    1. We in Germany have well mantained cars (no junks, good tyres, etc)
    2. People actually check their mirrors and use the signal lights
    3. Nobody sleeps on the 3rd lane (like I experienced în US)....you pas somebody, then back on 2 lane...
So there is no point on having a speed limit, for every inch on the autobahn.....BUT....we need to forget using the phones while driving....speed doesnt kill, lack of attention does it !!!

Being from Denmark, I've noticed German drivers are particularly courteous. We see many German tourists here, and they consistently use turn signals and let you in when you signal a lane change. Their overall driving mentality is something many drivers around the world could learn from.

Nos lugares onde a velocidade é realmente livre, que, cuidado, não são muitos, TODOS vão estar muito mais rápido que você e você vai estar na direita nervosa. My impression driving on autobahn, and in various german citys was that they drive soo fast. Before I went to Germany, I heard they had very strict speed limits.. like 3km/h extra on a road could get you a ticket. But I saw people speeding everywhere.. It was a bit surreal driving in a big city, and a big truck drives so fast you where afraid that they would hit some of the people walking next to it. Everyone drove very fast in Germany.. and I also saw some accidents.. big smashes in the city, probably thanks to how fast you can drive.. Most citys I visit in other countries have like a 40km/h speed limit. In Germany, it felt like everyone drove 80kmh in those zones lol. The roads where very bad also, they are not flat.. so the car constantly vibrates.. I used to complain about roads in Sweden, but Germany are like 10x worse. Felt so good coming home again, and suddenly road noise in the car was halfed :)

I have driven on the Autobahn many times over the last 40 years and loved every minute of it. I have always been amazed at the general courtesy displayed by the other drivers and it is so refreshing to share the Autobahn with like minded drivers. The sections of "no speed limit" are well chosen with good visibility and straight road with no high gradient or curves. The Autobahn is engineered for high speed and when combined with educated drivers is as safe if not safer than any speed controlled highway. It sets the example of what can be achieved if the people who use the roads are responsible, courteous and properly trained to use such a road system. Unfortunately not all countries see driver education as relevant or even necessary once they have passed their initial driving test. The lunatics I encounter on a daily basis here on West Australian roads would not last five minutes on the Autobahn without causing death and destruction and yet the authorities here continue to concentrate solely on speed reduction as a means of reducing the road toll. The Autobahn proves that speed does NOT kill unless it is combined with another ingredient such as alcohol, drugs, stupidity, complacency, ignorance or arrogance, all of which can be addressed by proper legislation and education. Long may the Autobahn remain speed limit free as it is today.

I haven't yet driven the Autobahn, but I have driven in the Japan expressways, and I was also very happy driving there with how they respected lane discipline. " The sections of "no speed limit" are well chosen with good visibility and straight road with no high gradient or curves. "
      Not necessarily.
Take e.g. the A61, direction Köln, from Nettetal to Köln.
The asphalt is old, the lanes are a bit narrow ( compared to say the A6, after Landau/Neustadt a/d WeinstraBe, at least) there are curves and a lot of highway exits.
Yet, there is no limit on this track, either.
Besides, it can happen, that there is a left curve ( say, at Königswinter on the A3 - unlimited track, as well), which is not overseeable because of the bushes. If you overtake at 200+, and there is a traffic jam/congestion behind this curve, then you can think of how you can brake the car.

Saying there are not many rules on the U.S. Interstates isn't necessarily true. There are drive-right, pass-left laws on the books in almost all the states, and they are starting to be more rigorously enforced, especially in the Western states with the 75-80 mph speed limits. For example, camping in the left lane in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas can earn you a reckless driving or impeding traffic violation with up to a $600.00 fine for a first offense.

Here in California, I call the left lane the narcissist lane. Narcissists enter the freeway and cut straight across to the left lane because they think it's where they get to take it easy. When you come up behind them, do they move over to the right and let you pass? Of course not. They glare at you in the mirror and slow down because it's their job to police speeders. The red on your face and smoke coming out of your ears is proof to them that you're an evil person and they're doing right by keeping you in line. They will match the speed of the person next to them to ensure you can't pass on the right, but if you finally get the opportunity to do so, they will speed up to prevent you getting in front of them and before you know it, you're both doing 100mph, even though their original goal was supposedly keeping the road safe from speeders. When you finally do get in front of them, they slow back down and wait for their next victim. Then, when they are a hundred feet from their exit, they cut back across all lanes at the last minute and just barely make the off-ramp. I have been seriously considering moving to Germany. I'm longing to live among mature people and enjoy driving.

I am from Germany and think indeed that our Autobahns are one of the bests on this planet. However over the last few decades Germany had become one big Baustelle (roadworks) and very, very busy with a lot of traffic jams. Although it is allowed to drive at high speed at some places, one has to be very aware of foreign drivers who are not used to Thijs and make the dombest mistakesbecause they have no clue what is happening when other drives do 200 km +. In my several trips to the USA i found it relaxing that the speed was regulated. The “keep your lane” principel one has to get used to but I think it’s great. So when you come over here, please be fully aware that we indeed sometimes drive very fast but the Autobahn is not a track!

I’m half German and when I did the G1 test in Canada, I failed the first time but I would’ve passed if it wasn’t for one simple question. It was “where can you pass”. Growing up w a German family I was always taught only on the left, even when driving in Canada. Well in Canada, it’s legal to pass on the left or the right, so I failed that time. Now I have a g2, which is pretty much a full license. Driving in North America you need to simply be patient and aware. I just try to be patient as I know Canadian and American drivers are really dumb and don’t have/follow rules nor do they have societal unwritten rules.

Non-German here. I drive on German highways (and other roads) a couple of times a year and it’s not a myth that German motorists are *generally* law-abiding, disciplined people. Driving on limitless chunks of highways is actually not dangerous because of this general self discipline and, provided you also pay constant attention to your driving environment, it goes alright. That said, there are so many local speed limits on the Autobahns that unlimited chunks have effectively become more the exception than the rule. For my part, I’ve never exceeded 180 km/h even on the limitless parts because I just don’t feel comfortable when higher than that, so if would be unreasonable and irresponsible. Driving on an Autobahn, even on chunks that have no limits, is not about speeding for the sake of speeding.

Well, many Bundesautobahn's I've seen in Germany do have large chunks of unlimited speed. Especially, those who are not popular among tourists. Take the A3 as an example, due to many construction works happening too, including on unlimited speed sections, it's difficult to drive 160km/h on a constant basis. Nonetheless, take the A44 towards Berlin and you won't have that problem.

I mean back when it was 55 that was silly, but now plenty of the highway is 70 and some places have 85mph even as the limit. I don’t think I trust the average random person going much faster. I trust myself to, but I am fine with the limit. I have the ability to drive very fast, but there is always the one time a deer will cross or someone will drift in the lane. It is not meant for drivers to stay in as we see daily and you can be fine up to $120 dollars for staying in the left lane something that I highly doubt many Americans know. On the other hand, the right lane can be use to pass if the needs arise.

Love Andre's Citroën CX -- I owned one when I lived in Germany! Fun driving on the Autobahn at elevated speeds *for a few minutes* then stressful -- indeed as others have said, different cars and trucks travelling at various speeds, plus the superfast BLW's and Mercedes's showing up seemingly from nowhere! Switzerland does it better -- speed limit is 130kph -- does anyone really need to go any faster?
Interesting aside, visited Switzerland very often, hanging out with a group of Swiss young adults, I asked if they had ever been to Germany.. Answer: Sure, once -- to see how fast our cars could go!

I don’t like driving in Germany and avoid it if possible. Always got to be aware of speeding missiles in your mirror when overtaking. The trucks are doing 90 km/h and the speed difference with some drivers is way too much. And I don’t know what asphalt they use but it get pretty slippery when raining. And although constantly working on the road it still looks like patchwork. I like the Dutch and Scandinavian highways a lot more. The only remark I have on the Scandinavian highway is the constant changing of the speed limit, it can become very costly if you’re not paying attention.

Best kept secret for unlimited high speed: the three Autobahn "corridors" between what used to be West Berlin and West Germany.
They have been totally rebuilt and for long stretches are mostly empty. Bundesautobahn #2 going to Magdeburg, #9 going south, passing Leipzig and #24 going north towards Wolfsburg (VW) and Hannover.
What makes the Autobahn so different? High quality engineering ...no boop-boop, boop-boop or crazy gaps that would be sending you airborne when passing a bridge or overpass. One seamless ribbon of comfortable high speed driving.

I find the Autobahn relaxing. I don't drive very fast, normally around 130 - certainly not fast in such dense traffic we saw in the video when she was slowing down - and I can use my mirrors rather than look at the speed meter. If the road is empty I might go up to 160-170 but that is rare and more like if I have a ferry to catch.

Next time you are on the freeway drive at the speed limit and stay in the right lane, follow the 3 second rule, in other words don't tailgate or attempt to pass the traffic in front of you.....
If you do this and stay 3 to 6 seconds behind ALL the traffic in front of you then you will REALLY see what is going wrong on the freeway....
It's NOT just a "left lane hog" problem, it's a nearly everyone is tailgaiting and attempting to outrace each other like we are all in a NASCAR race but we don't win any prizes for getting to the front of the pack and getting to our exit first.

If you have the unlimited sign you better be driving in excess of 260 KM/H otherwise you will be tailgated. I'm always looking in the rear view mirror and move over before the faster car gets to me. Most people observe that rule, better than 90%. Lucky my 2013 Shelby GT500 will do better than 340 KM/H (200+ MPH). Good car choice for this Autobahn study! VW is always confident and seamlessly integrated for this type of road and driving.. I have to point out though that a lot of the things about American freeways are false. It’s not legal to pass on any lane, only the left. There are more rules for American roads than Germany in reality, but with the character of the road dynamics you couldn’t tell. Speed limits really are just a suggestion because on stretches like I-10, 95, etc people are traveling long distances and will comfortably travel at 15-20 mph over the limit without issue. Passing can become an issue when drivers don’t move, but it’s gotten better and people seem to have woken up with all the new posted warnings. “Left lane for passing only.” Now, within a metro area the “freeway” is just a connection point for major city throughways. This becomes a “free for all” zone due to high traffic density and merging. When you go to leave this “connection point” the freeway straightens out again and drivers will act more efficiently

So you said that there is a speed limit, then a minute later talk about the debate surrounding implementing a speed limit. Which is it???

The German drivers are very analytical and disciplined people. I have great respect for them. They have the concentration and precision one would see in military aviators. It is for this reason that the US Interstate Highways would not be able to emulate the speed of the Autobahn. Americans drivers, in general, are terrible. Maybe not as bad as seen in Pakistan, but still terrible.

no need for a speed limit cause why if everyone is aware of the gas prices and his cars consumption.
I tend to drive economically and on the pretty low end of the manufacturers consumption but sometimes i drive faster, a lot faster and I used to use all of the horses the 12 cylinder could mobilise. But that happens pretty rarely .
If oyu pay more than 2€ per liter you want to save gas for sure - except you can drive a company car but that is a totally different debate if the companies take car for their driving employees and cross check fuel consumption and asked for habit changes or not.
Get rid off the company cars would safe far more fuel than a speed limit cause those are too cheap to get and people tend to abuse it.
Habits of company car drivers are totally different than those of private owners - of cause usually and not always.

I did the math, and economically, the time saved is worth more than the additional gas cost when driving fast, even with high fuel cost. Ofc this varies by car, so you'd have to do your own math.

I have done lots of high speed driving (140mph+) in Nevada and Montana, no need to go to Germany. German Autobahn, not a big deal.
