  • ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has penned a scathing letter to DA Leader John Steenhuisen accusing him of shifting goalposts in negotiations over cabinet positions. In letter seen by the SABC, Ramaphosa says he informed Steenhusinen that they found the letter from DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille offensive, condescending, and inconsistent with the Constitution.
The DA was demanding 11 ministers and deputy and wanting to fire Director Generals in those portfolios. Ramaphosa in the letter further says the DA has been disruptive and uncooperative in the negotiations unlike other parties.
Ramaphosa says he believe the DA has jeopardized the foundation of setting up a Government of National Unity by moving the goalposts in a letter of 24 June 2024 written by John Steenhusen to him. The ANC President says he is truly taken aback by how the DA now want two more portfolios to bring their portfolios to 8.
The President further says the latest proposals by the DA do not, align with the principles adopted and encapsulated in the Statement of Intent. Ramaphosa further alludes that DA proposals that have been submitted undermines the process they had committed to the following - open, grounded, consistent, constitutionally compliant, engagements, honouring the collective understanding of our goal to create a government that reflects the will of the people.
President Ramaphosa says he intends to conclude all negotiations and consultations this week.
Let's take this further now we are joined by our Politics Reporter Samkele Maseko.

I think these negotiations must be televised so that we can know and understand who wants what and for what reason. After all, it is the people who voted that must benefit from the appointments.

All parties must now realize that NOBODY reached the majority. They should work together for the benefit of the residents of RSA. All ministers that was charged with corruption and/or crime, should not be allowed back. Parties agreed to clean RSA from all things not fair and criminal, to benefit all. Therefore, one party cannot dictate appointments of criminals and others trying to do the right thing. This will end badly, as the people of RSA spoke with votes, showing their unhappiness with the previous ruling party, and the way the country was run down. Politicians need to urgently realise that they are only "workers of the people" as per votes of the people of RSA.

Mzansi people must now know all the details as was discussed in the initial negotiations where it was agreed Presidency and the chairmanship (Selectee and nominee),
Presidency was handed over to Hon Ramaphosa, same as chairmanship, this was mainly Trio negotiations (IFP, DA and ANC), (other parties and their leaders are followers, and subscribers)
Hon Ramaphosa is playing chameleon, changing colours by the wind.
The power of the statement of intent prevented bloodshed in our country, in many many way,
Spears were sharpened, but the appetite for bloodshed lost momentum because of unite GNU through the Statement of Intent.
So, Hon Ramaphosa, ego aside, respect the efforts that made your presidency and yr life easy, and please don’t be the one changing goal posts.
Ramaphosas recent trail record did not deserve presidency this time round. So truth be told,
But the decision for GNU 🤝
A gamble but this will rewrite history,
You are welcome to disagree 🤸🏾‍♂️

The Democratic Alliance is unlikely to abandon the Government of National Unity (GNU) because they would face significant losses if they did so. The DA is also concerned that the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters might join forces to become the official opposition, which would strengthen the voices of the progressive parties Therefore, remaining part of the GNU is strategically important for the DA to maintain their political influence and avoid diminishing their standing.
