That was the best blanket review I have seen so far. It was also fun and entertained. That bigger one looked like my Rothco blanket, 90/10. That one smelled bad the first four month. Thank you very much for showing this! Greetings, Ulrica
You have to remember some (not all) of the army surplus blankets were used mainly for indoors, in billets, not for out in the field (post WW2), that didn't stop you from having them in your kit but as a supplement to your sleeping bag, not instead of. You have to be a little wary when buying them too, some are very old and worn thin, I can remember being issued blankets in the 80s from WW1!! It took at least three of them for you to feel any warmth. They're great things though, I have an unworn one from the 1930s and its fantastic, can be more comfortable in summer than a sleeping bag.
+jelkel25 Thanks for the input! I have three different types now, one is 80/20 and good sized, the other two are 100% wool and a bit smaller. Have also invested in good sheep wool toques and fingerless gloves AND Alpaca toque and fingerless forearm mitts. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
I have a US blanket and I used it in the house and I woke up chilly a couple times so for outdoor use it's inadequate. I'm looking for something cheap and warmer. Mine weighs 3.5 lbs and I found a polish that weighs 4.4to5.5 so I'm hoping it's warmer.
The way I quickly wrapped up was a way that I saw on a Dave Canterbury video last year, not too sure if that is the best way or not. Coldest I have slept in the blanket, in a small 2 person tent on a lightweight Thermarest at about 7C temps overnight, no warmth issues at all. With my -30 sleep system in the truck nearby if it didn't go well. If you are a 'mover' when you sleep you will likely wake up and have to rewrap a few times overnight. One more tool in the box for shelter components.
Thanks Ulrica. My wife almost made me throw the first blanket out as it smelled of 'surplus' so bad, I got a tip to hang it out in the sun for a few hours, for a few times and it worked! It still smells of wool but not in a disgusting way. Thanks for watching my friend.
Glad you sent me this, it is good stuff, and reaffirms some things for me my research is showing to be true out in the field and on "paper" also so to speak. I have used the cooling system here in S. Ontario to try about 10 different base layer and config's with the only 90/10 blanket I have. Man, when you have it under you as a layer in the hammock, what a difference. Only improves with a decent underquilt too. I am laser focused now as you know in sourcing me 3-4 proper, decent deals on 100% wool blankets. TY also for your help as always. Good you showed here you were 6', I did not think you were that tall, shows good perspective. IDK why more people don't use tape measures in their videos lol, I knew last year I would be using them in mine if I did them. (:
For sure man. I agree with the tape measure, why not use proper tools? I just did a couple MRE vids and use my laser temp gauge after using the flameless ration heater. I agree with the wool blanket in the hammock, its super effective without needing a huge trapped air void for insulation like a thermarest or big ass down underquilt. Currently I have at least 10 hammocks and as many tarps, there will be a series or a mega video talking about those one day. That and the hot beverages from the MRE's that I never try lol
I have slept in both, the thinner but more dense 90/10 blend is warmer by a small margin. I have a feeling it is because it is larger and I can wrap myself up more effectively. Thanks for watching!
Cool video. I hadn't actually seen how to wrap yourself in a blanket like that before, so that's useful. It's like swaddling a baby. :) We always called in burrito baby. :) Wonder what I'd call it for an adult. So you sleep outside in just this (plus your clothes) and stay warm in the cold? I know everyone says they do it, but I guess I'm hesitant to do it compared to a sleeping bag. :)
Thanks for watching Karen. I also got a lb of parched corn and a lb of parched peas from Turkeyfoot, too lazy to make them myself and the price was right.
Just keeping the options open. A wool blanket is also not flammable for the most part so if you wanted or needed to sleep near the fire it is safer. Blankets are also good ground mats or can be bundled up to be a cloak if necessary. Thanks for watching
I was just teasing you about the written comment on your vid at 1:32..Great vid actually, and i'm so glad you helped me figure out where to buy the 100% blankets. i checked out the website you mentioned. Looks good! I'm gonna get some. THANKS! ps you might gain a few subscribers too...lol just kidding ya. but prob true! :)
i use a 100% usgi wool blanket but it cost around 25 bucks. worth every penny. its 65% new wool and 35% reprocessed wool. i dont know the size on it but im 6'1 and it wraps around me really well. but my girlfriend is only five feet tall exacty so for her im planning on buying a foreign surplus one thats smaller but still 100% wool. i might just go with the turkish blanket for her.
Cole Duprey Thanks for watching and commenting! If you have a source for those blankets please post a link to them, you can't have too many wool blankets.
Thanks. No, I don't sleep naked when camping. I'm FAR too sexy. I'd get raped by a bear! Great video. Thanks. Also, any thoughts on those Harbor Freight wool blankets? They're pretty cheap.
Set them on fire? No way man, wool is fire retardant, although I won't be testing that any time soon, I just got the new blanket, it has to be clean and pretty for a while at least. Thanks for watching
Initially they smelled of mothballs and sheep fur but after spending a few days on the laundry line in the summer they aren't noticeable anymore. Thanks for watching!
I'm personally new for this semi prepping, Just bought British AFW waistcoat, "waiting it to arrive tomorrow or day after" and huge plans to improving that "set up" and planning to stuck mil tec poncho and self made filler made polar fleece for it, with hole for head, and planning to add poncho, filler and paracord, "enough to tie up hammock from paracord, and all inside my waistcoat, in portion meant to for bulletproof vests.... If I can keep it thinner than 3/4 inch or so...... And I have poncho & filler & sleeping bag, hammock, inside my waistcoat and some candles as emergency warming although it's well over decade since we had actually winter time.....
henk Schutte My words are pretty limited, we came here when I was about 2 and my parents insisted on speaking English at home. With my new videos, the intro and outro music is by my cousin Bram back in Holland.

No problem dude, thanks for watching!
Really great comparison - and channel.
Why would you use a blanket rather than a sleeping bag. Is there any good reason? Thanks

Nice, I have the same one "the bigger" one but haven't tried it yet! Thanks for the vid! I'll check that web site tho! Take Care and get better soon!
Indeed. At the price that they are you could take a couple and make a coat or other clothing item as well with them. Thanks for watching.
Right on, thanks for watching!

Thank you for watching, it was more off the cuff than it may appear.
well made video..thanks for your time..safe journeys
You are right, It is your kids.
Was there a difference in comfort? The Chec blanket looked like a potato sack!
If you slept in them naked, maybe the Czech one is a bit rougher but if you are mostly clothed, no, not a big difference,
