Ayy, occasional MMX1 speedrunner here. Love to see people appreciating older games. Couple of tips for ya: 1) Strongly recommend rebinding your controls. You'll have to move one of the weapon hotswap buttons somewhere else, but using L or R as your dash button makes this game so much more comfortable. My mom whooped serious ass on the SNES, and showed me this when I was seven; dashing being so easily accessible with jumping and shooting is a complete game changer, and it saves a lot of hand grunch. 2) Also strongly recommend exploring alternate boss orders. Tornado and flamethrower deal damage pretty much every single frame and can be a great substitute for heavy mashing against certain enemies and a few mini-bosses (most notably the big slime guy in Mandrill's stage and the terrain crunchers in Armadillo). Doing Eagle and Mammoth with the buster early on can save you TONS of hand/arm grunch too. Old games can be rough sometimes. Wrist/hand ergonomics weren't always a consideration in game design or control schemes. You might have to get a little creative to avoid putting stress on your body. Even hardware mods like turbo controllers can help; it's not "cheating" in a 1-player game played for fun, it's an accessibility option. Take it easy, Al. Would love to see more SNES games around here. Zombies Ate My Neighbors is also a top 5 game for me, if the jank doesn't drive you completely insane.
To add onto this: You can get every upgrade in Eagle's stage once you have the Dash (from Penguin's stage), get every upgrade in Mammoth's stage if Penguin's stage is done and you have the Helmet Armor (from Eagle's stage), and get the last upgrade in Penguin's stage if you have Mammoth's weapon. So going Penguin, Eagle, Mammoth (then backtracking for that one upgrade in Penguin's stage) lets you make X way stronger almost immediately and super-easily. That won't help you speedrun the game (since it involves 100%ing stages and backtracking), but for a casual player, getting that many upgrades as early as possible is a GODSEND. Plus your next boss should be Mandrill - and his stage is substantially easier if you beat Eagle first - both because you have the Tornado (which trivializes not only his miniboss but every enemy in his stage), but simply beating Eagle at all permanently turns off the electrified floor hazards in Mandrill's stage. And yeah, seriously, the Tornado and the Fire are basically broken. Use them at every opportunity. Forget about the buster. Even the Ice is better than the buster in every way. Use the Tornado until it runs out of ammo, then use the Fire until that runs out, then use the Ice (and honestly, you should never get to that point anyway). Only bother with the other weapons for boss weaknesses or specific applications (ie: some upgrades can only be got with the Boomerang, and the charged Rolling Shield are Chameleon Sting are defensive buffs that basically let you ignore all the hazards in certain parts of certain stages). X1 is a fine game, but the weapons aren't balanced, and you can exploit the hell out of that if you know what you're doing.
Re-mapping Dash to 'R' was a game-changer for me once I discovered it. And I didn't even think I thought about that until X4 because I was tired of getting finger cramps trying to do everything you could as Zero on just the standard four face buttons.
This game is the closest I'll ever get to being a speed runner. I played this game sooo many times, that I can still remember when the enemies pop up in each level or when they use their attacks and how to dodge them. Every secret armor or health boost hidden away in every pocket of the levels. I loved this and Megaman X4 the most out of the whole series. Thanks for the nostalgia.
I personally ADORE the Mega Man series, with my personal favorite in the X series being X2. I also always 100% X1 and never beat it without the beeg doken Edit: My oldest brother never gets the hadoken, so I'm better than him lul :3
Mega Man X's physics are ingrained into my brain from how much I've played X1/X4. Your struggle at 11:04 is something I dread possibly happening to me, since I'm an insanely good button masher, thanks to the mega man X games funnily enough.
He actually didn't have it, you can see him reseting with password right after and no password carries over the Hadoken so he would have to get it again
This was very entertaining. Congratulations on getting the Funny Little Hadouken, even if you didn't use it. I'm also 28 and have been playing this game for as long as I can remember, but I don't remember the last time I've seen Spark Mandrill's stage with the power on.
I think this would be a neat series, fully completing your favorite games or just the Mega Man series in general. It was neat watching all the way through.
This was fun. Next time you play, don't forget that Sting Chameleon's charge abilty gives you a few seconds if invincible i tangibility you can use to sneak past those mace weilders
First off, X2 is better. Second, you can and should (at least to some extent), ignore the weakness order. Chill Penguin should absolutely be your first target, but after him, I'd actually recommend Storm Eagle, and then Flame Mammoth. Storm Eagle is TRIVIAL as long as you have the dash, with or without his actual weakness, his weapon is THE BEST IN THE GAME (seriously, it's downright broken), and you can get all of the collectibles in his stage with nothing but the dash. PLUS one of the collectibles in his stage (the head upgrade) is necessary to get two of the collectibles in Mammoth's stage (and Mammoth's weapon is in some ways better than Eagle's, plus he is equally trivial to defeat with or without his weakness - though you will have his weakness this way). And once you have Mammoth's weapon, you can get the last collectible from Penguin's level. As you can imagine, starting off the game with that many upgrades and both broken weapons makes the whole playthrough a lot smoother. After you've taken out those three though, you should probably follow weakness order for the remaining bosses. In fact, as a general rule, forget about using the buster once you have the ice (unless you run out of ammo at least). It's better in literally every way, and then the tornado and the fire are so great that they make it obsolete. Use special weapons in stages, not just against bosses.
It's funny how a speedrun of this game is shorter than the video. I'm not saying that it's a skill issue, but it's definitely interesting to think about how different a casual run is versus a speedrun.
I was born 1991. I remember when my oldest brother got an emulator on his desktop in the early 2000s. This, and Link to the Past, had graphics i thought were so good it would be a while before i found out they were from the 90s.

for that Spark Mandrill E-Tank, the trick with the boomerang from what i remember is to either shoot while dashing to make it reach farther, or shoot as you fall to make it reach down
MMX is a Masterpiece "perfect" game and you can do all sorts of "no weapon" or "no charging" stuff, or you can struggle your way through the game and it's still fun! ...except for the Spider Boss. That thing is always self mutilation torture.
even after so many replays... that one darn pit in chill penguin, the right one right after getting the boots always eats up at least one life... also, i recommend doing sting chameleon's stage second if you ever replay, the armor and chameleon sting are incredibly useful for the stuff in the harder stages

So fun fact, to save some button mashing, trying dashing and shooting at the same time, dash shots basically do double damage so this can kill enemies allot faster, also works on bosses. Also for the love of god kill Mammoth or Eagle early on for their weapons lol, makes the whole allot easier, Both are already pretty easy without their weakness
As an avid retro gamer, a frequent Megaman X revisitor, and someone who remembers being way better at games as a kid... you have my sympathy. I still die to Chill Penguin too.
It’s much more fun to go out of order in X1, because roughly over half the bosses CAN be beaten with your primary weapon. When you don’t cheese him out with his weakness, Spark Mandrill is a really exciting boss fight (Except Sting Chameleon and Boomer Kwanger I still can’t fight them well for the life of me.)
