would curl? Maybe a seed stitch would work better? How did it go?
The stockinette I was referring to would be the body of the blanket - unless I understood the comment wrong. 🙂

I say if you think it’ll work then go for it, you can probably visualise it better than me as you’re the one knitting the project 😀
Outstanding. Thank you.
Awesome tutorial! Could you use this same technique if you wanted to make the border with a thicker yarn of a different material?
Yes but the amount of stitches you’d need to pick up would be less if it’s a thicker yarn

Just pick them up evenly across the edges ☺️
How to make this kind of border in triangle? And trapesium?
Nice work!
Hi are you picking up every Stitch or every other? also what size needles are you using please? ... Thank you, Brenda x

I so wish I had found this video earlier. I am knitting a baby blanket using a waffle pattern.
Would it be possible to do this knitting on a circular needle, I wonder?
You could try? I just found this the simplest way of adding a border 😀
I’m trying to add this border - can’t seem to get how to do knit front back - but my problem is - the one side of the knitting is at a diagonal but the other side has come out fairly straight - where have I gone wrong?
Getting the kfb correct is key to getting the diagonal corners so my guess is you haven’t increased correctly on the straight side.

@@SnufflebeanYarn Ah thank you so much for that!
Would this also work for a moss stitch border?
You could give it a go but I’ve only used garter stitch myself
Hi, can this be done with rib stitch?
I haven’t personally tried it so I couldn’t say one way or another.
How do I know which one is the right side, both sides look same. I am beginner.
If both sides look the same just pick one side to be the right side
Would this work with bulky yarn too?
If the blanket is knitted in bulky then yes it works in the same way, if the blanket is knitted in thinner yarn then you may need to pick up less stitches to accommodate the thicker yarn.
How would this be done with a stockinette stitch?
I’m not sure how well it would work, the stockinette might not give the structure needed for a nice border
How do you do a large blanket? There’s too many stitches to do the top and sides on one needle.
I would use cable connectors to make a really long set of circular needles 🙂
I just finished a large blanket and was wondering the same thing
Can you tell me the yarn you are using please.
I’m using Hayfield Bonus DK
Great video thank you ☕️🧶😊
Question - could you use a provisional cast on and/or not cast off the main blanket rather than picking up stitches on the finished piece, for the top and bottom?
You could if you wanted to, but I wanted this tutorial to be as beginner friendly as possible.

Why is my garter stitch border so tight? Should I pick up fewer stitches?
If it’s tight you’ve likely not picked up enough stitches.
Interesting! I was picking up 3, skipping one, etc. I thought I was picking up too many!
Molto interessante! Peccato 😢 che non sia in italiano
