Living in France & French Stereotypes | Très Cliché ?

  • Hello friends! Today we are talking about French stereotypes 😊 Living in France was one of the best experiences for me and I thought it would be fun to have a look at some typical French stereotypes. I wanted to share with you my point of view as a foreigner who used to live in France. If you have watched the popular Netflix show Emily in Paris, you’ve probably seen a lot of weird situations but I can assure you that for the most part what you watched in Emily in Paris is way too exaggerated and doesn’t have anything to do with the Parisian lifestyle. 😊
I hope you enjoy my French makeup series on TH-cam. See below some of the other videos from my French for a day section.

I’m from the US - Southern California. I seem to find that there are a lot of regional differences throughout my country. My grandmother is from Louisiana and older southern people are big on being respectful, which is a trait that is often optional in Los Angeles- which is where I live 😂

As an Italian I would say that being thin is regarded as much more important than being healthy or fit. A LOT of people are excessively thin and not fit, and that is hardly regarded as an issue, while being overweght is usually portrait as unhealthy. They are equal, but not seen as such, usually.
I recently went to the French Riviera; I had a wonderful time, and people were very nice. Being Italian, I am used to greeting people first, trying to speak French and when things aren't going well communcation-wise ask if they speak English (in French) first, and I can confirm I was always treated nicely. Paris is a bit different imo, but that happens in most capital cities, I think.

Another great video thank you! Our 1st time in Italy I wasn't aware of the required greeting when going into the shops. Going back the 2nd time and being aware of this made such a difference in our experience. I'm from Canada and one of the things you will notice is we take off our shoes when we enter someone's home. Another thing you will notice is that many of us greet even acquaintances with a hug. It's a very friendly country! I hope you get a chance to visit!

My experience living in Europe about weight is that yes there is a lot of pressure to stay fit. There is also a lot of activity built into the day. I also saw on the beach people with all body types in bikinis, which would not happen in the US. In the US only people with perfect bodies wear bikinis.

I am born and live in Northern California. I consider myself a global citizen. This is not as common a mindset in most of the country. Americans tend toward isolationism. Thankfully, through our ports, exported resources, and cooperation with Canada, this is far less true of California. Unlike some other countries, USA is very young and is actually more like many, distinct, but adjacent countries. I belong to several cultures within my country. I speak four languages and, here, you’d think that is a super power. I wish being multilingual was more of a priority. Language and sharing food are vital ways we can connect as humans.
I greatly enjoy this video series!

My college roommate was from France. She grew up between Paris and Bourdeaux. All of this is so true 😀. When you take the time to get to know the person -as you say - you can find some real education and get past any surface "snob" facade.
I do have to disagree a bit on the perception of acceptance of overweight in the US / acceptance. Yes, there is a push to love your body the way it is, but I think that message needs work. I think the high number of obese people in the US is a result of poor choices as opposed to a medical issue. It is very common to see an overweight person pushing a stroller with an obese toddler that has a can of soda in one hand and a bag of chips in the other. This indicates that some education is in order. The message needs to flip from accept/love your body as it is to "love your body - educate yourself on health / nutrition and feed yourself well".
    Thanks for the video

Good morning, Angela. We have found in our 30 years of travel to Europe, that everyone is far more educated and informed than anyone that we know in the US, sad but true. Americans have been so dumbed down that it is a tragedy. You know more about us than we do!

    • @Frenchforaday
      @Frenchforaday  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Hi Janie :) In Europe history classes in high school are very thorough and detailed. We study not only about our own countries but world history as well and that's why it appears as if Europeans know it all :) If I'm completely honest, students hate this but once they grow up they find that it was useful. Thank you so much for watching my videos and have a great weekend! xoxo

I would disagree. World history and American History are not an elective in the US they are mandatory classes in all three levels of school. I have found in my 50 years of travel, that myself as an American , is very fortunate to be born in a country with huge opportunities.

    • @Blondie77128
      @Blondie77128 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This comment is far too broad reaching, inaccurate and shortsighted. There are many Americans who may fall into this category, true, but not everyone. There are plenty of people in the UK and EU that are not so well informed. These patterns can be found in every country, culture world wide. If you only experience the metropolitan areas of course the entire country will appear more educated. Be careful of “unintentional” insults. It’s not very becoming 😊

@@melissabridge5687 Yes, I agree that we have many opportunities and the sky is the limit for what one can accomplish. Perhaps our information has a prejudiced twist that other countries do not amplify when telling our history. At any rate, we can all hope for a better tomorrow with more understanding and graciousness toward those less fortunate.

Bonjour Angela, I live in Canada now but am originally from Vienna/Austria and many, many things you mentioned sounded very familiar!! 😉 When you grow up in Europe, many cultural Etikette interlace. What is your background?? I thought you were French!! 😅 It sounds like you live in Italy right now? Here the one thing Canadians are famous for is their friendliness, and I have to agree!! But I do also know that French do not like French Canadians. I think it’s b/c of language. I think French “French” evolved with time and Canadian “French” is a bit stuck from the olden days when they arrived in the “new country”… And also, thank you so very much for the explanation of the Nuxe oil!! Very informative ❤❤❤

Greetings, I was born and raised in Western Canada. It has been my experience that the reason WC don't like Quebecers is because they see them as getting special privileges. This might be true but those privileges are more due to population density rather than simply language. WC don't like folks from Ontario either - lol.
It used to be said that Quebecers were more French than France and more Catholic than the Vatican. That has changed since the quiet revolution in the 1950's - 1960's with the fall of the Duplessis administration in Quebec.
Western Canadians tend to eat 'meat and potatoes'. This comes from a lot of farming and labour intensive families. I know growing up the only vegetable we saw on our plate was overcooked corn or peas. Potatoes were considered the main vegetable - lol. Of course that being said, if you stop over unannounced during the dinner hour we'll always find a space for you and share what we've got. If you're invited for dinner it's best to show up either on time or a few minutes early.

I have struggled with my weight since menopause although I’m not fat, but food is just calories on a plate to me. I don’t enjoy eating. I’m going to Paris with my skinny girlfriend who is a gourmet cook and wants to eat her way through Paris. Thank God we’ll walk a lot……as I do in America too. Just did 12 miles today, but this is what I ate today: one egg for breakfast, two bites of a sandwich at lunch, 2 slices of cheese pizza for dinner(seldom eat pizza). Guarantee that tomorrow I will have gained a half pound. It’s so frustrating as I was a size 2 until my mid 50’s. Americans may be more accepting about larger women but doesn’t mean we accept it in ourselves. No one says I’m overweight……it’s self imposed because I’m now a size 10. Ick

I loved this approach on your channel about the French. I have traveled Paris and other places in 🇫🇷 France. France is a really beautiful country! As a Korean, one of the things that people misunderstand about Korea, is that people did a lot of plastic surgery and wear a lot of makeup. I love makeup, but I don’t wear heavy makeup myself. Only a few wear a lot of makeup and plenty of people don’t wear that much makeup (or none at all). Of course there are many of us who didn’t do any plastic surgery, too. Hi ANGELA, I live in Palm Beach County Florida. In your most recent video you asked about differences between states. My answer is. Absolutely. If you are from New York you are most likely rude, impatient, pushy and some of the very bad traits. The more south you go the more courteous you are. For example adults from South Carolina are absolutely charming they know all the proper etiquette and respect. I live in South Florida which is a mixture of many different states so it is A mixed bag. As far as vacationing there are certain things in America you should never miss. Palm Beach Florida where I live is absolutely beautiful, if you go out west to Arizona you must see the Grand Canyon in Sedona. If you are interested in the south you must go to Charleston. My suggestion is the same as you give us about Europe. Go to small restaurants and get to know the culture of the area. America has gotten some many very bad press. Always the worst is brought out in the in the forefront news. Never judge a book by its cover. Americans are wonderful open hearted helpful and very generous people. Just always be careful as in Europe travel is always right around the corner. If you have an opportunity to visit America do some research as to where you were invited or planning to go and plan your trip accordingly. Americans buy in large do not dress well they tend to be a bit too casual which I absolutely hate. Palm Beach is elegant just as Europe, Miami is just a lot of fun and Hispanics that dress to the nines over dress over make up. But if we can just except a location for the culture as you expressed how the Italians are compared to the French it’s kind of like America embrace where you are and just except the culture in try to have a wonderful time. I hope this helped Linda from Jupiter Florida

Hi Linda, Thank you so much! This was very helpful. I've been in the US a few times but I've only visited New York, San Francisco, L.A. and the smallest town is Berkeley, CA. I have a lot of destinations on my wish list. I would love to visit Florida, I actually have relatives there, then Grand Canyon has been on my wish list since I was in my early 20s, also Texas :) In the past 2 years I couldn't even think of travelling but now I see the situation is improving and I hope I will be able to travel a bit more in the US.

I don't know why, but I was terribly amused that a video on French stereotypes included an aside that Italian men are notoriously unfaithful.

Hello From France Angela ! You are true, French people ever moan and I don’t like that ! We are lucky to live in such a nice country with a lot of advantages ! But no, ever something wrong ! Everybody in the streets for a strike! what a shame for me ! Thanks a lot for all what you said on French people !
Excuse my English , I have not speaking English for a long time 😔
I do like your videos! You are so beautiful !

I fear meeting a Parisian snob. As much as I'd love to learn from such a person, I know I'd be a crawling mess inside.
I think Australians are seen as coffee snobs, generally open and friendly, but in many Asian countries, we come across as crass, too informal and too independant.

Hi Kate :) You have no idea how much I want to visit Australia. This is a dream that I had since I was a teenager. I hope some day it will come true. I've heard that you have gorgeous beaches... well I always like to look at photos and videos. I dream of seeing the beautiful coastline. Thank you so much for the comment. Sending you hugs from Italy. xoxo

I'm so confused: To me, it sounds like you have a French accent but you are saying "When I first moved to France"...... May I ask where you are from?

Doesn't seem like a healthy lifestyle is cherished at all... with everybody smoking cigarettes

That's a bad stereotype. French people don't smoke cigarettes anymore than anyone else.

Cancer has risen in the last 30 years in France due to smoking and alcohol consumption. They are in the top 20 of countries now to die from cancer in the World. Men are 1in2 likely to get cancer and women are 1 in 3. So the French are not as healthy as they would like to believe. When I lived in Italy I saw less people smoking than in France. The Italians have a much healthier life style and diet. Doctors in the US prescribe the Mediterranean diet for a reason.

I live in California. We usually say Hi, and start a conversation. When we visited Italy in 2019, we were in the train, and the lady was serving food. I said Hi, and told her what I wanted. She didn’t appreciate it, she said “bonjourno first, ok?” 🫣🤣 I was so embarrassed.
Here, if you go say good morning sir, they will go, “hey how’s going” 😂😂😂
    Good infos 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hi Jenny :) Oh wow, that must have been a grumpy lady. lol Actually I have a funny story about the "hey how’s it going" thing. The first time when I visited the US I went to a coffee shop, the barista said "hey how’s going". In my European mind I thought the girl that was making the coffee was actually interested in how my day is going so I started explaining in detail. She gave me a strange look and my boyfriend took my hand and said "that's not what she meant". We all laughed a little at the cultural misunderstanding. 🤣😂

I also live in California, and I’ve found that some people here are surprised at friendliness - maybe because I’m in La. Whenever I ask someone providing service, how their day is going, they smile and are happy someone cares enough to ask 😢😊
