Suzuki DR650 - Onward

  • First real ride after the crash, been almost two weeks of healing up and I felt well enough to go for a longer ride on the DR650 since I'm still on the 'break in' miles. I had rode the KLR earlier in the day to the dealership and it was great but a short ride so I figured I'd just continue on with the DR650. I also got to try out some padded shorts by Bodyprox on this ride. I bought a pair of these after I got some comments from other riders regarding protection so I thought I'd give them a try. They have plenty of padding, I actually removed the pads along the hip since my riding pants already have armor but kept the tail padding in. I didn't find them annoying but I probably will only wear them when I'm doing more off road riding.
    On this ride I get to see how the DR650 rides at highway speeds in high winds and also do some easy riding on the dirt. I was actually surprised the wind didn't knock me around as much as I thought it would and the DR650 rode great from 55 to 75 mph including uphill. Love it!

    I don't know enough about you or your channel to know where you live. It looks beautiful though - even the view from your garage! Those wide streets with the view of the mountains. I want to retire somewhere like that. I envy you. Hope you are feeling better. Edit: Pine valley Mountains are in Utah...So beautiful there.

    Glad your recovering well from your spill. The DR seems like a nice bike. Stay safe. ✌️

    I enjoyed the time lapse on the way out to the trail. Nice getting back out there so quick.

    Good deal and hate to hear about the accident . Good thing you had the riding gear on or it could have been worse .

      Oh indeed, even though I got banged up good...it still could've been so much worse!

    I don't wear the shorts that have full coverage, but the hip pads type have been a real savior at times. I figured I'd risk by tail bone and ass-end in order to not overheat anymore than I already do.

      Yeah, the shorts are hot...no doubt about that! Anything to mitigate injury is a good thing!

    Yeah it's hard to resist a nice spring day. Hope you get all healed up soon. Are you going to go for an expanded gas tank on the DR?

      Each day a little better, thanks! I am, think I'll do the Acerbis tank. Watched a few install videos, doesn't look too complicated.

    I own DR650. Perfect bike for 80% dirt / 20% pavement style of riding where pavement is just short connections between long dirt sections, like BDR. Really underpowered at highway speed. In the same weight category a KTM 690 is much better but way too expensive.

    Maybe you mentioned it, and I missed it, but how does the vibration compare with your KLR?

    • @precipiceofgrind
      @precipiceofgrind  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't noticed any vibration on the Suzuki compared to the KLR. It's really not bad on the Gen 3 KLR, my 2022 model doesn't bother me at all. My 2012 KLR would numb my hands after a half hour of riding!

    • @jeffreybobeck9809
      @jeffreybobeck9809 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@precipiceofgrind I have a DR650, but I sat on a new KLR-S in the showroom and I was just amazed at how comfortable the seating position and controls are for me. It was the last bike that I ever thought I would be interested in. The standard height KLRs are completely unmanageable for me. I like my DR650, but I don't want another bike that buzzes the handlebars like my DR650. Test rides on new bikes are of course, nearly impossible to obtain. My DR650 is a 2012 with low miles, but it is possible that the rubber mount bushings have hardened up. Since you own both, I really appreciate your opinion.

      @@precipiceofgrind Which one vibrates more?

    • @precipiceofgrind
      @precipiceofgrind  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffreybobeck9809 Presumably I would say the KLR but I still haven't had any rides over 60 miles on my DR650 yet so I can't say for certain. I haven't noticed much vibration at all with my DR and like I mentioned, the new KLRs have drastically reduced the vibration.

    You should test speed with gps, that speedo reads about 6 mph high at those speeds, just so you don't wonder why everyone is blowing by you. They still ride nice at the real speed though.
