    I rode a yamaha XT500 and Suzuki GS750 in Oz in 1987. Great bikes. I now have a DR650. Great bikes apart from 3rd gear pinion and nsu bolts. Its worth sorting out stuff like cam chain tensioner too.

      @ADVRiderAustralia  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My 4th gear went at about 90k not 3rd. Cam chain and tensioner were perfect and nsu was tight so no issues there. Stock clutch plates were great, next to no wear on bore or piston. Just ride it bro 😎

    Your passion about your DR650 has sold me to get one. Fuel prices are a bit too up there to afford 4wd touring as much as I’d like. I’m keen to get my bike licence, a DR650 and start touring and camping with it!

    Nice one! I know exactly what you mean. Riding my DR600 (kick only) since 34 years and still love it. Been to the Sahara on it and it never let me down. Yes, there are more fancy and more powerful bikes around but when it comes down to reliability and simplicity there are not too many bike around which come up to the DRs. Your bike is the consequent improvement of my old thumper. Sometimes, I wish I had an e-starter😅. Take care and ride safely.

I missed them after a couple of months. I thought I would be happy just having the R1200GS to play around on the gravel, but as you can imagine, I'm like mmm I wonder what's down that track.......and inevitably I end up lugging the GS over logs and shit, getting too old for that. You have a great Adeventure DR there. I thought I had a lot of mods on my DR until I came here. I think the most valuable addition for mine has been the stainless case savers I bought from Procycle. I've come off my DR many times on more extreme adventure rides and with the amount of times the brake or gear shift lever have put a dent in the case protectors I'm sure I'd have punctured those soft cases if they hadn't been added. Also had the FMF muffler. Loved the sound but mine needed regular repacking (every 5000k's or so) which didn't sit well with me since the stock muffler doesn't ever require it. Switched to the LeoVinceX3 for that reason. It's a bit quieter and not as crisp as the FMF IMO but at least no maintenance. Agree with the Safari tank petcock. Maybe they've changed them since but back in 2012 they were utter rubbish. One of mine started leaking while I was crossing the Simpson.

    • @ADVRiderAustralia
      @ADVRiderAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The case savers are something I'll probably get round to doing one day although don't have them on my other 6 bikes and never really had an issue with holing a case but that's not to say it won't happen.
      I repacked the FMF once and used stainless steel scouring pads before wrapping the muffler packing around it. Has been good for probably 20k since then. Biggest problem I has was the end cap rivets blowing out. I doubled the amount of rivets and no issues since. It's a good light weight unit and only wanted to buy once so I bought the best. I have an old barret laying around if that one eventually fails. Thanks for the comments mate 👍

      I can relate man. I was washing my bike after I got it brand new and trailering it back home across states and to get to a clean spot on the wheel I just turned the wheel while sitting on the floor which kicked up the kicked stand and left a decent gouge on my crank case cover. I had less than a hundred miles on the bike 😂

      I have been tempted by the T700 and the new Ducati but a couple of weeks ago did a 2100klm remote solo ride and thought...there's no way I'm riding out here on a hi tech bike. In some places it might’ve been a week before another car came through. Not a chance I am willing to take with a mass of wiring and electricals.

      Procycle might put more pep in a DR's step. Jeff shaved a DR down to 320lb curb. He also sells hotter cams, 790 big-bore kits, hi-comp piston kits, pumper carbs, exhausts, big-valve heads, suspensions, etc.
      At 320lb curb, that's similar to a DR-Z400S, CRF250L, or XR650R.

      I had a dream of riding all the way around Australia on either of my bikes but then 2020 happened . This planet is 95% clown world and that's saying it nicely . Wish the sheeple would have seen the lies for what they were/are but no such chance out here in Northern Commiefornia . France is fighting back , you guy's were fighting back here and there but good 'ol America bent right over and said how deep . Shame .
      Anyway didn't mean to rant , I guess it's the coffee lol . Like what you've done with your bike . The main reason I went with the Tenere is that you need a bike that can do 80mph easy with out struggling . The freeway and highway speeds are 75 to 85 when people get going and I know that I was pushing my DR650 at 75 80 , it could do it but it didn't want to be there very long . Mine was pretty stock , all I did was lithium battery Thumper Jockey pod lights ( loved those ) and a box of stuff I had planned on adding . New owner got all that . I need to learn the things you know about motorcycles as I didn't grow up around them unless I was sneaking rides on a friend's dirt bike . Probably should get a project bike in good running condition but wrench the crab out of it and make it nice . Good way to learn . Have to thank you Aussies for spurring me into action in 2018 when I rediscovered my love for dual sport adv bikes . All the videos and watching Mad Mick blasting through the jungle making his own trail on Africa Twins , hilarious and amazing . You guys are the Champs !

    I saw a note about the sidestand switch. Be careful with that damn thing. If the diode involved in the safety part of this circut fails, the engine will not start, and there is no part number or a replacement for this silly thing. If anyone knows how to make the wire system to by pass the diode, you should share the knowledge. My 650 died, and after replacing EVERYTHING that will unplug from CDI on down including fuses solenoids, etc. still, no sparks or headlight. The rest of the bike is great, and it ran well. A case of beer to anyone who as a used diode marked R3 on both sides... Thanks

    Amazing build! It really ticks all the boxes for a lightweight adventure bike. Actually, I was scrolling down the comments to see if you have mentioned what is the approximate fully loaded weight of the bike?
    Lately, I am thinking a lot of a DR650 as a light alternative to my other adventure bikes (V-Strom 650 and Africa Twin 650) but the main problem here in Europe is the lack of DR650s after 2002 (when they stopped selling them due to emission standards).

      Hey Dale, I get between 3 & 5000klm on knobbies depending on what I choose. At the moment I'm running a Pirelli M21 on the rear and just put a Mitas Eagle C-19 Enduro on the front. My go to tyre on the rear is the Metzler Karoo 3. Fronts I just grab whatever. KLR is a comparable bike but the lack of radiators were the deciding factor on choosing the DR over the KLR. Just bought mine 3 weeks ago. So far 127 miles and love it. As soon as it's broken in I'm planning some changes. While most of my riding is off road trails and rocky mountain roads I love that I don't have to haul it. That said I have noticed that it has a definite lag when pulling away from a stop unless I rev it to around 1000 rpms and slide out the clutch lever. So here's my thoughts. I suspect that the intake vacuum is a little bit low at low rpms. Which translates to slow response of the diaphragm style carburetor. Which causes the bike to nose dive in the middle of an intersection (usually it will stall). If my hypothesis is correct I'll be installing a big bore pumper carby in the near future(probably a flat slide variety) but I haven't settled on one that is plug and play yet. Any input is welcome.

    • @ADVRiderAustralia
      @ADVRiderAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว

      I reckon your float level is the problem mate. If you tip the bike over and fuel starts coming out before you hit about 45 degrees, float level is too high.
      Have ridden plenty with various pumper carbs and with modified membrane versions. The Procycle Jetting is great with the airbox mods but not so good for traversing deep water...

    • @patrickmurray3064
      @patrickmurray3064 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Iceberg Stu appreciate your input. I'll definitely check the float level. I've read that the DR650 tends to be a little bit sluggish in the lower rpm range, which is what I'm seeing. It forces me to either give it a twist or slip the clutch on takeoff. It does have plenty of mid range power. So far the only thing I've had to do was to adjust the idle set screw. For some reason the dealership had it idling around 1400rpms. It would backfire out of the exhaust on shutdown every time after the engine had stopped. That indicated a lot of unburned fuel in the hot exhaust. I changed the idle down to around 750rpms and the backfire went away. However it's picked up the stalling issue. Which I can overcome for street riding by getting the rpms up before I engage the clutch. However there are plenty of times in off pavement riding that it's necessary to be able to idle over technical challenges in the trail. Without a great deal of finesse on the clutch and a crank of the throttle it will almost always stall. I'll check the float level and see where it is for sure, and might consider modifying the airbox and rejetting. Since I don't plan on getting in deep water that might be a viable option.

      @@patrickmurray3064 another thing that will liven it up is to go up to a 44 ot 45 tooth rear Sprocket.
      Unless you plan to be doing 100 mph everywhere either of these will do the trick. 42 is standard, I'm running a 43 rear at the moment after changing down from a 44. I have seen no improvement in fuel economy so will go back to a 44 to keep the revs up when I'm riding.

    • @patrickmurray3064
      @patrickmurray3064 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Iceberg Stu I think that is probably the best starting point. I'm accustomed to riding my 1200cc V4 Suzuki that has unlimited lower end torque. Getting used to giving a little more throttle is likely the biggest factor. I don't like to have to feather the clutch as much. So a bigger number rear sprocket would likely be a lot better for me. I'll give it a try and see where it goes. But it certainly can't hurt.

      I hate full knobby tyres on the highway which is why I rarely travel on the highway. If I do choose to travel highway I just put up with it knowing that traction off-road is fun and safe. Quartering your braking distance, absolute quality traction on the front wheel and not getting bogged on dirt is super important for me. You do not see many older Suzuki's around but a lot of Kawasaki's.
    For the Japanese big 4 as far as longevity, quality and fit and finish Suzuki is at the bottom of the pile and not just in the enduro/ dual sport category of bikes but across the product lines.
    Has been that way for a few decades now and Suzuki is the most likely to be the first one that folds and goes out of business among those companies as well.
    What is the last bike and what year was it Suzuki has brought to market that really is tops in the category it was introduced in?

      Way too much bias Bill W. - I own bikes from most majors and Suzuki are fine. Tons of old Suzuki's around here including my old DR and 86 GSXR, friends Vstrom, all rode hard!
      The KLR is a VERY different riding/feeling bike from the DR. KLR issues (2nd gen) are well documented. My friend with the KLR rides it HARD off road but it's really not as good in the hard stuff as a DR. Check out the wet weight 357lbs DR to 432lbs KLR... granted they're both pigs compared with KTM, etc.
      I rode from Calgary to Moab on my DR (780cc, emulators, stock shock, no windscreen) with a friend on KLR650 2nd gen (big bore, pipe, stock suspension). KLR is far, far, far better on the highway measured by comfort and fuel range - similar HP. Offroad the DR is quite a bit better.
      Both these bikes will handle adv riding just fine just with small differences in capability. KLR much better for less difficult greater distance touring with highway while the DR is better for tougher stuff and not so great on the highway (the bike will handle it but with no fairing it's a bit of a pain).
      Both bikes are great and either bike can be modified to address it's weaknesses just depends on where you want to start.
