  • The Badavilinga Temple and Ugra Narsimha Temple are two significant and historically rich structures located in Hampi, Karnataka, India.
    Badavilinga Temple:
The Badavilinga Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses a massive linga (an iconic representation of Shiva) made of black stone. The word "Badavilinga" is derived from the Kannada language, where "Badava" means poor and "Linga" refers to the Shiva Linga. The temple is named so because it is believed that a poor woman dedicated this linga to Lord Shiva, and hence it is also sometimes referred to as the Poor Man's Shiva Linga.
The linga is around 3 meters in height and is always immersed in water. Pilgrims and visitors can see the linga through an opening in the doorway. The temple is a simple, open shrine without a traditional structure.
    Ugra Narsimha Temple:
The Ugra Narsimha Temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The word "Ugra" means fierce or ferocious, and the temple gets its name due to the intense expression on the face of the idol.
The central attraction of the temple is a colossal monolithic statue of Lord Narasimha seated in a cross-legged yoga position. The statue is carved out of a single boulder and stands about 6.7 meters (22 feet) tall. The image depicts Lord Narasimha with a mane, bulging eyes, and a wide-open mouth, symbolizing the ferocity associated with this particular form of the deity.
Unfortunately, the original statue is damaged, with the upper portion of the idol missing. It is believed that the original idol had a smaller image of the goddess Lakshmi seated on Narasimha's lap, but only the base of this smaller image remains.
Both the Badavilinga Temple and the Ugra Narsimha Temple are part of the extensive Hampi ruins, which collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors to Hampi often explore these temples along with other remarkable structures that showcase the architectural and cultural grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire, which thrived in this region during the 14th to 16th centuries.
