Never mind the Autobahn. I drove this car from NY city to Buffalo in 1980 on back roads all the way. I cruised at around 100mph over bumpy, rough and sometimes curvy roads. The SM just ate up and spit out the road making for for the most enjoyable ride imaginable. Absolutely fantastic space machine!
I heard the engine was said to produce 170hp but many were tested to a little less than 140hp. But what made the car speedy was its "slipperyness", very aerodynamic.
Yes, and torque too I'd imagine. We once had a Fiat 130 with its 3.2 V6 that only had 165bhp but it was a delight to drive with a deliciously smooth and progressive power delivery.
Maybe it was a 'smog' version for north America? 170hp for a 2.7L was pretty much normal for Euro cars of tgat era. A BMW 2800CS e3 from the late 1960's had exactly that, 170hp. Mercedes 280se very similar.
@@2512MaTHias unfortunately my SM has a severely rusted chassis. I do have a good drive train though. I'm picking up a solid SM shell for $800usd next month, and swapping my drivetrain into it. I should have a very nice and functional SM by the end of the summer

@@2512MaTHias I once got up to 140 kph in my 1975 CX2000, before the head gasket finaly gave way. It felt like the car could have handled much higher speeds.
@@trespire Yes, that’s true. The Citroens then had really good chassis which were capable of securely going high speed. That’s the case for the SM, the CX and the XM. The following C5 was no more so precisely to handle.
@@2512MaTHias Yes simple aerodynamic designs seem to be in the minority now and brash in your face ugliness is taking over. Ironic really when the cost of fuel is what it currently is. I had two C 5' s the latter a 16 valve diesel which would cruise all day at the speed limit and return good mpg.

Consumption and driving costs were ridiculously low. He gave it away for a handful of bucks and I didn’t take it because no parking space… big mistake ☹️ It was such a cool relaxed car!
Here: about 180 km/h / 110 mph. This SM is capable of more than 220 km/h / 140 mph, but I didn’t dare yet 😮 and you have to find Autobahn with no speed limit and no traffic… not always easy.
@@Stefan_38 In fact you CAN go 400 km/h on the Autobahn if you have a Koenigsegg or Bugatti. But more and more parts get speed limits every month, and you can only do it on very straight parts, with no cars and trucks on the street. Sunday morning 4 am …

@@billybill6604 Thank you so much 😊 My CX 20 Safari has the Aluminum Renault engine, 100 or so hp, not the quickest one, but really smooth ride. The SM with a regular 2,7 V6 and 165 hp surely does around 220 kph. My SM doesn’t have a regular SM engine… 😁😁😁
Yes, but only with a freshly tightened steering mechanism. The get loose every 5000 km, and then you can turn the steering wheel 8 cm left-right- left doing NOTHING to the wheels. I had a w123 280E and know what I’m talking about. Really wouldn’t want to drive it this way 200 km/h on the autobahn. The DIRAVI steering of the SM constantly presses 172 bars (2500 psi) from both sides into the steering resulting in ZERO play, giving the ultra exact steering feeling and security.

, the suspension, the interior and the fabulous seats plus it looks like something made in 2070
With modern fuel they run too lean and hot you need to give it a carb or EFI re-Adjustement and than they will crank out around 180HP

V6 sounds coarse, I like it, it's not what you'd expect on such a stylish car and I like that 2 face type.
In my opinion, it is not the best music of a V6, chiefly if I remind a V6 Alfa Romeo "Busso", though both engines are engineered and built in Italy
