    Notes from the video:
    1. Do not neglect grades (has a significant impact on higher studies and technical jobs)
    2. Be diligent in completing the coursework. First, be thorough with the lecture material, then only move to the advanced stuff.
    3. Prepare notes, especially for the insights and analyses of difficult concepts(which are usually not mentioned in books)
    4. Try to attend most of the classes (atleast stay up to date with the progression of the coursework). Effectively utilize the time during the classes.
    5. Make use of online resources as and when required. But treat them as lectures and not shows to be passively watched. Find a single, comprehensive and robust resource and stick to it.
    6. Be careful at handling bad performances. Try to maintain some sort of data of your errors and pitfalls. Identify the root flaw in the understanding using Socratic Reasoning.
    7. Focus primarily on curriculum in the first year, especially, math and programming. Once a sense of understanding of the broader nature of the Department curriculum is obtained, then progress with projects.
(For a sidenote, I have added my personal insights in these notes as well)

Guys, I have seen many students avoiding academics after entering IITs/NITs . They thing only just by getting into these prestigious institutes would guarantee a better future. Its not the case. U have to work hard wherever u go.
I know many would be joining IITs and NITs with the idealogy of enjoying the 1st yr at college after coming through a tough path for last 2 yrs. But dont neglect academics at any cost.
Yes, u will have tym for fun and everything. Manage ur tym wisely and have a amazing college lyf. All the best ❤

On the point about gaining insights during problem solving.
I think this needs to be expanded upon. Prof. Nagendra Krishnapura from IITM makes a similar point during his introduction lecture for Analog IC Deaign. As students, many of us mindlessly drill through problems without spending time reflecting on what we've done. I realised the importance of this only when I started working. At work, the main way we learn daily is learning from the work we do each day. This is impossible of we work mindlessly as machines.

Sir I am in State Government Engineering Colleges, certainly its called a top one but I didnt find it at par with the times we are in.
Sir in my first year due to partial drop for JEE(I got 91.52 PR), I have got only 63.5%age. Now when I am attending lectures, I am getting stuck both due to some profs and my previous year gaps. I feel overwhelmed to not attend classes. I want to attend but when I force myslef to attend it, I get demotivated in the end. What can I possibly do?
I have already enrolled for NPTEL and also am being updated about every little opportunities from IITs and NITs for virtual workshops and competitions through X. Please guide. What should be my way foreward to exceed the limitations laid down by my college on me and break through to excel? What I should exacly be doing?
It is also a sincere request to make more videos oriented for students not studying in NITs and IITs. We need your advice more.
Also Sir what should I do to get an research internship at an IIT? Besides academic I think they see for some other distinctions, when I saw the list of selected candidates for internship at IIT Delhi they were mostly from top colleges...Sir as a State Government Engineering student what can I do?

Actually Prof. Chakraborty, I really agree with your advice regarding the difference between 'course' and 'subject'. To be honest, when my semesters used to go on in first year, I focused on learning only the course material. Later, during the winter and summer breaks, I learnt the subjects as a whole. It's because of the limited amount of time we get during the semester period 🥲.

    . Grades r imp
. Learn the whole course, not the subject only, bcoz grades pura course padhne se hi milenge, so if age jake koi particular subject padhna ho to higher studies M grades kaam aye
& study from prof only not by
    books
. Attend classes as regular as possible, be attentive at what is going in class even if u missed it
. Every 45 days u'll be having exams so study regular, also use the free time u get in class wisely
. Find a substitute like online resource if ur professor is not teaching well, but dont neglect the discussions held by them in class as that will give u an idea of structure of course
. If in some subjects, performance is low, just dint give up or u'll end up with a big loss, so just fix it & don't let it spoil other subjects
. Don't focus on any project works during 1st yr as u r not ready now, focus on ur subjects to study well

Also professor, how would you suggest the Socratic Reasoning/Questioning for the engineering disciplines. Should I utilize my time before the session starts learn to implement it ?
Secondly, how would you advise to take notes during lab sessions or practicals, when the discourse is primarily verbal.
Also, what is the correct way to ask doubts to professors? At school, I used to resolve my doubts, usually written down in a notebook, two- three days after the lecture, in order to properly understand where I lacked. Would it be practical to do the same at college ?
Is it possible to use the law of compounding to excel in the coursework at college ? The concept finds its mention innumerable times in productivity books and lectures, does it apply to the process of learning engineering subjects as well ?

That's the shortcoming of our education system. Emphasis on good scores and undermining learning the subject won't take a student anywhere in long term. May be one can get a good placement but when it comes to solve critical problems relating to the subject the handicapness will appear on its own.

Ref. books should only be used for solving questions. This should be made a rule 😂. The theory and concepts in the lec. are more than sufficient, practicing questions from the books will give a grasp. But reading the same content in a comprehensive manner...ugghhh it's a torcher😂😂😂

    Sir 1 help pleaseee....
Sir should I opt for NIT-K Surathkal Mining Engineering branch (might get it due to home state quota)...
Or should I prefer CSE in colleges in Bangalore (like BMSIT, MSRIT..)?
I feel that I'll be able to learn coding on my own if i join NIT-K.. and the peer group there would be better compared to here at Bangalore (quality of students)..
Please suggest me what i should do 🙏

Sir I've completed my 12th this year and I wanted to take up physics as i was interested in astrophysics so i thought i would do masters and then go for phD.. but then i heard that there is not much scope and also..a PhD takes so many years and a job is not so promisable. I don't know if I'm up for engineering if i wanted to do it.. So i was planning to take a repeat year and all..but now it's too late and there's only 5 months left now😢 I don't know if i should prepare from now or join a private engg college sir..This is completely unrelated to the video but I would greatly appreciate it if you would reply.. Thank you ❤

Sir I have a pretty random question, if I choose to do a double major next year in Mechanical Engineering at IIT KGP, will I get to study from you? Currently this year I will be admitted to Mining Engineering department in the institute.

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  หลายเดือนก่อน

I have been teaching Mechanics of Solids, and I wish to continue doing so. Now, if I remember correctly if one wishes to do a Double Major in Mechanical Engineering, one has to pick Mechanics of Solids as one of the mandatory prescribed subjects. So, there is definitely a possibility of me teaching you (of course you have to be in the section that I teach!).
