As someone who owns the Romancing SaGa 2 remaster (along with several other SaGa games), I have to say that I'm impressed with this remake. Modernizing the series without sacrificing its identity. Another RPG going to my already massive backlog. Nice review dude.
I only recently got into the SaGa games not too long ago, so I had most details of Romancing SaGa 2 very fresh in my mind because I only just played the HD pixel remaster about a month ago, and I have to say that this 3D remake was simply awesome. It stays faithful to the story, tone and mechanics of the original, while simplifying and making clearer a lot of things, tweaking some things a bit so that they work better in a modern game, and even adding some extra stuff like more detail to the admittedly scant story, including the backstory of The Seven. I was even surprised to see that even though they removed the optional dungeon Maze where you meet the Ninja and the Diviner, both classes are integrated into the main quest-line as two sub-quests that you can do. After finishing both games I can say that I loved both equally. This is how this kind of remake should be. The game is so faithful to the original that stuff I remembered about where to find hidden stuff or how to solve a quest that had some gimmick from the original game was still useful here even if things weren't exactly the same.
9:10 adding to this section. After the using a unit as Emperor, that unit will retain the level after choosing another Emperor. It is a great way to level up a variety of weapon levels and magic elements.
Great review! I've never been very interested in the Romancing series but this one is looking really good. Hopefully I can find time to play it sometime soon.
Nice review👍. Good to hear this game turned out great. I´ve already pre-ordered this game, Romancing SaGa 2 is my favorite game to replay on a regular basis the last 5 years.
It’s insanity. I had never played an Atlus game and tried Metaphor Refantazio. Now I’m getting Platinum in that, already bought Persona 5 Royal, and Persona 3 reload, want to play Unicorn Overlord, and now this remake also. I don’t have timeeeeee
Such a talented team made that made this remake. A fantastic game that I recommend to anyone who likes video games! Extremely addicting gameplay, a bit of strategy choosing your formation, discover and take advantage of enemies weaknesses, all within a frantic and fast-paced, almost arcadey gameplay. Hurry up and play the game!
Are you hurt Gérard. 😂 good review. I played the demo and loved it and ordered the game. Definitely my suprise game of the year knowing little about the saga games
Damn youuuu putting this idea into my head 🤣🤣🤣🤣 which are you gonna play first? Im trying to decide which to buy and play first but seeing you say you picked up all 3, im wondering whether to do the same 🤣
I think this is easily my personal game of the year for 2024. I played a bit of the Remaster on Switch years ago, but never did finish it, but this remake totally captivated me. Square-Enix and Xeen really knocked this one out of the park. I really hope this is only the beginning of more remakes of the SaGa games in this new engine and style. I think my only hope is that the Switch version get some patching to fix some of the graphical problems and loading times whenever the Switch 2 comes out. This game looks stunning on PC and PS5 but the Switch version while completely playable took a huge hit in the graphics department with random pop in and sometimes details on sprites not loading in. I am curious if there may have been a way to have the game data installed on the Switch to try to alleviate some of these issues.
I normally research games pretty throughly before I buy them but I bought this game on a whim after just taking quick look and I'm glad I did. Its a pretty difficult game until you get how to play it a bit better, had I heard about the difficulty prior to playing the first time I would not have bought it probably but I'm loving it. I'm 53 hours into myself and not yet done with my first playthrough.
Gotta admit I loved the demo, but was really on the fence about buying the game, as I never played the orginal either, but you pushed me over that fence, and I just pre-ordered a copy 👍
Yeah he debuted in Final Fantasy Legend 2 (SaGa 2) This is technically SaGa 5, but just like the Final Fantasy games each title is a standalone experience. The director of this series actually started on Final Fantasy II on the NES.
I picked this game up and have not put it down. It’s fantastic. Graphics, sound and gameplay are hitting all the right notes and the glimmer system is an addictive loop for those who love to unlock new systems in their games. I usually prefer the 2D sprites of the originals but the team who did the Trials of Mana remake did a fantastic job in transitioning all assets to 3D. Awesome JRPG and ahead of its time when it was originally released on the Super Famicom.
Sucks to choose, but they’re actually all very different from each other. So it’s really what style game do you like. For example this game is the pick for me. But the other ones are really good too.
First time here . Game sounds fun. I've got the game but my backlog is so big I don't know when I will get to it. I have been playing Metaphor and its my game of the year for now. Good review. Subbed.
SaGa Frontier is a great game, but it did a really shit job of explaining its mechanics and the graphics are a bit dated at this point. It really deserves a remake like this game. It was my first dive into this franchise, I am not really a big fan of the newer SaGa games, but Final Fantasy Legend 1-3, Romancing SaGa 1-3 and SaGa Frontier are all amazing. I really wish the director would go back to the style of these older titles. I feel like they started to get hella weird after the PS1 era
It's the only SaGa game I've played, and Square have delivered a doozy. I'm about to start my third NG+. If I could give one tip; at the top two difficulty levels, the Heroes and bosses especially get lethal new abilities and spells. They are best managed by keeping your encounter rate as low as possible. Do all the grindy stuff mostly in your first and second playthroughs. Also: If one of your party is down to their final LP, and you don't have any "phoenix" type abilities as life insurance for them - swap them at the tavern to preserve any new glimmers they've learned, so that the next time skip seals those spells and techs. May seem like a pain to get a new party member up to speed, but it's better than a permadeath meaning you have to get all that character's learned glimmers again.
I had tried to play “Romancing Saga” 2 & 3 fan-subs before, but was soooo confused. Started with the demo of this remake & ❤’ing it!!! I feel like I finally have a better grasp of the systems & the QoL improvements are excellent!
Yeah I feel like Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song (remake of RS1) and this remake did an amazing job explaining all the mechanics in a way that makes the game easy to play and gives you knowledge you can take with you into other titles in the series. These games all play like one another till you get to Unlimited SaGa. That’s was pretty much the point I started losing interest in the franchise. I wish the director would get back to the roots.
This game is will blow your mind if you haven’t played it yet. There is a free demo out to try the game out and see if you like it. This is easily my game of the year for 2024.
I was gonna get it but I realized ys comes out the next day. I still need to play the og saga 2 anyways. Also the ys preorder at least comes with physical goodies unlike this that has in game items that expire lol
How much playtime do i get with the full game? If i choose an inheritance, does this mean this character is excluded in future inheritances? Are there any time restrictions or limits in this game like in Persona5/Metaphor: ReFantazio?
So basically the way the inheritance works in this game is that you pick a new emperor after 1 of a few different things happens. 1. Your current Emperor dies aka all their LP runs out. 2. You freely choose at the throne to pick a new emperor. 3. Enough events or story missions have been completed that the game auto skips ahead a few hundred years. When you pick a new emperor your are given a selection of classes you have in your unit and this list of classes changes as you recruit new classes. The new emperor will gain all stats, HP, MP and weapons levels from the previous Emperor(s), but now you will be adding whatever unique things the new class has to the growing list of things the emperor is good at. By the time you get to the final emperor you will have all of the skills and stats of all previously picked classes. This also works in the opposite too. So let’s say you pick a Samurai to be your emperor and you get the Great Sword skill to lv 40; your emperor and the samurai class the next generation will share this stat. As for missable, there are missable things in this game, but it’s nothing that will make the game unbeatable. These games were designed with the intention of being replayed. They purposefully pack enough content into them that it’s literally impossible to do everything in a single playthrough. Just have fun and enjoy the ride. Another note I will add that isn’t mentioned in the game but is useful to know is that a character dying in the game doesn’t mean you will lose that class. This game runs on a cycle of 8 named characters per class and will go back to the 1st one after the 8 have been gone through. So don’t stress out if someone dies. You can go back to the bar and recruit the next person for that class. Some characters actually have better stats than others, so it can sometimes be a blessing to let a character die.
Random question but did they add the ability to remove motion blur in the full release? The motion blur in the demo was so strong and made me feel a little bit of motion sickness. I really want to support this release so I have they have at least reduced it or given us the option to turn it off.
Just had a look and compared it to my demo footage, and I can't see much difference but I'm not very good at noticing motion blur. There's nothing in the options either, I'm playing on PS5. Hopefully if the demand is there, they'll consider it
What did u play it on? I hate motion blur first thing I check for and turn it off but I played the entire demo and I didn't find it as bad as usual SE titles but yes I would still want it off. There are some settings u can put in the .ini file but hit or miss if it works. It did nothing for me but others say it works
