Pants fitting tips: If you have a pair of store-bought pants where you really like the fit, turn them inside-out and trace out the pattern. I use the rolls of IKEA paper meant for kids easels - inexpensive, unlimited length, and wide enough for many patterns.
I place it on top of a big bulletin board. Then I pin the pants that fit onto the paper (stab down like a butterfly collector), keeping grain lines straight and square. Then poke pins through along the sewing line to make a dotted line on the paper (if I’m having trouble tracing the sewing line). I do all four pieces, even though there will be two duplicates, and average them out. (The “wasted” paper can be cut up for shopping lists, etc.)
By cutting this out on the sewing line, you can easily put it on top of the commercial pattern you’d like to use, and see how the curves, back and front rises, depths, etc. compare. Adjust the commercial pattern accordingly to the known-good-fit.
I always do a quick test version for any new pants pattern. Having some “crap plaid” fabrics (inexpensive and possibly ugly colors/not fav material) on hand to make a quick knee length mock up. No real waistband (sew onto a strip of salvage edge), no pockets (pin the pocket pattern to the front), etc… just testing for fit. The plaid will show immediately where things are going awry, because the plaid will not be level and plumb where it’s not fitting. And it’s clear where I need to add or remove fabric, to make it level and plumb… bonus, the plaid works like a built-in, all-over ruler.
Using a 1 inch seam allowance for the test pants isn’t a bad idea either, in case you need to add somewhere. And of course use the longest basting stitch in a contrasting color (great use for that thread color you figure you’ll never use again).
The extra seam allowance also means chances are you can re-cut them for future tests, until they eventually get re-cut to become rags. So you’re not just contributing to a land fill when testing a pattern this way.

Karina (Lifting Pins and Needles here on TH-cam) has an excellent series of videos on pants fitting. She also makes a lot of patterns from indie designers (such as Love Notions) and talks about fabric characteristics they require and often includes possible modifications with her makes. I find her to be a wonderful resource when I'm a little stuck.

Agree 100%. I could also recommend TomKat Stichery TH-cam channel. The book *pants for real people” is also useful in modifying pants patterns. P.S. my sewing skills are far superior than my knitting skills. I would not dare recommending anything to you about knitting! 😅

I recently got fed up with repeatedly being unhappy with yarn purchases, loved the yarn, hated it on myself. I was buying petty yarn, but the colors looked terrible on me. I took a few days to research my color ‘season’ and am now only purchasing clothing and yarns in my season. I haven’t been unhappy about any of my purchases since.

So pleased your buttonholes worked out in the end. I never ever do them at the end of a long day sewing - they always go wrong then. I do as you did and try again the next day and it all goes fine then. It's just one of those sewing things. 😀

It's so interesting to see the progress of all your projects. In my opinion, the cyan/blue color on the robe you sewed or a teal would be a good color for your hand dyed sweater.

Thank you for all the skills you impart to your viewing audience. I am a long-time quilter, former sewist and now a knitter! I have gotten back into sewing garments, so I appreciate your insight. Getting pants to fit is/was a nightmare! I have not ventured into knits since I only have straight-stitch machines for quilting and piecing. Maybe soon? It’s a gift to be 66 and revisit my garment making days. 😁

About your hand spun sweater, I made similar mistake in a bolero type of cardigan that turned out too big in the shoulders. Then after blocking didn’t solve my problem, I decided to wash again and felt that area by hand carefully in the inside of the cardigan and it shrank a bit. Sufficient enough that now I liked a lot better! Regardless, your sweater is very beautiful! Love your channel! Thank you for sharing your work with us!❤

    Love hearing your thought process!
For the Brooklyn Tweed yarn, how about a plum ? (Hex color 673147) I think it would work with the grey yarn underneath. It’s dark enough that you’d probably want a second color to be lighter or the original gray.

I’m sorry your hand spun sweater didn’t turn out just like you planned, but I’m glad you’ll still wear it. ♥️
Congratulations on learning more sewing skills. At some point, when you feel ready for it, you might want to take the flat pattern and draping classes at the U. You won’t necessarily start making all of your patterns from scratch, but you’ll learn tons about how to alter patterns to change the design of something and have it work out the first time.

I love your red blouse and your robe looks great too. You'd be surprised how well behaved even quite fine cotton lawn can be - it's very tolerant of careful unpicking and re-stitching. I often hand baste trickier looking parts of my sewing project, but either in or outside of the seamline for easier removal! I will always hand baste armscye seams, it's the only way to ensure you don't get an unexpected pleat in the sleeve or bodice!

Hi Roxanne. Your red blouse is stunning! Perfect color for you as well! Even though the pants didn’t come out as you would have liked, they look really nice! As far as colors go, I’m always into the jewel tones. Reds that have blue undertones, mauves, cranberry, purples etc. Thanks for another great podcast. Your enthusiasm for your sewing is very uplifting!

  • @DianeVancouver
    @DianeVancouver 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I’ve learned a lot from you regarding knitting which I took up during covid time. But I’ve sewn all my life. You can alter those blue pants easily by putting them on inside out and pinning or marking where you want them smaller. Then just machine baste with your longest stitch and adjust to make them fit as you like. Once you have the fit you want stitch with normal length stitches, cut away the excess and serge the raw edges. Just a suggestion to get use out of them. I didn’t see a zipper but if there isn’t one, you could take out all the elastic and put an invisible zipper in the back or a side.

Aha! I knew you made that red blouse. It looks very beautiful on you. So much so that when you were talking about yarn colors, I thought "she looks so good in that red, and that red would deepen if dyed over a flecked gray..."
Your handspun sweater is really lovely. You did an excellent job on every part of it! I think the fit issues will be something that you will notice more than anyone else would.
    Thanks for another jam-packed
    episode.

I'm glad your sewing machine ended up behaving itself for the buttonholes, I fell out with mine because it would always mess them up and now I do all of them by hand. I highly recommend basting anything that's giving you trouble when sewing, it's far more secure and less stabby than pins.
I think the red of your blouse really suits you and a bulky sweater in that colour family would look great

Seems like you have most cool colors covered in your sweaters, but I didn't hear much about pink. I wear similar colors (cool: soft summer palette), and when I need a color boost I head to fuchsia. You don't have to dye it in shout out loud fuchsia, but maybe a softer/lighter shade & let the gray take care of the rest. Mint green is another good color, but I don't see that turning out as well w/the gray yarn. Good luck, regardless.

Dharma's Berry Crush and Blackberry are two of my favorites. Over grey they create rich, deep jewel tones. If you want to stick with colors already in your collection, experiment with some magenta over gray. You can try it out on a similarly colored skein if you don't want to risk any of your limited yarn supply.

Lots of great stuff today Roxanne. Love your cardi although it looks great to us viewers it’s the way that it feels when you wear it. I’m sure though that you will get lots of wear out of it. Your socks are lovely and I’m going to take note of the toe shaping in my next pair that I knit top down (currently testing a “skimmer” sock which is toe up). I have a few Love Notions patterns and I really like how versatile they are and as someone else mentioned Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles is a great source of information/ inspiration regarding Love Notions patterns and sewing in general. I would say that your sewing skills are far higher than intermediate going by the look of your garments. I’ve been doing more knitting than sewing recently but I need to get back to garment sewing. (I made a few small quilting projects earlier this year). I’m currently having a go at the Oslo hat and teaching myself provisional cast on - just about to knit the two lots of stitches together. Great vlogs Roxanne. Thank you 🙋🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You are very brave to tackle the pants. I find them so hard to get to fit right. I hope you share your next pattern choice for pants when you decide on it. I go through a very similar process. I want comfort but elastic is not always the nicest looking. You have to wear a top long enough to cover the waist band. I just got a serger and want to know if you found an on-line course or was it in person for your lesson? Or do you have an on-line resource for instructions? I get one session at my fabric store but that doesn’t sound as comprehensive as what you did. Thanks for all your help and inspiration.

Glad you're enjoying your sewing. I do like the red top. The color is great and so is the design. I've been sewing for nearly 45 years and it took nearly as long to get a proper pair of fitted pants. I took the Trouser draft class by Kenneth King a couple years ago, and finally ended up with a pant sloper (the base pant) that fit. It's what I use to make all pant patterns I want, and they fit every time. I took his class through a local sewing school in WA. I think there may be a virtual class for this. However, I would recommend a live class for pant fitting.

Your sewing progress is so awesome!!! I can relate to the pants fitting woes. My other issue is that I am 5'3" tall, so the rise is usually an issue. I would highly recommend the Sammi Pant by Style Arc. I had to make a couple of little tweeks in the contour waistband, and take them in a little through the hips, but wow, I love them! The pattern shows a more dressy, work appropriate style, but I made mine out of a medium/light weight denim with a little stretch, and they are perfect for my "retired and living in the mountains" lifestyle.
Thanks for all the fabulous content, as always! :) It's fun seeing what you are up to every week. :)

Gosh I love the blouse pattern and the color it looks really smart. The pants look good too. Its funny how you go away from a craft forget things and then go back to it and after a while it comes back. Your Sweater looked really nice, you have been very busy and productive. I have just knit a Crew neck Sweater Top down and I was pleased with it until I tried it on and I was have to rip one sleeve back because I was too enthusiastic about the length.

I like reds, greens, blues and purples over-dyed and on that grey it should end up a bit heathered which should be pretty. I have the short flat toes (duck feet lol) and my daughter has the longer, thinner feet. LOVE that red blouse pattern. I have no torso so I can't do a high waist. Pants are always so hard to get a good fit. Not surprising though considering it's hard with store bought as well.

@@RoxanneRichardson I have the mindset to do whatever it takes to make the sweater to the best of my abilities. If that means frogging any or all of it, and preparing the yarn to be reknit, I do that. You have invested so much time in spinning and dying the yarn, it seems like it would be well worth your time to reknit the top of the sweater and sleeves. You would then have a sweater you would be proud of and feel comfortable wearing. Aside from the fit, it's beautiful. I may be unique in this approach, but I enjoy knitting so it's just more knitting. Also, what I've knit doesn't become "precious" to me until I like it and feel it's the best I could do at my skill level.
