The gods were worshipped because life was scary and they provided a "reason" for the dangers. The sagas and stories are wonderful, tales to tell in the dark winter. I’ve always struggled with religions per se. Too much baggage and too many commitments. Too many questions and too much persecution. I’m a simple man, and nature doesn’t expect anything of me and doesn’t preach or dictate terms. I’ll go with that.
But academia has an agenda. All I’m asking is for a fantasy….. A fantasy that dictated the lives and cruel deaths of thousands of years of civilisation… it’s as real as the reality of Mary Seacole, who was a bright lass, not doubting it, but no way a Nightingale.
@ I get it. But there is a bit of truth in everything, and half-truths as well. We all have an agenda in pursuit of our personal fantasies. It’s the pleasure agenda. And, I am sure that institutions suffer the same. But I get what you are saying. We are all in search of some sort of unfiltered experience - and it seems that our ancestors were closer to this sort of thing than us. But how is this to be measured? Not sure. I do love the ideas you bring up in your talks. Thanks for your thoughtfulness!
06:10 "Nobody teaches our kids about gods any more". I don't know if this is true but, if so, it's a bad thing. Sadly many modern kids, rather than learning about the rich and varied culture of religions, are being indoctrinated and taught to worship, for example the recent instructions in parts of the USA for classrooms to have the Ten Commandments on display which is paving the way for a more fundamentalist approach. Christianity (obviously the Ten Commandments pre-dates Jesus somewhat but I think you get my drift) in the US is not the only culprit here; Islam, Hinduism, Judaism are all guilty to some degree. I was lucky having been educated in the UK state system in the 1960's where Christian religious education (RE) was mandated by law, it was taught in a very relaxed manner and, by the time I finished school in the early 70's, RE was more like a standard 'humanities' subject. I say, "Learn about the gods, all of them, treat them as an area of study similar to history, all religions are equal". I do not say, "Get on your knees and worship the one true Lord!" 😉No one knows the absolute truth so learn it all and be relaxed about it. Cheers👍🏼
I was also in the UK education system, and know exactly what you mean about RE. We were encouraged to discuss rather than just take on board. I am only one of a couple of people in my family who aren’t teachers. Both my kids are. My daughter, who is an acting head, gets frustrated at the confines in which she has to teach, and the lack of encouragement to think and to question. It’s as if education hasn’t built in any time to debate, question and disagree. I’ve got a bit of pushback over this post. I think that’s my fault. I failed to express exactly what I meant. I feel that most people would be fascinated by the concept of Pagan Gods, and gatherings of Gods on the summit of Olympus. It may not be relevant today, but neither was the tv series ‘Ripping Yarns’….. and we all watched that.
Liked the bit about Ostara, even so im Christian in a nod to her. i burie a hardboiled egg and a piece of easter cake in my garden every year. I thought the Faries steal the children ,or is that only in Ireland?
Hello Nigel, that was great. But Paganism is coming back big time. I think a lot of people are disenchanted with the Abrahamic religions ( myself included) and are searching for a spiritual path. Paganism, being Nature based, is very alluring and satisfying. So take heart, dear Friend, the God's are not done. ❤ Take care of you and Molly. 😊
I'm a descendent from 3 different Israel tribes & Germany. Yeshua Messiah hates child sacrifice and why many were put to death. I wish you peace and love.
Have you considered the possibility that there really is a God, Creator of the universe and that there is one Truth and if one Truth does really exist it would be worth seeking to the exclusion of that which is not true?
Yes, I’ve considered the possibility of several deities over the years. My father was devout, and I feel I was a disappointment. It will always be an albatross round my neck to think I was a disappointment to such a great man. I have chosen my road, and the things that bring me spiritual joy. I respect everyone’s right to pray to whichever God they wish. I identify as an agnostic, but that is just a bit cowardly. I suppose I’m hedging my bets, but no matter how I try, my spirituality lies in the nature around me. People suggest Paganism, but that’s just more Gods to deal with. I love the Gods of Olympus and of The Norse Lands. The Gods of Asia and those worshipped by Native Americans, but only in the abstract. I don’t believe they existed, but I believe the power they wielded..
@@primalengland I certainly agree that we should respect that everyone has a right to believe or not, as they wish. Yet there can be only one Truth. Either the One God exists or He/She does not. Either the Norse gods exist or they do not. Etc. As an agnostic, shouldn't you seek the Truth?
@@primalenglandI am new to your channel but I can completely relate to you. I am in my 60s, brought up a Catholic in the UK. In my 40s I studied Theology at university and left organised religion. I studied Buddhism and still value Buddhist philosophy. In recent years I have been drawn to Wicca. I am interested in the myths and legends of Paganism but see them more as archetypes. The goddess was worshipoed way before the god. I do not put a label on my spirituality. I dont feel a need to. I love Nature and that is the centre of my spirituality. I do not like organised religion and always felt there was no place for me there as a woman. That is one reason why so many women are turning away from organised religion and finding their voice in Wicca and Pagan spifituality. Thank you for talking about the old gods and a Blessed Yule to you.😊
@@primalenglandiI dont think it is cowardly to be agnostic. None of us 'know' for certain although religious people claim they are certain. I am quite happy to say 'I dont know'. All I know is that I feel very spiritual out in Nature and I dont need an ancient book to tell me how to live.

That happened all over northern Europe, but I think it was only in Ireland where adults were also taken. Can’t trust them Oirish Faeries.
@primalengland 🤣🤣 so much for UNITED Kingdom
@@angelikac6767 we love each other really. 😊
@primalengland was just joking, all things considered, now may be a good time to give Odin a nodd too, carve a protective symbol of his in your lintel

Thank you for talking about the old gods and a Blessed Yule to you.😊
Which god are you referring to? Christian, Hindu, Muslim, etc, etc.
@@primalenglandiI dont think it is cowardly to be agnostic. None of us 'know' for certain although religious people claim they are certain. I am quite happy to say 'I dont know'. All I know is that I feel very spiritual out in Nature and I dont need an ancient book to tell me how to live.
