- How does this bizarre Citroen with a Maserati engine look, sound and feel like today
This the bizarre Citroen SM, a car with a Maserati engine under the bonnet, made in the times when French engineers and designers were crazy and admirable at the same time. It has a mind-blowing engineering even by today’s standards!
Today we are going to discover the intriguing story and engineering of Citroen SM and explore this car, which I found in Switzerland, at Oldtimer Gallerie Toffen.
Special thanks to Oldtimer Galerie Toffen for providing us the car! ► / oldtimergalerietoffen

ABOUT Timeless Driving
Timeless Driving is dedicated to timeless passion for driving and timeless cars. And it’s not only about the age of a car, but rather about the passion put in it. We love cars that have a timeless ingredient in them. It can be a proper historic model, manufactured 40 or 90 years ago, but it can also be a recent, 15-year old model that is already treated with admiration. Or it can even be a present-day car that breaths passion and timeless potential in every bit. As we say it - Timeless. Not necessarily old. Aware of great care classic cars deserve and aware of collecting value, but not necessarily elitist. Cars, motorcycle, trucks, motorsport, engineering, unknown stories from past that are admirable today - all of them can be subjects here!
Such a beautiful car, otherworldly in its looks, unlike todays cars.
Would love to own one!
I had the rare honour for my 21st birthday present in 1974 here to drive the new fuel injected Right Hand Drive SM owned by a neighbour who lived up the street, here in Sydney,
I had a GS... as did my dad.
It was a mind-blowing experience...
The closest I came to ownership was a new 1978 CX Prestige EFI 5 speed with leather.
It's self centring steering had 2.5 turns lock to lock v the SM - 2 turns.
The CX missed out on the brake button - the brake valve was disguised as a pedal.
Le sommet de l' ingénierie française. Une beauté cette sm . Bravo à tous ceux qui les restaurent, c'est le patrimoine de la France 🇨🇵
The most beautiful car and so technically advanced .
So cutting edge , even now , and I have always loved the suspension system.
I used to drive a silver SM
(ODP 591M) in the West End of London back in the late 70s. A wonderful car to drive and a real head turner.
Just been looking at a Citroen SM on display today at the classic car show Durham UK.
I would drive one on a day to day basis if could afford one. Magnificent.
"What could go wrong, when french and italians put their problems together?" 😂
On peut parler de audi ?
Love your channel, thanks a lot!
Amazing car and great video!
Love the channel man, great videos with very interesting cars. Keep them coming
Thank you! Preparing the new ones!
A very fine car, but what complication when things start to go wrong !
Yes, very few mechanics nowadays can deal with it, especially with the hydro pneumatic suspension and all the additional systems, with the same circuit. Usually there are 1-2 service shops in a whole country that can still repair something like this. But it is a part of the magic!
@@timelessdrivingin 1980s my grandfather was high up in polish communist party and my father worked as an engineer in Libia (Pol and Libian gov were friends back then) Thats why he was able to by Citroen SM and the only place where someone could fix it was aircraft factory in city Mielec where they build helicopters and jets 😅
Thank you for this video. Love the Marcos in the background. Are you going to do a video on that car too?
Haven't filmed the Marcos yet, but the next video will be with another car which is seen here on the background! ;)
💖 The SM is so adorable, thanks for sharing this with us.
It is indeed, one of the greatest cars ever made! Thanks for watching and encouraging!
pleaaaaase make a video about the Montreal in the background too, i'm begging!
Oh, yeah, it is one of my favorite cars as well! Almost had she chance to film one a few weeks ago, but it was sold just before I arrived, so it was not possible. So, still looking for a Montreal, and will definitely try my best to find one soonest!
@@timelessdriving it's not just beautiful but also it has one of the most special engines ever put in a production car since it's pure race bred but you already know better of course sorry :)) i hope you'll find it soon. i just discovered your channel and INSTANT SUB i'm sure anything you'll find will be interesting considering all these early videos are truly special cars.
The Scenery matches the good looks of the SM.
First thing you do when looking at a Citroen is look underneath to see how bad the hydraulic fluid leak is. ;-)
I own a 40 year old CX with this absolutely wonderful hydropneumatic system... no leaks. All it takes is regular maintenance. Just like any other machine then.
Flush out the green blood every 2 years. Don't let the car sit for too long. Drive it regularly.
My car is fine and goes brilliantly at 40...
How amazing do you think this Citroen was back then and how much did it impress you today?
I learnt to drive in my father’s Citroen GS 45 years ago here in England and fell in love with the whole range at the time. I also drove a 2CV, Ami 8, Dyane and CX. My first new car was a Visa Club.
The XM is one of my dream cars to own and I think it is simply stunning.
Citroen were such an innovative car company with models such as the Traction Avant all the way through to the XM. It is such a shame that the company seems to have lost its innovative spirit these last 25 years but with the current Ami perhaps that spirit is stirring again.
@@johnwaga3702 What a special attachment for Citroen you have! We admire that!
@@timelessdriving I have very happy memories of Citroens. Over the years I have had Fords, many BMWs, a Jaguar XJ8, a Mercedes S320Cdi and now a fantastic Audi A8. Yet I still miss driving the old Citroens as they had so much character. The air-cooled engines of the 2CV etc. were fantastic but it’s just a shame that Citroen never really developed a high end performance engine in-house. I look forward to your next video.
This is an UFO, not a car, flying very very low :)
Very true! What a great car manufacturer Citroen was once!
Such a pity Citroen couldn't make a car that didn't rust to bu--ery, like the CX too, so that almost none remain... I LOVE the SM!
Maibe Citroen should built these ones to Switzerland 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Maibe you mister can buy Maserati company today 😂😂😂
whats up with the mirrors not original?
Plus elle vieilli plus elle est belle..par contre je remettrai le rétro d’origine personnellement
Haute couture française.
Fun Fact: Former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin had seven Citroen SMs.
What is Bizarre about this car --- its a very weel thought out and made car full stop
So well thought out that they were without an engine after their plan to develop their own six cylinder engine was not happening, so well thought out that they had to buy another company and then gave that company a deadline of six months to supply the engine, so well thought out that that company, Maserati, took one of their V8 engines and simply cut off two cylinders to be able to produce the V6 in time...all very well thought out...build a car and then run around to find something to propel the car...indeed very well thought out...
Is this in English…???😮
the SM is not Bizarre --- with that attitude how can you undertake a review of one best cars of the 1970s ?
Bizarre is definitely a compliment here!
Diferent car, an atemtative to built a super car that only failed... in the motor. Sorry
Commutator rubbish
